30 years ago today, on April 17, 1986, Cherokee Family Violence Center went live with a conference at what is now known as Reinhardt University (@goreinhardt). In those years CFVC has grown to be a leader in the movement against #domesticviolence.

I spent a piece of this morning watching Nine Inch Nails on Austin City Limits, which aired during the wee hours of this morning. Since I became a NIN fan in 1992 or so, a legitimate television performance has been a pretty rare occurrence. I wanted to share this link, hoping it might offer some of you who only know NIN as “that band that sings that fuck you like an animal song” the opportunity to see that there is more to the music than old-school shock value, and maybe get an insight into why I am such a fan. For the record, this is not my favorite NIN lineup [although I do have a keen appreciation for Josh Eustis’ hotness, Pino Palladino’s neck strength (and yeah, he’s the one that used to play with the Who!), and my favorite local musician, Robin Finck’s, continued ability to carry off many haircuts at one time], but I think it might be the best illustration of just how different Trent Reznor and Company are, from many people’s perceptions. Hope you enjoy!

I own a lot of these posters, but it’s cool to see them all together like this. I know there are a couple of hardcore NIN fans that have the entire collection themselves, but for me, they are just a reminder of a great time, traveling with my friends and listening to great music. Sure some are worth some money, but those are the very ones I would never, ever sell — including Charlotte 2006 (pictured in the second panel from the bottom, middle row, second from right). That was the greatest concert I have ever attended, and I don’t expect that it will ever be surpassed. It was, quite literally, the perfect storm.

Anyway, thanks to NIN and Rob Sheridan for sharing these, as a collection. It makes me excited to wonder what will be in the next round of promos/collectibles now that NIN has announced that there will be touring in the near future.

Did a little traveling this week and was fortunate enough to be able to see one of my favorite bands, Circa Survive, at Amos’ Southend in Charlotte, NC. I have been seeing these guys play shows for several years now, as odd as that seems – time flies by; saw them play their first show in Atlanta and was immediately hooked. Since then, well, I’m not exactly sure how many times I have seen them, but I can recall being in at least five states to see them play (I did other things in those places, too – I’m no stalker, you weirdos! haha). After Charlotte, Anthony Green was nice enough to extend me an invite to their sold out show at Center Stage, here in Atlanta…and, well, I obliged. Despite missing what I hear was a killer set by the Foo Fighters, who were across town at Music Midtown, I could not be happier with my decision to see Circa play again. The new material off last month’s Violent Waves [Released 8/28/12, Independent] has recharged the band, and performing to what I like to call “the sea of hands” clutching towards Anthony brings a real electricity to each performance. If you have not heard this band, you are missing out on one of the most progressive bands on the road these days. You are doing yourself more of an injustice if you do not see them when they are in your area.

This video was recorded before the Center Stage show as a part of Ryan Russell’s “Nervous Energies” performance series and features my favorite song from Violent Waves, “Sharp Practice." I thought it would be fun to share.

For good measure (and like they teach us here in the South), I’d like to say another quick thanks to Anthony for his friendship and hospitality! I’ll share this photo from Charlotte with you guys, as well:

I saw this band, New York Rivals, open for the Lemonheads a couple of times and found them to be utterly enjoyable. Super nice dudes with ultra white teeth. Now that I am thinking about all of their positive points, I think one of them is named Nash or something equally as awesome. So, that’s a bonus, right?

While the image overlays in this video just made me a bit motion sick, I still wanted to share. Turns out either I suck at googling or they do not have a proper website, but you can hear a bit more on the web, so check them out, y'all.
