Stocks started the week with a bang, registering a major distribution day on Monday and modest follow through to the downside on Tuesday. This has brought some of the short term indicators to oversold readings for stocks. While the action so far this week has been painful for the bulls, the S and P is coming close to a Golden Cross of the 50 and 200 day sma's. If we can bounce back a bit this week, we may see this cross soon. The S and P 500, which surged 40 percent from a 12-year low in March through last week, lost 1.3 percent to 911.97. The index slid 2.4 percent yesterday, the largest since May 13. The DJIA fell 107.46 points, or 1.3 percent, to 8,504.67. U.S. stocks put in an uninspiring rally for the first time in three sessions as technology stocks spurred gains in the nasdaq index. The dollar fell against the euro as gold, oil and Treasury notes put in gains. The Standard and Poors 500 Index added 0.4 percent to end at 942.43. Bulls would have liked to see this close above 944 on heavier volume which is what makes today uninspiring. The Dow slipped 1.43 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to 8,763.06. 50 day SMA crosses above the 100 day SMA on the SPY.

The 50 day simple moving average has now crossed above the 100 day simple moving average on the SPY. This is the first time this has happened since the reverse bear cross back in July of 08. This is an interesting development and if SPX holds 875 from here forward - it's time to kiss those double and triple inverse ETF's to the curb. SPY

The Stock Market Needs Rest.

Finally it looks like the time has come for the market to take some much needed rest after this massive rally we have witnessed for the past 9 weeks. Many stocks are very extended and at this time we have moved to 90% cash and are waiting for new bases to build. Aggressive traders can look for opportunities to get short on some of the stocks that are looking most vulnerable. If we can see SPY get some support around the 85 area, long positions may look prudent again. Watching for now.
