With a sprint like this, quite a long sprint and into a head-wind, my strength came through.”

The win keeps Endura Racing top with maximum points from three rounds, behind the battle for second tightened up with Rapha Condor Sharp, Team Raleigh – GAC, Team UK Youth and Node4 – Giordana Racing all split by just two points with eight rounds still to run.

In the Boardman Bikes Sprints competition Marcel Six bounced back from a poor showing in Durham to take a clean sweep of all three ‘hot spot’ sprints. That wasn’t enough though to retake the yellow Boardman Bikes jersey, which instead went to Team Raleigh – GAC’s Bernard Sulzberger, who has a healthy seven point lead.

“It was very tough tonight because of the hairpins. I was a bit worried because Marcel got the first sprint so I had to be up there for the next few. It was very tight, I think I only managed to win it by one point,” said Sulzberger afterwards.

“It’s good to get the jersey for the team. We’ve got Thursday and Friday to come so I am going to try my best and keep the jersey.”

Prior to the action in Round Three, Oxford University had taken on Cambridge University in a special varsity Tour Series race around the St Giles circuit.

There wasn’t to be a home victory however, with Wojciech Szlachta taking an impressive individual win, helping the light blues of Cambridge to victory in an event that is hoped will become an annual fixture of The Halfords Tour Series.

The Halfords Tour Series, Round Three, Oxford, Defending champion Michele Scarponi (Lampre) has been quiet but lurks in sixth at 1:36.

Italian Matteo Rabottini of the Farnese Vini team still holds the blue mountains jersey after his exploits in stage 15; Britian’s Mark Cavendish (Team Sky) proudly wears the red jersey and pledges to continue on towards Milan while another Sky rider, Colombian youngster Sergio Henao, is in the white jersey as best young rider.

44 km in, the break of the day forms. Branislau Samoilau (Movistar), Matteo Rabottini (Farnese Vini), Kevin Seeldraeyers (Astana), Jose Serpa (Androni Giocattoli) and Matteo Montaguti (Ag2r-La Mondiale) open up 35 seconds on the peloton.

Within 17 km, the break has opened a gap of 4’20″. As the break makes its way up the Cat.2 Passo di Valparola, Samoilau leads the quintet up the climb. The gap briefly approached six minutes at the base of the climb, but the peloton ratchets up the pace and brings the gap back down to 4’17″ by the time they reach the summit.

With seven Euskaltel riders pulling the peloton along , the gap comes down to 3’40″ in advance of the Category 1 Passo Duran. The gap dwindles to 2’40″.

As Liquigas moves to the front of the peloton to take up the chase, the gap continues to fall, now to 1’50″. Euskaltel’s Mikel Nieve and Amets Txurruka make an attack. Txurruka falls back as Nieve powers ahead.

Nieve’s move looks to be holding as he pulls away from the peloton and edges closer to the break.

Indeed, Nieve catches some of the break, but Kevin Seeldraeyers has attacked the break and leads by 36 on the approach to the Category 2 Forcella Staulanza.

Nieve’s trio briefly catches Seeldraeyers before he once again surges to grab some points at the intermediate sprint at Zoldo Alto.

With about 40km remaining, Seeldraeyers continues to steam ahead as the rest of the break has decided to sit up and wait for the peloton. Liquigas, Lampre, Garmin, Astana, Katusha and Sky lead the largest chasing group.

Over the top of the Forcella Staulanza it’s Failli, followed by Caruso and Capecchi. Liquigas is working their way down the descent, doing their best to position and protect team leader Ivan Basso.

The group at the front continues to dwindle on the Passo Giau ascent. Capecchi was setting the pace for Basso while Hesjedal, Henao and Pozzovivo were staying close. With 25km to go, the lead was Basso, Scarponi, Hesjedal, Rodriguez, Pozzovivi and Uran.

Hesjedal makes an attack, but is quickly marked by Basso. As they near the summit, it was Scarponi leading Hesjedal, Rodriguez, Pozzovivo, Basso and Uran.

An attack from Pozzovivo shreds the lead group a little more as Uran falls off the pace.

Over the summit, it’s Hesjedal leading the descent, while Uran and Scarponi try to chase back on. Pink jersey Rodriguez and Basso chase just behind.

With 11km to go, Rodriguez has made his way up to Hesjedal, while Basso and Pozzovivo continue to chase. Scarponi looks to have pulled up a bit and allows Uran to go by.

You wouldn’t know it from the course profile, but there is actually a small climb into Pocol before the final descent into Cortina d’Ampezzo. The four leaders are back together. Basso drives the pace, with Hesjedal, Rodriguez and Pozzovivo sitting on his wheel. Scarponi was another 10 seconds back after suffering with cramp, while Gadret and Nieve are riding 1:20 back, ahead of a larger chasing group that included Cunego.

Uran catches the lead group as Scarponi continues to claw his way back.

With just 3km to go, Hesjedahl has moved to the front. With no time bonuses on the line, Basso probably figures that who crosses first won’t make a big difference. Scarponi had re-connected.

Okay, I was wrong. Basso attacks. It doesn’t last though. Everyone is watching each other quite carefully.

Scarponi opens the sprint in the final meters, but its Rodriguez for the win with Basso second and Hesjedal third.

Stage 17 Brief In a neck-and-neck final he showed the most spectacular and clean tricks within anextraordinary high level rider line up. Have a look at the youtube web clip with an interview of Andreu and the biggest tricks of the competition: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=6lQWxyisi8U

Thousands of spectators came to the Red Bull Berg Line Event in Winterberg to root for the strong and encouraging rider line up on the extremely demanding slopestyle. When Andreu Lacondeguy heard that the course offers some of the biggest jumps ever, it was clear that he had to participate at the Red Bull Berg Line. Andreu is well known for his passion to massive jumps. His unique and big airtime-orientated style landed him in first place. It was his second run that catapulted him all the way to the top. He started with a x-up at the 7 meter drop, double backflip 12 meter dirt jump, followed by a 360-flatspin, into another 360 onto the step up, backflip at the step down, tailwhip over boner log and a table top at the quarter. With a run like that, the top of the podium was well deserved and the judges had no doubt scoring him with the highest points of the day. His double backflip brought him also 1st place for the best trick. But instead of taking the victory for himself he decided to catch Sam Reynolds (who did the same trick), pulled him up to the podium and shared the award with him.

Andreu’s Statement: “I heard about the Red Bull Berg Line comp and that the jumps will be huge! That’s exactly my thing! I loved the course and really wanted to win. I crashed in my first final run and Reynolds set the benchmark real high, so I had to go for it in my second run. I said to myself: ‘double or nothing’! And it worked out! I am happy also for my German bike sponsor YT Industries. It was my first big win on the new bike at the biggest German freeride event and they saw me winning!”

Andreu has been quite busy in the last weeks since his season started with two film shootings that will be released in the next few months. This week the Catalan flies to Utah to film for the new Freeride Entertainment movie called „Where the trail ends“.

Be wound up to see Andreu soon back at the next contests, whether it will be Les Deux Alpes, Whistler or Rampage – Andreu is on fire for 2012!

In order to enjoy again Andreu’s top <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.bikeworldnews.com/tag/performance/" title="Posts tagged with Bewley, 24, will represent New Zealand in the team pursuit in the 2012 London Olympics before switching his focus 100% to a road career. He raced for two years with RadioShack and spent the first half of this season with Pure Black Racing.

“I’m excited to be part of an Australian team,” said Bewley. “I’m not Australian of course, but New Zealand and Australia are pretty united when it comes to sport unless we’re competing against one another. Even then, it’s a friendly rivalry. I’m really happy to be part of a team from the Southern Hemisphere that’s racing in Europe.”

Bewley makes his debut with the team at Bayern Rundfahrt in Germany on May 23, 2012. He returns to the track in the build-up to the Olympics before rejoining the team for additional road racing in the fall.

“We weren’t able to sign Sam until Robbie retired because we were maxed out on numbers,” explained Sports Director Matt White. “This ended up working out well for both Sam and the team because of Sam’s track schedule. He has a lot of potential on the road when he’s able to fully concentrate on road racing, and we’re looking forward to helping him develop his complete potential. We’ve signed him for this and the next season, and while we won’t see him much this year, he’ll be with us full-time on the road in 2013.”

Bewley calls a bronze medal in the team pursuit at the 2008 Beijing Olympics his career highlight.

“Most of my highlights are on the track as that’s where I have put my energy,” Bewley said. “The Olympic medal in Beijing stands out the most. I haven’t gotten a real highlight on the road yet, but I’m happy to join a team where I think that’s a real possibility ”

Without much road racing in his legs, Bewley expects Bayern Rundfahrt to be a personal challenge.

“It’s going to be a shock to the system racing at this level,” he said. “I’m here to get some racing in my legs and make a good impression to my new teammates and staff. I’ll work as hard as I can for the team. We have some strong riders here on the hunt for stage wins. I’ll support their goals wherever I can.”

<a rel="nofollow"
