Towards the last years of his life, Joseph Campbell created a three-part documentary series featuring lectures summarizing the wisdom he had gained from his lifelong study of mythology, psychology, philosophy, and religion. This documentary series is entitled Mythos. The Joseph Campbell Foundation recently uploaded the first two volumes of Mythos to their YouTube channel. Each volume consists of 5 hours of lectures by Campbell, accompanied by visuals with introductions and commentary by actress Susan Sarandon. They were released on DVD in 1999 and 2000, but this is the first time that we know of that the Joseph Campbell Foundation is offering them on streaming for free for all the world to see! If you’re at all curious about watching these, we highly encourage you to do so right away because, in all likelihood, they won’t be on YouTube forever (we’ve seen The Joseph Campbell Foundation giveth and taketh away in the past). While the standalone Audible Plus membership that provides unlimited access to over 150,000 audiobooks in their Plus Catalog seems to still exist for existing Audible Plus members at $7.95/month, it seems like they are phasing it out for new members, as I’m not seeing a way to subscribe to it currently.

The new Audible Standard Membership Plan for $8.99/month for one audiobook is definitely enticing for the casual audiobook listener. It’s cheaper than competitor Spotify’s $12.99/month Premium Plan which includes 15 hours of audiobook listening time, but of course doesn’t include ad-free music. Spotify does apparently have a Spotify Audiobooks Access plan for $9.99/month in the USA that gives you access to about 500,000 audiobooks, but excludes ad-free music. And Spotify has about half of the selection of Audible, which now boasts over one million titles! Anyway, lots of options to choose from for audiobook listeners out there.

Below, we’ll list them by university, citing some of the most popular courses from each university on our site. Most of these courses are on YouTube, while some of them are on iTunes, Archive.org, or the university’s website. Browse around and find a course to enjoy!

1. Harvard University – The prestigious Harvard features about 20 courses to choose from including the popular philosophy course Justice: What’s The Right Thing To Do? by Professor Michael Sandel and they’re very popular Introduction to Computer Science course that they’ve been offering for many years.

2. Stanford University – The equally prestigious Stanford offers about 40 courses with a course on iTunes about the Historical Jesus and a video course on Human Behavioral Biology taught by superstar Professor Robert Sapolsky.

3. Yale Open Courses – Ivy league university Yale offers over 40 course from their Open Courses program. You’ll find a great Introduction to Psychology by Professor Paul Bloom and a Financial Markets course taught by Nobel Prize-winning Professor Robert J. Shiller. The lectures are available on YouTube and MP3 audio download via the Yale Open Courses website.

4. MIT OpenCourseWare – The Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers hundreds of courses for free on YouTube and their OpenCourseWare website. While some of them get pretty technical, we tried to add the courses to our site that were most relevant to a wider audience. Take a course on The Human Brain or Listening, Speaking, and Pronunciation for ESL students.

5. Columbia University – Columbia University in New York offers about 10 free course on YouTube. You’ll find two world history course in History of the World to 1500 CE and History of the World Since 1500 CE taught by Professor Richard Bulliet. They also have a course called The Indian & Tibetan River of Buddhism taught by Buddhist author and academic Robert Thurman.

6. webcast.berkeley – University of California, Berkeley was a pioneer in broadcasting free courses on audio & video. In 2017, they removed their course online, but thankfully some of them have popped up on Archive.org and we link to over a dozen of them, including philosophy courses Man, God, and Society in Western Literature and Existentialism in Literature and Film both taught by Professor Hubert L. Dreyfus.

7. UCLA BruinCast – 15 free video courses from the University of California, Los Angeles including a course on Intimate Relationships and a course on Science, Magic, and Religion.

8. Missouri State University – 14 free video courses on YouTube with an Introduction to Philosophy course and a course on literary heroes called
The Heroic Quest.

9. University of Chicago – Six courses on video, including a course on Human Capital taught by Nobel Prize-winning economist Gary Becker.

10. New York University – A dozen courses on video, including an Introduction to Sociology and a course called New York City: A Social History.

11. University of Houston – Over 30 free video courses with a popular course on the Fundamentals of Public Speaking.

12. Virtual University of Pakistan – Over 25 free courses from the Virtual University of Pakistan with a course on
Pakistan Studies.

13. UC San Diego – Over 100 podcasted courses from UC San Diego available on audio. We plan to add even more of these soon.

14. Cal State Dominguez Hills – Over 30 video courses on YouTube from Cal State Dominguez.

15. UC Davis – A dozen free video courses mostly available on YouTube.

16. Indian Institutes of Technology – 10 free video courses, including one on Indian Philosophy.

17. University of Michigan – 20 free video courses from YouTube, iTunes, and Coursera.

18. The Master’s Seminary – Over a dozen free video courses on Christian topics.

19. Middle East Technical University – Seven video courses available from YouTube.

20. La Trobe University – A dozen podcasted audio courses on iTunes, including philosophy courses like The Philosophy of Descartes and The Philosophy of Hume.

21. East Tennessee State University – Eight video courses, including many art history courses taught by Dr. Vida Hull.

Earlier this month, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting shut down after the U.S. federal government cut its funding. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was created under the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 and went on to fund more than 1,500 locally owned public radio and television stations, including PBS and NPR stations. While the future of PBS and its numerous PBS member stations remains to be seen, we thought we’d highlight some of the educational documentaries from PBS that are available on YouTube. For this list, we went through the national PBS YouTube channels like American Experience, American Masters, NOVA, Nature, and the main PBS YouTube channel to pick out full documentaries being offered. We also browsed around the many PBS member station channels that are on YouTube from cities and states across America to find documentaries that might be interesting to a wider audience. Because many of these channels change their offerings frequently on YouTube, we won’t list all the documentaries here that are on our playlist. But we’ll keep adding to our YouTube playlist as new PBS documentaries become available, so bookmark the playlist on YouTube if you want to see updates.

We didn’t include documentaries from the PBS FRONTLINE series as those usually stay up on YouTube and there’s already a good PBS playlist of them with over 300 documentaries available:

Since 2013, the Library of Congress and the WGBH Educational Foundation have created the American Archive of Public Broadcasting. This online digital archive now features over 150,000 works from public television and public radio programs dating from 1940 to the present. You can search, browse, and learn more about the archive at their website: americanarchive.org.

We recently spent a fair amount of time browsing the entire archive of over 150,000 titles and picked out about 60 of their best offerings to add to our LearnOutLoud Free Audio & Video Directory. You can browse what we added here:

Over 50 of the Best Programs from the American Archive of Public Broadcasting

Much of the archive features local public TV and radio programs and dated news programs (like over 16,000 episodes of the PBS NewsHour). So, sifting through it all, we tried to pick out programs that would still be interesting to a wider audience. We selected programs and series featuring authors and thinkers who are still popular today. Most of the titles we selected are on video, while some are public radio programs on audio. One of the best collections from the archive is the Bill Moyers Collection featuring over 800 programs produced by public television giant Bill Moyers (who passed away earlier this year at the age of 91). We’ve selected many titles from that collection. For each title, we’ve embedded their audio/video player so you can play them through our site or click through to the American Archive of Public Broadcasting. So here are the titles that we added in no particular order. We’ll start with the series and collections and move on to the individual programs.

Healing and the Mind with Bill Moyers – We’ve blogged about this 1993 series previously, which is a 5-part documentary on various aspects of the mind-body connection.

Prospects of Mankind – Eleanor Roosevelt’s public TV show from 1959 to 1962 covering global politics.

The Evolution of Jazz – Public radio series from the 1950s covering the history of jazz to that point.

A Word on Words – John Seigenthaler’s author interview show for Nashville Public Television from 1972 through 2013, featuring 900 episodes.

From Socrates to Sartre: A Historical Introduction to Philosophy – History of philosophy public TV show from 1978 with 30 episodes featuring Dr. Thelma Z. Lavine.

Dwight Macdonald on Film – Audio lectures from film critic Dwight Macdonald from 1967.

Self Encounter: A Study in Existentialism – Dr. Hazel E. Barnes leads this course on existential philosophy.

Archaeology and the Bible – Biblical archaeologist Dr. Nelson Glueck leads this course.

Great Ideas – Dr. Mortimer J. Adler discusses the “basic ideas fundamental to man’s everyday life” in 1957.

Six Great Ideas – Dr. Mortimer J. Adler join Bill Moyers in 1982 to discuss Western civilization’s greatest philosophical concepts: truth, beauty, goodness, liberty, equality, and justice.

Bill Moyers Journal – Over 120 episodes of the Bill Moyers Journal.

Genesis: A Living Conversation – 10-hour documentary on Genesis with Bill Moyers.

The Wisdom of Faith with Huston Smith – Religion scholar Huston Smith explores the six major faiths with Bill Moyers in this 5-hour series.
