<p>Biomass CHP (Combined Heat and Power) is a way of generating both heat and power from Biomass.</p>
<p>Biomass is a renewable energy created from recently living material, such as plants, waste wood or animal fats.</p>
<p>As it is a renewable energy, Biomass won&#8217;t run out, unlike fossil fuels, and is not weather dependant like wind or solar power nor water dependent like tidal power or dams.</p>
<p>Using wood as fuel is one of the earliest forms of biomass. The burning wood is used to create heat. In a biomass CHP installation the steam created is used to drive a turbine, which then generates electricity.</p>
<p>This form of generating power is up to 70% efficient, compared to approximately 40% for coal and gas fired power stations.</p>
<p>This increased efficiency is because the heat created during the power generation process is used, rather than wasted like it is in a fossil fuelled power station. There are also fewer emissions created than in a fossil fuelled power station.<br />

CHP can be useful when a constant and reliable supply of electricity is needed all day every day. Hospitals, hotels and computer data centres are prime examples.</p>
<p>Other industries can make use of biomass, and it&#8217;s very cost effective for buildings that use a lot of power and heat, such as factories and refineries. Paper and food processing plants can also benefit from this technology in terms of saving money, and the environment by being more efficient.</p>
<p>Using this technology, the company or individual relies less on the national electricity supply. As more people follow suite, there is a reduced demand for electricity, which in turn will reduce the amount of fossil fuels used.</p>
<p>Because this is a stable and secure way to create heat and power, Biomass CHP is suitable for countries that suffer from frequent power outages or have to import all their fossil fuels.</p>
<p>The carbon footprint of the country and the individual business can be reduced, as there may be enough organic materials grown or harvested nearby. This helps to decrease the storage and transport costs.</p>
<p>Biomass can be used in domestic applications too. Communities can share resources such as heat and electricity between many houses.</p>
<p>Houses that are connected to this system won&#8217;t need boilers, as the water is transported using a grid of hot water pipes. Some of the electricity generated is used to keep the pipes heated, and the excess can be transferred to the national electricity supply.</p>

<p>As fuel prices propel upward around the world and further concerns mount over global warming, many researchers and policy makers are looking toward renewable energy sources.</p>
<p>For the most part, power made from natural sources is low-impact because biological material can be quickly restored through natural processes.</p>
<p>Large markets are starting to shy away from fossil fuels and embrace more responsible biomass alternatives. The field is gaining momentum and there are thousands of newly viable ways to create planet-friendly energy.</p>
<p><strong>What is biomass energy?</strong></p>
<p>Even though it is only now gaining credibility and market share, biofuel is not new. In fact, early humans created biomass energy by burning wood. Biomass is any biological material that can be used for industrial purposes.</p>
<p>Coal and petroleum are not considered biomass because they were transformed from organic material into fossils by geological means. When something organic, like wood, is used as fuel, the heat it generates is biomass energy.<br />

<strong>The State of Biomass Energy</strong></p>
<p>Continuing instability in global oil markets and the predicted depletion of fossil fuels has created a new interest in biomass energy in recent years. The concept of biofuel is not a new one, but it has always been dismissed in the past as less than cost effective.</p>
<p>The rising cost of gasoline and heating fuel has narrowed the price gap. In light of these record prices, adding biomass infrastructure has become more attractive. Proponents of biofuel argue that wider distribution will eventually lead to lower prices.</p>
<p>One of the ripest areas for biomass energy development is the personal vehicle market. The United States is facing record gas prices, and many citizens are having to change their travel habits. Biofuels such of bioethanol, biodiesel, and vegetable oil can all be used to power specially outfitted vehicles.</p>
<p><strong>The Popularity of Bioethanol</strong></p>
<p>Ethanol, in particular, is now used throughout the world to supplemental gasoline usage. Ethyl alcohol can be synthesized from a number of common crops like sugar or corn.</p>
<p>Most consumer cars in the United States can use fuel that is 10% ethanol. Flexible-fuel vehicles have engine modifications that allow them to use much high concentrations of the fuel.</p>
<p>Brazil, the second largest producer of ethanol in the world, is said to be the first sustainable ethanol economy. The country is well-known for its sugarcane production and uses its large reserves to produce fuel.</p>
<p>E20 (20% ethanol and 80% gasoline) gas mixtures are mandated throughout the country. This system has allowed Brazilians to grow, process, buy fuel, and improve their economy while slowly reducing their dependence on other countries.</p>
<p>The United States uses its significant corn crops to secure its place as the largest worldwide ethanol producer. Most state governments require the usage of E10 in order to reduce pollution and replace the need for MTBE in gasoline.</p>
<p>The use of ethanol is still controversial. Some argue that it raised the cost of fuel mixtures and that extra harvest and production energy negate any environmental benefit. They also cite the tendency of ethanol speculation to increase the price of staple crops and thus taking food away from lower classes priced out of the market.</p>
<p><strong>Producing Heat and Electricity</strong></p>
<p>Biomass fuels are not only in use on the highway. One of the most popular remedies for the rising cost of heating fuel over the past few years have been pellet stoves. These units provide heat to spaces by burning pellets made from compressed sawdust.</p>
<p>They are highly efficient and provide a cheap alternative to furnaces and electric systems. Other renewable byproducts from industrial processes can also be burned off. This biomass and other biofuels can be used to produce electricity, but no large scale proof-of-concept has yet been implemented.</p>
<p><strong>The Future of Biomass Energy</strong></p>
<p>As fossil fuels rapidly deplete, governments around the world have recognized the need to harness biomass energy. Since it can be used in existing car engines without minimal changes, biofuels are currently a popular option to replace gasoline and diesel.</p>
<p>Solar, hydroelectric, wind, nuclear, and geothermal energy options still outpace biomass with regard to producing electricity, but researchers hope that improved infrastructure will close the gap.</p>
<p>In the rush to find a new way to power the world, scientists are reviewing all available options. Biomass is attractive because it is completely renewable and collection is easy.</p>
<p>As research continues, the ways to produce and use biomass energy continue to grow. It is unlikely that it will be the ultimate solution to current energy problems, but it will certainly play a part in the coming transition from fossil fuels.[]</p>

<p>It is easy to make your own fuel at home.  You need a few simple supplies, all of which are readily available at your hardware stores.  Gather up 1 liter of vegetable oil, antifreeze, and lye.</p>
<p>The equipment you need to make this clean burning fuel is a blender, scales, a few plastic containers, funnels, and empty water bottles, duct tape, and a thermometer.</p>
<p>Make sure that all of the equipment you plan to use if cleaned and thoroughly dried.</p>
<p>All equipment should be clean and dry and you should make sure that you are careful as you handle the ingredients.  Start by measuring out 200 ml of antifreeze and placing it in a half liter plastic container through a funnel.  Quickly mix in the lye.   Lye absorbs water rapidly, so when you mix it with the antifreeze, work fast.</p>
<p>If you work too slowly, it will absorb water from the air and that can interfere with the biodiesel reaction.  You can mix the two ingredients by covering the container and shaking the contents rapidly until it starts to react by getting warm.<br />
<span id="more-38"></span><br />
The lye will rapidly dissolve into the antifreeze, foaming up as sodium methoxide.  As soon as the sodium methoxide is clear with no particles floating in it, it is ready for the next step.</p>
<p>Using a blender, (one you dont plan to use for food preparation) mix the vegetable oil that has been heated to 130 degrees Fahrenheit with the sodium methoxide.  Make sure that the cover is on tightly and blend the mixture on a low speed for twenty minutes.</p>
<p>As soon as you are done processing the mixture, remove it from the blender.  Using a funnel, pour it into an empty, 2 liter water or soda bottle and cap tightly.  Allow the contents to settle for at least 8 hours.</p>
<p>As the product settles, a dark colored layer will form at the bottom of the bottle with a distinct line of separation from the pale liquid at the top of the bottle.  The dark layer is glycerin, and the top layer is biodiesel. Carefully remove the biodiesel to a glass jar or clean water bottle.</p>
<p>Prepare two wash bottles by piercing a small hole in the corner of two cleaned water bottles and covering the holes with duct tape.  Pour the biodiesel into one of the wash bottles and add a half liter of fresh water.  Screw the cap on tightly.</p>
<p>Turn the bottle on its side and roll it about with your hands until oil and water are well mixed and homogenous. Drain the water from the biodiesel by removing the duct tape and letting it drain out. Make sure that when the water has drained out, you block the hole so that the biodiesel remains.</p>
<p>Once the biodiesel is clear, the process is complete and it is ready to use.  It can take up tot a week for the biodiesel to clear and ready to use.[]</p>

<p>There is no question that alternative fuel sources must be found if we are going to reduce our dependence on oil, lower transportation costs, and stop damaging the environment.</p>
<p>Algae biodiesel is a fuel alternative that has many people hopeful for these changes as it creates fuel efficiently without displacing food crops, damaging the environment, and it reduces our dependence on oil.</p>
<p>Corn, soybeans, and waste oil are all known sources for fuel alternatives, but food crops used to produce fuel oil have proven to be counterproductive and waste oils are finite in supply. Corn and soybeans used for making fuel take away from food that would have otherwise gone to consumers.</p>
<p>This creates the potential to raise food prices. Food crops used to make fuel are also not as efficient as algae. It takes an acre of soybeans to make about 50 gallons of oil and an acre of corn to make only about 20 gallons of oil. In contrast, an acre of algae will produce about 10,000 gallons of oil over the course of a year.</p>
<p>This difference is one of the main reasons that algae biodiesel has gained popularity in the race to produce alternative fuels but there are many other reasons why many people are considering it.<br />
<span id="more-27"></span><br />
The economical nature of algae biodiesel means that 15000 square miles of algae farms would be able to produce enough biodiesel to power all of the cars, trucks, and other gas powered transportation in the US. If the US began farming operations on this scale we would be able to almost entirely eliminate our need for oil and fossil fuels.</p>
<p>This farming figure may seem like a lot, but is only 300 square miles of algae farms per state, and larger states could easily spare more than 300 square miles for such farms.</p>
<p>The environmental impact of algae biodiesel is nothing compared to fossil fuel use which means that we would also be helping to solve global warming and other climate issues caused by fossil fuels.</p>
<p>Algae biodiesel is also easy to produce compared with other types of biodiesel that require filtering and titrating. It is even possible to produce algae biodiesel at home which means that consumers would be able to produce their own fuel and reduce their individual need for oil.</p>
<p>Individuals can take control of their own fuel needs and take some of the power away from big energy suppliers. This possibility means that energy costs could potentially fall even form the big producers.</p>
<p>Making algae biodiesel at home is not easy, however, but it is possible and very economical. Using algae to create fuel means that there is no waste and consumers can stop depending on oil with its quickly rising prices for their fuel needs.</p>
<p>Every consumer has been impacted by the sharp rise in oil prices and if they continue to soar many people will end up not being able to afford their daily commute or will not be able to afford other necessities such as food in order to continue driving.</p>
<p>There is no doubt that alternative fuel sources must be developed and quickly; ones that are sustainable and affordable for consumers.[]</p>

<p>Biodiesel blends are becoming more essential to the every day operation of farm vehicles and machinery, trucks, buses and boats both big and small.</p>
<p>This is because there are a slew of advantages to using one of the designer fuel biodiesel fuel blends on the market.</p>
<p>First of all any substance that helps reduce the U.S. dependence on foreign fossil fuel oils can&#8217;t help but be a good thing. This is particularly true in the United States, which has resorted to a fair amount of aggression to take control of the world&#8217;s oil supplies.</p>
<p>If you cut your gasoline or diesel with a biodiesel fuel blend such as fuel boost you are cutting down on your need to use foreign fossil fuels and creating jobs for Americans who grow the soy and canola that is used to make biodiesel blends.</p>
<p>Biodiesel can be used in a blend in many different kinds of existing diesel engines without modification. Biodiesel burns substantially cleaner than petroleum based diesel fuel in both vehicles and machinery.<br />

?Biodiesel is carbon-neutral which means that its contribution to global warming is negligible compared to petroleum products. In addition to displacing imported petroleum, biodiesel blends reduce air pollution and greenhouse gases. A 1998 biodiesel lifecycle study, jointly sponsored by the U.S.</p>
<p>Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, concluded biodiesel reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 78 percent (compared to petroleum diesel.) The CO? released into the atmosphere when biodiesel burned is recycled by plants, which produce more oxygen.</p>
<p>Biodiesel is a lubricant that reduces wear and tear on engine parts by almost one half! In fact it is already added to many petrodiesel fuels to increase the lubricity of diesel engines and fuel systems. It is also a solvent that can help keep your system clean.</p>
<p>Sick of seeing black smoke flume out from your exhaust. Biodiesel burns cleaner and produces less smoke. The smoke it does produce is white as opposed to back. The exhaust from biodiesel also smells better. People say it reminds them of the smell of popcorn or French fries.</p>
<p>Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel to have fully completed the health effects testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments as biodiesel produces less sulfur emissions than regular diesel.</p>
<p>However biodiesel is still not that widely available commercially. Still the consumption of biodiesel has greatly increased since 2001. This is why so many people are ordering their own car conversion &#8216;grease car&#8217; kits or home brewing systems to make their own biodiesel.</p>
<p>If you have an older machine, then there is a chance that using a biodiesel fuel additive such as FuelBoost could have the effect of cleaning or thinning old petroleum from the walls of your fuel lines and clog up your engine.</p>
<p>Biodiesel in a pure form (such as B100) has a high gelling point compared to other fuels. This means that it thickens when the temperature falls below the freezing point (32 F).</p>
<p>However there are solutions to this such as using a blend of biodiesel called B20. B20 is a blend of 20% biodiesel and 80% regular diesel and has a gelling point of 15 degrees F. Adding a biodiesel additive such as Fuel Boost to the blend also lowers the gel point even further so that your fuel lines don&#8217;t clog up in the winter.[]</p>

<p>With the current damage being done to the environment it only makes sense that we need a better way to operate vehicles without the use of fossil fuels.</p>
<p>It is always a good idea to take a look of all the possible options available to us in order to break down the advantages and disadvantages of using each of them.</p>
<p>Biodiesel is just another great alternative that might allow drivers to turn their backs on regular diesel and other forms of fossil fuels.</p>
<p>The first step in making a real change is to learn as much as you can about the alternatives. Getting informed and educated is the first step in understanding the problem and solving it.</p>
<p>Biodiesel is an all natural fuel source. Biodiesel does not come from fossil fuels in any way. Instead, it is derived from natural sources like vegetable oil or animal fat. It can be burned just as it is on its own or it can be blended with regular diesel in order to make it cleaner burning.<br />

<p>Studies have shown that biodiesel performs quite well in comparison to regular fossil fuels in terms of things like horsepower and driving ability. Biodiesel also tends to be more efficient than other natural resources like ethanol. Since it is safe to transport as well as to store and it works well, there really is no reason not to be using it.</p>
<p>Of course, there are some disadvantages to using biodiesel like with any other resource. It does cost money to transport and store it. Also, a lot of land space is required for the production of biodiesel. Some places just do not have enough land space to spare.</p>
<p>Another disadvantage might be the fact the biodiesel does not work as well in places with colder temperatures. This might limit consumers that live in colder locations.</p>

<p>Biomass is matter normally thought of as garbage or waste.</p>
<p>The majority of it consists of old or dead trees, tree branches, leaves, yard clippings, old crops, wood chips, bark as well as tires or other rubber products - and even livestock manure.</p>
<p>All of these elements can be combined to produce Biomass Energy through the process of burning or heating the materials to release the stored solar energy within.</p>
<p>Biomass Energy is a very safe, Eco-friendly power source that can be replenished indefinitely as long as the energy necessary for the process is not greater than the energy that is actually released from the biomass (a common myth).</p>
<p>Throughout history, biomass has been a major source of energy; this has been practiced for millennia by man in a simple manner: by burning it to produce heat. Biomass Energy is still created by this method to this day.</p>
<p>The heat from Biomass Energy can be used directly, for heating, cooking, and industrial processes. Consequently, things that most people would consider to be trash or garbage, can actually be used to produce heat, electricity, or even fuel.<br />

Most people aren&#8217;t aware of the fact, but biomass is commonly used. For example, California produces more than 60 million tons of biomass each year, of which a total of 5 million tons is converted into Biomass Energy for electricity.</p>
<p>This Biomass Energy comes from the lumber mill and urban wood wastes, forest and agricultural resides and other feed stocks to help produce a renewable energy source.</p>
<p>There multiple ways to use biomass to create energy:</p>
<ul>
<li>When plant matter is heated (but not burned), it breaks down into various forms such as gases, liquids and solids. These can be processed and refined into useful fuels. These fuels can either be burned in gas turbines to create electricity, or be stored in fuel cells and later used to create electricity when necessary. The advantage of this process is that very few emissions are created - and at times none.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>By using biochemical methods, equivalent to fermentation, it&#8217;s possible to convert biomass into a combustible fuel. This fuel can be burned to create power and heat.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Biomass oil, such as soybean and canola oil, can be chemically converted to liquid fuel that can be used to create &#8220;biodiesel&#8221; fuel for trucks.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Biomass can also be used to create compost, which is decayed plant or food products mixed together in a pile and spread out to help plants grow.</li>
</ul>
<p>No matter what method we use the outcome is the same, a cleaner, safer energy. Each improvement in the Biomass conversion technology means we&#8217;re that much closer to a cleaner environment and a safer energy source for everybody.[]</p>

<p>Australias largest energy retailer, AGL, is putting its energy into innovative and sustainable renewable energy projects, in an effort to minimising the effects of climate change.</p>
<p>Included in its suite of 29 renewable energy assets that it owns or operates, is Suncoast Gold Macadamias in Gympie, Southeast Queensland, which is Australias first waste-to-energy (biomass) renewable cogeneration project. Cogeneration is generation of both electricity and useful heat that can be used onsite for good use.</p>
<p>What is Biomass? Biomass is all matter that can be used as fuel for industrial production. It can also include biodegradable wastes that can be burnt as fuel.</p>
<p>How is Biomass energy created? Biomass can be thought of as storage of solar energy in chemical form. It can be combusted to generate heat and then subsequently converted into other forms of energy.</p>
<p>How do we create energy from Macadamias? Creating energy from a waste product like the macadamia nut shells involves the following process:  Nut shells are burnt in a fire boiler, which creates steam  Some of the steam is used to dry the macadamia nuts  The majority of the steam is used to drive a turbine to generate clean, renewable electricity  About 40% of the electricity is sent to the national power grid as GreenPower  About 60% goes to the customer.</p>

What this means for the environment The macadamia plant produces enough energy from the macadamia nut shells to power the companys entire manufacturing and processing activity, as well as about 250 Queensland homes.</p>
<p>This innovative waste-to-energy project cuts Australias greenhouse gas emissions by around 2,500 tonnes per annum - equivalent to taking about 650 cars off the road each year. It has also solved the problem of what to do with the 5,000 tonnes of macadamia shells, enough to fill three Olympic-sized swimming pools, that Suncoast Gold Macadamias processes each year.</p>
<p>Suncoast Gold, which exports Australias largest native agricultural crop to more than 20 countries including Japan, Europe and the US, has had its efficiency significantly boosted by the provision of electricity, heat and steam. It has also enhanced its green credentials in the European and Asian markets where consumers are extremely environmentally aware.</p>
<p>By 2010, more than 150 growers throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales are expected to supply Suncoast Gold with about 10,000 tonnes of macadamia nuts each year, doubling the Gympie facilitys output.</p>
<p>AGLs Asset Manager Neil Cooke says the innovative plant has achieved several firsts. Its the first of its kind in the world, he said. It also has the largest macadamia shell silo (400 tonne capacity, 18 metres high and 10 metres in diameter) in the world and the boiler is showing that it is possible to achieve consistent performance from a renewable energy plant operated on shells.</p>
<p>AGL is one of Australias leading integrated energy companies and the only Australian energy producer with a full suite of renewable generation, providing natural gas and electricity to over 3.2 million customers more than six million Australians.</p>
<p>Other innovative renewable energy assets AGL owns or operates include the ISIS Central Sugar Mill facility in Childers, Queensland, which is AGLs first renewable cogeneration project to produce energy from sugar cane by-product (bagasse). []</p>

<p>Oil is used in large amount and it is extracted from the seeds. In these projects solvents like oil, methanol, and glycerol are extensively used.</p>
<p>The chemical reaction of the solvents and the materials used can be future summarized in the following manner:- Oil + 3 Methanol [using NaOH or KOH catalyst] = 3 Biodiesel (Methyl Ester) + Glycerol. The main objective behind the research was to study the transesterification of the oil extracted to the Biodisel. []</p>
