THis is a fascinating question – the answer is if you truly want to eat local then of course, your coffee would be out but then for me in the UK, so would a whole heap of fruit & veg – the winter months would consist of yummy things like sprouts, cabbage and a few stored potatoes & onions!
Oh and don't even mention chocolate – cocoa doesn't grow too well here!
If everybody made an effort to eat locally, where practical, that would make a huge difference.

James, I would suspect that “food terminal” in this context means grocery wholesaler or distributor. m3real is saying that the manager of the Kroger can't buy a load of fresh tomatoes from a farmer who shows up at the store's back door and offers them at a good price.

Not sure what a food terminal is, but risking a guess and thinking it's some sort of farmers market? And it's too bad that the over industrialization of food has taken away some of the freedom and autonomy that local grocers had at one point.

It's not about getting stuff from local growers via the food terminal. It's about local stores getting stuff, from smaller operations, that doesn't ever go through the food terminal.

It wasn't that long ago that supermarket managers could accept products from vendors who showed up at the door. Admittedly, not many small farmers would likely turn up at a downtown Loblaws, but enterprising store managers could meet individual customer requests.
It was possible for a supermarket manager to get items that were not listed in the company computer, from vendors that had not paid a listing allowance or rented shelf space, etc.
