It should come as no surprise to any blogger that using visual media is an important part of running a blog. Images give visual clarity to your posts and can also help your SEO with meta-tags. Blogs with a substantial and efficient use of visual media have a much higher chance of being shared on social news aggregators, which can multiply your page views in a single hour.

Here are four unique and exclusive ways you can use visual media to generate more pageviews:

Integrate photo app networks

Instagram is a new power player in the social media world and its influence will only grow now that it has been acquired by Facebook. Using Instagram as a photo app gives non-photographic bloggers a chance to stylize their images and then share them with millions of potential viewers. By integrating Instagram into your blog you may be able to substantially increase your traffic.

Get viral on YouTube

Viral video is still one of the quickest ways for bloggers to draw traffic to their domains. A video on YouTube that catches on fire can streak across the Internet like shooting star for everyone to see. If you have a lot of videos you might want to consider also using private video hosting in order to store videos for future use, releasing them to your Internet audience on an optimized schedule.

Pin your tales on the donkey

Pinterest is another one of the hottest new social networks and thousands of bloggers are successful using it to generate more traffic to their sites. Pinterest works fairly simply: you create boards on which you will post or ‘pin’ visual media. This media can be blog posts, photos, videos, or any form of online content that can link back to a URL. Fashion bloggers, food bloggers, and entertainment bloggers in particular should take advantage of this uniquely visual social network. Further reading about the traffic powers of Pintrest can be found here.

Use infographics

Infographics [Here are 55 different web-related infographics if you are curious!] are valuable for a variety of reasons: they are visually compelling; they express a lot of data and information in a small space; they are good for SEO because they create inbound links; they can help you to brand your online presence; and they’re easy and fun memes to share on social media sites. If you have a flair for creating neat visual graphics that contains interesting, well-researched data, your blog can benefit immensely from original infographics.

In Conclusion

These four tactics are almost certain to increase your blog traffic by leaps and bounds. All they require is an immersion into the newest visual media-based social networks and the creation of viral content and infographics.

Any questions or comments can be directed below and I’d be happy to address any concerns you may have!

As always, thanks for reading!

Video blogging is certainly nothing new. Although text-based content has always been the foremost blogging medium, bloggers have been using video for several years now in an attempt to diversify their offerings, post updates more quickly, and to convey certain ideas and information that are most easily understood through visual means. But video blogging has only grown in popularity over the past year. I’d venture a guess that this is the result of two factors: one, that embedded video advertising has become incredibly popular and profitable, and two, that the corporate world and business speaker for conferences are increasingly using video communication, in turn causing a trickle-down effect into the blogosphere.

The growth in its popularity, however, should not underscore the fact that video blogging is not for everyone. If you’re considering adding some videos to your blog, here are a few considerations to keep in mind:

What does your reader want?

The mantra that the “customer is always right” applies just as well to the blogging world as it does to a traditional small business. The satisfaction of your customers translates directly into Page Rank and advertising revenue. When contemplating the addition of video to your blog, then, you should keep the needs and wants of your readership base foremost in mind. Would your readers appreciate diversification or would they rather stick with pure text? Would their comprehension of your content be enhanced with the addition of video? Don’t pursue this any further if you cannot satisfactorily answer these questions.

Can it help SEO?

The addition of video blog posts can have a beneficial impact on a site’s SEO practices. This will only happen, though, if videos are posted with appropriate keywords and tags, if a portion of the site can be established as a dedicated video archive, and if all videos will be embedded into the site. If you’re able to make these modifications alongside your switch to video blogging, then the move may bring your some highly worthwhile benefits. If not, you may only harm your SEO by adding video.

Can you keep it clear and professional?

Some people are better at speaking in front of a camera than others. Along these lines, some bloggers are far better at writing text content and find themselves out of their element when they start incorporating video into their blog. If video blogging is to be worthwhile, the blogger should be able to clearly convey the content in a video post in a manner that is professional, engaging, and consistent. Do a test run, film a couple video posts, and see if you have what it takes. Since the quality of your content should ultimately be of utmost importance, don’t diversify simply for the sake of diversification if you expect that your quality levels will decrease in the process.

Conclusion

Hopefully these tips can help you decide whether video blogging is right for your site. A successful video blogger can widen his readership base, breed a livelier blog, boost SEO, and attract more lucrative advertisers. But all of these benefits can get turned on their heads if video blogging is not done well. Before taking the plunge, it’s important to make sure that video blogging is right for your blog – and for you.

If you haven’t got the time to learn HTML, CSS or PHP to create your own WordPress theme, you’re in luck. I’ve recently been reviewing premium WordPress themes for a project I’m working on and have decided to post some of the best ones I’ve found on the blog.

There is a common misconception with premium themes that I once had as well..

“Well, if it’s premium, that means I have to pay for it! I can probably find a free theme that is sufficient for me.”

I used to think that way, but look at it from an experienced designer/developer… If you can find what you are looking for, pay a decent price for the thing and get your site deployed, you can spend your time developing your business rather than looking for a free template that looks similar to the initial well designed premium theme.

In economics, this is known as, “Opportunity Cost”, but I will digress and get to the themes.

Enough Chatter – Show me the Goods

1. Effective Solutions

This theme is perfect for a company that offers creative services. The clock and overall design is very professional and leaves a fantastic first impression on the buyer.

A quick look under the hood (so to speak) tells me that the code is clean, efficient and easy to follow. Search engines will have no problems finding content that its users post using this template.

Price: $44

Demo: Click Here

2. Decore

Simply, a perfect theme for designers.. customizable front page images make this template an excellent candidate. A very professional look, I might add, and add the Jquery slideshow in the front, you’ve got an excellent template.

Clean code also makes this theme easy to read by the search engines.

Price: $52

Demo: Click Here

3. Marshall

A slick designer friendly theme that is easy to customize. The gradients really add to the overall look and it looks very nice.

Again, clean code makes this template great. These authors really know how to eliminate unnecessary code from their themes.

Price: $52

Demo: Click Here

Overall Outlook on Premiums

If you are serious about your online business generating more revenue for your company, don’t sweat the price. Think of it as an investment rather than an expense. I’d highly recommend TemplateMonster.com for all of their excellent authors creating wordpress templates.

When I visit a website, I’m not reading your content. I can probably bet that you’re doing the same thing right now and not reading mine. After years in the industry, I’ve learned many things about website usability among loads of other things. If you’re reading this right now and run a website, you’re in for a real treat.

What’s This Treat, Brad?

After years of formulating content and running a blog, I can direct your eyes to certain points in an article that I feel will give my readers relevant and beneficial knowledge. How is this done? Simply speaking, user’s don’t read… they scan.

The Mentality of the Internet Age

I’ve stated this before (previous article link), that content is created every second, of every day. You can’t beat the rush of new content formed by people like us. So, what can you do to make yourself a writer that internet users will appreciate? Write as if you have 5 seconds to convince your reader to scan a little more into your article.

If you fail to realize that the back button on a browser is used more than any other button, then you are doing yourself a real disservice by writing novel length articles. Short. Concise. To the point. This will attract more readers, referrals, comments to your sites.

Blocks of text do no favours for any reader. If I can’t read what you are trying to say in two or three sentences, I will push back and probably never return again. It’s not you, it’s just the plethora of information available on the web that might summarize it for me, reducing time wasted searching for information.

Well, Jeez! How do you create scannable content?

I’m glad you read that. To create scannable content, here are methods that I employ on my sites:

Bold your important words. This attracts the eye to words in the sentences.

Use headings. This gets your content of writing away from being blocks of text and more towards scanner friendly content.

Pictures, Pictures and More Pictures. If you don’t add pictures to attract interest to your articles, you are losing out.. Big time. With hundreds of millions of pictures available on the internet, you should take advantage of them and put them in your post.

Lists. Let me tell you something. Scanners LOVE lists. The dots beside the content are screaming, “I’m organized and in a concise format for you to read me in!” and that makes scanners… interested.

Summarize. Do not make paragraph long bullet points.

We are in a New Age of Publishing

I think the old media (mostly newspaper), are going to be less and less in demand. Why? The new generation is used to getting their information on the internet and the articles in the newspaper aren’t concise. They give all the details, in blocks of text, with little bolding or lists. Which makes us scanners, well, want to push the back button. (I know that’s not possible but I have to try and tie it in).

I could see major problems in the future for the owners of these publishing companies unless they adapt. The New York Times has done an excellent job putting up a paywall and branching out to apps on the iPad and Android market.

Will a Paywall work?

For people that are dedicated to The New York Times for their news, yes. For others that are looking to read about a topic, no. The site states that you can read 20 articles before having to pay for it.

As stated above:

“Content is created every second, of every day. You can’t beat the rush of new content.”

I think they are going to have a real problem in the future as people simply don’t want to pay for content. Where you can pay for it, it’s probably already out there for free.

Brad.. Scanning, New York Times, Internet Age.. Tie all of this together

Sure. If you don’t keep pace with the publishing trend, you’ll have a really hard time growing your site. Growth is good. Growth is money. More Money is fine. Publish high quality content that is easy to read. That is all.

Community Feedback

Do you agree about the movement of the internet publishing? Is there something I missed? Earn yourself a spot as this article’s top contributor.

Unfortunately for us bloggers, that category of “Unnecessary Spending” is where we fall into. So, should we just shrink away and wait for the economy to bounce back?

No Thanks.

If your having some trouble filling those advertising spots on your blog or website, Here is a guide of ways you can fill them, while benefiting your website and internet appearance.

Ways To Fill Your Advertising Space In These Rough Economic Times:

Instead of waiting for advertisers to contact you, go out and find some! A great start would be Sitepoint’s WTB (Want To Buy) section where you will find many advertisers and webmasters wanting advertisements and links. Another way to contact potential advertisers is to search Sponsoredreviews’s website for people wanting to buy posts in your niche, and then simply contact them via email.

Propose link exchanges with fellow bloggers, either graphical or textual. Its a simple process of contacting another person in your niche and exchanging details. You both gain a backlink, exposure, and tap into each other’s visitor stream.

Affiliate marketing. Choose a product and start promoting it! You usually get paid via Cost Per Action, Cost Per Click or Cost Per Lead.

Self-Fill. Have a couple other websites? Fill in the adspace with ads from your different websites. This makes your site appear to have sponsors, which entices other people to purchase some. When they do, just knock off a “Self-Filler” ad and replace it with a real sponsor.

Important Note:

Whatever you do, do not leave 8 spaces open saying “Advertise here”. A quote from DirectSalesWebMarketing.com (now discontinued, domain is not found):

Those blogs that have anywhere between two and TEN 125×125 ad spots that simply say, “ADVERTISE HERE“, right out there for the world to see. I’ve even seen some use FLASH!

Aye Curumba.

Do you know how it looks to potential advertisers? BAD. Real bad. Amateurish in the least, but D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-E at it’s worst.

This couldn’t be more correct – People have a “following” mentality when it comes to the internet. What I mean by this is that if people see a large number of RSS Subscribers, they are more likely to subscribe. If people see 6 ad spots from different sponsors, they are more likely to purchase one.

How is your blog dealing with the economic crisis? Are your profits slowing, or coming to a complete stand still?

There are a lot of things that you can do to get attention to your blog such as creating quality content, working with freelance writers, guest blogging, and using SEO to increase your online profile but there’s another aspect that many people need to consider and that’s usability/functionality. It depends on what your blog is for but if you’re looking to improve readership and traffic you need to optimize the way in which people are interfacing with your content.

Now you can define usability in many ways. Some would say that making it as user-friendly as possible is best. Others say that it’s all about the flow of a blog. Regardless of the approach, it’s important to think of your blog in the way an architect would when planning the construction of a building. You have to think of every detail and how users organically move through your site. Having a feedback option is nice but it’s limited. It’s not like doing a reverse phone lookup allowing you to actually ask questions as to what’s working and what’s not.

You want to really know what people think about your site and how effective it is but you should also realize that you shouldn’t leave it solely up to the user. People don’t always know how things should work, but simply that they don’t like your blog’s set-up. This can be incredibly unhelpful. Here are some helpful ideas to improve the overall usability of your blog.

Keeping It Simple:

Sometimes running lean is the best way to go. You may have features on your blog that you like but may be superfluous information. You have to consider that the average person on the Internet is already on near overload from the information that’s thrown at them. When people are fed tons and tons of data, one of the best things you can do is not to add to the white noise. You need to think of it in terms of your readers. What do they want and what can you live without.

Space Optimization:

You need to take a good hard look at your site and just forget the content. Look at the white space that’s not being used. You need to be optimizing every space you can. NOTE: This doesn’t mean that you need to cram every square inch of space with junk. See the tip above. You need to keep it essential but you can also apply well thought out graphics and how your content is spaced out. Consider everything and changes could be as simple as increasing the margins, fonts, and other basic elements. Of course all of this should be done in moderation and will go a long way towards improving the look of your blog.

When an architect looks at the blueprints for a building, they consider how the light is caught through the windows. How people will move through the rooms. Where things will look and function best. This is no different when you’re drafting a blog. You want to consider the flow and feeling of a blog. You want it to seem so natural that they don’t even notice that they’ve gone through a lot of your content where each page leads to the next in a fluid way. Follow these tips and others to get Improve your blogs’ usability.

If you approach and invest in your blog properly, it will be successful. Below are a few tips for investing in your blog’s future.

Investing Time and Effort:

Like any other business going to day, the necessary investment of your attention, time, and effort is essential to running a blog. For example, it takes time to produce quality content like articles and reviews. If your work is half-hearted and poorly composed, people aren’t going to see you as an authority. It’s also important to update and update often. People will quit seeking you out if you’re rarely updating your content. You have to stay involved in your blog. If you can’t generate the drive or find the time to put towards your blog, then why would you expect other people to do so?

Finding The Funding:

If you need to get some extra funding to update or work on your blog then you should look at the best ways to build capital. There are a lot of bloggers who review products and post them online for people to read. This is one of the most popular ways for people to make money from their blog and makes the whole process more like a business than anything else. You can even choose the kinds of products that you’d be interested in reviewing. You can also invest in good stock picks that will raise your money. You can even check up on your investments and picks in between blog entries. You can use your blog to start bringing in a revenue stream and that way you’ll be able to update more often and help your blog evolve.

Using SEO:

You might think that Search Engine Optimization is for businesses a blog is basically a business. Using SEO will help you build your online profile and increase your search ranking. You may have the best blog in the world but if no one knows about it then you’re wasting your time. SEO is perfect for attracting the right visitors to your web site. It’s about getting you in touch with the people that would be most interested in what you’re doing. Often times it’s a businesses approach to SEO that either ensures its success or failure.

Think about using some of these tips, and others, for the purposes of improving your blog and investing in its longevity. Look at your blog as a business and make sure you’re putting in the time and effort that is needed. Don’t get discouraged. Sometimes it takes a while for something to catch on but if you’re noticing that it’s just not working, you might need to think about getting some professional help at getting the word out. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Investing in a blog takes a lot more than money to make it work and it will be most successful when every avenue is taken.

>> Message Body:
>> Hey Brad,
>> I am new to web design and I absolutelty love doing it. I have been
>> checking out your stuff and it as really inspired me. I would love
>> to one day be able to create website for others, and especially
>> create themes for blogs. I feel like I’m getting decent with HTML,
>> CSS, and even a little javascript. I am at a point now where I feel
>> a little stuck, like I reached the limit of what I can teach myself
>> (which I know is not true). What advise if any could you give me?
>> Thanks alot!

> Hey Aspiring Web Designer,
>
> I know what you mean.. taking that next step is kind of difficult.
>
> Personally, I’ve found great success in creating WordPress themes. I
> usually decide on what I want it to look like and then create the
> design. You’d be surprised at how much you can learn through
> experience.
>
> If you are not at the point of creating a WordPress theme, you could
> do one of two things:
>
> 1) Take an existing theme and modify it.. Just choose something like
> taking a 2 column theme and turning it into a 3 column one. How
> about a Jquery Slideshow plugin on the sidebar? Every little thing
> you do adds up.
>
> 2) Mess around with a WordPress Theme framework such as Thematic,
> break it and see what you did that doesn’t work, noting it for the
> future. Experiment with different functions and try anything and
> everything you can think of.
>
> That’s how I got started with Web Development.
>
> Thanks for your email!
>
> Brad Ney.

Brad,

Hey man, I just wanted to say thanks for the response and the advice.
I am going to start messing with wordpress themes right away. Anything
I can do to get better would be great. I have been trying to create my
own from scratch a little bit but I keep hitting some road blocks so
maybe just tweaking some that has already been create would help me.

WordPress is great and I use it on every site I build. As I continually follow what is developed for this Content Management System, I realize that there are many things that blog owners can do to speed up their loading times. This doesn’t involve adding header codes to compress the content, rather utilizing a plugin that creates a HTML based document of your dynamic WordPress blog.

How To Cache WordPress for Maximum Efficiency

The caching techniques I’m going to be talking about later takes all of the dynamic PHP contents of your blog and puts it into a HTML document. That means this plugin takes your template (header, body, sidebar(s), footer) and articles and puts it into one document. The benefit of doing this is that the server does not need to “construct” the HTML document using various PHP calls to the MYSQL database and theme files each time a visitor loads your blog.

Let me put it to you in the simplest form possible – The difference between a cached blog and a standard WordPress install is monumental. A cached blog is like giving a person an infographic – one image with all the important information on it, organized and concise. A standard WordPress install (uncached blog) is like giving a person a 20 page report filled with text and telling them to make sense out of it. As you can see the benefits of caching your WordPress website is a very good idea.

The De Facto Standard for WordPress Caching – W3 Total Cache

This plugin combines various aspects of other plug-ins to ensure that everything is running at maximum efficiency. In this tutorial were going to look at how to set up this plugin and configure it.

Step One – Download and Install W3 Total Cache

This plugin can be found at this repository and installation with WordPress 3.0 is very easy. Simply upload it using WordPress’s built-in plug-in installation system and you’re ready to continue to step two.

Step Two – Page Cache Settings and Configuration

Caching pages will reduce the response time of your site and increase the concurrency (scale) of your web server.

All right in this step were going to be setting up the page cache for your WordPress website. Click the “W3 Total Cache” option under the settings tab in your WordPress administration area. You are now brought to the plugin’s main page with various settings and this step were just enough focus on the page cache configuration.

So go ahead and click the checkbox, enabling it. For most of you reading this, choosing Disk (Enhanced) is your best option for shared hosts. However if you happen to be on a dedicated or virtual server feel free to install APC caching which is what I use. Now click “save changes” to enable the caching on your site.

Step Three – Minify settings and configuration

Minification can decrease file size of HTML, CSS, JS and feeds respectively by ~10% on average.

Like in the previous step we are going to need to enable Minify for it to work on our WordPress blog, so enable it and click save changes, replicating the same option that you did in step two (IE – Disk Enhanced/APC). Now at the very top you’ll see “Minify Settings” – we’re going to need to configure it before this starts working.

Here’s what I have on my WordPress blog:

HTML Minify settings: Enable

JS Minify settings: Enable

CSS Minify settings: Enable

There are a couple of them notes that you should be aware of:

The JavaScript options are left unchecked due to various plugins dependencies on them. The plug-ins that depend on JavaScript to perform various tasks do not work if you combine them into one file and I know this from personal experience. This isn’t W3 total Cache’s fault rather the way the plugins are coated to specifically call the scripts in the document.

For CSS minification to work you’re going to need to add each stylesheet to the plugin by hand. For most themes the default is: wp-content/themes/YourThemeName/style.css - if you need help finding yours feel free to ask me in the comments and I’ll take a look at your site.

Step Four – Database cache settings

Caching database objects may decrease the response time of your blog by up to 100x.

This plugin will also cache your database to make it more efficient when generating a page cache. Feel free to go to the plugin’s page and enable it.

This step is pretty easy because there are no options that you need to configure specific settings page.

Step five (optional) – CDN Configuration and Settings

If you utilize a Content Delivery Network to serve your files faster to your visitors than this plugin will also rewrite your URLs to the files on the CDN. This saves you a lot of time from having to go in manually to your theme files and edit each file accordingly. If you do not have a CDN then there’s no reason to do this step – you are finished! Although I would encourage you to take advantage of MaxCDN’s offer that I wrote about earlier which you can view here.

We’re going to need to configure the CDN settings of this plugin, so please click the, “CDN Settings”. On this page there is a box for you to insert your content delivery network URL which you can obtain from your provider. Simply enter your URL and click save changes in the plug-in will automatically start using the files on the CDN and rather than on your own web hosting server.

Conclusion — A Mighty Fast (Cached) WordPress Blog

Since utilizing this plug-in on my own personal blogs and clients blogs I’ve noticed a severe increase in the responsiveness and load times of each website. If you are serious about taking your blog and expanding its reader base a fast website is critical. Luckily people like Fredrick Townes create excellent solutions to take a couple hour optimization job and turn it into a 10 minute “push-button” cache job.

Do you currently use any caching plug-in for WordPress?

How has this plug-in affected your load speed?

Do you notice a difference?

I recently downloaded a trial of Market Samurai to test it to see if it was any better than Website Auditor (I did a review of the tool a while back). After a thorough run through of the software, I’d say that it does an excellent job of showing untapped niches for your specified keywords. I discovered various keywords that had a low amount of competition and a decent amount of search traffic.

The Pros of Market Samurai:

The Information it Acquires - Not only does it find a large amount of keywords related to your initial project keyword, it finds out important statistics like the Searches per day, Competition Per Keyword and more importantly the Title Competition for each keyword (the exact keyword in the title of the webpages). This information can make or break an SEO campaign and this tool makes it easy to find worthwhile keywords.

The Domains it Finds – With their new product, DomainSamurai, you can find domains that include the keyword in the domain name, which makes SEO much easier. It will automatically find domains using its built in prefixes and suffixes, or you can define your own.

The Monetization Opportunities – Market Samurai will automatically search Amazon, Commission Junction and Clickbank for relevant products to put on your niche sites. You can separate the results based on price and payout.

The Cons of Market Samurai:

The “Promotion” Tool Isn’t The Greatest – This tool will find backlink opportunities for your keywords, the problem is that it relies on leaving a trackback to the website, hoping that the webmaster will link back to your website. That’s all fine and dandy if you have a willing webmaster that will give you a backlink, but most track backs now a days go unnoticed.

Although, if your trying to create a niche based website based around a keyword, you should most likely know how to promote your site without the help of a tool, otherwise it might be a very hard task.

Overall Impressions and Rating:

I think this software is a must have for webmasters and bloggers alike. Due to its versatile uses and useful information it produces on any keyword that it is given, the tool is very helpful. For blogs, you can find untapped keywords for your next article and enjoy some free SEO traffic. For marketers, it takes 10 tools that you previously used and puts it into one.

You can download a free trial at MarketSamurai.com and get hooked like I did… the possibilities are endless.
