EGAD celebrates local musicians and artists at June 1 First Friday Art Walk

Nine local performers and bands will share their musical talents for six hours June 1 as an extended musical celebration in conjunction with the Eau Gallie Arts District Main Street First Friday Art Walk. All activities are free and open to the public.

First Friday attendees may pick up a “Passport” from the EGAD table at Eau Gallie Square. By having merchants and galleries validate their visits, arts enthusiasts can submit the passports for a chance to win $50 in EGAD Bucks, redeemable throughout the district.

The musicians will perform original work from 5-11 pm. They are donating their time as part of a pre-launch benefit for the new Vertigo Music Magazine, being produced by Victoria Jennings Mitchell. The magazine will be in print form and online at vertigomusicmag.com.

EGAD Main Street will host an open house from 4:30-7:30 at its new office in the Gould Business Center, 587 W. Eau Gallie Blvd, Suite 103. The drop-in event also is scheduled as a welcome for new EGAD Executive Director, Chevon Baccus. Various local artists are displaying work at the new office, and a special “Music Room” mural by Mike McCloskey is being unveiled.

Musical performers confirmed for Eau Gallie Square include: Jessica Ottway at 5 p.m., Matt Rosman at 5:30 p.m., Andy Harrington at 6 p.m., No Diving at 6:30 p.m., Circuit Bender at 7:15 p.m. Sounds of Nebula at 8 p.m. Elephant Gun at 8:45 p.m., Mad Martigan at 9:30 p.m. and a special surprise guest band at 10:15 p.m.

Artists scheduled to exhibit in the square include: Sandi Palofer, Damien Share, Pat Frazier, JoeVedovati, Spiral Flutes and Brian Benson with Art 4 Kids.

A variety of other activities are planned for First Friday, and many retail shops and galleries will stay open late.

The Foosaner Museum of Art , 1463 Highland Ave., will hold a reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for the opening of its new exhibit of Florida Artwork from the permanent collection. The Foosaner also will be hosting a free jazz concert by Matt Heister.

The Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, 1470 Highland Ave., will be open from 5:30-8:30 p.m. with a new exhibit “Moving from Realism to Abstract” by artist Barbara Burkhardt.

Art and Antique Studio, 1419 Highland Ave., will be open from 5:30-8:30 p.m. with its new exhibit, “It’s a Man’s World,” featuring the work of various artists.

Artist Elizabeth Kaufmann’s “Stories in Acrylic” will be on display at Highland Art & Studio, 1414 Highland Ave., which also will offer musical entertainment by “The Hemingways.”

The works of 21 artists portraying “Travel” of all definitions remains on exhibit at the EGAD Art Lab, 1405 Highland Ave.

Eau Gallie Arts District Main Street is a nonprofit 501(c )3 organization dedicated to promoting arts and economic development in the old Eau Gallie section of Melbourne. Children's Art Competition hosted by The Downtown Art Gallery in Titusville

To kick off the 2nd Annual Titusville Sea Turtle Festival, the Downtown Art Gallery is hosting a Children's Art Competition on June 7, 8 & 9 with an Awards Reception on Thursday evening at 6:30pm. Winners will be announced and ribbons awarded at the ceremony by judge, Christine Velez Stone.

Everyone is invited to come down and see the creative and colorful sea life artwork by these talented young artists. Light refreshments will be served. Live music downtown in the courtyard by the Titusville High School Band starts at 5pm to enjoy for all ages. All the events are free and open to the public.

Live models are essential for the sculptor. All level students will enjoy step-by-step instruction in building an armature and creating a full figure ceramic sculpture. Preston Studios Celebrates 35 Years

Sunday May 20th from 2pm to 4pm, John Emery will be speaking in the lecture hall and be giving tours of the Preston Studios' exhibit at the Cocoa Beach Library. Of special notes has been the debut of a first ever ebook in the field of stained glass, Lamps for the 21st Century by Wardell Publications. The book is about the stained glass lamps of Preston Studios.

This book not only has many photographs of the original "Prestons" created by the studio, but has 14 embedded videos showing the process. This can all be seen on either an iPad or an android tablet. John will be demonstrating this new book.

The exhibition at the Cocoa Beach Library will continue through May 30th.

Carolyn Seiler Studio in Cocoa Village offers 10 weeks of Creative Camps this summer for ages 5 - 12. In its 13th year, this popular program is all about creating, learning and having fun!

Each one week session exposes children to a variety of art techniques including painting, drawing, clay, and mixed media . Campers keep a journal and a portfolio, work from life and their imagination, in small groups that offer lots of individual attention, While creating they learn about the lives of different artists or facts about the natural world in a system of integrated learning that is unique in Brevard County.

Kids bring lunch or a snack Monday thru Thursday, Friday they have a pizza party across the street at Ryan's Pizza then have their "awards presentation" where each child is recognized for his talents. Parents are invited to join them for this.

Afternoons from 1-4pm

Weekly workshops.

Acrylic painting and torn paper collage. Basic drawing skills and painting technique with acrylic paints. The class will then paint papers and tear shapes to construct a "painting" on board. This not only develops hand eye coordination but teaches color values as you construct your image.

Plus it’s fun!

Each week will focus on a different theme. Still life, self portraits and animals to name a few. At the end of a week's workshop we will have a show for parents to view their children accomplishments.

Experimental Art Camp at EGAD! ART LAB Innovative hands-on summer camp for kids ages 6-12

Melbourne, Florida - Before you know it, school will be out for summer and your kids will be looking for something cool and fun to do. Parents in the know will be looking for ways to keep their kids off the couch and unplugged while also helping them grow, learn and have fun. The ideal compromise: an Art Adventure Camp!

Local artists, Heather Everett and Derek Gores, have created a truly fun and dynamic summer art camp that will spark creativity, exploration and individual expression. Their Summer Art Adventures will be held at the EGAD! Art Lab in historic downtown Eau Gallie. The camps will run Monday through Fridays from 10am-2pm.

Each weekly session will feature a different and unique opportunity for the campers to interact with the local community in an artistic way: from painting in local parks; to studying local architecture for inspiration; to working with a local professional photographer; or using local found objects to create robots! The campers will also discover the work of artists, classic to contemporary, and the wide range of materials that they use. During each Art Adventure, campers will be creating unique works of art through drawing, abstract design, collage, cartooning, sculpture, and mixed media to create one-of-a-king art peices.

Art is good for kids. Studies show that art teaches problem solving, a love of learning and develops the whole brain. Summer camps are great for kids. According to PBSkids.org and the American Camp Association (ACA) over 10 million kids attended summer camp last year! The convergence of art, fun, and local community come together to create these amazing and unique Art Adventures! “To be playful and serious at the same time defines the ideal mental condition”, according to John Dewey, author of How We Think.

Derek Gores

A Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) graduate, Derek is best known for his collage portraits on canvas. In 2010, Derek was named 'One of 40 important artists of the New Contemporary Art Movement' , and was honored to be one of 15 artists invited to exhibit at Manifest Hope:DC prior to the Presidential Inauguration in 2009. Derek is represented by galleries in Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Chicago, Sacramento, Tampa, Key West, and Cologne, Germany. EGAD Art Lab

Founded in 2011, the gallery and live art studio is the source for contemporary art in Brevard County. Featuring monthly art exhibits and workshops for kids and adults, the EGAD Art Lab specializes in interactive, often surprising combinations of art and other aspects of the community. Exhibits have included the POLLEN8 show pairing artists and floral designers, the HEAD GAMES exhibit, which featured a live performance of selections by Places, Please! The Art Gallery of Viera Presents "Elements II"

The Elements -- earth, air, fire and water -- will be the theme of the Art Gallery of Viera's latest show, "Elements II". Last year's "Elements" show was so popular they brought it back and the artwork promises to be even more spectacular this year. They'll have over 25 of their local member artists as well as guest artists specially juried in for this show.

The show will run June 6 through July 7 with an opening reception at the gallery on June 9 from 6-9 p.m. You are invited to attend and to immerse yourself in an evening of culture.

Mike Fred will serenade with his acoustic guitar and Bobbi Q. Brown will entertain with a watercolor demonstration. Light refreshments will be provided.

In Memory of Max Spector

The Brevard art world lost a great friend on May 5, 2012. Max Spector passed away. Max has been active in the arts in Brevard for years. He served on the board of directors of the Strawbridge Art League and could always be counted on to assist with exhibits. He also was on the committee for ArtWorks, the art festival in the Eau Gallie Arts District held the weekend before Thanksgiving every year. He also served on the Friends of the Library at the Eau Gallie Library for many years. His friendship will be missed as will his enthusiasm for the arts and his quick wit.

The Downtown Gallery is proud to announce the winners from the Titusville Art League's 48th Annual Spring Art Show are artists who are currently on display at our fine art gallery...

1st place in photography went to L.K. Phipps for "Peaceful Diversion" photograph on aluminum, and 2nd place went to Jeff Thamert for "Them Florida Days" photograph of the Econolockhatchee River.

Jan Coleman won 2nd place for "Ramosum Red Raku" hand built ceramic art and Diane DeShong Cannon took 3rd place for her watercolor "Early Morning Flight."
