Stress nowadays is inevitable. According to a 2018 study conducted by CNN Philippines, things we encounter on a daily basis cause it – bosses, deadlines, schedules, colleagues and traffic. When it becomes chronic, it can affect how you feel emotionally, mentally and physically.

#makeITsafePH: Encouraging Positive Online Behavior

Children nowadays are deeply involved in social media. The rise of the internet has provided them a lot of opportunities for self –expression, content creation, and building communities. However, these opportunities can also expose them to serious threats.

Educating our children to develop a positive online behavior is the best defense for keeping them safe online. It is important to develop their ability to assess the risks associated with their online activities as well as making them accountable for their online behavior.

Good thing, there are companies like Globe Telecom that helps the Philippines in not just making it a digital nation but at the same time, providing awareness on the dangers that people could fall vulnerable to in this digital age.

Globe’s #makeITsafePH campaign, under its Cyber Pinoy cyber wellness program teaches students how to understand the impact of their online behavior and how to be safe and responsible for their online activities by providing workshops. The workshops provides awareness on technology’s impact on their social activities and how to use technology to help them achieve their goals.

To support the #makeITsafePH campaign, here are some tips I made to help your children develop positive online behavior.

1. Always Respect the Rights and Feelings of Others.

Remember the Golden Rule? “Do to others what you would like others do to you” (Luke 6:31). You have to treat others the way you want to be treated. This goes the same in the online world. Just because you are behind the screen doesn’t mean you can do the things that you would not ordinarily do, including antisocial behaviors, negativity and the like.

Be Polite

Always remember to practice politeness in all your communications online. This includes your comments, shares, emails and etc. Make sure you don’t appear rude, insensitive and deceitful.

Be Mindful of your actions.

Make sure what you post online will not embarrass you or other people. Many careless shares have led to a lot of online problems including problems with relationships.

Practice Self-Control

Think before posting or replying in social media. Communicate clearly and don’t post anything in sheer anger or frustration. Refrain from complaining online. Steer away any communication that harbor bullying, abusing or spreading rumors.

2. Protect Your Digital Identity

Having a positive digital identity can work for your advantage. The things that we post today can be an important information in the years down the line. When content that reflects you in the negative light is easily visible in search, your digital identity is at risk. Developing a positive digital identity is like answering the question, “What do you want others to see in you when they search you?”

Your digital identity is based on what information you post and what you share. It can impact your relationships and your future opportunities for employment, careers, and business. Your digital identity might well be the first thing that your prospective employer will check when they get your application. They will be looking for positive content that showcases your potential and accomplishments as an individual. They will also be looking at your photos, videos, and comments that suggests you are the right person for the job you are applying. If your future employers finds out that you are the kind of person who posts rude comments and anything negative online, would they be considering your application for their company?

In order for you to have positive digital identity, you have to be genuine to people in your online community. People respond positively to genuineness. Also, artificial words and actions are very easy to spot, so be true!

3. Delete Inappropriate Posts in the Past.

The moment you post something online it is there forever. Most of the time your long-forgotten posts from the past may work as a disadvantage in your present opportunities. Many people can roam your social media profile looking for something to bully you – or just to stalk on you. That is why, you need to clean your social media accounts to make it scrutiny ready for future opportunities.

Here are some cleaning tips for your social media accounts.

Delete pictures that can be seen as negative or reveal too much.
Delete inappropriate statuses.
Delete friends you don’t know.
Set your privacy setting so that only friends and family can read what you posts
eUntag yourself from inappropriate posts
Report, unfriend and block people who send you abusive posts or messages.

4. THINK Before You Post.

Sharing information online is a good thing but we need to be careful of the risk of hurting ourselves or someone else. The information that you share with your friends can end up being shared with others. Therefore, it is very important to think before you post anything online.

5. Spread LOVE.

One of the best ways to spread love on social media is to make post that will make other people happy. Think of making posts that will inspire or make someone laugh. Post something that is beautiful, something that would bring joy to others.

When it comes to liking posts, be generous with your likes. It doesn’t cost us much when we like other’s posts but think about how it can add up to someone else’s day.

When leaving comments, make sure to write genuine and kind comments. If you don’t have nothing nice to say, better not comment at all. Write comments that will inspire and encourage.

There are probably so many things you can do to spread love online. All you need to do is to start now. Be a blessing!

5 Tips on How to Buy Your First Guitar

One of the things that I bought from my first ever salary was a guitar. I wanted to learn and master my guitar skills so I bought one. Buying my first guitar was not easy because I don’t have any idea on what are the things that I need to consider. My husband who is so fond with guitars helped me picked the right one.

Here are a few tips:

1. Get an inexpensive guitar.

Why inexpensive? This is because you are still using the guitar as your learning guitar. Do not immediately buy signature series guitar especially if you don't have enough money to buy one. Try to find guitars that are affordable and easy in your pocket. Mine was around $100 or around Php 4,000 and I find it great for my guitar lessons. Just make sure that you don't end up with guitars that are poorly constructed as it will have poor sound quality.

2. Acoustic or Electric?

You Need to Decide! Most beginners find it difficult to choose whether to buy an acoustic or an electric guitar. It simply depends on the style you play. In my case, I bought an acoustic guitar so I will not be buying an amplifier as my budget is limited. However, if money won’t be problem you can buy an electric guitar and an amplifier at one time.

3. Play and Feel the Guitar.

My husband was the one who helped me test the guitar before buying it. Since he is familiar with guitars, he can easily detect poor tone qualities, tune problems and many others. You too can tag along your friends and relatives who knows how to play the guitar so they can help you. Also, try playing the guitar if it’s comfortable in your hands and body.

4. Warranties are Important! Always ask for a warranty in buying your guitar.It assures you that the guitar you buy is of good quality and don’t contain manufacturing defects. It also gives you the right to ask the manufacturer to deal with any issues according to their terms and conditions.

5. Enjoy the Freebies. Some guitars that are sold in music shops comes with a gig bag and a tuner. If ever a music shop provides you with one, go for it.

Time Please is spearheaded by Globe and The Walt Disney Company Philippines. This collaboration encourages and empowers Filipinos to provide volunteer activities or participate in existing volunteer programs in groups with two to four members.

From July 10, 2018 to August 19, 2018, members of groups who will complete and register their volunteer hours through http://timeplease.ph will get 100 Globe Rewards points each. The group with the most number of volunteer hour credits at the end of the program will win an all-expense paid trip for four to Hong Kong Disneyland.

“We want to encourage more Filipinos to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism through Time Please. Losing a Loved One

Losing a loved one is no easy feat. When you're used to having someone in your life for years, it's hard to figure out how to manage life without them. Grief can be a potentially all-consuming process that happens in stages. If you have a close friend who is going through the grieving process, you might be at a loss regarding how to support them. Understand that while there is only so much you can do, there are still ways to show you care.

1. Visits
Depending on how close you are to that specific friend, you might want to come to their house, order pizza and sit with them while they cry. Grief is such a terrible feeling and having a comforting loved one around can really help a person get through it. Don't isolate a person who is grieving. That's probably one of the worst things you can do. Instead, always check on them. Don't hover, but make sure they know you're a phone call and a drive away.

2. A Listening Ear
In cases where there's grief, an individual just might need a listening ear. Take your friend to dinner and listen to them vent. Allow them to talk through their feelings and get through the ups and downs of their emotions. In many cases, a listening ear is good enough to help them get some pent-up frustration off of their chest. During the first few months after the loss, your listening ear can do so much to help them. If they decide they want to talk about something else, be the listening ear to go to those other subjects with them.

3. Thoughtful Gifts
Sometimes, it's the thought that counts. Send a gift to let your friend know that you're always thinking of them and that you're hoping for the best in their life as they traverse this new path. Send a Starbucks gift card so that they can indulge in their favorite coffee drink. If they love snacks, send over a few candy gift baskets along with a few great movies. Whenever they get down, they can enjoy a movie marathon and sweet treats to go with it.

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to be invited at the Live Brighter Forum by Sunlife at Mallberry Suits Hotel in Limketkai, Cagayan de Oro. The forum was about financial literacy which serves an an eye opener for everyone who were there.

My personal learning during the forum is on how I can prepare my financial future especially that I am not getting any younger.

Here are 3 things I’ve learned from the forum:

1. Savings.

I do save. I have savings in the bank and I also have small time savings at home which are kept in my “piggy banks”. To me, the ultimate goal of saving is to reach financial freedom where you no longer need to work to live comfortably or worry about money. However, if I will only rely on the monthly income that I get from my teaching job, then I guess financial independence would be impossible.

At the Live Brighter forum, I have learned that Sunlife Financial helps people grow their money, giving people a sense of security. The life will be easier and stress-free because you don’t have to worry about money and the things that money can buy.

2. SMART goals for Saving.

#makeITsafePH: Protect Your Teen from Cyberbullying

Teenagers today enjoy sharing photos online, communicating with friends through Messenger, emails, chat rooms and social media. This may seem fun as this gives them the opportunity to make friends online, but the downside of this is Cyberbullying ~ a type of bullying that happens online or thru text messages or emails.

Instead of strengthening connections, some teens use social media to harass or humiliate others. Some may send inappropriate messages while others spread rumors or make fun of someone. With the widespread use of internet among teenagers today, we need to make sure they are safe on this kind of online threat.

Here are some tips to help protect your teens against Cyberbullying:

1. Be Kind Online

Your online activity reflects who you are as a person. Always treat others how you want to be treated. Being helpful and kind online is the best way to keep the Internet safe and fun for everybody. If you happened to receive a negative comment respond to it in a positive way.

Always refuse to participate in any negative online behavior. Instead, support campaigns that will help others become responsible online.

As an educator, I am thankful for campaigns like the #makeITsafePH of Globe Telecom, a cybersecurity and cyberwellness campaign to educate consumers about online threats and what they can do to avoid becoming a victim. This campaign includes the Digital Thumbprint Program, a campaign that teaches teens how to understand the impact of their online behavior and how to be safe and responsible for their online activities. Campaigns like this will surely help in spreading kindness online.

2. Think Before You Post

Before you post anything online, think first! The 4 Way Test of the Rotary is a helpful tool for your teens in providing a more sensible post online.

Is it the TRUTH? - If its not true then don’t post it. Never spread it!
Is it FAIR to all concerned? – If your posts is not fair to all and might embarrass someone never post it online.
Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS? – If your post will only ruin friendships never post it. Never share anything that may hurt or embarrass anyone.
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? – Will your post benefit you and the one reading it?

Another thing to remember is, never open unidentified messages. Never click any suspicious links even if they look very interesting.

3. Secure Passwords

Set strong passwords. Never share your passwords to others, not even your bestfriend. It is also important that you log out of your email and social media accounts after using a public computer.

4. Manage Privacy Settings

Privacy settings control who can see your profile and private posts. Restrict your online profile to friends only. Only connect and share with people you know in real life.

5. Monitor Online Activities

Monitor your child’s activities online. Add them as friends on your social media sites. Educate them about what is and what is not okay to do online. Tell them that they can freely share any messages they get online that makes them sad or scared.

Cyberbullying is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. It can lead to psychological implications such as depression and violence and it can also lead to school failure. We need to do something now so that we can protect the younger generation against it.

Licealiz battles head lice infestation in Mindanao with Kilusang Kontra Kuto

About one-third of elementary public school students in the Philippines suffer from head lice-related problems. Head lice infestation or pediculosis can cause severe itchiness and infection of the scalp, but this could be the least of these children’s worries; the social stigma associated with having kuto can leave lasting psychological damage on both children and their parents.

A survey of communities visited by the Licealiz caravan last year found that 47% of respondents from Visayas and 76% of respondents from Mindanao said that their children were bullied and teased for having head lice, causing some of them to miss school to avoid their peers. The parents, on the other hand, feel incompetent and embarrassed for being unable to prevent head lice from infesting their children.

In response to this, Lamoiyan Corporation’s Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo launched Nationwide Oplan Alis Kuto as a part of its Kilusang Kontra Kuto effort to educate the public on lice infestation issues. The caravan was launched in partnership with the Department of Education, University of the Philippines Manila College of Public Health and Mommy Bloggers Philippines with the goal of traveling to different schools and barangays all over the country to hold shampooing programs and lectures for students and their parents.

Lamoiyan Corporation is set to end the year with 30 public schools visited and over 8,000 children shampooed.

“We want to remove the stigma associated with having kuto by educating communities on lice infestation issues,” said Lamoiyan Corporation Marketing Director Bing Cavestany.

“We want to drive home the message that everyone can be potentially infested by kuto, that it’s not something to be ashamed about, and definitely not something to ridicule others for. We also hope to encourage these communities to unite and take action to solve this public health problem together,” shared Cavestany.

Licealiz invites everyone to join the Kilusang Kontra Kuto in changing the public’s perception about head lice infestation and spreading correct information regarding head lice prevention and treatment.

Whenever I have the need to study my lessons, I always think of a peaceful place where I can study all I want without being disturbed by other people. I can always study in my office or at home, but oftentimes I easily get distracted with other things and I end up doing other things instead.

Last Saturday, I had the chance to have a sneak peek of the new Librewry Cafe. It’s a cozy place to study, read, and at the same time relax because the place is so peaceful. It actually has a school library environment.

What is good about the place is that it is open 24 hours, equipped with CCTV and a security guard. Moreover, they are serving a variety of food selection in case you get hungry while studying.

The New Librewry Cafe is situated at the 2nd Floor of Papsy’s BBQ (formerly Cagayan Educational Supply) along Pabayo Sts. The cafe’s new location provides everyone the opportunity to read good books and relax in a cozy place for only Php20 an hour.

Mantianak Botanical Garden and Ecological Zoo

Mantianak Botanical Garden and Ecological Zoo is an eco-tourism site located at Sugbongcogon, Misamis Oriental which would take 1.5 hours travel time from Cagayan de Oro City.

I have already heard about this place every time I got a chance to visit my grandmother in Medina but I was not interested at first because of its name. I felt like it’s a creepy place and my mind was already set to a ‘Tianak’, a vampire Philippine methodology creature that imitates the form of a child and once it is picked up by the victim, it reverts to its true form and attacks the victim. True enough, the name of the park was named after the town’s name Mantianak as the place was rumored to be a place of Tianaks.

Does the name scares you already? It’s not actually what you think it is.

Mantianak Park is a nice place for relaxation as well as for educational tours. Children will surely enjoy the encounter of different kinds of animals particularly birds, tigers, rabbits and many others.

The bird feeding at the park was one of the highlights during our visit. You can buy bird's food (corn seed) at the shop for only 5 pesos.

We were the only visitors at the park during our visit that is why the doves were so eager to get a single grain of corn seed. My cousin Zane was a little bit scared because she might get skin cuts from the dove's claws.

Aside from doves, birds of different species were present. There were blue birds similar to that of Rio Movie and a lot talking birds which will surprise visitors and calls them "Pangit". If the birds are in a good mood, they will call all visitors Gwapa, Gwapo... sometimes they will ask.. "Ayo! Naay tao?" (Anybody there?)

As visitors paved through this pathway, they will experience different kinds of animals. Below are some of the photos of the animals you will find in this park.

The tigers looked very calm but don't get near them as they will surely grab you.

I was so happy that I captured this peacock opening its wings while we were there.

There were ostriches too! However, they all look a bit malnourished.

There's also a crocodile in the park. Although it wasn't moving it is still very scary to look at. There were also snakes, goats, turkey, monkeys, wild pig and etc.

There were also lots of rabbits in the place. My cousin took her time playing with these little creatures.

Mantianak Zoo is managed by the Municipality of Sugbongcogon. If you plan to visit this place kindly take note of the entrance fees, for adults is Php 100 and children is Php 50. Discounts are given for educational tour purposes.

Bigby's Cagayan de Oro has always been a part of my list when it comes to delicious food and great dining experience. Bigby's will be celebrating its 18th year anniversary tomorrow and I was reminded to share some food photos I got from dining at Bigby's.

During family dinners we always start our meal with this creamy soup. (I forgot the name of this soup).

The CDO Sinuglaw is one of my favorite dish at Bigbys. I like the fresh spicy fish with a twist of bulinaw or dilis.

I forgot the name of this vegetable salad but this is one yummy dish.

The Rack-A-Bye Baby Back Ribs is my all time favorite at Bigbys. I am not so sure if the Solo Rack-A-Bye Baby Back Ribs is still available on Bigby's menu but this one is so affordable.

In celebration of its 18th Anniversary, Bigby's will be having a Super 18th Anniversary Buffet tomorrow, December 8, 2016 at Bigby's Centrio. See you there!
