There is a zoo there, but it's nicer to see the incredibly well-fed squirrels that are around the park and to have soup from a cardboard bowl at the boat-house.Instead I had business meeting that took me to other parts of the city. I can definitely recommend Soho, go and pretend you have enough money to buy some of the art work, and go around the art galleries there. Fantastic exhibitions, better art work than I have seen in any other art galleries for years - and all for free! It's also worth just going to the Upper East Side and walking around. There is some amazing architecture and you can see how many of the houses are decorated. Totally gorgeous!I also went to see some of the landmarks from Sex and the City, such as the Magnolia bakery, where they make amazing cupcakes for only $3! Hell's kitchen is also worth a visit as is China town, although it's good to go to the more remote places with someone who knows where they're going.Instead of going to see a musical, it was suggested that we go to see something that the New York locals would see, such as an ice hockey or basketball match, so we did. It was excellent. Some New Yorkers told us to get stuck in and what to shout and when. The atmosphere was electric, the game was pretty tense and violent! I was so pleased we hadn't just gone to watch another musical.Make sure you make the most of New York being a 24 hour city. Go out to dinner at 11pm and then watch a movie. If I was to live anywhere other than my current home town, it would be New York, hands down! Friendly people and so much to do. Icarus comes from the original Latin Ikarus. In Greek mythology he is the son of the craftsman Daedalus. Daedalus makes his son Icarus wings from wax and feathers and warns him to not fly too near the sun. Icarus ignores his father, flies near the sun and causes the wax to melt, the result being that he falls into the sea and drowns.This may make it a strange name for a planet, however it seems others had a similar idea. Three space-flight projects have been named Icarus. It would seem that the name is synonymous with:ideas of flightheightsnarcissismand an obsession with fire and water.Icarus being so entwined with these characteristics has even led to a mental condition being named The Icarus Complex for people suffering from the above traits. True friends are always there, whereas some friends are what I'd describe as 'seasonal' - they're there when you're up for having fun, but you don't hear from them when you're down.We enjoy the same things - be it music, literature, movies or activities.We don't need a reason to contact one another - a text message about something stupid that we think the other person would find amusing is totally normal.Shared experiences. These come from being friends with someone for a long time, and help to build a strong friendship.Loyalty and honesty. For example, when I was thinking of sharing a house with a (good) mutual friend and two girls I didn't really know, my best friend told me I was making a mistake, because despite knowing how desperate I was to move out of where I was living at the time, she knew I would hate living with these people. She knew it wasn't what I wanted to hear, but she told me anyway, and I really respect her for doing so.Feeling comfortable with organising a spontaneous meet-up. For example, being able to call someone and ask if they want to come over and hang out right then, because you're bored and fancy some company. You can do this with your real friends, but with "sort-of" friends, it's a bit awkward.Knowing you'll both help each other out in a crisis, if it comes down to it. I left my wallet at my boyfriend's once, and my friend paid for my taxi, gave me some money, and then we spent several hours studying over a bottle of wine.  She knew I'd pay her back, and she knew I'd do the same for her. I think that kind of trust is really important in a friendship.Being completely comfortable with them turning up at my house when my hair's a mess and I'm wearing some strange combination of clothes (huge hoodie and pajama-shorts spring to mind!)Every friendship is different, but for me, all the best ones feature the best qualities. Why? It's got to be for the incredible synchronicity that comes with owning two Apple products.The MacBook AirI bought a MacBook after becoming sick of unreliable computers, laptops and netbooks that never seemed to last more than 18 months before dying on me (worst was a netbook that lasted 3 months before giving up the ghost). The Macbook Air is tiny, lightweight and seems so far to be far more durable than any other computer I've had. I take it absolutely everywhere with me - to work, to class, and even into town, just in case I have a spare half-hour to get some writing done in a coffee-shop somewhere.I've got the 11" model, and it's so light that I often have to double-check my bag just to make sure I haven't left it at home! It's incredibly fast, innovative, and looks gorgeous. I love the light-up keyboard in particular!The iPhoneI had a Samsung Galaxy SII for about 18 months, and I loved it. I recommended it to everyone I knew. However, when I dropped and smashed it, I had to quickly decide what to do for a new phone. I'd heard that you could sync things easily between a Mac and an iPhone, and after discussing this with various people in the Apple store and reading up online, I decided to go with the iPhone 4S. I got it free on contract, and it was stolen 2 weeks later, but this is a testament to how much I loved it - I went out and paid full-price for another handset, just because it was so incredibly useful to have a MacBook and an iPhone that without it, I felt anxious and lost. My Favourite Things About Owning Both an iPhone and a MacBook AirSynchronised calendars, without having to do anything. If I put, say, a haircut into my phone calendar while I'm arranging it, I know it'll have popped up on my MacBook calendar by the time I'm home. It's helped me to be so much more organised!Applications. I use Wunderlist as a to-do list on both my phone and my computer, and again, they sync up. For example, if I write a shopping list on my Mac and then go into town, I can check off each item as I buy it. Photo-stream and iCloud. These features were great when my phone was stolen, as I managed to get back nearly all the photos I'd taken on vacation - when my phone was connected via WiFi, it uploaded the pictures to my photo-stream, which sent them to my MacBook.The "Where's My iPhone?" App - Now, if I'd known about this when my phone was stolen, I'd have probably got it back. Hindsight is a wonderful thing! However, I've now got it - it's free, by the way - and I can use it to track the location of both my MacBook and my iPhone. I'll quite often use this just for my own amusement (I don't really know what's amusing about it, but that's not the point!) and I've also used it when I thought I left my phone in Starbucks (it wouldn't be the first time). The app showed me that my phone was in my house somewhere, which stopped me panicking, at least!The camera on the iPhone is fantastic. I've got a good digital camera, but I don't bother taking it anywhere with me nowadays - my phone's just as good, and I always have it on me. It's one less thing to carry, too!If I'm only leaving the house for an hour or so, I'll just take my phone - it does almost everything that my MacBook does, but it's just smaller. The internet is extremely fast, and having Spotify on my iPhone means I don't have to fill it up with music, or carry my iPod as well. I used to hate Apple products on principle - I thought they were overpriced fashion accessories - but I'm a total convert now, and I'd never buy anything else, despite the price! I would recommend getting them insured, though. Gadget cover is indispensable if you're even slightly clumsy, and it's worth it for peace of mind. Both languages contain words derived from Latin, but although these words look similar on paper, they are usually pronounced completely differently!What Is The Best Way To Learn French?The most effective way to learn to speak French - or any other language - is to spend time among native speakers. It might not be possible for you to spend a long time on vacation in France, and moving there just to learn the language seems a bit extreme, but there might be a local group or class that you could join. You could also search for French people giving one-on-one lessons in your area.My ExperienceWhen I moved to France, I couldn't speak French - despite reading those 'learn French' books and listening to interactive cassettes designed to teach you French (I think the Michel Thomas ones were what I used). I thought this would be enough to get me through, but on my first day in a French school I found myself completely lost - not only did the French find it difficult to understand me, but I couldn't understand them. It seemed like their speech was speeded up, and the regional (Normandy) accent made it near impossible for me to understand anything.After three months or so, during which time I was constantly in situations where I had no choice but to get by, I suddenly realised how much of the language I'd picked up. I could hold a conversation, understand the slang, and explain myself - at least on a basic level. After that, it just got easier and easier. What I'd SuggestGet a basic guide to learning French - whether that be a book, a website or an app - just to help you understand how the language is different from English. I'd personally go with something in audio format, as it'll teach you (at least roughly) how things are pronounced.Watch French TV aimed at children. I was thirteen, and was watching cartoons aimed at really young kids. This actually helped a great deal. Watching the same episodes over and over until I knew what was going on was really useful, although getting used to the squeaky voices of cartoon characters was a bit of a problem at first!Watch dubbed versions of shows you already watch in English. I remember watching House and CSI on French TV, and as I already knew what happened in House, it was easy to match the language to the visuals. It also helped me understand how French people speak - the speed, the intonations, and the accents. It's a bit weird hearing a different voice coming out of Hugh Laurie's mouth, though!Watch DVDs in French with English subtitles. I've been back in England for over four years now, and had barely spoken any French during that time. I started watching Spiral, a French crime drama, on TV, and although I had to rely on subtitles for the first episode, by the third or fourth I didn't need to read them at all.See if you can find a native French person to converse with - a relatively new thing is French 'classes' held on Skype, so you can see, speak and type to the other person. Some of these people will charge, whereas others might just want to improve their English!I think what I'm getting at is that conversing in French is the best way to learn, but listening to the language is second-best. I'm sure there are now apps available that show you the written words and play you a clip of how they sound when spoken (they certainly have apps like this for learning German, although when I tried one of those, it was more irritating than helpful!).See what works for you - personally, I wouldn't bother with the books unless you want to know the very basics such as "bonjour" and "J'ai vingt ans". Textbook French vs 'Real' FrenchThe other thing to keep in mind is that French people don't actually speak like this - it's so formal, and I think quite a lot of these books are very outdated. For example, the textbooks will usually say something like "comment allez-vous?" for "How are you doing?" whereas, in France, they're far more likely to use the colloquial (and not grammatically correct) "Tu vas bien?" or "Ca va, toi?"Hope that's of some use to you - obviously, everybody learns differently, and you might be more of a visual learner than me. My "camera roll" contains pictures of my daughter's birth, and it also has  video footage of people looting the shop underneath our house during the 2011 London Riots.I use my iPhone to download tickets for events, and I use it to access information about everything I've ever wanted to know.Losing my iPhoneNothing crystallizes how you feel about something more than when you come close to losing it. The FAO (Food and Agricultural Organisation)  predict that by 2025, 1.9 billion people will be living in regions of the planet with absolute water scarcity.It's also though that an increasing number of people in the developing and developed world will find themselves suffering from water stress.This seems like a crazy situation to be in, especially considering 72% of the earth's surface is water. However, of that 72% - only 0.036% of that is located in rivers and lakes (where we can get to it). The rest of the freshwater on this planet is locked up in glaciers, or located deep underground.Finding a way of desalinating the oceans would:Increase the amount of potable water available for human consumptionMake farming livestock and crops cheaper, reducing the cost of food (and thus helping fight malnutrition around the world)Minimizing territorial disputes and wars that center around control of water resources.Encourage and aide biodiversity on the entire planet.Why has no-one thought of this before?They have. Seawater desalination programs already exist, with the world's largest operations located in Australia and Dubai.However, the current process requires a considerable amount of energy, making it expensive and inefficient.If I could invent a way to remove salt from water in a more energy-efficient and cost-effective manner, then that would help sidestep the major hurdle holding us back from rolling the project out on a global scale.Thinking about it now, this may hinge on the invention of a more sustainable and cheaper-to-access energy source than we already rely on - because energy is the main cost-driver in the desalination process.Perhaps unlocking the secrets of nuclear fission and harnessing atomic energy more efficiently would be a better answer to this question! For the first time in the history of mankind there could be true freedom of movement, as long as a network of these machines was created. Cars and aircraft are two of the planet's biggest polluters. Teleportation machines would render these obsolete, which would be a huge environmental boost for our planet. Trade and business would be completely transformed by the invention of a teleportation device. No longer would the ocean be dotted with huge oil tankers and cargo ships. Instead, the everyday commodities we enjoy could simply be teleported into our homes! Nike released only 1,500 pairs of these 'glow in the dark" sneakers in 2011, for auction on eBay. All profits from the auction were to go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for research into Parkinson's disease - presumably because Michael J Fox suffers from the illness himself. He wore the shoes when he played Marty McFly in the time-travel film, as you can see in this clip:My son works in a local sneaker store, where all the staff are obsessed with sneakers, especially Nikes - and so, when they heard about the limited edition release, their boss decided to try to buy some of the Nike Mags in the auction. When he succeeded in obtaining a pair, the guys then built an installation, inspired by the movie, in the shop. It attracts attention every day, both in the shop, and online - and loads of articles have been written about it. I guess it could be any smart phone. I used to have a Blackberry and resisted changing to an Iphone as I originally thought that they were a fashion item and didn't see the value in them. So much so, I have an Ipad mini too, just so I don't get eye-strain from looking at the smaller screen.The normal day to day uses are:Making 'phone callsTexting (definitely do this more than speaking on the 'phone)Using FacebookUsing Twitter-has saved me about £10 a month in magazine costsSetting alarmsDiarising and arranging meetingsChecking my bank balanceSurfing the internetWatching You Tube clipsYou might think this doesn't make it very special. However the other features that really add to my quality of life are:The camera - Having a great resolution camera on me 24/7 has meant that I can capture moments that otherwise would have just been an anecdote with no imagery. I've captured sunsets, sunrises, my cat pulling silly poses, people in awful outfits and even a butterfly hatching out of a chrysalis! Often, my friends and I say 'picture or it didn't happen', so the camera-phone is now a part of everyday life and I'm sure most of us take it for granted. I took this one on a spring day out in Norfolk, so it's nice to have this as a permanent reminder of a lovely day.Google Maps - I definitely need a portable map. My sense of direction is terrible, and on a recent trip to New York, all I did was to get my phone out, input where I needed to go, and off I went. You can even look on street view so you know what the building looks like that you're going to. Imagine the time this has saved me! Other apps such as the London Underground Tube map are awesome for the same reason. I always used to get on one going the wrong way! Google maps also has a great turn-by-turn sat nav and the ability to locate friends, which I've found useful when friends have visited my city and can't describe where they are. I find them on Latitude and get directions to them! I find the Iphone very easy to use, although a little bit too easy to damage. I haven't tried any other smart phones to give a fair comparison. My cell phone is literally my personal organiser. I would be lost without it! I find that even the non-premium account still provides users with a host of cool features (such as traffic stats broken down by demographic or geolocation). It even has its own built-in spam filter!WordPress also gets bonus points because so many "serious" blogs are published on the platform. Everyone from CNN to Flickr communicate via WordPress blogs, adding an extra dimension of trustworthiness or credibility to the platform, which is something I think other blog platforms struggle with.What's so great about Blogger?There are two things that really attract me to Blogger - both of them are related to the fact that it is owned and operated by Google.Firstly, you can go from setting up your blog through to publishing your first post in under 15 minutes. Thus the subsequent investigation has to be shared between the two countries.The programme is utterly absorbing, with fantastic, subtle performances by all the main characters, and it's also gorgeous to look at (even by the very high standards of most Scandinavian crime series).However, the best thing about The Bridge is one of its two main characters, the Swedish police investigator, Saga Noren, who is unrecognisable from the actress who plays her (Sofie Helin), so convincing is her portrayal of a woman with Aspergers syndrome. The Bridge pulled off a remarkable feat: It made people watching it totally engrossed in the story, but also managed to make them laugh out loud - at Saga's complete inability to interact with colleagues and the public in accordance with societal norms. if this makes Saga sound as if she's a merely a copy of Lisbeth Salander (from Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy), that's misleading, as she isn't. Saga isn't overtly tortured with angst like Salander, she's just very different from the norm... And all the more appealing for that.The Killing (Forbrydelsen) This series is where the U.K.'s passion for Scandinavian crime drama began, turning us away from American crime series, and into obsessive fans of what has now become known as "Scandinoir".Sweden has a long history of excellent police procedurals, anyway, starting with the fantastic Martin Beck series of novels (by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo), which almost every current crime writer cites as inspiration. However, watching Forbrydelsen on television offered the added benefit of visual imagery, showing us Scandinavia as we'd never seen it before. (It also showed us why the Scandinavians are so famous for interior design, as did the other Scandi TV hits which followed in its wake, but that's another story).The Killing had great scripts, subtle but utterly-convincing performances and - for the first time that I can recall in a crime series - it showed the aftermath of a crime from the perspective of the victim's loved ones, which made it incredibly moving, too. The main character, police inspector Sarah Lund (played by Sofie Grabol), is complex, sometimes difficult to like, and - as is common with police officers in crime drama - she's totally committed to her work, to the exclusion of almost everything else.I hated the U.S. Version of The Killing, though, so don't recommend that at all, and also felt that the second series of Forbrydelsen was poorer than series one and three.Wallander (The Swedish version, made by Yellow Bird)I'm a big fan of Henning Mankell's Wallander novels, but hate the British television series based on them, which starred Kenneth Branagh in the leading role. However, the original Swedish TV versions, starring Krister Eriksson as Kurt Wallander, are absolutely brilliant.The production values are really high, as the first three films were made to be shown in cinemas, and this quality was retained throughout all the subsequent films which were made directly for TV. Yellow Bird, the production company which made all the Swedish Wallander films, was founded by Mankell himself, and this may go some way to explaining how well the company adapted all his crime novels. (They were also involved in the production of the U.K. versions, starring Kenneth Branagh, however - which were nothing like as good.)As usual with Scandinavian crime dramas, the programmes are stunning in terms of their visual imagery, and the performances are all very convincing. Eriksson's Wallander is a masterpiece of understated acting, too - unlike the U.K. version.  (Kenneth Branagh over-acted the tortured aspect of the character so much that it almost became funny, presumably by accident).I should mention that some earlier TV versions of some of Mankell's novels were also made, this time starring Rolf Lassgard as Kurt Wallander - and, although purists argue which of Lassgard or Eriksson's portrayals are the best, I'd pick Eriksson every time. His Wallander is easier to empathise with, and it's altogether a more subtle performance than Rolf Lassgard's.Borgen Borgen is another Scandinavian drama that's a huge favourite of mine - right up there with The Bridge and The Killing - though it isn't a crime drama, for a change. The two series of Borgen (so far) were produced by the same production company which produced The Killing, and share that show's high production values.Borgen tells the story of Birgitte Nyborg, who ends up as Prime Minister of Denmark, pretty much by accident - and who then has to juggle an unpredictable set of coalition partners and members of her own party (sound familiar?), along with the requirements of being a wife and mother. Birgitte is incredibly charismatic, as are the other main characters - and the insights into how little power politicians really have in practice, and the way that events are portrayed by the media and spin doctors are highly realistic. Even friends who claim not to be interested in politics (which is always a mystery to me) became hooked on the drama of Borgen. Spiral (Engrenages)Now we leave Scandinavia and travel to Paris, France - for Engrenages, or Spiral, as it's known in the U.K.This series, like Borgen, moves beyond the confines of the police station and into the world of politics and the judiciary, focusing on a team of police officers, some lawyers, and a judge.The main character, Capitaine Laure Berthaud, played by Caroline Proust, has the usual dysfunctional personal relationships (apart from with her team) and is overwhelmingly committed to her work - but the series is far more compelling and unusual than that fairly-typical description makes it sound.The intricacies of the French judicial system, the ways in which this can handicap police, and the look at the wider social situation in France are all fascinating, and the performances of all the actors playing the main characters are really strong. Inspector Montalbano (Il Commissario Montalbano)If you feel like some light relief, after all the highly-realistic and often dark series mentioned above, then it's time for Inspector Montalbano, which is based on Andrea Camilleri's best-selling series of novels featuring the same character. Funnily enough, this series was shot in conjunction with Swedish television, so it does still have a link to Scandinoir, though that's not obvious in anything other than the visual beauty of this series. Inspector Montalbano, played by the rather gorgeous Luca Zingaretti,  is often intolerant, always obsessed with food, and wearily realistic about the challenges of policing while trying to contend with the influence of the Sicilian Mafia. Most of the show is filmed in the stunningly beautiful province of Ragusa, and the series is worth watching for the locations alone - as well as for all the beautiful people who appear in it. It can also be extremely funny. This is shame, both because it has a really lovely atmosphere, and also because of its amazing Gothic revival architecture. Norwich is spoilt for choice when it comes to interesting architecture, though - as, since some unsympathetic development in the '60s and '70s, there has been a concerted attempt by the local authority to protect and restore the old buildings, and to prevent further inappropriate building.The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (SCVA)Another of my favourite places to visit in Norwich is the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, at the University of East Anglia. Designed by the architect, Norman Foster, the SCVA is an gallery, providing a permanent home for the remarkable Sainsbury art collection, and also hosting a wide variety of touring exhibitions. It also has a very stylish cafe, fabulous shop, a nuclear bunker underneath it, and a great view over UEA lake.Apart from the two destinations above, there are lots of other interesting buildings in Norwich. Other great locations to visit in Norwich.The Norman castle is obviously worth a visit, as is the Assembly Rooms (below), which has been described as "one of the most glorious examples of Georgian architecture".It almost burned down in a fire in the 1990s, but has since been lovingly restored, although - sadly - its cinema, known as "the Noverre" no longer exists.There are hidden gems all around Norwich, many tucked away in tiny mediaeval courtyards, as well as in more obvious locations such as Elm Hill (now lacking its elm, since Dutch Elm Disease took its toll in the late 1970s).Some of the more interesting buildings are still more than tourist destinations, too, such as the Great Hospital, which has been in continuous use for over 750 years, and still serves as sheltered housing for the citizens of Norwich. It is laid out like a monastery, around one of the smallest cloisters in England, and must be a rather nice place to end your days! Just like gambling, many people pay in, one person takes the money.As there is so much fraud, the insurance companies then need to employ more staff to investigate claims - end result, of course, those buying insurance have to bear that cost too!The second inefficiency is that the whole idea of insurance is based entirely on fear; fear of what might happen, fear that you will suddenly have to spend lots of money unexpectedly, even though in many cases the one outlay of money would be cheaper.In many people's opinion, the whole insurance industry is built on conning people, kind of like paying the lunch time bullies to stop the pocket money bullies stealing your money-the lesser of two evils. Thus, there is no true feeling of lasting value in this product.When does insurance work?I believe holiday insurance works really well. You pay for the period you want to be covered for and based on current health, where you are going and what activities you'll be doing there. It is not based on:Did you ever claim before?Which airline are you flying with?Which hotel are you staying at?How long have you had a passport for?Our car and house insurance is as they have to be so guarded against fraudulent claims, they have to base it on so much more information. If this can be revolutionized I would be very impressed, operating this as another tax might really be the only way of addressing the issue fairly and without allowing big insurance companies to charge more than necessary. As I drive the same route regularly, I have figured out some ways to make the journey faster.My main tip is to be really aware. Always pay attention to the car in front, but what else is going on? Are there cars coming from the other direction trying to turn in front of your lane. If so, I would let them turn, as their lane of traffic might be blocking traffic further down. Or is the bus in front about to stop shortly? If so; don't bother trying to get past them sooner, and make sure that you can get past at that point. I have been on 50 mgs of meth for pain and wanted to try and get off of them to see what my pain level is. HUGE MISTAKE! I waited 10 hours when I woke at 7am I did not take my meth, took a sub strip instead, 10 min later I felt like acid was poured on my body it was a painful coolness all over my body. Vomiting , chills , running to the bathroom every 5 min for 6 hours along with a horrible adrenalin rush.... I did not research because I did not think meth was a opiate...I medicated myself with Valium , Percocet and 50 mgs of meth... I went a bit overboard it was 6 hours after the withdrawals began but it did help... It's about 15 hours later and I feel much better now. I did not want to go to the Er or call my dr. I have a very very high tolerance for Meds ever since I was a young adult and had to take them for sever pain due to a horrible accident. It will be a horrible 24 hours if you do not have anything to counteract it.. As for subs I will never touch those things again . I was on heroin for 4 years 15 years clean off thar and this withdrawal made my detox days in the late 90s a cake walk....
