Yahoo Meme will do anything to expand: Launches Indonesian Version

Get Twitter and Yahoo to cross and you will have Yahoo Meme. Alright that was quite pervert of me but Yahoo continues to expand its product. It earlier launched the Spanish and Portuguese version of the platform and today it went a step ahead with the release of the Indonesian version [Bahasa]. The winning aspect of Yahoo here is that it expands the character limit to 2,000 while that of Twitter is a mere 140 characters. But is this character issue something to make a service actually stand against Twitter? I don’t think so, maybe there is a lot that needs to be done to make Yahoo Meme rise higher otherwise it may do great in a few regions but fail when it comes to the globe.

Zembly falls in Darkness as Sun Microsystems pulls the plug

The bold vision of Sun Microsystems all of a sudden just lost it all and therefore the sun will set on it. I am talking about Zembly; the project it launched a year or two back and was set to provide an app development platform that would help bring forward innovative ideas. But I guess those were just boastful words and it failed the expectations big time and users have been notified that it will suspending the service on November 30th. Well, luckily I am not sad since I was never a part of it or got carried away by all the air Sun gave to it. This adds another to the Web-cemetery.

While free is definitely a winner on the Web, but if you grow up and have quite some following, you are bound to put a price. Especially if you are providing the best or one of the best service, users wont mind paying a few bucks. Babbel today released version 2.0 of its translation service and language learning platform and is available in major languages including, English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. The bad part, it will now be abandoning its freemium model and only the first part of each course will be available for free while full access would cost $6.65 and $11.95 a month.

Well I agree that many users wont like the idea of the paid model. But you can’t really blame Babbel and others who charge you for providing licensed works.

What Is Phishing And How To Avoid Online Scams

Have you ever been the victim of a scam? It happens to the best of us, and these scams are all over the Internet. I've been seeing a lot more in my email than in recent years, so I thought I'd take a few minutes to talk about online scams and people phishing for passwords.

What is Phishing?
Phishing is trying to obtain otherwise guarded information about accounts from someone by fraudulent or deceptive means. Typically, you'll get an email claiming to be from your bank, PayPal, Facebook, etc., asking you to log in to perform some action. Usually, that action is said to be critical to keep your account open or help with a security audit, etc. Once you've fallen for the bait, the scammer either uses your online account in nefarious ways or gains access to your finances and drains you of all that pesky money you had. Either way, these guys have plenty of tricks.

Phishing examples
I get a lot of this kind of thing, so here's some examples to help you recognize these emails:

The Lottery
I actually won several things online before I ever got one of these. When I got my first one, I was excited, but then I thought, "I never entered any Australian lottery". I discarded it as a scam and have since seen the same thing ove and over. If I got $100 for every one of these I've received, I wouldn't need to win. This is a pretty simple scam to get you to part with some private information that they can then either sell or use to open accounts in your name.

The link goes to http://phce.org/westpac/index.html, NOT any bank. In this case, it looks like phce.org was hacked and aren't aware of it yet. I'm emailing them.

How to protect yourself

Type it yourself – Always type the site URL into the browser yourself before logging in. Most of these scams prompt you to click a link to log in or confirm information. Some are crafty and make the URL look pretty close to the URL you would expect for the site you think you're logging into, but many times, you end up at a .cn or .ru domain or some other variant.
Look for your name – Almost always, the phishing email doesn't have your name at the top but instead has something like "Dear member". Most of the large social sites and banks will greet you by name in an email. No name = probable scam
Don't Click! – I know it was the first rule, but it's also the third because it's THAT important. Never click or open anything in an email you aren't 100% sure about.
Keep private info private – This goes beyond just email. Never give out private information like your home address, phone number, birth date, and social security number in a communication exchange you didn't initiate.
You didn't win – There's a reason you don't remember entering that Euro Lottery you just won 143 million euro in... You didn't enter. They just want your information to try and steal your identity.
Report abuse – Help out the rest of the Internet and forward these emails to the appropriate people. Many sites will have special emails for this. For example, phishing emails that target your PayPal account should get forwarded to spoof@paypal.com. Find out the right address and help stop the scammers.

Sprint to layoff around 2,500 by years’ end to save some cash

The bruises and scars of the recession are going to take a lot of time to heal and while it heals, it will give more wounds to many. Today Sprint announced that it will be be saving around $350 Million in the fourth quarter and to achieve this it will be be laying off employees. The number of these layoffs will be between 2,000 to 2,500 and this round of layoffs will be completed by December 31 this year. The mobile carrier has already shut down 27 call centers given a phenomenal fall in call volume. Sad for the employees, especially those who will end a year with a layoff. Hope the new year brings glad tidings for them.

If a new app is not made available at the App Store, I can gulp it down and say it just didn’t get green. But a seasoned and a very popular one that has been around for quite some time vanishes, it looks odd. The TweetDeck app has seen the same, and has vanished from the scene after being around for quite some as the Twitter client on the iPhone. The reason? Appears it wasn’t bug free and caused a whole of crash and burn to have Apple pull it out. Though the bug free version has been submitted, but as it is with Apple, it wont rush with things and take all time to ensure it is bug free. I hope the update is out soon enough for the TweetDeck fans.

By the way if it doesn’t, why don’t you all just discard the iPhone and make another investment with the HTC? Just a thought.

I dislike it when companies change names every now and then. Why? Are they superstitious that a particular name is cursed or something? DotBlu made me ask all this, once again, as it has done so for the third time all the way from BlueBet to DotBlu and now to TownHog. What’s interesting here is that the service had given up on all hopes and was confirmed dead last month but not anymore as it rises from the dead branded as TownHog. The working changes as it make a shift from being a betting platform. TownHog works simply as it features a deal in almost every city on a daily basis and you can recruit buyers from numerous social networks like Facebook and Twitter or even using the email. Sounds fun enough and we hope that this is the last time it goes about changing the name or ending up in a grave.

Top 10 Php/Mysql code security tips

1. Do not trust user input

If you are expecting an integer call intval() (or use cast) or if you don't expect a username to have a dash (-) in it,
check it with strstr() and prompt the user that this username is not valid.

Here is an example:

PHP Code:

$post_id = intval($_GET['post_id']);
mysql_query("SELECT * FROM post WHERE id = $post_id");

Now $post_id will be an integer for sure

2. Validate user input on the server side

If you are validating user input with JavaScript, be sure to do it on the server side too, because for bypassing your
JavaScript validation a user just needs to turn their JavaScript off.
JavaScript validation is only good to reduce the server load.

3. Do not use user input directly in your SQL queries

Use mysql_real_escape_string() to escape the user input.
PHP.net recommends this function: (well a little different)

PHP Code:

function escape($values) {
if(is_array($values)) {
$values = array_map(array(&$this, 'escape'), $values);
} else {
/* Quote if not integer */
if ( !is_numeric($values) || $values{0} == '0' ) {

Then you can use it like this:

4. In your SQL queries don't put integers in quotes

For example $id is suppose to be an integer:

$id = mysql_real_escape_string($id); // 0; DELETE FROM users - mysql_real_escape_string doesn't escape ;
mysql_query("SELECT * FROM users WHERE id='$id'");
Note that, using intval() would fix the problem here.

5. When uploading files, validate the file mime type

If you are expecting images, make sure the file you are receiving is an image or it might be a PHP script that can run
on your server and does whatever damage you can imagine.

One quick way is to check the file extension:

$valid_extensions = array('jpg', 'gif', 'png'); // ...

$file_name = basename($_FILES['userfile']['name']);
$_file_name = explode('.', $file_name);
$ext = $_file_name[ count($_file_name) - 1 ];

6. Give your database users just enough permissions

If a database user is never going to drop tables, then when creating that user don't give it drop table permissions,
normally just SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, INSERT should be enough.

7. Do not allow hosts other than localhost to connect to your database

If you need to, add only that particular host or IP as necessary but never, ever let everyone connect to your database server.

8. Your library file extensions should be PHP

.inc files will be written to the browser just like text files (unless your server is setup to interpret them as PHP scripts),
users will be able to see your messy code (kidding) and possibly find exploits or see your passwords etc.
Have extensions like config.inc.php or have a .htaccess file in your extension (templates, libs etc.) folders with this one line:

9. Have register globals off or define your variables first

PHP Code:
if( user_logged_in() ) {
$auth = true;
}

if( $auth ) {
/* Do some admin stuff */
}

If you have registered globals on and you can't turn it off for some reason you can fix these issues by defining your variables first:

$auth = false;
if( user_logged_in() ) {
$auth = true;
}

if( $auth ) {
/* Do some admin stuff */
}
Defining your variables first is a good programming practice that I suggest you follow anyway.

10. Keep PHP itself up to date

Just take a look at www.php.net and see release announcements and note how many security issues they
fix on every release to understand why this is important.

Skype founders, Janus Friis and Niklas Zennström are putting their years of experience to push another startup: Rdio. Rdio is a digital music startup waiting for its launch and has quite a team to make it successful enough; including Carter Adamson the former GM of desktop products at Skype. The startup is still in the shadows and there isn’t much on it. I just hope it is able to perform as impressively as Skype.
