Recently; I've found myself in a "fair and stupid" dilemma... I wanted to change my gmail address.

The deal was simple.. I need a new; not so offending username for my gmail account as mine is pretty obscene.

Back on the days that gmail was available only by invitation i had made an account and honestly don't remember why I errased it... Nevertheless, I had tested how good was the spam killer and filters big G implemented on their new free email product first hand; so I decided to create a new account specially for web business, warez forums and porn sites logins.

back on those days this social web shit didn't exist; and I couln't figure out that people from my job will be linking who was the motherfucker behind the gmail account.

Anyhow, with buzz, facebook, twitter and other stuff that i had logged in to test (using the gmail account in question) i've made some friends and shit... to find out that everybody knows who i am; and if they doesn't...t hey are still able to see my email address if they were smart enough... so I NEED A NICER GMAIL ADDRESS.

anyways.... google doesn't let you do that.

why?

what the hell will I know.

I've tested removing gmail account from my google account... making my old and nicer hotmail account as the default for adsense and the other buch of crap I'm hooked in with google, to find out i can't really create a new gmail account and hook it to the gmail profile but the already existant/ just deleted gmail account.

The only real thing you can do is use your hotmail or whatever alternate email you have for your google account (in case you are deleting the old one) and create a new gmail address on a separate google account; wich means sending emails to everybody on the social networks scheme about you been a jackass and request their aproval for buzz and others.

I can get the point of ... we are picky about usernames and if you already have one you are fucked but isn't this kinda stupid?

the real solution; if you really want to change your gmail address is to make another one...and set the old one to forward everything to the new one + setting a reply to address and shit like that....

there is no posible way to link one google account to another and you'll be doom to have 2 google accounts, one "dormant" an the other one active.

Using blogger new "Template Designer"

It is pretty obvious that this is a blogger blog with a custom domain name; and since the beginning I've tried to make a kick ass design; which made me think several times to make the blogger to wordpress transition since it is sort off easier to design websites on wordpress.

Well.. I'm still using blogger and got rid of all my template tweeks. Too bad as I had to read way too much crap to know what I was doing.

Now, blogger has introduce a new designer thing... I checked it out... and in less than 5 minutes I pimped my blog. Way to go google!

Now... my overall design has the header over the blog part at the same level of the sidebars... and i meant to keep that; but it has been impossible to get the transparency of the image shown... Minor thing but it's looking pretty damn nice!

Slackware 13.1 on the asus laptop (eee 1005HA)

I've been using this little machine as my main system for the last couple of days since one of my hard drives died... well it was recoverable with zerofill / dban but why bother? The hard drive still under warranty.

back to Slackware 13.1 released on may 24th; it is not really a breakthrough but an update to the legendary linux distribution. The upgrade from 12.1 to 13 was the biggest change just by taking into consideration that since then, Slackware Linux support officially amd64 processors.

Anyways, i wanted to write about my experience with Slackware and the little netbook that could. This machine lack the horsepower but has enough capabilities to print out a nice smile on my face; and Slackware 13.1 has improved the performance in comparison with winXP or kubuntu; wich is amazing.

Installing:

Installation is sort of easy once you know what you are doing. Slackware sine i don't know when let you do a network install. A boot ISO image for usb pen drive can be used to install from samba shared server over the network. Alien bob has provided with version 13.1 a fancy bash script that create a us installer with the whole Slackware tree.

Running:

Once installed... there is literally nothing to do. xorg pulls hardware data directly from HAL. This little machine has an intel graphics card which has been a topic of discussion for long time on linux forums... since slack 13.. no issues. The native driver on the vanilla kernel let me run fancy desktop effects on kde with no issues on an external monitor.. (slow when plugged on a full HD one since graphics memory is shared)

ACPI works fine on the system with no extra packages needed. I get a little more over 6 hours out of a single charge 100% of the time hocked to a wireless network, BUT some functions keys do not work. I'm trying to figure out how to enable fn+f3 for example (that disable the touchpad) to type with no issues...

this is a configuration issue on the acpi deamon that i haven't figured out how to enable... other than that.... everything works.

I've came with a silly and elegant solution to disable the touchpad as in using Fn+F3 key combo. Synaptic touchpad is recognized by default and after some research I've found that you can disable the touchpad using synclient

"synclient -l" will how the settings running. To disable it we want the parameter TouchpadOff to be equal to "1"; achievable by the following shell script:

STATE=$(synclient -l | grep TouchpadOff | awk '{ print $3 }')

# change to other state
if [ $STATE = 0 ]; then

Some time ago, asus invented the netbook.

Great idea.
From a strictly engineering point of view it was brilliant. A cheap machine designed to do the job; and that's it. I don't know what is the idea behind it; but lets face it. If it get broken... you buy a new one in a new york day... maybe swap the hdd if you are lazy enough to customize it again....

Cheap, portable ... whatever a salesman will tell you to convince you; true.

But as many other people around the world... I don't need one.
I have a full blown desktop that i build myself. Quad core processor, 8GB of ram and two overcompensating full HD monitors to watch movies and play videogames.

Anyhow... I got me this week a nice looking asus Eee (model 1005ha)
it last 8.5 to 9 hours on a full charge (nice!) and performance wise... perfect.

Live Butterfly Gardens

Ok... time to blog.

I live in panama city, Republic of Panama; where we have abundance of butterflies. In fact, panama, in some native Indian dialect means that; abundance of butterflies and fish.

Since I was born here; i honestly don't give a damned; but you know... webbing around while killing some time in the office (like you don't do it) I've found out that some people take the time to grow butterflies...

I've seen people grow iguanas, fishes, frogs... turtles and bugs; and in fact (thanks to the silence of the lambs) I know people collect butterflies; but never heard of growing them.

They even sell butterfly gardens kits with alive caterpillars that they mail out. NICE

I wonder... why there is always a "kit"?

anyways... I found interesting that it was such a popular hobby... not only collecting the butterflies; but grow them from caterpillars.
So inmediatly and without thinking my business mind came along...

What kind of butterflies caterpillars can I find in my sunny, humid and beautiful Panamanian rain forests?
I can make a fortune if I were hunting such a thing...

This is a big huge thing.
One of the things I've learn while reading about butterfly gardens is that you actually need to handpick the plants and flowers you'll grow up, so they will get enough nectar and hang around your place... So the whole idea of getting these kits is actually to grow up the caterpillars and deal with your butterflies pets.

umm...

Maybe I've never tough about it because I'm a lucky bastard who actually is annoyed by all the butterflies that hangs around my place with no invitation.

so.. why do I care to about such a thing?

Ok people...
I've been spending time into thinking what to do about this specific topic for bloggindabullshit.

One of my co-workers happens to be a good graphic designer who offered to make up my blog in change of some other knowledge... wich I accepoted.

so.. yes, soon I'll have a fancy unique design (not that mine isn't unique or cool enough) and since I own my domain..

however... there is nothing I've found that wordpress do that blogger doesn't offer me at the moment.

In fact; blogger give me the option of forgetting about webhosting and stuff... becuse it is owned by google... and let's face it.

Automatic Gate Openers

This time I'll like to talk out about something that I've found annoying.
I live in a small apartment here in Panama city; and somehow the automatic gate opener of the building started to fail.

Since I am poor.... I don't have a scanner to check if the clicker was doing it's job or not... so I did what anybody without my electronics engineering training will do in this kind of situation; talk to his neighbors.

Well... to make something long and boring short; happens to be that nobody notice the faulty automatic gate opener here.... except for one other soul that complained about it; but let me be a little more explicative around here.

Building administrator is a moron who doesn't do shit.
Neighbors usually get their asses in their apartments and talk to nobody... There is only a few who actually invite you to their place to drink a couple of beers and watch a ball game....

and the self call "President" of the co-owners board is a moron who only knows the administrator phone number to any issue the building has... (in other words... you talk to him and he refer you to the administrator like if this moron will do something)

so...

i did some research and called the company who installed the automatic gate opener....happens to be that the guy installed an Italian equipment (why it always have to be Italian?) and yes... the receptor was faulty; but my clicker was running out of batteries too.

I asked for a spare clicker... and the guy said it worth 79 bucks.
WTF?

this italian piece of shit worth 79 bucks... (I googled the PIC and yes... it worth 40 euro.. in italia!!)

what a great business... a programmable 433 MHz transceiver that cost less than 20 bucks to produce..

Facebook is a good idea... (maybe that's why people use it and bla bl abla) but here are some facts from a user standing point... ME

1.every single time I open the page; I see a gazillion bullshit applications with no other possible mean of existence than piss me off. I mean.. who cares of what color is my aura... what Sheldon Copper says (this one just copy/paste dialogs from the big bang theory)

2.People posting bullshit on their status...

well... this is pretty much all my complains about it. I check my facebook profile from time to time; look at the girls pictures the guys send me... you know

Since I've been in my coffee dosage; I had some loco ideas for a couple of movies... LOL
I've done some observations; and apparently, every 30 minutes some dude gets out of the closet.

So I've came with the idea of a spreading infection...
Bacteria usually have a 30 minutes period between every new generation; and then... what if the whole gay thing is a disease?? a spreading infection?

So, a macho-like hero scientist discover "the cure", and a whole controversy about the cure came along...

Worried parents where giving shots to their baby boys; you know, just in case... and of course as any other vaccine, the cure is actually a weaken version of the actual virus... and in some weird cases it actually infect the host instead of build antibodies.
Then, the defense about the "failures" on "the cure" is that some people posses a genetic predisposition ... so the whole picture is building up in my mind..
I have a hero for the movie; a funny yet controversial topic...
So, at this point I made whatever any other person will do... go to google and see if there is some text regarding a gay virus.

And oddly; I found that an expert in population biology, Gregory Cochran, said something about a gay gene... a lot of bullshit of course .... so we have a lot to develop here; then i found something about a gay virus, named P3N15 virus... nothing real... nothing scientifically speaking; just a bunch of crap... so yes we may have a possible blockbuster hit here.

back to the whole idea...

I'm imagining some biological attacks with this new discovered gay virus.... LOL
Places like Afghanistan where the macho arabs get "gay up" before marines lands.... and the gay arabs attacks them with gay attitudes pissing of the army...

Apparently I've become addicted to coffee.

I work on a small office where everybody puts a little money asides to buy snacks for the team. (7 people atm)

so... payday kinda away; the coffee got delayed this week because the guys didn't had any change...
and I got sleepy at 8 or 9 pm so by the time the tv news were ending I was tucking myself.

And I'm awake as usual reading like gazillion of things while listening to music and stuff then... .bam

I start writting.

So I have a bunch of jokes/books ideas that I think I'll start soon (if the coffee rush keep kicking in) and ofcourse... post.

Slackware 13 setup

Ok..

tonight is one of these days I say to myself... time to blog

and what else to blog about than the amazing slackware linux...

Since the "official announcement" of slackware going 64 bits; and me braking my old mobo installed slackware64 current on my pc... It just worked like a charm besides the little customer things... like me not liking KDE4 and stuff..

Last week slackware team made the official release of version 13 stable... so ofcourse I went to slackwarestore in a honest attempt to buy a DVD... then saw like... ok it worth 50 bucks...

... not that i don't feel like it doesn't worth the 50 bucks but... (i'm short lately) i got myself a nice black tshirt and started downloading.

This time I made a CLEAN install wiping out all my HDD's and installed everything...

so here i go with my "setting up slackware" guide.

Optimizing LILO

Slackware still use lilo... why?
simple... IT WORKS!

by using the old known linux loader you are loading a basic system that then has to load all your crap... no need for extra parameters... and let's face it; configuring lilo is way simpler than GRUB.

Just add compact to the top of your lilo.conf

Optimizing rc.M

There are parts of this script that doesn't need to be loadead every single boot.
I personally comment outthe fc-cache and ldconfig lines. One only needs to be run after installing a new font, the other after installing a new library.

Note: I use to do this since i had old and slow hardware.. but with my shiny new build with 8 GB of ram... i don't notice the extra processes

Setting up ALSA

Back on those days that I went from redhad (yes... I sometimes feel bad because now I know rpm based system sucks) this one was one of those tricks you feel good when find out.

alsaconf
             /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa start
             alsamixer
             alsactl store

Make sure you do the last one... because it will save the settings... otherwise you'll have to run alsamixer to be able to hear something thru your speakers every single time.

Setting up X

Ok... this one i wasn't going to post about; but since amd took the time to release a driver that WORKS (even if they drop support for linux for many old but still rocking cards with the release of their crappy 9.3 catalyst) the actual ones works pretty well.

since i build this machine I started to miss my nvidia 6300 256ram... I feel nvidia drivers for linux are superior but hey... amd did something good...
they don't send you a pre-compiled module anymore.. they send you sources so their ati-installer actually compile the kernel module...

every single time the fucking module didn't load and you startx... it halted the system bad...

Configure the system to boot into X

The only real advantage that I see on this one is having your wife not bitching arround... ok that wasn't the real one.
The real one is that by enabling booting into X you are able to shutdown the machine logged as a mere user...

Edit “/etc/inittab” and change the default runlevel from 3 to 4.

Windows Emulation

This one is an important one because lately i've been playing starcraft again.. (starcraft2 is comming out next year and i want to rock on that one)
anyways... if you are not willing; or just don't want to install windows on a Vbox or something...

Install wine (duh!)
run the winecfg
Enable support for misc binaries:

edit “/etc/rc.d/rc.modules” and uncomment the following line:/sbin/modprobe binfmt_misc

Then add the following to “/etc/fstab”:

none /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc binfmt_misc defaults 0 0

Now add the following to “/etc/rc.rc.local”:

echo               ':windows:M::MZ::/path/to/wine:' >               /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc/register
             echo ':windowsPE:M::PE::/path/to/wine:' >               /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc/register

From now on; every *.exe file will be executed by wine...
I think it needs to be rebooted to work... don't remember....

I forgot to write about this.. but here I go

I have a 98 honda legend (acura legend)... nice car... with only 70000km on it... bought it cheap from previous owner bl abl abla...

one day i found out it was flat...
and as usual with second handed cars... tools are there; but not necesary functional... the jack didn't have the operator level..

fuck it... i'll get an hydro jack since i'll spend some cash on it.

so i went to doit center store... and got me a nice 3tons botle hydro jack... that DIDN'T FIT under my car...

since i have another car i said to myself...ok i'll keep this one and buy a 2 tons jack (little bit smaller) that will work and no problem..

the 2 tons jack didn't raise the car far enough for the tire to come off...

after all.. I ended buying a sealent spray and paying more to the tire shop because the sealant and shit..

Slackware64 with KDE3.5

Hello folks.

I have to apologize because lately I've been with no feeling at all to sit and write something on this blog... Anyways here I go.

Since KDE folks released kde4; several people had the reaction because let's face it... WE DON'T LIKE IT.
keeping that aside, "The Man" announced the official support for amd64 arch... wich is great based on the fact that pretty much everyone has a 64 bit processor (and if not i'm selling a Athlon 7750 BE cheap)

Now; Slackware64 current has kde 4.2 or something.... i tryed to adapt to it and... no go.... so i started to read a bunch of forums and shit... and several people is thinking the same... slack64 with kde3.5.10 ...

I don't know you; but i successfully installed kde3.5.10 (from slackware 12.2) packages on my slackware64 current installation with no troubles....
I test that on a couple of virtual machines and went for my system... so for all you guys at the forums... i dunno why you are making such a noise since it is not rocket science

there has been some time since last post (or at least since last real one) but latelly I've been consumed by household shores among other things (playing nintendo, driving the bike, scuba diving etc etc)

basically I'm living my live.

Today I'm taking the time to write while the gutemprint driver get's installed on my compuer (installing stuff the old way takes some time)
I have a new CISS (continous ink supply system) that i bough relativelly cheap on ebay and now i can fill it up with 1 epson cartrige... (I mean, what a single cartrige of ink worth buys enough ink to fill the danmed CISS)
