Backyart is an arts forum designed to encourage conversation and collaboration between artists working in all mediums. The BoroThreads Story

The origins of BoroThreads begins as many great tales start out these days–with an ad on Craigslist. Marcos Salazar and Gabriel Barbaro first got to know each other in the spring of 2008 when Marcos needed to move out of his overpriced apartment in Park Slope for a month. As Marcos searched Craigslist he came upon a two bedroom a few blocks away with an extra room. The next day he went to visit the place and met Alex, the fellow subletting his room, as well as his roommate, Gabriel. The three gents quickly hit it off and the deal was sealed with a handshake…and of course, a subletting agreement (make sure to always use one when subletting – it has definitely helped when a subletter spilled red wine all over Marcos’ sheets, comforter, and bed).

Over the next month, Marcos and Gabriel became good friends while hanging out in the apartment, talking about computers, websites, tech, the neighborhood, New York, Amherst (where Gabriel grew up and Marcos went to college), and many other super neato things. After the month was up Marcos moved out of the apartment, but both continued to stay in touch and hang out at cafes around The Slope.

Then one fall day when they were hanging out at Cocoa Bar Gabriel started talking to Marcos about Marcos’ DC based t-shirt business DistrictTees.com. Gabriel asked if Marcos had ever thought about opening up a similar type of store in New York. Marcos admitted he had given it some thought shortly after launching DistrictTees, but at the time he was living in DC and didn’t know New York well enough to come up with enough shirts. But as Gabriel and Marcos started discussing the possibility of such a t-shirt company, they realized that both of them had a lot of great ideas for designs that focused on the fun and interesting things about living in the New York City. They quickly got to work and after many months of planning, designing, and coding, BoroThreads was born and the rest is history - just like Eliot Spitzer’s political career.
