I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is. All knitting instructions use basically two stitches, the knit stitch and the purl stitch. Once you know these two knitting essentials you will be able to follow most knitting instructions which are just combinations or variations of these two knitting instruction stitches.

Knitting Instructions for the Knit Stitch
Once you have cast on, hold the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. Push the point of the right knitting needle in between the front of the first and second stitches, pointing the knitting needle to the right to feed the point through the first stitch keeping it under the left needle. The knitting yarn should be at the back of the work. Loop the knitting yarn around the right knitting needle from back to front, letting the knitting yarn rest between the needles. Catch the knitting yarn on the end on the right knitting needle and pull it through the first stitch to the front of the work. Slip the old stitch off the left needle. The new stitch is now on the right needle. Now you are getting the hang of the knitting instructions. It is a good idea to keep the knitting yarn draped over the right forefinger, this keeps it to the back of the work too. Repeat this process until all stitches are on the right knitting needle. Now count the stitches, if they are all there, turn the right knitting needle around and put it in the left hand. This is the first row from your knitting instructions. The knitting yarn will look like it is at the front and you will now take it to the back and start the second row of transferring stitches to the empty right needle.

Knitting Instructions for the Purl Stitch
The Purl stitch will also be in any knitting instructions. Start with the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. Your knitting yarn will be hanging in front. Push point of right knitting needle into the front of the first stitch from right to left. Wrap the knitting yarn around the tip of the right knitting needle, crossing over the two needles and hanging once again in front. Slide the right knitting needle down and back taking the new loop of knitting yarn from front to back, through the old stitch. Slip the old stitch off the left knitting needle. If you have followed the knitting instructions you now have a stitch in purl on the right knitting needle and the yarn is hanging, once again, in the front. Repeat this process until all stitches are on the right knitting needle. Now count the stitches to make sure you haven't dropped any and turn the work around putting the knitting needle with the stitches on in your left hand to start the next row.

I hope you could follow my knitting instructions. This is my version of knitting instructions for the two basic knitting stitches but I have found that it is very hard to use a few written knitting instructions. I have found a great book on the subject, much more in depth than I can be. It really helped me improve my knitting with advice on free knitting patterns, knitting instructions, all the knitting essentials. You can find it here.
I really suggest you take a look. Good luck with your knitting.

Dear Friend,

Thanks for visiting and finding my article. What follows is information that I have pulled together from many different sources. The secrets, tips, and techniques you read here are from my book "Crocheting Made Simple". I hope you find it both interesting and helpful.

Many imagine that knitted and crochet items survived in the youthful period of imperialism. A lot of communities in this era used this type of trade as their main resource of income. The crocheted and knitted goods are typically purchased by the middle class citizens.

The History of Crochet

Crochet was known to specify the status symbol of an individual from the early account. This accommodating refinement was practiced by the royalties who were capable to afford buying extravagant lace-work goods and set up the value of crochet commodities to devalue.

Numerous have alleged that knitting and crocheting was developed be means of the old practices of persons living in countries like China, Middle Eastern countries, and in South America. Many individuals find credible that crochet may have been practiced by early cultures to flex the muscles of the forefinger rather than a fashion hook. This belief was accepted by uncountable craft historians because of the absence of artifact crochet goods as evidence of its established practices.

Crochet vs. Lace

In the early 1800's, numberless European communities have used crochet goods in place of the immensely expensive lace made materials. Crocheting just requires fewer materials, and it is also extensively accepted by contrasting social classes. From these periods, crochet was done mainly on thread. The most common universally made products from crochet were filet crochet made in rows either open or close mesh to construct a certain pattern. While in the 1900's, the huge production of steel hooks has introduced numerous products which are made from thread.

In today's stretch, crocheting and knitting is the enjoyment of numberless individuals. It has recently evolved the attentiveness of many persons that made it so popular with the high quality of yarns and threads used. The delight of making a crochet article is working it with different yarn textures and colors.

8 Basic Tips for Crochet Beginners

As a novice, a person should understand the procedure of making a pattern row and a single stitch crocheting. Here are several fundamental steps that will help a person find out how to make a crochet product.

1. Foremost, the person may need the use of crochet mechanism like a size G crochet hook, small scissors, worsted-weight yarn with any colors, and a big-eyed yarn needle.

2. He may begin by holding the crochet hook in his right hand if he is right-handed. Then he may produce a slipped knot on the hook.

3. He may glide the hooked yarn to the slipknot of the hook. This procedure will produce a continuous stitch or a chained like stitches. He will then continue to bringing back the yarn on top of the hook making the thread go into the hook and grabbing the slip knot into the hook.

4. He can pass by on the first chain stitch permitting the knot to be properly hooked on the knot of the thread. This will allow the thread to be properly in place so that it will not loosen. A much tighter knot would be better to form a chain stitch.

5. He may insert the hook to the hole of on the next chain stitch, and then glide the yarn passing through the center of the second chain stitch going to the upper part of the hook. He may have now created two loops on the hook of the threads.

6. He may fetch the yarn back on the hook from back to front and slide the knot in the center of the loops that he had created on the hook.

7. From the second loop, form another one chain stitch to construct a counter clock wise loop. This allows the hook to remain in the chain stitches. He may set in motion again in creating the accompanying rows, creating the exact loops on the previous rows.

8. He may form a single crochet stitch in the first loop tightened going to the following loops of the previous rows. He should be precisely certain to produce the hook on the last stitch to retain the stitches on their places.

Completing the Crochet Item

To conclude the work, he may cut the surplus yarn on the skin. He should not forget to keep at minimum 6 inches of the thread on the last chain stitch. This will allow him to slip the hook up to the upper part of the loops and bringing the thread into the last loops of the hook. As a greenhorn, he may discover it tough to do especially on more detailed crochet products. He may begin doing these fundamental steps to help him get used to the techniques.

To be knitting. That, is one of the things which I cherish most. And it has such a long history, too. Most knitters begin with simpler pieces, such as a scarf, or one-color vest. Usually, they keep to a few well-liked patterns, or stitch types, and seldom venture very far from these.

To be knitting. That, is one of the things which I cherish most. And it has such a long history, too.

Known today as typically a woman's craft, knitting was originally done by men, shepherds, to be exact, way back when. Even in literature, there are knitters scattered around; the most famous has to be Madame DeFarge in Dicken's 'A Tale of Two Cities'.

Most knitters begin with simpler pieces, such as a scarf, or one-color vest. Usually, they keep to a few well-liked patterns, or stitch types, and seldom venture very far from these.

In this mid-winter time, what with Christmas behind us, and much snow and ice around us, my favorite project of all, comes to mind.

Whether you have a real fireplace, or just one playing on your TV, (ala Channel 11, all you New York people know what I mean), nothing goes with your hot chocolate or steaming tea, and that good book, like an afghan. Lap blanket, bed throw, any way you say it, afghans make rooms come alive with personality. Yours.

Of course, you can never have enough good afghans around. Eventually they all begin to get 'old', or become the dog's favorite blanket, or the cat's place to perch, so you can always use a new afghan! Before beginning an afghan project, though, there are considerations that you need to decide on.

Just what kind of an afghan are you going to knit? Will you use block patterns or knit in the round? How about yarn color and amount'do you need to learn new stitches or ways of advancing what you already know about your knitting?Other thoughts aside, these fundamental questions should be answered before going forward with a larger project such as knitting an afghan.

You know, afghan patterns are all over the place. Not just on the Web, either. Pick up a knitting magazine or book, and ideas will start to fly at you. How cute this one is, or oh, I just love this color, I think I'll knit this one.

A few good pointers when considering knitting an afghan are:

A. Decide on a pattern. Simple, right? Wrong! Be sure to check out the "skill level" listed with each pattern; if it says advanced, and you are still a newbie, don't attempt it! They really do mean what they say, and you will soon find yourself lost in knitting terms and instructions you never knew existed.

B. Will you use regular needles or circular ones? I find either/or is fine by me. Some of you have never used circular; they take some getting used to, but hold a large number of stitches. So, if you are planning a pattern that calls for anything over, say, 75 stitches, use a circular needle.

C. Which yarn will you use? That's a biggie! Usually with afghans, I find that the emphasis is on the pattern stitch(es), and by utilizing color, you can turn out a masterpiece with some of the more traditional yarns. I don't recommend the fun furs, or eyelash yarns for afghans, nor should you use super-bulky either. Unless you don't mind stiff fingers all the next day!D. What about joining yarns? How does that go again? Incorporating lots of different colors, or just three or four, means knowing the correct way of joining yarns, so as not to make your work look amateurish.

So, you see, deciding on knitting an afghan, requires some planning ahead. Next article, we will pick out needles and yarn, and choose some pretty patterns to get us going! In the meantime, finish up those post-holiday projects now. Afghans take some time, but, when they're done, they are beautiful!

When babies are born, the body is very sensitive from the heat and the cold. To make sure that the infant is protected at all times, getting clothes that have double stitching can really help.

Since most of the clothes are cotton or made of thicker fabric, clothes with crochet patterns will do the trick and make the baby look fashionable in the outdoors.

Some good designs for the baby could be represented in the form of farm animals. An example could be a little lamb, a rabbit and a chick. Others could be about nature in the form of a flower that symbolize the birth and growth of the infant.

The baby can have clothes from top to bottom using crochet patterns. The hat can be entirely covered in using a single color then a few things can be added on the sides. The most common even for adults is having lines, shapes or other figures along the sides. A design on the top like a star or circles will also make it stand out.

The person should also give the baby gloves but should choose strong fabric that will not tear away easily and is inhaled by the infant.

The top can be like a cape or a sweater to give added warmth for the baby. Giving it some double stitching and perhaps using multi-colored fabric is a good idea making it unique. The bottom for the baby can also be made using light and dark colors. This should also be thick to give protection from the temperature outside.

Crochet patterns are not only limited on the clothes for the baby. This can also be used to accessorize the things that are used. A good example is the milk bottle. Some plain color stitching can make it easier to hold and not slip when it is used to feed the infant.

Since the baby is covered from head to toe, crochet patterns can also be made for the socks. The person should first measure the feet of the infant then after drawing it on paper, can start working on it. There should be some allowance perhaps a size bigger so that the infant may still use this for more than a year.

To complete the collection from clothes to all the other baby essentials, the person can also make a wash cloth using crochet patterns. This is easy to make since special add-ons are not necessary to make it work. The holes in between can be big or small and depends entirely on the taste of the parent.

As the baby grows older, other things can be made. A very good example is the swimsuit. A lot of these ideas are used for older women and if these people can do it, so can the baby. Infants can have this in bright colors with creatures like a fish on it.

Sweaters and a hat can now have better designs which will be very similar to the versions of grown-ups.

The parent has the option to buy these ready made crochet patterns in the mall or do it in the comforts of home. There are many instructional books and designs that can be downloaded free from the internet to make this happen.

This task will be easy if the person has done some cross-stitching in the past. The instructions given are very similar and with a little practice, this can be done right away.

The materials for this project can be purchased at the specialty store that sells threads of different widths and different colors. Some are multicolored which will make it easy for the person to finish it faster. This place also has needles of various lengths to be used for the job.

Crochet patterns for babies are cute. All it takes is for the person to be imaginative and look at some material to have an idea on how to make it. The clothes and other accessories are just smaller versions that people normally do which will cut the production time.

By taking the time to sit down and do it, the parent will have a wardrobe for baby that is unique and provides warmth as well.

As Winter is slowly giving way to Spring, it is easy to look around at all the new beginnings. Slowly, little plants are beginning to poke their heads out of the ground, and trees are blossoming into pretty shades of new pink, white, and lavender.

Spring is a wonderful time of the year to think about knitting. What it means to be knitting. Why I knit, and why I love it so much. What about knitting, is so fulfilling to me.

I think anyone who knits and loves to knit, will tell you they love to knit for a variety of reasons. At their core, those reasons all hold the same essence. Passion. Another word for it would be fulfillment. There is something beyond money, beyond fame, beyond ego, that has us knitting.

That something I like to call "the tao of knitting."

Like the Bible, the Tao Te Ching is a spiritual guide; one that has been around for centuries. It inspires, teaches, assists with the rigors of daily life, and provides examples of how best to find peace within ourselves, for each other, and for the world in which we live.

Whether we be learning from the Tao Te Ching or learning how to knit, purl, and yarn-over, the lessons are very much the same. A few examples would be:

- building self-esteem and self-acceptance. Knitting is a great way to formulate self-esteem. In today's harried, rushed world in which we all live, finding substance in the things we do is often a difficult endeavor. Too often we are left wondering if our talents are needed, and even if we have talents at all! By learning to knit, there is no doubt that when finished with our projects, that we always have something to show for our efforts; the trappings of our "yarn life" are always useful.

- bringing greater joy and creativity to daily life. Why, when you knit, it is practically a given, that those simple rhythms, those quiet needle clicks, and back-and-forth cadences of creating row upon row of our patterns, help to create endorphins in our brains; those key receptors which produce a calming effect in our lives. This is documented behavior. But, we knitters could have told you that.

- understand life as a series of changes and challenges. For life is transformation. It is always evolving into something else, something more, not less; yet, we have to see that for ourselves. Not a day goes by where we can say, joy is mixed with sadness, serenity is suffused with conflict, ease blends with difficulty. When we knit, oftentimes there are challenges to patterns, stitch work which may be initially foreign to anything which we've tried before, even words and phrases new to us, which make the going slow, indeed. Perserverance prevails, and when we stick to our resolve, we come away with knitted creations that are sublime; just this side of heaven, and truly our masterpieces.

So many of life's little lessons are learned along the way, when we knit. Patience, self-awareness, growing in harmony with ourselves and other knitters we meet along the way, welcoming challenges as good things, allowing even the mistakes to have a place in our lives.

Follow your heart to all things knitted. It is the road which leads you to life.

Without us even realizing it, November is quickly passing us by! If you are truly stumped as to what to give everyone this Christmas, fear not! I am here with some knitting suggestions.

In my three previous articles, I have given you some ideas for scarves, ribbon bracelets, and placemats. Just these simple patterns, can be transformed into dozens of one-of-a-kind knitting creations! In fact, you could outfit the entire family and close friends, with some of the nicest gifts they will ever receive!

And to add to our collection, this article will be about knitting baby washcloths. Usually, whenever we think about baby gifts, it's off to the mall we go, to find the latest in infant accessories. But, did you know, you can knit your own baby creations? They will be as soft and cuddly as anything you can find in a store, and, best of all, will be made with love!

Knitting baby items are just so easy to do, and so unexpected! Traditionally, when putting together gifts for baby, the first things you think about are layettes, blankets, and booties. So, now it's time to expand on this theme.

Whenever I knit anything for babies, I love the yarn to be soft and pliable. For washcloths, use a cotton yarn. They are totally washable, and will hold up nicely.

In a few stores, I have also seen terrycloth yarn, which is another great idea for baby items. But, for the baby washcloths that I knit up, the cotton yarn is the best yarn to use. Sugar ?n Cream, Peaches ?n Cream or Cotton Tots are my recommendations for the best cotton yarn to knit with.

Use a size 6 straight needle, and, really, no gauge is necessary. Here is the pattern:

Baby Washcloth Cast on 37 stitches. Knit four rows.

Rows 1 and 5 (RS): K5, *p3, k5; repeat from * to end.
Rows 2 and 4 : P5, *k3, p5; repeat from * to end.
Row 3: K5, *p1, yo, p2tog, k5; repeat from * to end.
Row 6: Purl.
Rows 7 and 11: K1, *p3, k5; repeat from * , end last repeat k1.
Rows 8 and 10: P1, *k3, p5; repeat from * end last repeat p1.
Row 9: K1, *p1, yo, p2tog, k5; repeat from * , end last repeat k1.
Row 12:Purl.

Repeat these 12 rows 4 or 5 times more, until desired length. Knit four rows. Bind off all stitches.

There you have it, simple, yet very unique, and sure to please! And, with all the colors and color combinations, you will have a blast knitting washcloths for little nieces and nephews, your friends, and babies-in-waiting! Gifts such as these, are always appreciated, and combine them with baby bottles, rattles, toys, or receiving blankets, and you'll have a winner every time!

Remember, we have one more "easy-as-pie knitting gift" to go, and you will love it! 'til next week, get knitting!

Dear Friend,

Thanks for visiting and finding my article. What follows is information that I have pulled together from many different sources. The secrets, tips, and techniques you read here are from my book "Crocheting Made Simple". I hope you find it both interesting and helpful.

It may sound silly, but crochet patterns have been finished for many years. Recently it is becoming a trend again in the fashion world. By learning about it, the individual will be proficient to come up with some grand designs to present to people.

Start With the Basics

In the first place when individuals begin something new, it is best to start with the fundamentals. This happens in nearly all things and crochet patterns is no different.

In addition, if the individual has done cross stitching in the past, it will be simple to comprehend how certain designs are done. If the person did not possess any familiarity in the past, then it is best to enroll in a class then after some interval, can make a move on to crochet patterns.

Crochet and the Fashion World

Most people would agree that the fashion world is an extremely good area to uncover more about crochet patterns. Inasmuch as this is dictated by several of the world's famous brands, wisdom from these professionals will keep the individual up to date on the current trends.

In fact, fashion shows generally feature the upcoming apparel a few months before it is launched. By watching, then studying the fabric once it hits the stores, the individual will be able to construct a comparable design that is also abreast with what is new and hot.

By the way should the individual not be able to see the fashion exhibit, and then the next location to learn of it is in reference materials such as books and videos that can be bought at the nearby specialty store. This should have everything including the materials to be used.

There are also several shows on TV and magazines that can be bought which feature some of the fundamental to the more innovative designs. The person has to merely understand the instructions noted and work on it.

One Color Basic

In the beginning the fundamentals should be done with only using one color. The individual should practice this in making a basic item such as a wash cloth. Should this be successful, then moving on to greater effects can start?

Next, a slipknot is one of the fundamentals in beginning crochet patterns. The individual does not need to use a needle and totally work it with the hands. While one end is in around the fingers, the ball of yarn can be thrown in the air.

Soon after beginning a few loops, this will end with the person forming a knot using both hands.

Switching Colors

One of the numerous challenges in crochet patterns is changing from one color to the next. This can be done by stopping with one color then slowly sliding a different color thread into the needle.

Without a doubt another fundamental method that the individual should learn of is mixing. This is done using 2 needles each with a different color of thread. By making these face one another and letting one of the needles work above the other, the print will become multi-colored.

Furthermore the purl stitch is another method used to construct crochet patterns. This is really comparable to mixing. The yarn is already around one needle. The individual will then use the other to work its way inside until both can be used to work together to produce a pattern.

On the other hand cross stitching is very challenging and will require a lot of effort. After exercising several of the essentials, the individual can advance on to form figures, shapes, lines and others to make it stand out.

4 Things to Remember

1. The individual has to bear in mind that the fashion trade goes by seasons. This means that the sole should work fast so that once it is finished; it can still be used in the suitable period.

2. Beginners should be able to sketch it on paper to analyze how a determined design should be finished. By using this as a guide, the person will be able to monitor the progression of the work.

3. Crochet patterns can be done on nearly anything. By working on various little household items then moving on to clothing, and accessories, the person's crochet pattern skills will be dramatically improved.

4. There are a lot of designs and not everything is in the book. Some of it can be from the person's creativity and after sketching it and action with needles that concept can be brought to existence.

In closing there are numerous ways to find out about the basics of crochet patterns. The person should just apply some time to read about it and observe how this is accomplished.

Finding a free knitting pattern online is not all that hard. There are several places that offer them, and they come in a variety of designs. But finding a free knitting pattern that also includes easy to understand instructions is something else altogether.

In some cases, when you find something that you like, you end up being disappointed because the technique needed to make the article is beyond your skill level or expertise. Or in some cases you may find that you need to use the English method and all you know is the Continental method. And often a free knitting pattern does not contain any illustrations to help you visualize what is needed. In any of the above scenarios, you end up putting the project aside or giving it away to someone else.

But it does not have to be that way. There are some places that offer a free knitting pattern that comes with detailed instructions to help you get the project finished and finished in such a way that you can be proud of the results. In fact, if done well, you may even feel confident enough to give the project to someone as a gift.

Ideally, what you would like to find is a place that starts with the basics and then moves on to the more advanced techniques. You would also want to find a place that shares illustrations with you so you can actually see what it is you are suppose to be doing. Of course, you also want to learn the various stitching methods so you aren't caught unprepared should one of them come up. Sounds like a lot to learn, and if it isn't presented in a logical and easy to understand manner, it can be a lot more to learn.

You can, of course, join a local circle, but that involves traveling to the group and hoping that someone in the group will take you under their wing and show you the various techniques and explain to you the things you do not understand. Another problem is that often they work on particular projects, and you are not able to do exactly what you would like to do until your turn comes up.

Another choice you have is to cut through all of that and just head for a website that contains all of the information you need in one place. Information that is easy to read, easy to learn, easy to execute. These places do exist, but they can be hard to find. Many of them only want to sell you a load of old materials that they have laying around and have no real interest in teaching you what you need to know.

There is one place, however, called Easy-Knit that does take the time to share with you the many aspects of this craft. Anna Stewart has over 40 years of experience with this craft and she shares her wealth of information with those who seek it. Visit http://www.easy-knit.com to learn more.

Cross stitch is a form of counted thread embroidery; it is dated back to the 6th or 7th century. It was used to decorate household items using floral and geometric patterns, usually worked in black and red cotton floss on linen fabric. Cross-stitch was found in a Coptic tomb in Upper Egypt, where it was preserved by the dry desert climate.

Catherine of Aragon, the Spanish first wife of Henry VIII has brought blackwork in England. Blackwork is thought to have influenced the development of cross-stitch. Catherine of Aragon used to stitch herself the King's shirts.

The most common cross stitching work were samples and it was usually in a form of a prayer or a saying. In 1797 children from the orphans school near Calcutta in Bengal were given the task of stitching the longest chapter in the Bible, the 19th psalm.

Books with cross-stitch patterns were popular in Europe and America during the 17th century and they would feature samples. Cross stitch patterns were printed as black squares or dots, leaving the choice of colours to the embroiderer. The earliest surviving dated sampler was stitched by an English girl, Jane Bostocke, in 1598. Jane's sampler contains floral and animal motifs and an alphabet. It is believed that from Jane's motifs she must have had access to an early pattern book.

Most cross stitchers still like to stitch and embellish items like dishcloths and household linens, however it is now increasingly popular to stitch various designs and pictures and hang them on the wall for decoration.

Want to learn how to knit or crochet - but find every time you cast on stitches you tend to be all fingers and thumbs. Well fret not because help for those wanting to learn how to knit or crochet is available.

Over 24 million people love crafting with yarn and believe it or not - some of that total is men, the male species love to knit or crochet just as much as women. Hobbies that involve knitting, sewing or the following of a pattern (dressmaking) can be very rewarding (financially). Being handy with a needle and cotton or knitting needles is a cost affective chore for the housewife on a budget as in i.e. knitting a cardigan, jumpers or woolly socks for the kids.

To learn how to knit or crochet is quite simple, some reasons why people love to knit a hat, gloves or crochet a baby shawl is because they find it satisfying and enjoy the relaxing effect it gives helping to relieve stress.

Once you learn how to knit or crochet you may find yourself inundated with orders for fair aisle sweaters or baby bonnets. Knitted garments make great gifts. This is a social activity where friendship still prevails while you learn. It is also a portable hobby - so where ever you go your knitting goes too. Once you have mastered the art people will take notice of your originality in design - which can lead to knitwear orders. Why so many people knit, dress-make and crochet is because of the pleasure gained working with yarn textures. Get to know your wool when you learn how to knit or crochet. There are five basic types of yarn: Baby fingering, sport baby worsted weight, chunky and bulky

Expect to find type differences; yarns have different thickness or "weights," with fingering being the finest. Terms are used to differentiate knitting yarns, for example the term "ply," refers to the number of strands that were twisted together to form the yarn. Yarn content or "fibre content" states what the yarn is made of: synthetic or natural fibres. Knowledge on craft materials will give better insight as to what is best suited for different projects. Synthetic yarns, like acrylics wash easily. Materials as such are worn by people whose skin is rather sensitive to wool.
Follow all instructions accordingly on yarn labels. Information may include - the sort of wool it is, the amount and/or yardage in the ball or skein, gauge and fibre content.

Check for freebies (patterns) on the label. Have practice knitting sessions before embarking on any project that may involve other than plain or pearl stitches. Go to a jumble sale and pick up unused balls of wool or un-ravel an old knitted jumper for your first attempt - this will save on the pennies. Seamstresses who professionally knit or crochet woolly blankets and patchwork quilts for the cold winter months - do so because of practice.

A crochet hook has a notch at one end for catching loops of yarn which draws them through stitches. Crochet hooks can be purchased in aluminium, plastic and wood (just like knitting needles). They are often recognized by a letter system for size marking. Sizes range between B (2.25 mm) to S (19 mm), the largest, and come in 6" lengths.

Use steel crochet hooks for crochet dainties like lace and doilies. These differ i.e. sizing range, using numbers from 00 (3.5 mm), the largest, to 14 (.75 mm), the smallest. When you learn how to knit or crochet you will need to know about needle sizes, different textures and yarns. Depending on the garment you tend on knitting will decipher what knitting pins to use. Pins are sold in pairs and come in various sizes, from 0 (2 mm), the smallest, to size 15 (10 mm) and larger and also come in 10" or 14" lengths. Usually an indication of the knitting pin size is located on the end of the straight needle.

If the woollies you choose to knit are clothing items like Afghans, then these can be worked in a tube without a seam. Circular (round) knitting needles can be used. These are long flexible needles with points at both ends. For less complicated tasks that do not have seams (booties and mittens) "double-pointed knitting needles" are used. Sold in sets of four and as the name indicates, there is a point on each end. Once you learn how to knit - then the knitting pattern that once looked complicated to you begins to make sense - therefore resulting in casting on and casting off with your eyes closed.

Crocheting has been a favorite craft for generations, and with good reason. Mastering the art of crochet enables you to create wonderful and useable pieces of art, at a very reasonable cost.

Today's crochet patterns are more interesting and inspiring than ever, and incorporate vibrant colours and exciting new fibers. Using new patterns, you can crate fun, fashionable, functional and economical pieces to wear.

Over the years, people have taken up and enjoyed the art of crochet for many reasons:

1. Most people who enjoy crocheting find the hobby to be very calming and relaxing

2. Most crochet enthusiasts find it interesting and rewarding to work with a variety of colours and textures.

3. Creating items of clothing to proudly display, like hats, scarves and sweaters, is incredibly rewarding.

4. Getting together for a crochet party with friends and family can be a great social activity.

5. Crocheting is portable; you can take your project along, wherever you need to be.

6. People who crochet make the most of their idle time, for example, crocheting while watching television.

7. Completing a crochet project provides a sense of pride and achievement.

8. Crocheting is an inexpensive hobby, and a great way to create beautiful and practical homemade gifts.

9. Self expression is an important element of crochet, giving the opportunity to design new patterns.

To begin any crochet project, you need to purchase some yarn and a needle. Crochet hooks comes in different sizes and materials. Hook sizes G, H and I are recommended for beginners, as smaller hooks sizes are much more difficult to manage. Steel hooks for crochet are normally used with fine threads to create intricate patterns. These hooks are usually are available in sizes 00 up to 16, whereby higher numbers denote a smaller hook size. On the other hand, hooks for yarns are identified with letters starting at B and ranging up to Q, with B being the smallest and Q the largest.

You can start crocheting with any type of knitting yarn. Just be sure that the yarn and the size of the hook are well matched.
Purchase one dark colored and one lighter colored yarn, to be able to track your progress and see how you are doing with the stitches. Buy an ordinary yarn to get started. Specialty yarns like wool and chenille are more difficult to work with. When buying yarn, test its strength by rubbing several strands between your thumb and index finger. If the yarn unravels a lot, don't purchase it. Keep trying different yarns to feel the difference and find the best quality. It's a good idea to purchase a little more yarn than what your pattern calls for. If you happen to run out of yarn and need to return to the store, you may find that the colour batch is sold out, or the yarn is out of stock entirely.

A hat is a great beginner's crochet project. Here are simple instructions to crochet a hat:

Purchase your materials:
* Size "G" crochet hook
* Worsted weight yarn of any one color, or a combination of colors
* One yarn needle, with a big eye
* Small scissors

Follow the steps:

1. Hold the crochet hook in your right hand, with the hook pointed in, and then create a slipknot on the hook.

2. Carry the yarn over with the hook, starting from the back going to the front. Take the yarn with the hook.

3. Draw the hooked yarn through with a slipknot, and onto the hook. This makes one chain stitch.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 in sequence, 28 times. You'll need a total of 29 chain stitches with the loop staying on the hook.

5. Skip the first chain stitch.

6. Insert the hook to the center of the next chain stitch. Draw the yarn through the chain stitch, and then work up to the hook; this results in two 'loops on hook'.

7. Bring the yarn over the hook, starting from the back to the front, and pull it through both loops on hook. There should be one loop that stays on the hook. This is called a single crochet stitch.

8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for another 27 chains. Make sure that you work in the very last chain. You have now completed one line of single crochet.

9. Measure your piece. It should be about 7 inches wide. If your piece is overly wide, start over and try again using one less beginning chain. If it's too narrow, try again and add extra beginning chains.

10. Create a single chain stitch at the tip of the line or row, and turn your piece counter-clockwise. Be sure that you leave the yarn with the hook in the chain. Begin making another row, working through the stitches as you did in the previous row.

11. Make a single crochet stitch in the first stitch, and also in each remaining stitch of the preceding row. Make certain to work into the last stitch. "Chain 1, turn."

12. Repeat step 10 until you have created a block that measures 9" long.

13. Cut the yarn from the ball, leaving 6 inches at the end. Pull the hook directly upwards, inserting the yarn into the loop that remains on the hook, and then thread the yarn needle and interlace stitches back and forth to secure it.

The following is a sample of a basic hat pattern:

Chain 4: Join with a slipstitch in the first chain to form a ring.

R1: Chain 2 (this counts as "half double crochet")- 11 "half double crochet" in ring; join with a slipstitch in top of chain 2, twelve stitches.

R2: Chain 2- Half double crochet in the same chain as joining; two half double crochet in each half double crochet around; join in the top of chain 2, 24 stitches.

R3: Chain 2- Half double crochet in same chain as joining; half double crochet in the next half double crochet; two half double crochet in the next half double crochet; half double crochet in next half double crochet; repeat from * around; join, thirty-six stitches.

R4: Chain 2- Half double crochet in the same chain as joining; half double crochet in the next 2; half double crochet; 2 half double crochet in the next half double crochet; half double crochet in the next 2; half double crochet; repeat from * around; join, forty-eight stitches.

R5: Chain 2-Half double crochet in each half double crochet around; join.

R6: Chain 2-Half double crochet in same chain as joining; half double crochet in next 3 half double crochet; 2 half double crochet in the next half double crochet; half double crochet in the next 3; half double crochet; repeat from * around; join, sixty stitches.

R7: Chain 2-Half double crochet in back loops only of each half double crochet around; join.

Rs 8-14: Repeat round 5.

"Brim-Round" 15: Chain 2-Half double crochet in the same chain as joining; half double crochet in next 2; half double crochet;
* 2 half double crochet in the next half double crochet; half double crochet in the next 2 half double crochet; repeat from * around; join, eighty half double crochet.
Rounds 16-20: Repeat Round 5. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Abbreviations:
* = Repeat whatever follows* (asterisk)
R = row

Once you get to know the basic techniques, you'll find it very easy to follow a pattern and complete an easy project, such as a hat. After finishing your first project, you can find new patterns in specialty shops, magazines or on the Internet. Challenge yourself and improve your talents by taking on more complicated projects. Before you know it, you will be a seasoned crocheter and thoroughly enjoying your new hobby.

Background.......

Yarn is a string composed of interlocked fibers used in the production of textiles, crocheting, sewing and knitting.

There are many different fibers that can form a knitting yarn. Cotton is the most popular natural fibre and wool is the most common animal fibre. However, other types of animal fibers are used too, like angora, cashmere and the latest trend in knitting yarns - the alpaca knitting yarn. The alpaca fibers that form a knitting yarn are notable for their strength , which is significantly higher than that in wool fibers, for their softness and, moreover, the alpaca fiber comes in an impressive range of natural colors from white, beige, light brown, dark brown, to black.

Blending for quality ........

However, it had been demonstrated that by blending alpaca fiber with wool , we obtain a yarn of a higher quality. When it comes to the knitting yarn composed solely of sheep's wool , we talk of two categories of wool used in knitting yarn: worsted and woolen.

The yarn that results from worsted wool is smooth and firm, whereas the one that results from woolens is fuzzier and not so strong

Other Types .......

.As for the natural fibers, silk and linen are also used for knitting yarn. Knitting yarn can be also made of synthetic materials, chiefly acrylic. There are all acrylic yarns or acrylic blended with wool. Nylon is another synthetic fibre used in a small quantity in the yarn designed for use in socks as an example.

There are many different types of knitting yarns you can find obviously according to quality and price. You want. For example, you can find usual yarns like cotton and wool and then luxury yarns like super merino, pure silk, possum worsted , Hana silk , baby alpaca , zephyr(50% Chinese Tussah Silk and 50% fine Merino wool)

What you need to know before choosing........

You need to know the properties of your knitting yarn because they affect the look and the feel of the garment. Your first point of call & where you can find out a lots of information is by looking at the label, such as the fiber content, weight, type of the knitting yarn, and its suitability for the project you have in mind and naturally how many meters of knitting yarn you have and washing instructions.

In most instances however the pattern from which you'll be knitting will identify and/or suggest the best material with which to knit the item. It is also advisable to buy a little more knitting yarn than the pattern requires.

About Yarn Weight .............

Yarn weight is the thickness of the knitting yarn. You will see there is a vast range going from very fine weight or baby weight and chunky yarns as well.

What does it mean? Yarn weights are separated into different categories, six categories actually. There is :

1-first a baby, fingering, sock category, which is super fine

2- the second category is is called baby, sport category and is fine yarn weight;

3- the DK, light , worsted category which is light,

4-the afghan, aran, worsted category ,

5- the chunky, craft and rug category and the fifth,

6- super bulky yarn weight which can be bulky and roving.

In the UK yarn is labeled in ply. A ply is a single strand of yarn. Lace weight, or 2-ply/3-ply is a very fine yarn used for lacy garments . scarves and baby clothes.

Fingering knitting yarn or 4-ply is used for baby clothes but also for adult clothes.

From Around the World

Sport weight or DK 8-ply in Australia it is a very popular type of yarn because not only it comes in different colors , but it also comes in a range of different effects, such as heather, blushed, tweed and more; Aran, worsted or triple, 12-ply in Australia is generally used for heavily texture garments; chunky or bulky, 14-ply in Australia is a heavy yarn used to make large sweaters and jackets. This last category is called in America super-bulky.
