A famous author has just called you to design a book jacket for his/her next book! This author has seen your work before and thought you would be perfect for the job.

The author gives you the following information:

Title of the Book – Top 10 Author Blogs

In this book he/she writes about ten of the best author blogs and the characteristics that make them stand out, based on information gathered by Codex Group and gives new/aspiring authors advice on how to reach their readers through blogging.

*The dimensions for the book jacket are (inches):

Overall: 18.625 x 7.25
Flaps: 3.5 each
Front & Back: 4.625 each
Spine: 1.625
Allow a .375 wrap for each flap
Use at least 1/8″ beyond trim for any bleeds

This image was done following the dimensions specified in the instructions. Unfortunately those dimensions produce a LARGE image, so in order to conserve some space, I've scaled down the image.

Poem For Students

I wrote this poem at 4:30PM on March 30 2005. Back then I was an undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. (CAAM). I was getting my education courses for teacher certification program. I had a class, that unfortunately, let out around quiting time and I was always stuck in the traffic jam between the students and the working population all trying to go home at the same time. The only way to get home was driving down Highway #2, crossing the dreaded section between Grande and the hospital. Lord! How did I survive?

Enjoy.

Lord, grant me the patience to comprehend
that from here I go to a traffic jam,
and that in an hour and a half,
I'll be home.

Also, Lord, grant me the ability to understand
that there are drivers that obey the speed limit,
break on yellow lights, and yield to the crossing ants.

But, thank you Lord,
for allowing my car to start,
and that the A/C and radio work!

It was originally written in Spanish:

Señor, deme la paciencia para comprender,
que de aquí voy para un tapón,
y que en una hora y media,
llegare a mi casa.

Además, Señor, deme la habilidad de entender,
que hay conductores que guían al limite de velocidad,
que frenan en la luz amarilla
y que le dan paso hasta la hormiga.

Pero, gracias, Señor, por permitir
que mi carro prenda
y que el aire y el radio funcionan.

Challenge for graphic designers

You must create an image (.png, please) that inspires a desire to read. It may have words, but the image must speak to the audience on its own. You must complete this in 4 sizes (in pixels): 32×32, 48×48, 64×64, and 128×128.

Here is my entry for the graphic design challenge, the 128x128 version. Making it any smaller would seriously hurt the message, so I did not submit the smaller versions.
Feel free to use this image in your own personal blogs or websites; please provide a link back to this blog. This image is not for commercial use.

Time for a challenge!

A friend of mine likes to write stories, but gets a bit lazy between school work and crocheting amigurumis and reading and…etc. Meanwhile I’m constantly looking for inspiration to create new graphic designs for multiple uses, so I thought it would be a great idea for us to challenge each other once a week to keep our creativity on its toes.

Here is the idea:

Every Monday I will send her one writing challenge she will post on her blog: onceuponabook.wordpress.com.

In return, she will send me a graphic design challenge that I will post to this blog. The posts will always be titled: Monday’s Challenge”, along with the date. Example: “Monday’s Challenge 6/15/09”. The design/story must be posted no later than Saturday of that week by 11:59pm.

If you are a graphic designer or children’s/young adult writer or enthusiast and would like to participate, simply access either of these blogs on Mondays (or, better yet, subscribe!) and take on the challenge. Once you are finished with the week’s challenge, post it on your own blog and send me the link so I can post it here.

If you don’t have a blog but want to participate, you can post your design/story as a comment to the Monday blog or send me the story/design via e-mail and I’ll make sure it gets posted in the right place. If you send it to me via e-mail, please be sure to write “Monday’s Challenge (and date)” as a subject and include your name (or nickname/penname, if you prefer), and location (something general like Orlando, FL…Norwood, MA, etc. If you want to include a link to your website or blog, that would be fine, too!)

If we get a lot of responses this could eventually develop into a contest with prizes, but for now, we’ll do it for practice and pure enjoyment!

That said, please keep your entries PG – PG 13 please!

Expression I Got From My Dad 0.1

Mira 'pa Yauco

Translation: Look to Yauco / Look towards Yauco

I say this phrase almost daily. It's that good. But why look to Yauco? Well, Yauco is a one of the 78 municipality's of Puerto Rico. Located in the southern part of the Island, between Guanica/Sabana Grande and Guayanilla. Also known as "El pueblo del cafe" (the town of coffee).

I don't know were this particular expression came from, as I've only heard my family use it, and I've never asked anyone about the history behind it. Usually it is said in times of awe or when one is found in incredulous situations. Sort of like saying: "I can't believe that!" or "Will you look at that?!"

Interestingly enough, once I was in Yauco having one of those conversations were it's half gossip and half discussion, and this phrase came up. We all turned and looked at the town (the majority of the town is on a hill) and laughed. Mira 'pa Yauco! Estamos en Yauco!

On a side topic I would like to add that Yauco is a pretty cool town. It's build on a hill (or mountain) and has this big flag flapping in the wind, you can't miss it. It was also one of the towns I worked in when I lived in Puerto Rico. In addition, Tony Croatto immortalized it in a song (that is based on a poem) and every time I drive by Yauco I have to sing the verse:

"Yauco pueblo del cafe / Desde lejos se te ve /
Sobre un monte recostado / Pasa un rio por tu lado / Que da frescura a tu suelo"

Bonetisms

What are Bonetisms?
They are expressions that are unique to my family. Basically they are words that I blend together from the English and Spanish language. Other people would call them Spanglish, but I call them Bonetisms. They are also expressions that my father frequently says, I've grow up with them over the years, and now are part of my everyday vocabulary. In other words, they are made-up words that don't mean anything to anyone, but me and my family.

This is my first ever blog.
I'm trying this technology out, after spending a few hours at the Edublog conference over at the RUM. I can't promise much will be added to this blog, but I will try to write as often as I can.
