The biggest surprise in this book was that it didn't end! Oh, there were no more pages to read . . . but none of the plot lines were resolved. It "ended" in the middle. I don't like being taken advantage of in this way and for this reason alone, I won't read any more in the series. Normally, I love a series because I fall in love with the characters as I did with this book. But I expect each book to also stand on its own. This one doesn't.So it's done . . . and I'm done.

I'm a big fan of both authors, so I was hugely disappointed with this book. It was both the characters & the ending that I did not like. Instead of finding Jordana to be an exciting, independent woman for the time period, I thought she was manipulative and self-serving in her actions, never considering the repercussions of her actions on other people. She had a singlemindedness about her that was not admirable because of the way she went about getting what she wanted, while confessing God's leading & protection. Her bullying of her older brother came off as disrespectful & mean, which was disturbing. The story of her older sister in CA drug on endlessly with both husband & wife repeating the same litany of complaints, without trusting God or each other with their burdens. I got tired of reading about them. I did enjoy & respect Jordana's brother & their new friend, Caitlyn. Adding to my dissatisfaction with the book, was getting to the end, only to find NO resolution to any of the main characters stories!Rarely do I remove a book from my device, but this one is now gone.

I have read and enjoyed books by both authors, so I had high hopes for this novel. I found this volume disappointing on many fronts. The action took place across the US, with subjects ranging from the Civil War, the Transcontinental Railroad, Westward expansion, and the photographic processes of the time period. I thought the pacing was uneven, and sluggish for the most part. The characters were fairly engaging, but I felt that none of them were really well developed. All seemed to have major trouble with communicating their needs and feelings. There were multiple plot lines and NONE were fully resolved at the conclusion of this novel. Even so, the ending felt contrived and I had a hard time believing that parents in that time period would be supportive of the choices their children made at the conclusion. (This comment is vague intentionally so as not to be a spoiler)I felt that the authors would have served their characters (and readers )better had they chosen to focus on one set of characters at a time, and had at least one plot line reach a satisfying conclusion in each novel. The choices they have made impel the reader to buy multiple volumes in order to have any resolution. This strategy failed in my case, as I just don't care what happens next to any of these characters.Content Review:Sex:noneCursing: noneViolence: fistfights and gunshotsReligion : prayer and trust in God mentioned often, but no strong statements of faith in Christ or Salvation message.

An interesting read of the civil war and the conception of the railroads. The story covers a couple in California who hunts the gold dream and ends up working for the railroad. In love but unable to have children cause their marriage to strain, but they manage to hold on, barely.There's also a brother sister duo in New York. Benton is a photographer who is hired to take pictures of the country, cities near where the railroads will be. Jordana is finishing school, and has a lot of spunk and actually, she is what keeps the story going. Then there is Caitlin, who arrives from Ireland and is supposed to go to the couple in California.Great story line, just nothing is resolved in the end. Not really a cliffhanger, just a bland dead end. Yet still worth reading if you are into the American civil war era and the railroads.

After reading a couple of completely amateur freebie Westerns, tucking into this one proved to be pure delight. It brilliantly brings to life the early days of the Civil War from the viewpoint of young New Yorkers. A highlight was the young man's struggle with complex issues of enlisting. The plot treats the reader to a look inside the home of the Vanderbilts and high New York Society and the challenges and thrills of traveling West in wartime. A less engaging subplot follows the struggles of a California miner who fritters away his wife's fortune and the repetitive narrative of their marital woes. This was but loosely engaged to the main plot and might better have been saved for a different volume.At times the writing sank toward the pedantic. Many pages are wasted with characters struggling over the same issues in their heads rather than living them in breathtaking action or clever dialog. A great editor should be all over that. Finally, the writers just seemed to pick a spot to stop writing with a small tease for the next volume of the series. If you enjoy a great ride to a breathtaking climax and a settling denouement, you'll not find it here.

Very disappointing with little or no great art to learn from just nubby examples I passed doing when I was teenager.clearly misleading.lousy examples that are just poor art to be begin with and the .....darn I feel so angry about this book and its unkept promise and the cost. .....PLEASE STAY AWAY THERE ARE BETTER FARE OUT THERE.

I.love.Lacey. That's all there is to say. She has been not only one of my top female voices since I first heard "I'm So Sick", but she is also one of my favorite writers. From lyrics, to journal entries she shares, to the books she's released. This woman knows God's love and sprinkles Him on EVERYTHING. Now with that being said, I honestly wasn't sure how I was going to respond to this specific book. I wasn't sure how her reflections would play along with the journal entries, poetry, prayers and everything else she shares, but to my surprise it all worked and worked very well. I've already recommended this book to many friends and family members as a must read. Lacey provided me with amazing example of knowing God's love, shining God's love, and living God's love in the midst of any trial. Which ultimately, is why we are here. Two huge man hands thumbs up for this one.

This book took my breath away with every page. Lacey put so many unexplainable emotions into words so flawlessly. I read each page with a ravenous hunger. Sometimes life can get in the way, but this book helped to get me back to the basics with Jesus. Lacey has a true gift. Youâ€™ll be in the loving arms of God with every word. Itâ€™s all about love and how we accept and give it.

Great book. Lacey is an amazing writer and deep thinker, she is truly an amazing woman. The only thing I find a little strange about some of her books is how she refers to god as â€œdaddyâ€ and sometimes seems to obsess over what god thinks of her life that it becomes unhealthy to the point where I think maybe she isnâ€™t truly enjoying special moments. Like the page where it is the day of her wedding and instead of focusing on herself she is worried about â€œmissing godâ€ and responding to whispers in her head from him. I just feel like maybe if you arenâ€™t 100% a believer of all Christianity teaches her writing can come off a little bit too much like someone basing their life off scripture when in reality no one really knows if it really came from god or not.

I received this book super quick close to release date. It is such a fabulous an interesting book, she always has such a open mind an just wants to share things with people but never is preachy about it an never makes it seem like if u view n believe otherwise that you are less than. She even offers help if you are open to god n everything..like if this is something you want here is a prayer you can use if you are a bit confused n lost about how to open your heart n soul to him. All of her books are 30/10 an put things into words that are sometimes not easy to do. She speaks the message if i can survive, thrive an overcome.. So can you!

I have been in a spiritual drought lately, and I found myself in a rut I couldn't get out of. This book really helped open my eyes, and see life differently than before. Lacey Sturm is not only a well accomplished singer and artist, she's also an amazing author! This book challenged me to rethink how I thought being a Christian was all about. Don't judge a book by its cover, and try this book out!

The book needed a reference to keep up with all of the characters, it was a bloated read full of build up and then the end was too abrupt. I actually flipped back over pages to see if I'd somehow skipped over a chapter. It was if she realized she'd gone over her word allotment and had to cut things short and so she just 'told' us what happened instead of 'showing' us in the story. Almost like something a narrator would do to speed things along. The ending was a huge disappointment and certainly not a happy finish.

I was a little disappointed with this novel, though I loved the three originals. The author rushed it... The most interesting parts were glossed over. SPOILERS SPOILERS I was bored with Takeo and highly disappointed by Kaede. I wish the author had instead focused the chapters on the daughters' abilities, increased the romance between the eldest daughter and the senior retainer, and spent a LOT more time focusing on the son and his ghost master ability, by leaving Kenji alive or something to teach him, or having Kenji's ghost teach him? There was just SO much potential and so many loose ends. Super disappointing. It had all the teasing elements to be an amazing story, I don't know what happened -- it just rushed to the end. Hearn's editor really failed her.

I found the entire series spellbinding, full of magic, love, war. This reads like a legend. The characters are mythical and very compelling, as is the story.

Donâ€™t read this book. Iâ€™m not kidding.Iâ€™m a cynical pragmatist, a realist. I donâ€™t need a happy ending. None of this needed to happen. This book was a brutal, problematic, tedious, unnecessary ending to an otherwise beautiful series. If you love the Otori, go straight to Heavenâ€™s Net Is Wide, which is a masterpiece.Iâ€™m not sure I can reread the series, recommend it, or remember it as fondly after this book.

I entirely agree with what "Avid Reader" wrote in the first review of this book, quote: "All I can say is that if you liked the first three books in the Tales Of The Otori... leave it there. Let that be the end, and that is what Lian Hearn should have done also." The reviewer from "Book List" gave it a good write-up, that's marred by the fact she gets some of the main characters' names wrong (she mixes up Arai and Akio for example). I wonder whether she actually read the book.The Tales of the Otori were supposed to be a trilogy, and should NEVER have become a tetralogy. This fourth instalment was probably written under the publisher's pressure due to the success of the first three, but Lian Hearn ran out of ideas. All she does in this book is some filling-up, some mental acrobatics and some not believable plot twists. As "Avid Reader" said, she manages to make you hate people you used to love, starting with Kaede who's such a likeable person, strong, smart, resilient and understanding in the first three books and, in just a few short pages, becomes an irrational shrew, not to mention a betrayer of both her husband and her people - Her second turnabout and her fate at the very end are psychologically and politically incomprehensible. Some of the plot twists make no sense whatsoever, and the way the prophecy about Takeo's death is fulfilled is just plain cheating. Not to mention that the reason he dies for is nonsensical. Takeo (who, like his adopted father Shigeru, has this deplorable habit of sparing his enemies' lives when he has them at his mercy, but is a strong warrior and a good ruler) becomes this wishy-washy guy, totally undone by... well, not to give too much away, by the result of his aforementioned leniency towards his enemies.The only good thing in the book is the deep but doomed love between Shigeko and Hiroshi, the only characters I could still like and sympathize with. (I also liked one of the twins, Miki, though her sister Maya gave me the shivers.) This book made me despise Takeo and hate Kaede, and wish I'd stayed with the end of "Brilliance of the Moon" and never bought this fourth book.The fifth book, however, which tells Shigeru's story before he rescued and adopted Takeo, brings the series into a nice circle - it ends where the first book begins, and it is both interesting and satisfying, but that's a subject for a different review.My advice is, read the first three books, skim quickly through the fourth if you feel you must, then read the fifth. After doing so myself (I mean reading the fifth book), I re-read the first three again, and enjoyed them all over again. But I did not, and will never, reread "The Harsh Cry of the Heron". Hiroshi and Shigeko notwithstanding, I'm sorry I read it at all in the first place. It ruined everything for me, which is why I reread the first three, just to (figuratively) take the bad taste out of my mouth.The two stars I gave it are for Hiroshi and Shigeko, and also in memory of how much I enjoyed the original trilogy.

The book was very hard to put down. A lot of research went into finding the traditional steps of the history during that period of time. Exciting ending with emotional words tied together.

This was a replacement copy for one (the last book of the Otori Series) that I gave away. I have already read it more than once and am sure that I will want to again.

This shouldn't have been the last book in the series. The ending was rushed. There was so much left of the story to tell.I wasn't ready for it to be over.Over all it was a good story, just wish there was more.

I picked this book as my August Kindle First read. Without giving anything away, I will try to review the novel.The story is told through multiple POV chapters of characters living in a close-knit suburban town - some of whom have never left and others who have had to return after years of being away. The chapters are short, slowly building up the story from various perspectives, and effectively ease the reader into the underlying mystery of the town and leave you wanting to keep reading the book to find out exactly what is going on. The characters are 3-dimensional, and their chapters noticeably differ in tone and writing style. I have been disappointed with some of the Kindle First books I've selected in the past because the writing was too bland and predictable, and good writing is very important to me. This book was well-written, pleasant, and a nice quick read.

According to the description, this is a book about secrets. There ARE secrets in the middle-class enclave of Sycamore Glen, NC. Old ones and newer ones; important and trivial. Some are deep, dark secrets and some are the kind of secrets that people think they've kept under wraps until something happens that makes them realize that everyone knew all along. The smooth surface of social intercourse must be maintained and sometimes pretending not to notice what's right in front of your nose is the only thing to do.But it seems to me that on a deeper level it's a book about loss. The losses that all of us sustain as we go through life and must deal with as best we can. There are inevitable losses that creep up so quietly we don't see them coming and couldn't do anything about it if we did. Sometimes (ironically) our losses are a result of getting what we hoped and worked for. Bryte has longed to be a mother, but her achievement of that status brings an end to the freedom and satisfactions of her career. Zell and her husband have worked and sacrificed for years to raise their children and make them independent adults. Now they can enjoy their well-earned "Golden Years" but Zell has a sense of emptiness and would give anything to go back to the chaos of a young family. Be careful what you wish for.There are the unspeakable losses that we know CAN happen. The end of a marriage. The death of a spouse or child. A severe, life-changing illness. We make bargains with God and do all the right things. I will eat a healthy diet, exercise, buy a car with a good safety rating, and never, ever let my children out of my sight. All worthwhile precautions, but then a shocking accident at the community pool reminds everyone that even the most stringent precautions don't always stave off tragedy.And there are losses that take us completely off guard. Police. Lawyers. Embarrassed friends and neighbors. The sense that "things like this don't happen to people like us." Two women in Sycamore Glen have men in prison. One has a family and strong support system. One doesn't. Is loss easier if you've never known anything else or harder if you had a lot to lose?What struck me forcibly was the lack of complacency. These women know that they lead enviable lives. They cling to what they have and try to deserve it. They are "good people." They look after each others' kids and walk the elderly neighbors' dogs. In a time of crisis, they even reach out to the neighborhood undesirables - the renters in the run-down house they call "the eyesore." It's awkward, but they do it. God love 'em.This is very much a "woman's book" although one of the main characters is a man whose wife deserted him and their children. Typically, he gets much more sympathy and help than would be extended to a woman in the same situation. All woman believe that men are really the weak, helpless ones and men take full advantage of that belief.It's also a very Southern book. The younger women sometimes lapse into "you guys" but they also say "a gracious plenty" and pepper their conversations with the polite Southern woman's disclaimer, "if you ask me." The nights are hot and the days are hotter and comfort food is a tomato sandwich on squishy white bread with lots of mayonnaise. Even the author's name is a tip-off. I grew up with Marybeths and Mary Lous and Mary Sues and Mary Carolines, but never a plain Mary. Southerners are great for embellishment. If you can't make something better, at least you can pretty it up. Sometimes it's a bit self-conscious in a "we're-Southern-aren't-we-cute way" but mostly it rings true.I enjoyed this book. Some of the people and the situations are cliches, but cliches and stereotypes exist because there's some truth in them. While we all feel unique, there are only so many human possibilities. The teen queen whose adult life disappoints her. The shy wallflower who blossoms into a beauty but lacks confidence. The old people who envy the young ones' full lives and the young people who envy the old folk's freedom and financial security. The men and women who fall in love and don't live happily ever after. The misfits who make us uneasy and fearful. The losers who irritate us by making the same mistakes over and over. These are real, recognizable people.This isn't a perfect book. Sometimes the author makes her points a little too carefully. Ideally, the characters should tell the story and the reader should interpret it. Still, the author created a cast of characters and made me want to finish the book and find out what happens to them. Isn't that what fiction is all about?

Lance is still technically married but feeling overwhelmed by his wife taking off without explanation half a year before. With two young kids of his own to manage while keeping afloat at work, he comes to rely on next door neighbor Zell, a grandmotherly woman whose house feels empty without children running around. Also relying on Zell is young Cailey, who finds herself taken in after her own single mother becomes overwhelmed taking care of her brother. The characters all find themselves gravitating towards each other at their daily pool outings, and their stories become intertwined as their lazy Southern summer stretches on.The blurb on the back of this book seemed to make it seem more like a mystery or thriller, with "dark revelations," and "long-buried secrets." This book didn't seem to really have any of those aspects to it, though; it was dramatic, as any small town is with its rumors and skeletons in the closet, but it wasn't particularly thrilling or mysterious. It read just like a dramatic piece of Southern fiction, which it was. I enjoyed my read for the most part; there were plenty of characters so there always seemed to be something going on, and I felt invested in some of their lives. However, it also just felt a little flat. It would probably make a decent beach read, but it didn't really rock my world.

I am a guy who usually reads sci-fi, magical realism, or history. I only downloaded this because Amazon gave it away for free this month to Prime users. I am glad I did.The book is well written with a quiet, assured voice. The troubles that eventually surface could be considered a little on the dramatic side, yet they have grown so organically from the characters, that they don't seem at all contrived or forced. It is a rare thing these days for an author to manage to move the plot along without resorting to out of character or illogical actions of the characters.I have always been a loner by nature. I am awkward and shy in social situations and have trouble "reading" people that can lead to misunderstandings. I have found it easier and less stressful to be alone. However, this story inspires me to go meet my neighbors and get to know them, even though I fear the entanglements that could follow or to find out I dislike them. But who knows, maybe it could lead to something better as well.

Normally I don't write reviews on the books I read because I read upwards of 35-40 per year. In short...I LOVE to read! But in this case...I was so disappointed in this monotonously boring work I just had to write a review so all you Nicholas Sparks fans out there realize this is NOT one of his normally good books. I have trie3d for three nights to get into this boring story of a couple in their later years planning their daughter's sudden wedding. But it is impossible! I found myself skipping full pages to get past the monotony and try to find his normally good writing. Horrible waste of money and time. What happened to this author?? It's like he was just reaching for any subject to write another book to make some more money based on his name. I would have to recommend NOT bothering to purchase this book. I ended up throwing it away and it made me angry that he wrote such a boring piece of work that I foolishly bought!

Wilson has worked to provide for his family, letting the romance slip from his marriage. His wife, Jane, is so disappointed when he completely forgets their anniversary one year, and he feels so guilty about it that he goes all out to make it up to her. My favorite character was Noah, of course, from The Notebook, my favorite book from this author. I loved the way he greets Wilson and the swan in the story. The best part of the book is the ending, and I loved it! I don't want to spoil it for others, so that's all I'll say. If you enjoyed The Notebook, don't miss this one! People CAN be romantic. Either naturally or with choice and practice. It's maddening when someone says, "This is just who I am." Often, it's to justify some characteristic that's less than desirable. As the man telling the story, people can and do change. This was a very warm and inspiring story. Since it is told with a male's voice, yes, that gender would enjoy it too. And be better for it. All will enjoy it but specifically those who have been married for more than a few years. I related to many parts of the story including it sending me back in time with my memories .The book is a semi follow up of THE NOTEBOOK but can very well stand alone since the focus is on other characters.I loved the twist at the end! I didn't see it coming! Mr. Sparks pulled it off!Beautiful story telling.

Nicholas Sparks has done it again. Every book that he has written that I have read is just wonderful. The wedding is about a couple that has been married 30 years. However, the husband and wife are drifting apart. They have adult children that have all started their own lives. When one announces she is going to get married the mother works with her to plan a beautiful wedding that she never had After a lot of soul searching the father seeks advice from his father-in-law who spends a lot of time feeding a swan who he thinks is his deceased wife. The father gets caught up in the plans for the wedding and finds a different approach to life is good. The ending is not what you expect at all.

When I first started this book, I wasn't sure about reading a sequel to "The Notebook ", but I loved this book! I guess I'm a hopeless romantic! In my life I've come to realize how hard keeping a marriage going can be. And I know some people give up to easily! Nicholas Sparks is a fantastic author! I won't stop reading his books until he stops writing this hem!

Just received my book in the mail today but sadly this new book isnâ€™t in the best condition. Iâ€™m sure this book wonâ€™t be a disappointment.. all of this authors books are beautifully written.

Wilson Lewis brings home certain truths is life, mainly that too often we put providing money for our wife and children over our presence and time. He forgets his twenty-ninth wedding anniversary and hurts his wife almost beyond repair. He spends a year trying to win back her love while he helps plan his daughter's wedding. This book becomes a real eye opener.

Those who are newly acquainted with the Maestro will gain considerable knowledge of how he evolved in to being one of tango's all-time greatest dancers, performers, philosophers and icons. IMO every man who is serious about becoming a desirable tango partner should read this book, more than once. Gavito's words provide insight into the breadth and depth of tango that are felt but not seen, and must be experienced to understand.

Very well written completely true toward the author's title and Carlos Gavito's life, starting from childhood to the end of his life. A work encouraging the reader to farther explore his style of dance...

Very fascinating biography of one of the greatest tango dancers of our time. I knew Carlos personally, I danced in the same milongas with him, and being able to know the details of his life brought back to me many memories.

Ten dollars for 43 pages of large print is ridiculous. This doesn't even amount to one page for each decade of the country's inhabited existence. It is not particularly well organized or written, but this may be because it is a translation. I have been in the habit of buying most of my books from amazon. I'll have to be more careful in the future.

The book is a fast read. It has a lot of information and is well organized. It does not go too deeply into policies or politics of nations that influenced Cuba's history.

Read this is one sitting and consider it a total waste of time. Focuses entirely on the political background of Cuba, which would not have been bad if it had been in a cohesive format. The writer jumps back and forth between eras, subjects and political alliances, which I found incredibly annoying.

Cuban history was in the making for over 400 years. This book is 43 pages long. Buy at your own risk. Returning.

This is highly condensed summary of Cubaâ€™s history. The books was clearly written in Spanish and later translated, so there are several grammatical errors and wrong translations. For a â€œquick and dirtyâ€ read on Cuba is good.

Great topic and an engrossing narrative! Hey, I'm an electrical engineer, so I like this kind of stuff. I appreciate the author's hard work in creating a fascinating narrative describing the early history of wireless communication.I would have given this book five stars except for a few shortcomings that I think are fixable. I shall list those here:(1) Obviously the author is not an electrical engineer. This is evident by the strange, puzzling descriptions he gives of technical concepts. For example, this head scratcher is from location 187 of the Kindle edition: "[Armstrong] built a device that made it easy for a radio transmitter to summon the invisible waves." My best guess here is that this refers to some sort of electronic oscillator, but I honestly can't tell for sure.Clear, concise, correct high-level descriptions of the various technical concepts mentioned -- descriptions that use standard terms correctly and are reasonably comprehensible to the lay public -- ARE possible. The author ought to work with a sympathetic electrical engineer to get the phrasing right.(2) The non-chronological presentation is a great way to keep the reader's interest: First, a scene with tension and conflict is presented; then (with the reader's interest piqued and before the resolution is presented) the history leading up to that scene is presented. But in the early chapters, in particular, this gets confusing at times. On a re-read, everything seems to make sense. But it would be better if things were clear the first time through, so some rewriting might be needed to effect this.(3) The book has a lot of typos and other editorial errors. These are the errors I noted in today's reading session as I finished the book (Kindle edition):Location 1938: "[And] endless parade of witnesses followed ..." -> "[An] endless ..."Location 2172: "... which could [only] afford to produce only low-budget dreck" -> "... which could afford to produce only ..."Location 2594: "... what could have been [in] the two friends had remained allies." -> "... what could have been [if] the two friends had remained allies."Location 2847: "Johnson had assembled what the [the] New York Times described ..." -> "Johnson had assembled what the New York Times described ..."Location 3275: "With AT&T [was] focused on MCIâ€™s antitrust lawsuit, ..." -> "With AT&T focused on MCIâ€™s antitrust lawsuit, ..."Location 3370: "... began challenge the web of expensive telegraph cables ..." -> "... began [to] challenge the web of expensive telegraph cables ..."There were a lot of errors before location 1938, too. I had observed them in earlier reading sessions, but neglected to note them.The author's discovery of Sarnoff's 1965 speech is a wonderful contribution to the history of technology. I was interested in seeing the original transcript of Sarnoff's speech, but had no luck locating it via Google. The author refers the reader to his evolving web site, battlefortheairwaves.com, for source materials, but neither that speech nor much of anything else was at that site.

I noticed this book because I remember reading Scott Woolley when he was a business technology reporter at Forbes. Boy I am glad I did! Woolley has created a page turner that brings to life the story of this modern communications age. I couldn't put it down. In an age when government seems to have their hand in everything, Woolley's tale is an important read if we are to understand how innovation is to prosper going forward. I recommend this book highly!

This highly readable book is an engaging history of the birth of modern communications, from Marconi wireless to the dawn of the digital age. The central figure is David Sarnoff, the founder of RCA, who originally worked for Marconi and, in what amounted to a farewell address, predicted the onset of the digital age in which we now live.I have one quarrel with is book, and it's an important one. More than half of it deals with the troubled relationship between Sarnoff and inventor Edwin Armstrong, who developed the first amplifier and, ultimately FM radio. Throughout this narrative, the author leads us to believe that Sarnoff undermined Armstrong's FM invention -- a belief Armstrong held that led to his suicide. But in the end, no evidence is presented, and every indication is that Sarnoff did nothing of the sort.With this major objection aside, this book is an important contribution to the history of modern communications, not the least for the revelations about Sarnoff's vision of the digital future, decades before it came to fruition. Sarnoff was a true visionary, seeing what others could not.

Empire of the Air told the story of DeForest, Armstrong and Sarnoff and left the impression that Sarnoff was a Machiavellian creep. This book paints a somewhat different picture and returns at least a degree of humanity to Sarnoff's legacy.And what a legacy it is. Sarnoff did not single-handedly build RCA, NBC, etc. but he was single minded in his promotion of the airwaves as a means of broadcasting both sounds and images, not to mention two-way communications, which he helped revolutionize. He even had a remarkably prescient vision of what became the Internet, way back in 1966.The book is well written and beautifully paced.

An under-water telegraph cable was being laid across theAtlantic for the stock market but Sarnoff saw that it wasn't enough.The ultimate communications medium should be wireless and transmitimages. Those dreams became his goals and, from telegraph totelevision, he was able to work with engineers, scientists andbusinessmen to set the intermediate goals, identify the leading-edgeinventions and inventors who were most likely to succeed, put themall together and then sell it to the world. There are myriadbig, big names to honor in this interesting story where Sarnoffplayed one of the leading roles.

I started reading this last night and I'm SO grateful I got it. I did NOT want the "ho-hum" typical beginner book and quickly found out this one is not like that - yay!! I flipped around in it on my kindle and right off the top found out what I'm doing wrong that makes "some" of my drawings look school-girlish. Wow - great information Mr. Lohan! I'm a self-taught artist, so I gather every piece of information I can find in books and on YouTube. I did not want another book that covered the same old "materials" and the same old "exercises". I have too many of those. The exercises in this book are practical and will help me grow as an artist and look terrific in my artists journal that I keep. I'm going to look to see if Mr Lohan has any other books. He's the best!!!

This is a simple and straightforward book for anyone who wants to learn drawing with pen and ink. Half of the book is in tutorial style with techniques that are easy to follow. It covers the usual types of line hatching and more importantly how to make your illustration more picturesque.The other half of the book is sort of a gallery but rather limited in variety. Still there are plenty of accompanying tips.This book covers mainly drawing architectural stuff, animals, boats, the usual topics cover by pen and ink. The coverage on portrait drawing is limited at best, and the result doesn't seem too good either.It's a quick starter guide recommended for beginners.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. This book contains a few step-by-step demonstrations that break down the build up of a pen drawing stroke by stroke. I made immediate progress on my pen work by following Mr. Lohan's examples. If you can already draw with pencil, then this book will show you how to convert it to a solid pen and ink piece of work.

This book went beyond my exectations. It is very informative, easy to understand and apply the techniques taught. I carry it with me everywhere when I am sketching. I just love it and recommend this book to others starting out in this medium.

I bought this for my 4 year old ring bearer and it's perfect. I believe it could really be used for any age. In the story, the boy's uncle asks him to be the ring bearer. They talk about what he'll wear, what he'll do, how to use his manners, etc. They talk about the importance of a ring bearer. In this story, a frog jumps in the church as the wedding begins and the boy is able to catch the frog and save the wedding.

I bought this book for my 2.5 year old in advance of my brother's wedding, in which my son was the ring bearer. My son loves books, but he had no interest in this at all. I think the illustrations were a little too soft and cutesy and the story was not particularly compelling. Or maybe he was just too young for it. (He will easily sit through "Corduroy" and Dr. Seuss books, though, so...I don't know...)

Cute book! It is pretty substantial in terms of words, perfect for a 5 year old. Any younger and they may not have the patience to sit through it. It explains the things he may have to do before the wedding, things he needs during the wedding, like the pillow. In the end he saves the day by catching a frog and walks down the aisle.

Recently I heard Alan Jacobs, author of "The Book of Common Prayer: A Biography," interviewed on Mars Hill Audio Journal. The whole discussion intrigued me and so I snatched up a copy of this 236 page hardback. I found it easy to read, free of laborious longitudinal loquaciousness, and full of perceptive and instructive material.The first five chapters of â€œThe Book of Common Prayerâ€ take the reader through the environmental history of Thomas Cranmer and his original prayer book, as well as its literary and liturgical ingredients. The flux and flow of its use and disuse, along with its society-shaping consequences are brought forward in broad strokes and embossed swipes. Jacobs has made what could have been a dry labor into something accessible and attention-grabbing.The final two chapters, coupled with the appendix, take the reader around the corner. Here Jacobs shows how the pressure to modernize the prayer book shattered its being a â€œcommonâ€ prayer book. And then how the easy access to proliferations of alternative liturgies through the internet has taken away the â€œbook.â€ In the end, the author leaves us with the sense that Cranmerâ€™s work has, at the least, fallen on very hard times; and at the worst, has now ceased to have more than simply a literary value.I recommend â€œThe Book of Common Prayer: A Biographyâ€ by Alan Jacobs, both for its valuable information into the crafting and history of the prayer book; along with the thoughtful reflection it evokes on the uniqueness of the prayer bookâ€™s liturgical and literary heritage. This would be a great resource for church folk, whether clerical or laity; and it would be a good discussion starter in a Christian book group.

I gladly attend an Anglican church, but I am not Anglican. There are four major reasons I give to those wondering why we shifted from low church evangelicalism to the Anglican church: an intentional theology of the body (and the physical world), a conscious tie to the whole church throughout its history and in the world today, truly keeping primary doctrines primary which translates to giving much space to differ over a variety of non primary doctrines, and a protection against personality cults emerging with respect to the ministers.The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) is integral to the lifeblood of Anglicanism. Its history and use is fascinating. Jacobs tells the story with great skill. Jacobs is a skilled writer, has a nose for the telling anecdote, and does a nice job of giving the overall history of the English Reformation as he tells the story of the BCP.Even if you are not an Anglican (like me) or don't go to an Anglican church (not like me), you will still find this book worthwhile reading indeed!

I feel like I should write three reviews for this work.The first half of the book (four chapters) was delightful. Learned, witty, informative, all the things that I have come to expect from the author. It was one of the best narrative descriptions of the circumstances and details of the creation of the Book of Common Prayer that I have ever read (and I have read several). I would give this part of the book four stars at least.But the rest of the book seemed like it was written by a different author. Less informative, more controversialist (in that the conflict seemed to drive the narrative rather than the Prayer Book itself). This is to be expected to a certain extent, but the author's bias in his analysis seemed apparent (e.g., people who liked the Prayer Book were labeled throughout this portion as "traditionalists" while no such moniker was affixed to those who sought to modernize or deconstruct the Prayer Book). It also seemed like that there was a bit of snark and mockery in the text of this part of the book that diminished the integrity of the analysis, in my opinion. Two stars, at best. The author lost the bubble.I listened to this book on a compact disc, and I cannot really recommend it. The narrator used a particularly affected and "posh" British accent to read portions of the Prayer Book or other "traditionalist" documents, and sometimes slipped in and out of this voice in mid-sentence. Interestingly, he did not use the voice (or did not use it quite as much) when reading other English commentators or critics of the Prayer Book. He particularly seemed to enjoy voicing the texts in the latter portion of the book that mocked traditional adherence to the Prayer Book. His reading voice, when not behaving as noted above, was quite pleasant and readily understandable; I am not sure why he chose to go so "over the top" with portions of his reading. Unfortunately, even when in his "normal" voice, he routinely mispronounced the word "episcopacy," placing the accent on the third rather than the second syllable. Sad. Two stars.Tepidly recommended with the reservations noted above. If you happen to be a pesky "traditionalist," don't expect the latter part of the book to present a reasoned argument in favor of common prayer, and you won't be disappointed.

Well worth the time to read for any serious Anglican and any student of the history of religions and religious practices. Well set out, though my poor lineal memory required me to write a time tine to refer to more frequently than I might like to admit. I wish it delt more with the political and international contexts of its development bit that might require a tome too daunting to take up.. It is already on loan and a consensus commentary has begun.

Having had a few days to reflect on it and collect my thoughts, I am still of two minds regarding Oathbringer, the 3rd massive tome of Brandon Sanderson's epic Stormlight Archive. There is a significant change of focus here, both in terms of characters and storytelling, and while parts of it worked very well for me - extraordinarily well, in fact - others fell flat or just felt tedious.For starters, this volume belongs to Dalinar and Shallan, resigning Kaladin (my favorite character from the first two books) to the background. In Dalinar's case, it turned out to be a surprisingly rewarding change, with extended flashback chapters that expose his darker, far more violent past, and which shed new light on his actions and attitudes over the first two books. We come to see him in an entirely new light, with a contrast between personalities so jarring that it's often painful to watch. Part of that is due to the presence of his wife, a woman whose name and face have been a gaping hole in his memories for so long, and part of that hinges on his pursuit of The Thrill, which made something of a monster of the man. Outside those flashbacks, his story is rather slow, full of politics and philosophical discussions that really weigh down the first half of the book, but they do lead us to some incredible revelations regarding the magic and mythology of the Desolation, the Voidbringers, the Heralds, Honorblades, spren, and more.In Shallan's case, while we get a lot more action and some genuine character development, I found her to be a rather tiresome character. It's a shame, because there is so much potential within her, especially with how her various roles and guises begin to bleed through to one another. Her personality just rubs me the wrong way, and even scenes that should be sweet or amusing come across as bland tripe. It doesn't help that a significant aspect of her character arc is completely undone in this volume, a revelation that I guess we should have seen coming, but which struck me as a cheap way of restoring conflict to her role. It's much-needed conflict, and does make her a little more interesting, but not enough to justify her page count. The only redeeming grace is her spren, Pattern, who never ceases to trigger my amusement and curiosity.Although it is Dalinar and Shallan who dominate the novel, I would also argue this is a story of minor characters taking on major significance. It's hard to talk about that significance without spoiling any aspects of the story, but characters like Renarin, Moash, and others get a chance to shine, and what happens to or around them is sometimes the most fascinating part of the story. Bridge Four has an important role to play here once again as well, but - for me, at least - their scenes just emphasize how far Kaladin is from the center of the story this time out.Oathbringer marks a lull in the series, but it's an important lull. As much as we may chafe against the pacing and the character point of views, we finally get answers . . . and we get a lot of them. So much of what was hidden or hinted at in the first two books is exposed here. We get answers, we get mythology, and we finally get some wider sense of world-building. It is here that the story begins to move away from the epic saga of ruling dynasty, and into the epic saga of a world on the brink of extinction. Having said all that, the last arc of the book is vintage Sanderson and well worth sticking around for. All the book's flaws are forgiven as all the threads come together and we realize, in hindsight, just how and why so many little things were significant. The final three-hundred pages (a novel on its own for most authors) are all climax, and they are some of the finest that Sanderson has ever written.So, not a perfect book, and probably the first time I really noticed the page count in a negative way, but I'm glad I had the time to linger over it, take my time, and digest it along the way. And, of course, I remain just as excited for the next installment.

Sanderson has fallen into the same trap Robert Jordan did: epic fantasy isn't epic because it's long; it's epic because it's intricate, beautiful, and can't be told as a smaller version without losing depth. Unfortunately, this one doesn't meet that criteria. Nearly 1/3rd of this book could have easily been cut without losing any feeling, plot lines, character depth, or world realism. Things would have moved along much nicer, and, quite frankly, it would have been more enjoyable to read.I'm all for description. I don't have any problem whatsoever with a slow plot line...when there's a reason for one. The only reason for one in this particular story was to fit the popular meaning for "epic".Sorry. I love the series and the concept. Write to tell. Write to share. Don't write to fill paper.

Sanderson is one of my favorite writers. Oathbringer was long awaited and I bought is as soon as it became available. I finished it today. There is quite a time lapse between the date of the purchase and today, which is the main reason for my three stars: it took me months to reach the 50% mark and just days to read through the other 50%. The second half of the book exceeded my expectations by far, it is perfect. The first half though, I could have done without. 'Unite them!' Yes, I got that the first time I read it. I typically give each book I am reading 50 to 100 pages before I put is aside because I don't like the style, the plot, the characters or find it simply boring. As it was written by Sanderson, I trudged on ... and on ... until I hit the aforementioned 50%. In short, if I had started on page 500, I would have given the book its five stars. For me, a very disappointing experience.

After having read this book, I needed to let it sit for a couple of days before attempting to write a review. It was just so much! On the one hand I must say that I loved this book. I preordered it months and months ago, and felt like a child at Christmas when it was finally delivered to my phone. Sleeping, working and basically doing anything other than just reading became a bother. Still, having finished I have some mixed feelings. Although we really had some nice plot and character developments it did not quite measure up. In a way a lot of it seemed a bit shallow (donâ€™t kill me) for instance kaladin was a bit forgotten in this book, he was almost degraded to a side character. Shallan had some interesting reveals at the end of last book, but we did not really get a continuation on that, and her development through the book also seemed not quite enough. On the other hand Dalinar was nicely fleshed out, and became more nuanced, but at the same time I was not that lost in his story. You also had a lot of chapters dedicated to side character, and although adding to the overall plot, failed to drag me in. In a way this book might serve as a filler book, starting several threads that will become important in later books. It is supposed to be a 10? Piece series, so I definitely see the need. I also don't quite know how to feel about the crossover from the book warbreaker, since they have different magic systems, and I generally like my books to stay separate. I will not say anything more of that since I don't do spoilers. That said, this is still one of my favorite series at the time being, and Iâ€™m a dedicated fan that will definitely continue reading. Even if there was in my opinion some flaws, the level of writing and storytelling is FAR above most other fantasy currently on the market. Also the ending was quite satisfying so thumbs up for that!
