LapSec (Laptop Securer)

Lapsec pretends to become a solution able to harden a Windows operating system in a very easy way, automating tasks that in other way could become complex and difficult for an administrator or an user worried about computer security.

Objective

Every time a Windows system is installed in a laptop the same changes should be done (specially useful for laptops) to try to keep the system a bit more secure. The idea is from Sergio de los Santos, the scripting is from Marcin "Icewall" Noga and the design is form Alberto García.

It is not a complex program but we believe it is very useful. We are grateful to receive bugs and suggestions at lapsec@hispasec.com. The main idea is to check if the system is hardened or needs to be hardened. You have to tick what it has to be hardened and at the same time what is hardened will be ticked.
To harden a laptop, probably the most efficient way is using TrueCrypt on a system partition. This program tries to help where using TrueCrypt is not possible.

Quickstart

The program tries to be as simple as possible. There is only one screen and two options to choose. "Am I secure?" allows checking which of the options that the program checks are active in the running system. It will tick the running ones. "Secure me" applies the checked changes to the system.

The user can freely choose which of the listed options wants to apply on the system and which ones does not, just checking and unchecking the desired ones. Once having chosen the wanted ones, the user can press "Secure me!" button to apply the changes. Be aware that the unchecked ones will be rolled back. As an example, if the option "Remove LM cipher for passwords" has not been checked and we press "Secure me!", this option will be rolled back so instead of been disabled it will be enabled.

To know about the options that the system has enabled, press the "am I secure?" button that will display the options enabled in the system.
It is important to run the program with system adminitrator privileges or an account belonging to administrators group.

How to check security on the system (Am I secure?)

Pressing this option, the modifications that are already applied on the system will be ticked.
This is a query only option.
If pressing this button, and the "Deactivate hibernation" feature is checked, it will mean that hibernate option is already deactivated in the system.
If this option is pressed, and "Cipher My documents" is ticked, It will mean that "my documents" is already ciphered.

How to harden the operative system (Secure me!)

Pressing this option, the ticked options will be applied and the ones that are not will be rolled back.

If you tick "Remove LM cipher for passwords" and you uncheck "Check password complexity", when clicking "Secure me!" the system will disable LM cypher on password storing and will stop checking password complexity.
If "Install / Uninstall context menu wiper" is checked and "Cypher My Documents" is unchecked, when clicking "Secure me!" the system will uninstall secdel, safe removing form context menu and also will decrypt "My documents" folder.

Folder ciphering and certificate backup

Not only "My Documents" but LapSec also allows ciphering with EFS any folder chosen by the user in an easy way. It is important to be aware that because of EFS limitations system files or windows folder can not be ciphered. WE RECOMMEND CIPHERING ONLY USER DATA FOLDERS.
If, by any reason, after ciphering a folder the user is removed from the system ,DATA WILL BE UNACCESIBLE even creating an user with the same username. It is mandatory a backup of the data that is going to be cyphered.
To avoid this situation, it is mandatory as well exporting the certificate and storing in a safe place.
Certificate can only be saved once a folder has been ciphered.

Secure delete

Secure delete system may be installed or uninstalled through this option. To use it, you will only need to right click over the file you want to remove and select "secdel" option. The file will be removed in a permanent way.

Warnings

We recommend reading carefully the following instructions before doing any action that is potentially dangerous.

System malfunction
The program allows erasing files in a permanent way. If it is not used correctly it may cause a system malfunction.

Not fully hardning the system

Lapsec is not designed to fully harden a system. It tries to add another layer more over the continius hardering task. For example, as an additional measures besides LapSec, it is a requisite to use an account not belonging to administrators group, keep the system and the software on it up to date, etc

Losing data

An user could lose system information when using LapSec due to chyper techniques used and strong file erasing. If an user misuses of this software and does not follow the directions given, could lose sensitive information.

Options
The program allows automatically and with only one mouse click:

Remove LM cypher

When login in into a Windows system, the given password must be stored into somewhere to be know by the system and access be granted or denied. Storing the password in plain text is a bad security policy because anyone with access to the drive could steal it. What is stored in fact is a hash, a password signature created by an algorithm that is applied when the password is passed. This creates an unique hash that only matches with that password. In Windows systems this hash is stored into the SAM (Security Account Manager) file for local passwords and in the ntds.dit file at the domain controller for users that validate their account against domain controllers. LM cypher that is still enabled by default in Windows XP systems is a high risk security problem.

Remove pagefile.sys when computer is shut down

Pagefile.sys is the file used by Windows to store information about RAM swaping. It is possible that sensitive information is stored in pagefile.sys during the usage of the OS and programs. This option makes this file been overwritten before the system shut down, making this information unavailable.

Remove username display when you are going to login
This could allow an attacker to obtain sensitive information that could be used to login easier.

Activate screensaver password

This option enables the password protection when screensaver is enabled. When the operating system goes to inactivity a password protected screensaver will be activated so an attacker could not log in to an inactive session.

Removes autorun in usb, cd, etc...

This option disables autorun feature when plugging in an external hardware so an attacker can not execute code against the system when an external drive is plugged via USB ports or optical units (cd-rom, DVD,...)

User's password is present

The program checks if a password for the user exists. This option is read-only in LapSec.

Check password complexity

Windows comes with a policy to check password complexity. When this policy is enabled it does not allow using passwords containing only letters and numbers. The policy will ask for a password of more than 6 characters and characters belonging to at least three of the following groups: numbers, especial characters, uppercase and lowercase characters. Besides, password can not contain part of the username.

Install / Uninstall context menu wiper

When checked, the availability for secure deleting is added, overwriting data under DOD 5220.20-M security standard.

Password in recovery console

The policy "Recovery console policy: allowing administrative session autologin" is a security issue and should not be activated. It allows access to recovery console without providing local administration password.
Disable password caching in Internet Explorer
Passwords will never be stored at the browser by default.

Disable hibernation (hibernation.sys)

Hibernation.sys is a physical copy of RAM. This file could hold sensitive information stored during program and system use. Checking this deactivates this feature.

Disable administrator and guest user accounts

The OS allows using many accounts that belong to administrators group, all of them with the same privileges. However, an administrator and guests account always exists on the system by default. This could allow an attacker to obtain sensitive information. Checking this deactivates this accounts.
Cipher "my documents" folder

EFS is a transparent cypher system for Windows that can only be used under NTFS. In XP and Vista, through file or folder properties, you can gain access to a menu where you can specify which folder or disk will be used to host ciphered files (everything that is stored on it will be cyphered) or you can specify to cypher only one file (not recommended). It is also possible to use cipher.exe for this task. Once selected a drive or folder as ciphered, everything stored on it will be cyphered but NOT what was previously stored. The user will not have to worry about anything from now on. Every time the user logs in data will be there able to be manipulated but once he logs out or if other user logs in, data will be presented as unable to be accessed even if the files are explored from any other operative system. EFS is based in a public and private criptography mixing. It creates digital certificates for the user that are used to encrypt and decrypt using public and private keys. It also uses symmetric keys to make the process faster.

In fact, EFS uses one unique key per file to encrypt and decrypt. This key (FEK or File Encryption Key) is generated when a file is cyphered and is stored with it. This FEK is at the same time ciphered with the users's public key. Both public and private keys are generated transparently for the user the first time a file is ciphered. They are stored as a certificate in the certificate repository accessible from certmgr.msc or "content" menu inside "options" from internet explorer. The program will cipher all "My documents" folder with one click.

Automatic certificate export

It is mandatory exporting and creating a backup of this certificates if they are used for file encrypting. This certificates are linked with the user SID so if the user is removed form the system or the system brokes down data will be lost. It does not matter if a new user with the same username is created, the SID will not be the same. To prevent this, best option is exporting and creating a backup of the certificates (private key included) With this files, even if the user is removed or the system is broken down, certificates could be imported as data recovery agents in another windows system and from there, decrypt lost data. In a domain infraestructure, domain administrators will be data recovery agents. The program allow to exports the certificates so data ciphered with EFS should not be lost.

Today I’ve been trying out the new Android FroYo OS, and guess what? It’s delicious. Almost as tasty as an Apple, in fact. Standout features of the new Google Mobile OS include a much faster web browser with support for Flash 10.1, performance enhancements, and an beefed-up Android Market.

As you’ll see from the video below this post, Android 2.2 makes some significant changes over the previous version. But don’t just take Google’s word for it. Why not try out the new operating system yourself on your PC? All you need to do is download the Android SDK and follow this process:

Unzip the downloaded file and launch the SDK Setup executable. Highlight the Available Packages option in the left-hand column and expand the list within Sties, Packages and Archives. Check the option to install SDK Platform Android 2.2, API 8, revision 1. Now click Install Selected.
After the package has finished downloading, go to the Virtual Devices option and click on the New button. Enter a name for your virtual device and choose the Android 2.2 package from the Target drop-down list. Now click on the Create AVD button.
Your new virtual Android device, running 2.2 will be now shown in the main Virtual Devices panel. Highlight it, and click on Start to launch the new operating system in emulation mode.
It might take a few minutes to start the virtual device, but it’s worth the wait. You’ll get to try out the new helper, which explains how to get around the OS; take a peek at the new Car Mode; integrate your own email using the new Exchange settings, and even try and access Flash content in the web browser.

Not all of the new features of Android 2.2 can be tested, of course. You won’t get an idea of the speed of the new browser, for instance; and the Market isn’t accessible through the virtual device. However, it’s worth checking out while we wait to see the OS actually running on a device.

Both PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 include a wide range of effects from reflections, photo frames to rounded edges that you may apply with a single click.

Once the effect is applied, right click the edited picture and choose "Save As Picture". PowerPoint will ignore all other objects that may be on the slide and will save just that edited image for you to use it at other places.

I ’m a big fan of online translators, not only because I’m interested in languages in general, but also because they make my work and blogging easier every day. Google Translator has been sitting on my Bookmarks Toolbar for a long time, as it is the translating service I use more often. However I recently found out that Microsoft’s Bing has launched its own translating tool, so I decided to give it a go. You have to try things before judging them, don’t you?

The first obvious difference between Google and Bing is precisely their translating powers: while the first supports more than 50 different languages, the latter features only 20. But the truth is that when Google Translator was launched it didn’t support that many languages either, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bing Translator adding more languages in the future.

One thing I love about Google Translator is its ability to detect source language automatically, so I don’t have to select it every time I use it. Luckily Bing Translator offers the same functionality. Also, besides direct translations, both Google and Bing offer some extra tools, such as a widget to offer a translated version of your website (both), a special utility to perform translated searches (Google only) or a translating bot to assist you in multi-language chats (Bing only).

Now, what about translations themselves? Honestly, I didn’t find much differences between them in my tests. I tried several language combinations with Spanish, English, German and Italian, using different texts and swapping the source and target languages in order to test the translating engines. The results were surprisingly similar, in both ways: when Google Translator obtains a good translation, so does Bing; and when Bing produces a completely absurd text, Google doesn’t succeed either.

Oddly enough, both seem to be better at translating into English: as soon as you pick another target language, results are a bit distorted. Both are also equally fast: you hardly have to wait for more than 5 seconds to have your text translated. The only difference I noticed, if any, is that Bing seems to be slightly better at certain expressions, providing you with the correct translation instead of a meaningless word-by-word equivalent.

Generally speaking though, both Google and Bing feature similarly powerful translating engines. So if you work with different languages on a daily basis and need to do frequent translations, I’d suggest you take advantage of both of them!

Found a new post of Bing search engine about Visual search on Delicious.com , i'm trying to searching on Flock browser it's seem good .I close the Flock browser and open Internet Explorer 8 for another search but Bing visual search don't running when i search with IE8 browser.

(My computer already installed Silverlight ).

I don't know how it was ,like a funny thing Bing hate IE ! ( my computer/ WindowsXP ).

It's certainly very cool. In many ways it is a better desktop than the one that comes with Windows (even Windows 7) or OS X. But as cool as it is, it feels like a toy. That's because the locus of modern personal computing is not the desktop. People live in apps and in the browser.

BumpTop makes the desktop better, but so what? It won't make you more productive in your e-mail app, and it currently doesn't touch the Web browsing experience. BumpTop doesn't go deep enough into Windows to replace the way we work with information. Instead, it adds yet another interface to use in addition to the Windows utilities (like the file manager), your apps, and your Web browser.

Meantime, BumpTop is worth a try. It's a lot of fun.

BumpTop replaces your desktop with a visual environment unlike any you've used. It's a bit like a futuristic gesture-based interface, but it's tied to your mouse. Were it capable of simultaneous Web browsing, its utility would be much more apparent.

Icons and folders are assigned a virtual weight based on the amount of memory they take up and their importance to you. You can move them by click-and-drag, or fling them across the BumpTop space. There's a built-in photo viewer, and although it doesn't allow for user interactions yet, the Safari and Chrome browsing engine WebKit is baked in, too.

If WebKit moves toward integrating browsing with your desktop in a customizable manner, and more gesture-based hardware support becomes commonplace, it could push how we use our computers into a whole new dimension.

A single sign-on widget called Jadoos

The Single-sign-on idea makes sense: giving users a way to log in to all the sites they use without having to have a different set of IDs and passwords for each. Since many Web users are busy and easily distracted by everything going on in our lives, only having to remember a single ID and password would be immensely valuable.

A new company called Jadoos presented ( at Demo 09 ) its approach to single sign-on, albeit one that is scaled down to apply to a discrete set of Web sites. But that approach, using a sort of "remote control" to handle log-ins for a series of sites strikes me as valuable, especially for heavy social network users.

Jadoos' service--which is currently in a closed beta period--is a widget that floats above the desktop on users' computers. It looks suspiciously like an iPhone, but gives users a simple and even elegant way to log in to the many sites they use, all with that single sign-on. It works, as I surmised from the company's demo, by having users add any sites they want to their account, entering their IDs and passwords, and then allowing those users to simply click on the site's icon on the widget and choose to log in.

The widget also provides access to a range of instant message clients, and allows users to manage their contact lists without having to run another piece of software, be it something like Trillian or IM services' own clients. As an adjunct to easy sign-on to various sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and so forth, it's a nice combination and a spare approach to handling the kinds of applications that heavy Internet users keep running in many different windows at all times.

It also offers a search window, and terms entered there run Google searches that then appear in a browser window.

The Jadoos widget adds one more feature, a rating system for Web sites and businesses. This could be valuable, but feels like a little bit of overkill. This, like the ratings system unveiled at Demo 09 by Purewire, will only be useful if a critical mass of people participate.

But what is not overkill is Jadoos' decision to open up its platform to outside developers. That means its widget--designed to look like an iPhone--could begin to also resemble that device in terms of the many kinds of third-party apps that sit on top of it. Again, until the apps are created, there's no way to know how interesting they'll be, but it is a promising idea.

System Startup affects the way your PC will boot. In order to gain time and boot faster you need to optimize, sort and manage startup items. On a regular basis, it is recommended to boot with a small number of applications that “eat” all resources and decrease the amount of memory left for the operating system’s components to load, and in this regard there are solutions to optimize the loading process.

You can create some sort of order for the applications to start (leave the ones that require more memory at the end of the list so that OS components would load first), apply delay time between loading applications, or just use the smallest, easiest startup manager you can find and remove or disable unwanted startup entries.

The latter solution is easy to apply but not so effective, because we often need certain applications to start with Windows (antivirus – which takes a big bite out of the system’s memory, firewall, or any other security-related programs) and others to launch with a delay. This kind of programs will make the difference, when it comes to system startup.

The WhatInStartup application was designed to be a small, easy-to-use startup manager that would help the user disable, enable or remove startup entries. From the get go I must mention that the review was made for the initial release (1.00) of the software, so it is still a work in progress.

WhatInStartup is free of charge and requires from Windows 2000 up to Windows 7 operating systems to work. It does not install or add any registry entries to Windows, and all you have to do is extract the files and run the application. It can also be copied to portable drives and run from there. All the modifications that are made will be stored in a configuration file within the root directory.

I can say that I was pleased to notice that WhatInStartup lists all the startup entries instantly, when you first run it (I found other startup managers that were a little slow with the indexing process). The main window will display a list with the available items. Column Settings will let you choose what columns you would like to appear in the main window. Select all of them and you will have a report about every item.

For each entry you can select to view the name, type (Machine or User Run), command line (the process runs with command line parameters, e.g. -hide, -autorun), disabled (status: yes / no), product name. The following five columns provide user information about file version, product description (as mentioned by manufacturer), company, location (and this is very important because you can see the actual registry key location) and product path.

There is much information about the entries, so WhatInStartup also provides an HTML and text report summary for all or each item separately. The first test that I did was using Winamp, which adds an entry to the startup list. WhatInStartup will allow you to create a system tray icon so that any modifications to startup can be indexed. After installing Winamp, with WhatInStartup running in system tray, the entry did not appear in the main list.

After a quick refresh (use the Refresh button) the entry was added to the list. I think that a small adjustment would help a lot – to let the user set up some sort of refresh time for new entries to be indexed. Instant refresh would be even better.

The developer talks about “a special Permanent Disabling feature” (see product page) that is implemented in Permanent Disable Mode, found in the Options tab menu. It refers to the applications that you disabled and which will try to create startup entries again.

The test that I did to prove that this feature works involved disabling Winamp from WhatInStartup. All changes that are made will take effect after system reboot. Although the Winamp Agent entry was still in the list of startup items found by msconfig command (Start>Run>msconfig), the Winamp tray icon did not appear after reboot.

The User Interface offers you the possibility to choose the startup scheme from Advanced Options. This is very useful when you have multiple OSes installed and you want to load other startup list than the one in C:\Windows.

The Good

The application provides a simple but efficient way to enable, disable or remove startup entries in order to optimize system boot time. All information about the items can be summarized in an HTML or text report. WhatInStartup does not require any installation so you can run it from portable drives too. The Permanent Disabling feature and its implementation are something I found only in WhatInStartup.

The Bad

Unlike the msconfig command (Start>Run>msconfig), WhatInStartup will not show startup services too. The User Interface needs a few adjustments to look more attractive, even if you run the application on XP.

The Truth

WhatInStartup is a simple, easy-to-use tool that can help you view information about startup entries, create a summary report, enable, disable, and keep applications disabled, or remove entries.

To gain more time in system boot you can use three general schemes: apply a delay after each component, create boot order, or remove unwanted applications that require a lot of memory from startup. WhatInStartup provides only the last scheme. It would be a plus to find one more.
