Bill description: This bill would prohibit private possession of big cats except at highly qualified facilities such as accredited sanctuaries, would require any persons who currently possess big cats to register those animals with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and would outlaw the breeding of any big cat except at accredited zoos and certain research and educational institutions.

Bill description: This bill would phase in a requirement that non-lead ammunition be used in hunting statewide in California by July 2016. Lead has been widely known as a toxin for more than 2,000 years. The Centers for Disease Control reports there is no safe level of lead for humans.

Bill description: This bill, sponsored by Born Free USA, creates the Lion Meat Act. It provides that it is unlawful for any person to slaughter a lion or for any person to possess, breed, import or export from this state, buy or sell lions for the purpose of slaughter. It provides that it is unlawful to commercialize lion meat. It authorizes the Department of Agriculture to adopt and enforce any rules necessary to carry out the provisions of the act. And it provides that whoever violates any provision of the act shall be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor. Upon passage the bill would take effect immediately.

Missouri's S.B. 149 Helps Primates

Bill description: This bill amends the Large Carnivore Act and creates the Non-Human Primate Act. The changes to the Large Carnivore Act will streamline the process for registering large carnivores, helping the state Department of Agriculture to better enforce permitting laws. The Non-Human Primate Act will ban the possession of baboons and great apes.

Bill description: This bill would require nonlethal procedures, as defined, to be used when removing or taking any mountain lion perceived to be an imminent threat to public health or safety unless the mountain lion can reasonably be expected to cause immediate death or physical harm. This bill would authorize the department or an appropriate local agency to partner with qualified individuals, educational institutions, governmental agencies or nongovernmental organizations to implement nonlethal procedures.

AB 1213: The Bobcat Protection Act of 2013

Bill description: This bill would prohibit the commercial trapping of bobcats in California, along with the commercial sale and export of bobcat pelts. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's current authority to issue depredation permits for bobcats would not be affected. Hunting of bobcats consistent with existing law and regulations would still be allowed in California.
