iblipped.com has released an application that aims to provide accurate service provider coverage data with the help of GPS enabled BlackBerry users who install the iblipped app.

If you’ve ever wonder exactly how accurate your service provider coverage maps were and even doubted them at times, by installing the iblipped BlackBerry app you will be able to provide cell coverage in your area to iblipped, which they then use to update their coverage map (like the one seen above).

The app doesn’t actually have a coverage map since it’s just meant to gather data, and because of this may use up your battery more quickly since it uses GPS and data to connect to the iblipped servers. Of course you don’t always have to have the app turned on, and having a car charger may help if you have it on while traveling.

Features:

Works for both CDMA and UMTS carriers

Signal Strength mapping using GPS

Time or Distance based based recording

Ability to halt/resume gathering

Displays cell site information

Upload signal strength to a website for analysis

Uploading data through email.

iblipped is available as a a free download in the store. If you try it out let me know how it affected your battery and if you benefited from the coverage maps available at iblipped.com.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sprint (NYSE: S) announced today it will add the new BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone to the wireless industry’s best lineup of devices. Beginning today, customers can visit http://www.sprint.com/blackberrycurve8530 to pre-register for this next generation of the popular BlackBerry wireless device on America’s most dependable 3G network1 with the affordability of Sprint’s Everything Data plans featuring Any Mobile, AnytimeSM. Pricing and availability will be announced at a later date.

BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone makes it even easier to enjoy music on-the-go with dedicated keys to skip to the next song on a playlist, pause or play. It comes preloaded with several multimedia applications including BlackBerry Media Sync, Sprint Music Store™, Sprint TV™ and Pandora™. It also boasts dedicated applications for a smoothly integrated social networking experience with Facebook®, MySpace™ and Flickr™. BlackBerry Curve 8530 will be available in three color options – Black, Royal Purple and Red.

“BlackBerry Curve 8330 has been a tremendous success for Sprint. BlackBerry Curve 8530 continues that legacy with the addition of several important features that make it a winner for both entertainment and productivity,” said Kevin Packingham, Sprint Senior Vice President of Product Development. “This is one device that can really do it all with the email, calendar and contact synchronization BlackBerry is known for as well as the latest multimedia and social media features. We are anxious to bring it to our customers who also appreciate the strength of our network, the affordability of our rate plans and our Ready Now customer service experience.”

Sprint’s BlackBerry Curve 8530 will offer BlackBerry App World™ for instant access to thousands of applications. Sprint has employed an open Internet approach, and the Sprint Application Developer Program has been providing tools for third-party developers, since Sprint first launched the Wireless Web on its phones in 2001.

Sprint’s affordable Everything Data plans now include Any Mobile, Anytime, a feature that removes restrictive calling-circles and provides unlimited calling on the Sprint network to and from any U.S. wireless phone regardless of carrier, at no additional charge with Everything Data plans starting at $69.99 per month (all price plans exclude surcharges and taxes).

Sprint’s Simply EverythingSM offers nationwide unlimited calling, unlimited text and unlimited data, including email, social networking, Web browsing, Sprint Navigation, Sprint TV, streaming music, NFL Mobile Live and NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile, for only $99.99 per month (plus taxes and surcharges). That is a $1,200 savings over two years versus a comparable AT&T iPhone® plan2. Both Everything Data and Simply Everything plans are available to existing customers without extending their service agreement. New lines of service require a two-year service agreement.

The Sprint Mobile Broadband Network (inclusive of data roaming) reaches more than 269 million people, 18,652 cities and 1,838 airports. The Sprint Networks (inclusive of data roaming) have twice the coverage of AT&T’s current 3G network and 14 times the coverage of T-Mobile’s current 3G network, both based on square miles3.

According to Sprint performance data, Sprint Mobile Broadband connections are successfully connected and maintained better than 99 out of 100 times. According to a recent independent network test conducted by PC World, Sprint tested as the most reliable network overall among US carriers in a 13-city performance test4.

Sprint is the first national carrier to test, launch and market 4G technology. Separate from its 3G investment, Sprint has announced plans to extend its 4G leadership by launching the next-generation service in numerous markets in 2009, including the recently launched markets of Atlanta, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Portland, Ore.

Sprint is also the only wireless carrier to offer Ready Now service with trained retail associates to work one-on-one with customers to personalize their BlackBerry Curve 8530, set up features and demonstrate how it works before the customer leaves the store. Customers have the choice of sitting down with a Sprint retail associate at the time of purchase or they can schedule an appointment for a later time at www.sprint.com/storelocator.

The online Blackboard Academic Suite allows university faculty and students to connect and share course schedules, assignments, links, videos, contact information, grades, rosters, university updates and more. According to Blackboard’s press release, the BlackBerry client will offer similar functions:

The BlackBerry smartphone application enables many more users to enjoy an enhanced experience while navigating course catalogs and campus maps, e-mailing professors and classmates and receiving real time updates on course schedules, campus events, news and sports with Mobile Central (formerly MobilEdu((TM))), Blackboard Mobile’s flagship suite of applications.

…

With Mobile Central, users have access to course catalogs, directories and maps, they can identify exact campus locations with GPS and they can check campus news, schedules, and real-time scores for athletic teams. In addition, open APIs for Blackboard Mobile enable institutions to extend the platform’s offerings to fully customize and personalize the school’s iPhone, BlackBerry and mobile Web interfaces.

There is no public download and according to a rep I spoke with the Blackboard Mobile client will be made available through individual service providers. I checked the T-Mobile mobile website for the client and could not find it there (or anywhere) so if anyone happens to find it please let me know in the comments. Chances are the client will be made available through individual Blackboard sites if there is no public download.

With App, More Users Enjoy Enhanced Experience with Blackboard Mobile

DENVER, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Blackboard Inc. (Nasdaq: BBBB) announced the launch of an application for BlackBerry(®) smartphones, debuting at the University of Washington this week, as part of the new Blackboard Mobile((TM)) platform which is being leveraged by a growing number of campuses and K-12 schools to deliver a rich set of campus life services and content to mobile devices.

Originally optimized for users of Apple(®) iPhone(®) and iPod Touch(®) devices, the best Mobile Central experience is now available to users of BlackBerry smartphones. The suite is also generally accessible to users of any smartphone or mobile Web enabled device.

“This new platform allows us to easily reach our students, faculty and staff around the clock and deliver information whenever and wherever they want it, which increasingly is on mobile devices like BlackBerry smartphones and the iPhone,” said David Morton, Director of Mobile Communication Strategies at the University of Washington (UW). “As a modern, global university, UW committed to embracing mobile communications and is pleased to be the launch institution for the application for BlackBerry smartphones.”

“Institutions are looking for new ways to engage and support their communities, and we’re building a mobile platform that helps them do that,” said Michael Chasen, President and CEO of Blackboard. “Increasingly, we hope to help institutions change expectations by enabling mobile services and interactions that represent the full range of the education and campus experience.”

Originally developed by San Francisco-based Terriblyclever Design, LLC, which was acquired by Blackboard in July, Mobile Central is branded for each institution and accessed by users who download their institution’s application. The category defining suite of mobile applications for education is helping to better connect students, parents, faculty, prospective students and alumni to the campus experience in a way that wasn’t possible before.

The announcement was made at the EDUCAUSE 2009 annual conference in Denver, Colo., where several thousand members of the higher education community have gathered at the industry’s premier information technology event.

“The app for BlackBerry smartphones is something our clients have asked for and is part of our effort to create an optimized experience for all mobile users,” said Kayvon Beykpour, Vice President of Blackboard Mobile. “We’re happy to work with institutions to leverage technologies that meet the expectations of students and other campus constituents who live and learn in a mobile, digital world.”

For more information about the Blackboard Mobile platform, please visit http://www.blackboard.com/mobile.

RIM has posted a security advisory (KB19701) that all BlackBerry Desktop Manager versions earlier than version 5.0 contain a vulnerability that would allow a malicious user to remotely execute code on your computer:

This advisory relates to a vulnerability in a Lotus Notes Intellisync DLL that the BlackBerry Desktop Manager may use. This vulnerability may allow a malicious user to perform an attack that leverages social engineering to achieve remote code execution on the computer running the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. If the legitimate (logged in) user clicks a link to a malicious web site (for example, in an email message, in a browser, or an instant message) on the computer that is running the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, a vulnerability in an Intellisync component could allow the malicious user who sent the link or created the malicious web site to execute code on the computer using the privileges of the legitimate user.

Note: The affected Lotus Notes Intellisync DLL is included by default in all BlackBerry Desktop Manager installations. This vulnerability exists whether or not the DLL is used after installation.

Issue Severity: This vulnerability has a Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) score of 9.3.

Issue Status: Vulnerability confirmed. For more information, see the Resolution section.

To avoid becoming a victim of a malicious user RIM is recommending everyone update their BlackBerry Desktop Manager immediately to at least version 5.0.1. To download this update visit the BlackBerry Software Downloads page and select appropriate version in the drop-down menu. RIM has also issued the following workaround:

You can disable the Lotus Notes Intellisync functionality by unregistering the Intellisync component DLL, lnresobject.dll. Disabling the functionality prevents a malicious user from exploiting the vulnerability.

To unregister the DLL on the computer running the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, at a command line enter the command: regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\IS71 Connectors\Lotus Notes5.0\lnresobject.dll”

via KB19701
