How dare he assume that I can’t be both? I’m woman, hear me roar! Then I got pregnant and thought to myself, I can do this with my eyes closed. Then I had a kid and thought, “no problem.” And then I went back to work.

A short 12 weeks with my child and it was time to return. It was then I quickly realized the problem: my path is no longer my choice. Even though I successfully gave birth and returned to work, as programmed, scheduled and promised, there was a stigma that had nothing to do with my “ability”. There was a “fear” of my mothering desires.

Fast forward to baby #2. I returned to work like a trooper. But the truth I realized faster than ever is that things changed. Life is just different now and I can only be who I can be: a working mom, who has restrictions of “me time”, which is far from having anything to do with manicures and cocktails. A working mom who can’t go out tonight for a drink in the city, who can’t take an 8am call or a 5pm sales pitch. A working mom who has to say “no” to the perfect project and may not be offered that promotion after all. A mom who saves PTO for kids’ sick days, stays up all night and drinks coffee all day to stay awake. A mom who would rather be covered in spit up and making glitter paintings instead of ensuring my clients haven’t forgotten their deliverables…again. And most importantly, a working mom, who is ok with the fact that she’s chosen the best path. The path that she is most comfortable with and one she will stop torturing herself about choosing because she wanted to raise a family.

So here’s to you, working mom, I salute you. Whether you don’t get that promotion because your boss is too scared to trust important work to a new mom or you turn down the perfect opportunity so you can spend more time with your kid. You are doing the right thing because you know in your heart it’s the right thing to do.

Let’s put the guilt aside, have another coffee and take a deep breath. The kids will be home soon and the evening will glitter again.

A woman's path

Very early in my career, I was asked, “will you choose the career route or the mommy route?” At the time, I was appalled by the question.
