Scrabble Solver Basics

BoLS Boardgames has several Scrabble solvers and anagram word finders. Here are the basics to these tools and how to get the most out of them.

Scrabble Word Finder - Anagram Solver - Word Finder
Our most popular online tool. This tool is designed to accept a set of between 2 and 10 letters, and output a list of all possible words based on the dictionary the user selects.

1) Enter your desired letters.
2) Enter any letters already on the board you are attempting to use as either a prefix, or suffix.
3) Select the Scrabble dictionary you are using based on your location.
4) Press the "View Words" button.

The tool will display a list of all matching words, along with how much time the search took, and sort the results by length of word. You may have to scroll down to see later words based on what type of computer, or mobile device you are using.

5) Press the "clear" button to clear out the letter entry fields, while still displaying the results of the last search. This feature allows you to prepare for the next search quickly while still taking note of the previous results.

Scrabble Dictionary Lookup
This popular tool helps you confirm words you are uncertain about quickly during a game. It will quickly confirm whether or not that is a valid word in several popular dictionaries.

1) Enter the word in question in the text entry field.
2) Press the "Lookup" button.

The tool will display a colorcoded square for each popular dictionary supported. A green square indicates the word is valid, while a red square indicated the entered word was not found in the dictionary.

3) Press the "clear" button to clear out the word entry fields, while still displaying the results of the last search. This feature allows you to prepare for the next search quickly while still taking note of the previous results.

Boggle Solver
This tool allows a user to enter a grid of letters as found in several popular games such as Boggle and WordRacer, and outputs a list of all possible words based on the dictionary the user selects.

1) Select the board you wish to solve for (standard Boggle is the default, but alternative WordRacer boards are available).
2) Enter the letters on your selected board
3) Choose whether you wish "q" to count as "qu" (the Boggle default).
4) Press the "View Words" button

Scrabble Strategy and Tips

Everyone wants to be a Scrabble master, and each journey begins with the first few steps. There are many, many avenues to improving your game, but here are a handful anyone can use to become the best word finder out there, even in your very next game. Note that these tips work with Words with Friends as well.

Out of Game Practice
Read whenever you can. If you have a Scrabble dictionary flip through it in your spare time. It’s a fast and easy way to constantly expand your vocabulary.

Anagram solvers. Use online anagram solvers (like BoLS Boardgames) to practice. Pull out sets of common tiles and write down all the words you can find. Then compare your list to the full results found via the Scrabble solver tool, noting easily built words you were unaware of.

Seek out varied players. Playing against a larger group of people will improve your skills faster as you encounter different strategies and tactics.

2-Letter Words (and 3-Letter ones)
One of the biggest things you can do to improve your game is to memorize the 2-letter words. There are a little under 150 of these based on your locale, and what Scrabble Dictionary you are using. Memorizing these will improve your defensive play and scoring overnight.

In the hands of an experienced player 2-letter words will both let you avoid passing, as well as racking up some quick extra points here and there. They often can open up unexpected double and triple word plays, that your opponent may not have anticipated.

On defense, the two-letter words can keep you safe from an opponent who may be overly aggressive. With cautious play, you can reliably score, while not opening up high scoring play opportunities for the opposing player.

Once you’ve mastered the 2-letter ones, move onto the 3-letter ones. They principles listed above are still in effect, but the scoring abilities are a bit higher, while the defensive play abilities are lower as they aren’t as easy to jam into all types of tight spots on the table.

Tile Rack Management
Shuffle, Shuffle, Shuffle. Constantly move your tiles around your rack. It will let you see things in a new light and open up unseen possibilities. Keeping a static rack is a surefire way to miss opportunities and underperform.

Bingos for Victory. Using all seven tiles in your rack (a 'Bingo' or 'Bonus' in the United Kingdom) is a highly rewarded achievement in Scrabble with a +50 bonus score for each occurrence. While tricky to achieve, the most common strategy is built around hoarding common multipurpose letters such as A,E,I,N,T and others. A play strategy of using uncommon letters as fast as possible for shorter lower scoring words, while hoarding common and generic (see above) letters for Bingo plays can net you several per game, which can push you into the winner’s circle over non-Bingo based playstyles.

Playstyle Strategies
Pace Yourself. Try to always think at least one turn ahead. If you have a large word you can use this turn that will leave you with only consonants next turn, consider a more conservative play to preserve your options for example.

Leverage Rare Tiles. If you’ve looked over the Tile Distribution table you will see that there are several rare tiles (such as C,F,H,J and others) which are rare. When you get one of these high value tiles, you should always endeavor to maximize its value. Always try to leverage these tiles on letter or word multiplier squares if at all possible, even at the expense of longer non-multiplier scoring words that may be possible.

Master the Q. Q is a very tricky letter, as it is most often used with the somewhat rare U tile. Be sure to memorize the list of “Q without U” words list especially the two-letter ‘QI’ to get out of sticky situations, and rid yourself of that Q as fast as you can.

Safeguard your Utility Tiles. The Blank tiles (which can count as any letter) as well as the S, R, and D tiles (which are used most often to an existing long word plural) are so generically useful, they require special strategy. In general, you should hold onto these tiles, awaiting the opportunity to use then for long high scoring words. The S tile in particular can often be used to build two simultaneous words by being appended onto an existing word.

Defense - Don’t Give Your Opponent Gifts. Beware of going for the short-term long word plays if they lay out easy double or triple word plays by your opponent. With an experienced player, be especially aware his their ability to use those 2-letter words your already memorized – right? Learning to balance your offensive plays while not opening yourself up for a high scoring counter play will only come with time and practice.

SCRABBLE: Scrabble Champ Wins with Vowel Movements

It's not much of a stretch to call Nigel Richards a wordsmith.

The champion of the 2010 National Scrabble Championship has a photographic memory, said John D. Williams, Jr., the head of the tournament that wrapped Wednesday at the Hotel InterContinental in Dallas, Texas.

"He is probably the best Scrabble player in the world at this point," Williams said of the 43-year-old New Zealand security analyst, who lives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. "He's got the entire dictionary memorized. He's pretty much a Scrabble machine, if such a thing exists."

SCRABBLE: Proper Nouns Cause an Uproar

All the Scrabble world was up in arms over the reported inclusion of proper Nouns in the venerable and beloved boardgame.

Stefan Fatsis, a Washington-based Scrabble coach and devoted chronicler of the Scrabble world, summed up the snafu (8 points) this way: "It's a case of corporate flackery and media incompetence completely misleading the public."

What caused about 10,000 near-heart attacks from London to El Segundo, Calif., began a few days ago with a tiny item in a British trade paper. It referred to Mattel's plans to introduce a new kind of Scrabble that would permit the use of proper nouns.

Scrabble Dictionaries

There are two popular competition word lists used in various parts of the world: TWL and SOWPODS. The North American 2006 Official Tournament and Club Word List, Second Edition (OWL2), became official for use in American, Canadian, Israeli and Thai club and tournament play on March 1, 2006 (or, for school use, the bowdlerized Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, Fourth Edition (OSPD4)). Early printings of OWL2 and OSPD4 must be amended according to corrigenda posted at the National Scrabble Association web site. North American competitions use the Long Words List for longer words.

The OWL2 and the OSPD4 are compiled using four (originally five) major college-level dictionaries, including Merriam-Webster (10th and 11th editions, respectively). If a word appears (or historically appeared) in at least one of the dictionaries, it is included in the OWL2 and the OSPD4, unless the word has only an offensive meaning, in which case it is only included in the OWL2. The key difference between the OSPD4 and the OWL2 is that the OSPD4 is marketed for "home and school" use, and has been expurgated of many words which their source dictionaries judged offensive, rendering the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary less fit for official Scrabble play. The OSPD4 is available in bookstores, whereas the OWL2 is only available from the National Scrabble Association's retail website wordgear.com (as of July 2009, NSA membership is no longer required to purchase the OWL).

In all other countries the competition word list is the Tournament and Club Word List (Collins) published in May 2007 (SOWPODS), which lists all words of from 2 to 15 letters and is thus a complete reference. This list contains every word in the OWL2 mentioned above plus words sourced from Chambers and Collins English dictionaries. This book is used to adjudicate at the World Scrabble Championship and all other major international competitions outside of North America.
