On the last day of the Shatana Workshop, Mark Salvatus (Manila) and myself (Cairo) agreed to make each other some stickers to we can each stick them in our designated cities.

I did manage to take a couple of really shitty picture with my friend's mobile phone, but he has yet to send me said pictures.

The Pilgrim Fox (El-Hajj Tha3lab)

While in Jordan, in the city of Irbid, I came across this little children's book at a bookstore, which was just too hilarious not to pick up.

So it's about a fox who decides to go to Hajj (pilgrimage). He breaks the news to the duck in the neighborhood, so they all -including the mama duck- decide to put on their best clothes and join him... even though going to Hajj entails dressing up like this. So anyway, they all join the Fox on his little boat which he will apparently row to Mecca, which is not located on the banks of a river or the coast of a sea; it's actually in the middle of the desert, but the fox will row there anyway.

Only the youngest duckling is forbidden to join. Why? Just because he's the youngest.

So the young duckling, crying and sobbing, because all young kids want to go to Hajj of course, complains to the miserable-looking dog in the dog house.

Now the only time I've ever seen a dog house is probably Tom and Jerry cartoons. On this side of the world, dogs live on the street. If they so happen to have an owner, said owner will defintely not build a dog house for the dog.

And what is up with the fields, trees, rivers and fences. Why is the setting of this Arabic-language story on the Hajj fox reminiscent of the south of France?

So as soon as the little duckling breaks the news to the dog, the dog knows that it's a con the Fox is pulling to lure all the ducks to his home so he can feast on them. And indeed, the Fox tells the ducks it's time for a little tea break, to relax from the long journey (?), and invites them into his home for a cup of tea.

How would these ducks trust this Fox to take them all the way to Mecca in the heart of a desert, when a little rowing across the river is enough for the Fox to take a tea break?

Anyway.

The brave dog swims across the river, barks at the fox, scares him off, and rows the stupid ducks back home.

And the final surprise: created and published in Cairo, Egypt.

Bravo. Sheer genius.

During the Shatana workshop I was pretty much going camera crazy, because, well... it's fun. After the workshop was over, a few of the artists and myself took some time to see Amman, Wadi Rum, and Petra. My camera's battery actually died before entering Petra, so that's pretty much the only thing I don't have pictures of. I plan on making up for that when I bike to Jordan next month! Yeah!

Just to mention a couple of things I wanted to "record" about my Jordan experience; if you're the organizer of a residency program/event, giving your residency beneficiaries a map of the neighborhood upon their arrival is of utmost importance.

Not only did Ola's brother (Ola is founder of Makan) pick Ruby and myself up from the airport, in doing so waiting for hours because Ruby's terrorist-like beard held us up for quite a while, but he also gave us a photocopy of a hand-drawn map of the neighborhood. Even though we would only be in the neighborhood for an hour before the bus that took us to Shatana would arrive.

And indeed we made use of the map, because we decided to walk around the neighborhood, get a nice bite to eat and do some quick site-seeing and orientation.

Now I've been on two residencies before, neither of which I had someone pick me up from the airport and neither of which I was handed a map of the neighborhood. Now I'm not one to be pampered, but if you're inviting artists to your city to work, a lift from the airport and a map of the neighborhood would definitely not hurt this initially lost and confused soul.

But maybe they just have a thing for hand-drawn maps. Hanan also drew a map of the village of Shatana, indicating the locations of the works of the participating artists, had it photocopied and handed out to arriving visitors on the Open Day.

One of the really cool memories I have of the workshop also is the napkins. That's right, the napkins.

The napkins were branded "Blue Fig" which I think is a popular cafe' in Amman, because I heard it being mentioned on several occasions, but the cool thing about these napkins was the quotes. Each napkin had a different popular quote that was inspiring and awesome, some by well-known artists and philosophers, others not so well known.

So it's been over a month since I returned from Jordan, and of course, I am very much detached from the entire experience now. My first week after my return, I must say, I was very much in a bit of a zone; lots of sitting around, staring blankly at nothingness, and presumably thinking about important shit.

But the Cairo hustle and bustle eventually got the better of me, and I really haven't had the luxury of blank staring at nothingness or thinking about important shit since. Instead, I've been caught up in non-stop working; either pumping out commercial work, sitting in meetings, or working on enhancing my studio space: like installing shelves, prepping up the drawing table, getting a desk, organizing files, building a side table; that sorta thing.

I'm still not done with my covering of the whole Shatana Workshop. I just never got around to it while I was in Shatana, not only due to the limited internet access situation, but also because I was actually busy working at the workshop. No really! And then of course there was getting caught up in real life upon my return to Cairo.

Luckily though, I saved everything Shatana related in a nice folder for when the time comes that I have a clear enough head to write all about the experience. And so here it is; the time has come.

Meeting a Real Calligrapher

when we all paid a visit to Irbid, the closest big city to Shatana and funnily enough, the second biggest city in all of Jordan, right after Amman, the capital, which holds first place. The second biggest city, although rther noisy and packed when compared to Shaana, still seems like more of a beach town when compared to my hometown Cairo.

I decided to try and find me a proper calligrapher there. Emad, our designated truck driver, pointed me in the direction of a little calligraphy shop. After a little chitchat with the shop owner over what I had in mind, he advised me to go talk to another guy who owns a shop on the same street. One of the shop employees was present and he had me call up the owner/master calligrapher person. A little while later, together with the shop employee (named El Masry), I found myself visiting this hot shot at his home, and as it turns out, this stuck up master calligrapher who doesn't go to work is the recipient of a 2nd place award in last year's international calligraphy competition. This year, he's hell-bent on winning 1st place.

So I tell him about my project which he finds interesting, and we bounce some ideas and sketches back and forth, but it's apparent my concept is far from complete; he advises me to sit and work on it a bit more, get away from distractions and flesh it out some more. The closer it is to completion, conceptually and practically, the better it wll be for him to recreate it in calligraphic glory. I agree.

What was really interesting though was how a lot of our talk involved the work of other calligraphers; those he admired and those he felt introduced new exciting things to calligraphy, usually very subtle things that involved a simple shift in brush, or further involving the type of ink in the actual form of the letters. It became apparent that there's this whole cult of calligraphers on a pretty global scale, who all know each other's work, build upon it, and compete. A cult I was never aware of.

In the cab on the way back from the calligrapher's place, El Masry pointed out a couple of signs their signage shop had made: horribly designed print signs, complete with bevel and emboss and multi-color heaven. So sad. El-Masry tries to reason that the market demands this type of thing and that hand-made calligraphy is not a money-making artform. I tell him there must be a way to link the two, fill the gap. He tells me about a client for women's wear who asked for a photo of a veiled girl on the sign. I try to tell him about how photo placement and its involvment in the layout of the sign can make all the difference in the world, or perhaps even the client could've been convinced to let him transform the photo into more of an elegantly illustrated image of chique elegant strokes.

July 9, 2009:
The Characteristics of the Shatana Typeface

After meeting with the calligrapher I started thinking more about exactly what it is I wanted out of the typeface I want to develop for this Sign Language project, the typefact I've appropriately decided to name: Shatana Typeface.

These characterstics boil down to the following:

1) The font must be clearly readable from an appropriate distance, used for signs.

2) For further simplification, any one Arabic letter that usually appears in more than one form (it's common in Arabic, like the Jeem, Ha2, and Kaf, for example), if its possible to develop one form for it that works regardless of its placement, then that would be ideal.

3) All dots above the line are aligned to the same height, which is also the height of "tall letters" in the typeface (Alef, Kaf, etc). All dots below the line are also aligned at the same height below the light, which are also aligned with all "sub-line" letters in the typeface (Waw, Ra2, etc.). All mid-sized letters in the typeface are aligned at the same height (Dal, Ha2, Meem, etc.)

4) The font should try to retain the romance of original Arabic calligraphic qualities. Introducing this signage project to the isolated village of Shatana definitely suggests modernizing and enhancing, but that does not mean totally letting go of certain important traditions and a way of life that differentiates this isolated village from bigger more popular cities. That aspect should be expressed in the look and feel of this new typeface imposed upon the village's public space.

July 10, 2009:
Developing Basic Forms of the Shatana Typeface

Based on the above characteristics, I start developing the basic forms of the letters accordingly.

I take my little doodles to Master Calligrapher Abu Ayyad in Erbid who thinks he can work with them and come up with something slick. He needs a day to make a first rough draft, which we can look at and make notes and adjustments to, and then 3 days to proceed to finishing the final draft of the font.

July 11, 2009:
Shatana Typeface: First Draft

Abu Ayyad's idea of a first draft is apparently writing "bismellah al rahman al raheem" using this new writing style, which is good, not all bad. It tells us how the font will work in the construction of words and sentances and where it may need improvement.

And indeed, I make some ammendments which he agrees with. He'll have the entire alphabet, properly calligraphed, with all necessary usage guidelines ready for me on the 13th.

Oh and he makes me a little gift that reads "Mohammed Fahmy the Innovator" in beautiful Arabic calligraphy.

July 12, 2009:
Signs Are Not Just Type

For the shapes of the signs themselves, I developed 3 basic shapes: circle, rectangle, and like... like a rectangular arrow. Circles are for important notices, colored in white+red+optional black. Rectangles are for basic announcements (like reaching Shatana, colored in pink, or environment-related, colored in green of course). Arrows are for directions to places inside the village (like a church, mini-market, or cheese factory, all colored in blue+white).

I also came up with the idea of introducing a sort of public sitting area which would have a yellow+black circle sign to go with it.

Emad takes me to the carpenter in Al Husun who agrees to make me 13 signs for 80 Jordanian Dinars (624.5 Egyptian Pounds) which is not bad considering the size of these babies (pole = 210 cm high x 10 cm thick / actual sign = 105 cm wide x 45 cm high x 1 cm thick / 90 cm diameter for circular signs). Not to mention that he agrees to deliver them all on the same day!

This, as a fact, would never, ever, ever be possible in Cairo. Ever.

July 13, 2009:
Shatana Typeface Calligraphed

It's beautiful.

As soon as Ayyad presents me with his final renditions of the Shatana alphabet, I feel a euphoric joy. Just going through page after page of letter by letter, each clearly illustrated as a stand alone letter and when combined with other letters whether its at the beginning of the word, the middle, or the end, measured entirely in relation to the dots of the font. It's exactly how I pictured it, if not better, all for just 50 Jordanian Dinars.

And if that wasn't enough, he even makes me ANOTHER gift. A fantastic calligraphic art piece featuring my name, which when you concentrate, you can tell was made with so much more care and dedication than the first one. It's very beautiful.

I let it sink in and towards the end of the day, I see some changes could still be made to some of the letters when put in application, especially if turned into a proper, usable computer font.

July 14 to 16, 2009:
Making the Signs

The actual process of making the signs was an entirely different project all together. It involved several phases all on its own.

1) Designing the Signs: Tracing and vectorizing the letters from the Shatana Typeface Guideline booklet developed by Abu Ayyad, and using the letters to construct the words on the signs and combine the words with proper iconography to go with it.

1. public seating area .2. grasshopper calling, because in a lot of areas in the village you can here the electric-surge-sounding sounds of grasshoppers coming from the fields . 3. bus/minibus/truck stop, because most of the times its not really a bus .4. mini market .5. party hall .6. church .7. dairy products

some signs i never got around to actually making due to time constraints
left to right: 1. people passing through, because the people still live in Shatana according to a village mentality, so its normal for people to walk anywhere, cross a road at any point whenever they see fit, but because cars have also been introduced to the village, its not hard for someone to get hurt when crossing a street without paying attention. i felt a sign like this was mandatory. shame i never got to it. 2. harsh slope, because the village is on the hills and some of the slopey roads are seariously impossible to climb. 3. evil dog, because a lot of the village people owned some seriously vicious guard dogs who would bark non stop at passersby without being tied to a leash.

2) Turning Designs to Stencils: The best way to go about doing that is to have the designs "electro-cut" through vinyl at a vinyl-printing shop. The first "calligrapher" I met at Al Husun, the one who turned out to be a graphic designer, he had his own little electo-cut machine at his home, so I had him take care of this part for me.

3) Painting Signs: For the signs to look official, like real signs, they needed a nice, smooth, and shiny finish, to make them resemble metal, like most government-installed signs. To do this, I -with the help of Rafic Nasreddin, Iz Oztat, Jeanette Gaussi, and Youmna Chalala- had to sand the wood first, paint generously with a brush, flatten it out with a roller, let it dry, sand it out again, paint with a brush again, flatten out with roller again, and then let it dry.

4) Stencilling Designs on Signs: The stenciled adhesive vinyls are then stuck onto the signs. This I probably would have never been able to pull off without the awesome help of Salwa Aleryani. You then spray-paint evenly and appropriately. Let it dry, and then detach the vinyls to reveal the sign in its finished glory.

July 15, 2009:
Being Screwed

One day left till Shatana Workshop's big "Open Day." and I'm still not finished yet. I was planning on finishing everything today but of course an obstacle had to pop out of the no where. In this case; a migrane. Medicine, food, relaxing; nothing seems to work. It looks like 3 days of sniffing paint, tinner, and getting it all on my skin in multiple locations over-intoxicated my body. Or maybe I'm just a wuss.

Another obstacle that presented itself today: harsh winds, which blew all kinds of sands, dusts, and miniature particles on anything I had covered in wet paint.

Also my lack of painting experience seriously shows. It took me a few tries and screw ups to figure out the right techniques and materials.

My biggest obstacle of all is trying to keep my brushes and buckets clean. After killing a couple of brushes and a roller, I made sure I had a bucket of water close by at all tmes. Didn't work. Neither did a bucket of tinner. Nor did soapy water.

Fuck it, let the brushes die. I just want to finish my signs already.

July 17, 2009:
Shatana Workshop - Open Day!

Because of my very well developed Egyptian genes, I was of course only done with my signs at the very last minute: at exactly 4:00 pm on Friday July 17, which was the exact time of Open Day's opening!

Of course because fixing the signs into the ground would've been more time consuming than possible, I ended up -with the awesome help of Mohsin Harraki and Emad- tying the signs onto street poles using wires, and it worked perfectly.

There was a bit of skepticism as to whether or not the new Shatana Typeface could actually work for a signage system; one: because of the calligraphic qualities, and two: because of experimenting with some letterforms in ways contrary to usual.

The signs did in fact turn out readable, even according to the testiment of the village children, not only up close but from a distance as well. The reason it worked, I think, would be the strict guidelines that govern letter spacing and heights, even with the diffulties that might be caused by calligraphic styling or unorthodox letterform experimentation.

One of the interesting accidents that happened with the sign-making was a sort of pseudo-aging look that occurred due to my sloppy paint job. So the end-result was sort of paradoxical in the sense that the signs, from a design perspective, looked absolutely new and fresh, yet the worn out paint job made them look like they'd been there for quite a long time. So upon entering the village, you feel like you're actually in an altogether new world with its very own rules and influences.

July 18, 2009:
The Day After Answers the Big Question

The uber philosophical question this whole Sign Language project was supposed to originally pose is whether or not design is a social necessity. Is design only a luxury that fortunate societies can benefit from?

This question would be answered by whether or not the village people found the newly installed signs beneficial to their lifestyle. Would the signs eventually become a necessity they couldn't function properly without?

Although the reaction of some village people suggested so on Open Day, the following day suggested the complete opposite when all signs, every single one of them, was stolen in the early morning.

So I guess yes, design is in fact a luxury and not a necessity at all.

The Future of the Shatana Typeface

Just because project Sign Language proved design to be an unnecessary luxury, does not mean that a cool typeface can't come from it, and so I'm working on refining the line art for the Shatana Typeface, trying to perfect it, before figuring out how to turn it into a proper usable font.

I'm also cooking a spin-off of the Shatana Typeface. A sleeker, more simplified, more modern take on it. I call it... *drumroooolllllsssss* anticipation *moredrumrooooollllsssss*... The Post Shatana Typeface.

Hopped onto the morning ride to Al Husun today; a pickup truck transfers those of us who need it to the nearest town of Al Husun twice a day; once in the morning and onc in the afternoon for internet access at the local church, or grocery shopping and whatnot.

So I hopped onto the morning ride to Al Husun this morning to meet with the local caligrapher to develop a special typeface for my Sign Language project. I was a little disappointed to find that the only Al Husun caligrapher is actually a graphic designer -well, if you can classify what he does as design; its definitely graphic, but his design sense is questionable- a lot of the stuff he does, most of what he showed me is kitshy "inspirational" graphics and posters for schools, dictating kids to behave and be clean, using digital lense flare effects, bevel embossing, multiple drop shadows, horrid typography, and multi-color heaven.

After explaining to him the characteristics of the type I wanted, he went on about modifying an already existing computer font which I knew would not acheive the sort of results I wanted and proved this guy knows very little of traditional caligraphy. Although he did give me a few nice tips and an old letterpress as a general guideline for the Arabic alphabet.

Over the course of the last 3 days, we've been doing rounds of artist-presentations here at Shatana; giving everyone the chance to get to know one another's work. The quality I've seen here is very admirable, nothing half-assed or pseudo-anything. Very diverse; these people would probably not be gathered in one place under any other circumstance, not only because of geographical origin or cultural background, but because of subject matter and approach as well. I am intrigued and excited to see what they will come up with in Shatana.

"Sign Language" is the name of the project that's been finding its way into my head since I arrived in Shatana, which -funnily enough- is based on an idea I was discussing/joking about with Moe Assem (Campus Mag designer) the night before boarding my plane.

" Sign Language" will be about introducing graphic design where graphic design may not be relevant. In this case: the town of Shatana, Jordan. In doing so, I'm trying to develop a complete signage system for the town, which involves developing an appropriate typeface, signage shapes and colors, placement, and naming (street names, territory names, etc.) which will all be based on elements from the town.

That's one phase of the project. Another phase will involve asking townspeople about their hopes and dreams for the town. Signs are to be created for these future dreams and placed in their relevant locations.

A big part of this project is exploring the notion of design relevance; Is it a luxury or is it a human necessity? Can you go without it once you have it? Or is your brain instantly altered afterwards?

I do believe that there is a lot of unnecessary luxury design in the world, but I also believe there is a basic necessity for a certain level of functional and decorative design in almost any community, but maybe that's the ego of the designer inside talking.

I'ma have to wait and see what "Sign Language" will have to say about it.

Out of Office

I am out of office, currently in Jordan participating in Shatana International Workshop organized by Makan.

Shatana is a small, rather isolated, village in the hills. For internet access, a pickup truck -which is ultimately cool- takes us to the nearest town: Al Husun, which is about a 15-20 minute drive.

The village is beautiful, the participating artists are awesome, and the food is something to live for. After only 3 days of being here, we're all in the early developing stages of ideas already, and its pretty exciting. I'll try to update the blog with more details as things progress.

July 17 is scheduled to be the open day in Shatana, where all the artists' work is available to the public, who are notified of the event via newspaper advertising, posters, flyers, and email.

I, however, will be staying in Jordan till July 22 for some extra mingling and joke exchanging.

Borneo Bioherbal, based in Malaysia, is a company that specializes in the extraction of Agarwood from Aquilaria trees in southeast Asia, used for the production of essential oils and distinctive fragrances.

I developed the branding and visual identity for the company, using a rather scientific looking typeface, hinting at the process of producing the essential oils made from Agarwood. The red core within the last O of "BORNEO" references the Agarwood itself, which is the resinous heartwood of Aquilaria trees. The leaves protruding from the L brings us back to the natural atmosphere of the origins of the fragrant oils produced from Agarwood.

Rejected Ad: Philosophy Interiors

After being asked to create an advertising campaign for Philosophy Interiors that would show the company's attitude and focus more on creating awareness regarding Philosophy's special taste when it comes to how the furniture it retails is picked and chosen in a new, creative, and nontraditional way, I was pretty excited to develop something fresh, even by my own standards.

I proposed creating a campaign where each ad frames a special piece of furniture available at philosophy as a legendary and iconic piece of art, almost god-like. When the clients agreed, I went for it:

But then I was told what I created was way too far off from the company's direction, and that they had to have ads featuring several pieces of furniture so customers could see their range and use their ads to pick furniture to buy.

The Curious Boy on the Metro

I was on the metro one day, sitting across a curious boy and his two parents. Stopping at a metro station, the screech of the metro announced the eminent stop, followed by the sound of doors electronically rolling open, amplified by however many doors a metro of multiple carts has. The noisy shouts and over-multi-layered speech, grunts, and chit-chatter of masses fighting to get on and get off simultaneously slowly fades out, making room for the television voice and music, amplified by the hollow space of the subway and multiplied by however many television sets they have at the metro station.

The curious boy's ears perk up and his eyes twirl, asking his parents "Who turns off the television here?"

The dad responds "no one," and the mom pats the curious boy's shoulder.

The metro gets into gear, heading for the next station. And between mom and dad, sits the curious boy on the metro.

I Did Not Make This: Terminator Invitation

So I got an invite to the Terminator Salvation premier at Nile City the other night, which is such a shitty Hollywood film that does nothing but make Christian Bale's on-screen machismo demand loss of any respect as an actor.

What was kinda cool though was the invitation design itself. Nothing insanely brilliant, but just kinda cool.

The red dot on the outside of the invite's envelope, which is supposed to be reference to the Terminator's glowing eye is kinda neat.

What could've upped it way up there and actually made it tons cooler though is if they'd actually printed the red dot in actual glow-in-the-dark ink, or heck, even if red glow in the dark isn't really available, I would opt for a miniature red bulb that turn on upon opening the envelope, like they do with musical greeting cards except its a miniature bulb instead of a micro-speaker thing.

When it comes to print design, the materials used are as much a part of the design as the design itself.

Still, very cool effort and a little something for me to decorate my laptop with.

A.K.A. Education

ACAF is organizing a program from May to August on workshops and lectures that focus on education in contemporary art under the title of A.K.A. Education, for which I developed a pretty crisp, clean, and objective identity for, including logo and a poster/newsletter system. The first poster is actually done, printed, and plastered across walls in Cairo and Alexandria.

Big State is Not Watching Me

Cristina Viehmann, a friend of Mahmoud Hamdy's from Switzerland was visiting a couple weeks ago and managed to show up at my talk at Medrar, which prompted her to include a little mention of me in her post on freedom of speech for the online news service she works for: ISN Blog.

In it she writes: "In his work he does not refrain from criticizing both the government and the societal or religious constraints ruling his country. Referring to a cover from a December 2004 Cairo youth magazine, illustrating the many 'fine' inventions of Arab civilization, one of which is the 'presidential monarchy,' I asked Mohammed: 'How critical can you afford to be?'"

Although still in a very early phase, figured I'd post a little sneak peak of this project I'm working on together with Mahmoud Hamdy, Ibrahim Islam, Ahmed Hefnawy, Kalbi Nur Orhan, and Manoj Kurian, which I'm having a lot of fun with.

I'm really digging the direction this project is forcing me to take in regards to form and style. The rules and limitations agreed on for this project (which I won't get into details of now) are leading me to fresh and exciting new experiments.

I put up the Egyptian flag in my balcony for no reason a couple days ago.

Every morning I look at it and see it alive. I see this pathetic flag, clumsily sewn together with a horribly printed emblem on it, I see it alive with awesome pride in the soft breeze of the day and I say... yeah. There is hope, motherfuckers.

Baroque - invitation

This is a little something from my archives which I realized I never posted about. I remember making it almost a year ago, and I was happy with being able to design something which was very much based on the materials used to design it.

It's an invitation announcing the opening of a furniture store (Baroque), and it got so many nice reactions from people it was sent to, and even helped prompt the CEO of German furniture brand: Kare to approach Ahmed Fahim, owner of Baroque, to open a Kare franchise in Egypt, for which I later created this.

So I made something, just for funsies really, not entirely intentional and based more on a little accident; I wanted to print out the photo Adham Bakry shot of me a few weeks back.

But my printer was out of ink, and a lot of the photo details were lost.

I particularly kinda liked how the hand with the mic sort of looked like it was the design on my shirt, and not on a piece of paper. I wondered what the picture would look like if I started drawing some missing details, combining markers with badly printed photography.

And then I wondered some more what it'd look like if I scanned it back in and added some digital colors and graphics to... this combination of markers and badly printed photography... and this was the result:

So this is a good example of how a poster can go wrong:

This was my original design for, well, a student juried art exhibition at the American University in Cairo, but after modifications insisted upon by the people responsible at the University, which included:
1- background color
2- using the one-line version of the AUC logo instead of the stacked version (2 lines)
3- enlarging the logo
4- moving the "department of performing and visual arts" below the logo instead of next to it
5- extending black highlights to poster edges

The result:
Although not entirely shitty, but I think the biggest problem in this version is extending the black text highlights to the edges of the poster, thereby dividing the poster into different parts, with each fraction of text occupying a separate part, with the image seemingly occupying an entirely seperate part as well. The blocks of black become blocks of dividers.

The original version on the other hand enjoys a sense of harmony between text and image and overall design which I gotta say I'm quite sad to have lost.

On a brighter note: Ahh, pretty relieved my talk on Wednesday went well. Thing is, if attendance is too low, you feel let down, and if attendance is high, you feel a bit of pressure not wanting to let people down. Attendance sure was high, with some people not having a place to sit. I gotta say it was felt pretty weird seeing people peep between heads at the door to try and catch glimpses of the screen.

I always get nervous before these public things. Although I was on the verge of peeing myself before the talk, and only really finished putting the presentation together as people were taking their seats - I was told I pulled it off coolishly while keeping peeps engaged and stuff. And all the copies I brought of the comic and From The End were sold. Sweet, I say. Sweet.

On Wednesday I'll be giving a little public talk and presentation at Medrar at 7:00. I'll take it way back to my lame ass beginnings, how I got started, all the way up to whatever the hell it is I'm doing nowadays.

I'll also be bringing some copies of my independently-produced 28-page publication "Min El-Akher/From The End" and the 80-page graphic novel co-created with the brilliant George Azmy "Atlal El Mosta2bal/Ruins Of The Future," both of which will be made available for sale (2 EGP and 4 EGP respectively).

The official press release from Medrar goes as follows:

On Wednesday 13/5/2009 the artist Ganzeer will presents his art works and his experience in open discussion with the audience, at Medrar for Contemporary Art, at 7:00 pm.

Ganzeer does illustrations, graphic design, writing, and video. From time to time Ganzeer will play around within a medium or venue he knows nothing about. His work has been shown in Egypt, Dubai, Holland, Germany, Belgium, and Poland, and has also been published in a variety of books and magazines as well as a few good sites on the internet. And just for the record, he’s a business graduate.
