Creating a company

One year after leaving Integromics, creating a new startup as my next step, it is somehow risky; I’m not so young, I have a family and in this times of crisis I would need some job security. But I have the experience. I like being able to dive into details while having the freedom to think about the big picture. I don’t want to be a cog in the big machine, I want to look at the machine, poke at different parts of it, and help build it into something better. I’d like to try as many things as possible. Sounds like a startup to me.

But it had to be the right idea. And the right team. You don’t half-ass working at a startup, so it has to be for something I will love telling people about. Something that gets me jazzed up. Something that I can believe in, and that I can contribute to. Say hello to Experimental Serendipity.

How could I miss this guy. We used to work in opposite buildings at the Genome Campus during my EBI times, and it is now, via YouTube, Slideshare and the blogsphere that I come to meet him.

Elsevier Grand Challenge – and the winner is…

The Elsevier Grand Challenge came yesterday to an end. An the winner is Reflect, a proposal from my ex-colleagues at EMBL, including my dear friend Evangelos, so congratulations to them. Reflect is very well conceived and perfectly implemented, people are already using it, so I think this was the main reason it was the first option for the jury.

A close second was Coraal, probably my favourite in the last stage of the challenge, with its use of semantic technologies and the Exhibit framework for visualization.

Both proposals are quite complementary to our living document idea, so I hope they release their sofware under an open source license and we can extend our solution.

1st Bioinformatics Meeting in Granada

The first Bioinformatics Meeting in Granada is over. I would say it was quite interesting, and a success given ths short time it took to prepare. I hope we can repeat it in the future. I will make a more extense comment in the near future, but you can check the presentations (sorry, in spanish only).

Andalucía cuenta actualmente con 103 empresas con actividad biotecnológica que han creado más de 2.800 empleos y generado una facturación superior a los 586 millones de euros. Asimismo, la investigación de excelencia se materializa en 120 grupos de investigación especializados en biotecnología agroalimentaria, 270 en Ciencias y Tecnologías de la Salud y 170 en Ciencia de la Vida.

La concentración de empresas del sector biotecnológico, una investigación científica destacada junto con parques científicos y tecnológicos son las tres piezas claves que han llevado a la Agencia de Innovación y Desarrollo de Andalucía IDEA a impusar la creación del Clúster Biotecnológico de Andalucía, en el que Granada y el Parque Tecnológico de Salud juegan un papel fundamental.

La bioinformática desempeña un papel clave en diversas áreas, tales como la genómica funcional, la genómica estructural y la proteómica, y forma un componente clave en el sector de la biotecnología y la farmacéutica.

Es por ello, que queremos organizar una Jornada de intercambio de conocimiento sobre bioinformática para tratar de acercar a los distintos grupos de investigación y las empresas de Granada que utilizan o desarrollan software y herramientas bioinformáticas y explorar posibles sinergias entre los mismos.

At nodalpoint such a list is continuosly updated. Abhishek Tiwari also created another list with more programming oriented blogs.

Yesterday I took part in the first Open source workshop in the Biomedical Research Center in Granada. It was a great event. About 100 researches attended, so we were quite surprised.
