Then help support Bethlehem Center of Charlotte’s Kids2Camp program! For over 50 years, Bethlehem Center has sent kids in need away to Summer Camp. This year is no different! Our goal is to raise donations to send 70 kids, ages 7-12 years, to either Camp Tekoa in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina or SeeWee Coastal Retreat Center near Charleston, SC. Jared Keaton, our Associate Executive Director explains, "Our Kids2Camp program not only exposes kids to the “great outdoors” it helps build the elements of a successful Christ-centered life: faith, fellowship, hope, and love."

Right now, we are thrilled to be halfway to our goal of raising $16,000 to send all 70 of our children to camp. How much does it cost for a child to be away for four days of personal growth and great food? A total of $230 which is less than $60 per day!

But what does Summer Camp really mean to these at-risk youth? Well, we asked our kids and here is what they said:

"What I learned at camp was to be friendly and to be at peace with God. Camp was a fun experience for me. I would really like to go back, because we went camping and I got to be closer to God." -TaDarian G.

"What I’ve learned going to camp is to be yourself, the most important thing. Make a decision that you think is right. Be a leader, never follow. If you lead other kids would want to do the same." -TaSia G.

For more information on our Kids2Camp program, contact Renee Bromfield, Director of Community Relations at rbromfield@bethlehemcenter.org or by phone at 704-371-7404.Dalliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13581658718403924057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8068662143460536335.post-36942768905206603302011-03-28T08:59:00.000-07:002011-03-28T09:10:24.423-07:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 230px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXVUMpxvWZbZU5RT0hleiKA1aJgV4y29hXn318wwauG4azzWWRvh-o35BiumyM_rzaAsL_fG51hV1ORI6xCWCQ7c1t8rztJTUGX0DoQWUqv8bfxvHT3KbrUgz5MoH-HMo1zdgLa76XsYc/s320/Tamisha.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589162744714570418" />
Bethlehem Center of Charlotte welcomes Ms. Tamisha Williams as the new Site Administrator for the After-school program at Bethlehem Center. It was a perfect day for it. At least, the best you can get in a Carolina summer. It was approximately 80 degrees, sunny, with shade surrounding the courts for on-looking parents.

Teens were split into two groups for some friendly competition. The game? See which line can hit the most balls "in" on the other side.

Next stop was elimination fences. It's kind of like playing doubles, except there is a line of people waiting for you to mess up so they can take your place. Hit the ball out or into the net? Go to the back of the line. Miss the ball completely? Elimination. Of course there was some (friendly) trash talk as to who would get out first. The one who beat us all? A 6-year-old who stood no more than 4 feet tall.

The Bethlehem Center incorporates healthy living and exercise into all of our programs. With childhood obesity on the rise, we want to make sure our kids are out and about playing sports (or at least, in the auditorium dancing) as much as possible. Of course, the staff favorite event is the staff vs. kids basketball tournament, where at least for the last 3 years the kids have beaten the staff by at least 20 points. Maybe this year...

If you have a special sporting skill that you'd like to share with the kids or teens, let us know! We'd love to have you!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8068662143460536335.post-5725358331864401422010-06-22T10:17:00.000-07:002010-06-22T10:31:12.488-07:005-Star RatingsAt many child care centers, the goal of licensing is to simply stay operational.

But not here.

Our goal is to achieve 5-star ratings at all of our locations. A lofty goal? Absolutely! For those of you reading this who have experience within the child care community, you know that achieving a 3 or 4 star rating will get you lots of business. But 5 star? That means the children we are serving here through free programs are getting the best of the best quality!

At BC Main, we bumped up from a 4-star to a 5-star rating 2 years ago, achieving 13 out of 15 points.

But for two of our sites, "bumping up" from a 4-star wasn't good enough... they wanted to achieve the 5-star right away! We had prayed for no rain, since there were very few projects to be done inside, and instead were greeted with the reverse: 85-degree-plus weather, cloudless skies, and high humidity. The hard thing about times like this is that the kids aren't there, so there are no "kid breaks" and volunteers aren't directly rewarded with hugs.

The volunteers, representing 11 different churches, 9 of which were UMCs, started at 9am and worked until 2pm, some even opting to work through lunch.

The projects that were completed?

3 signs cemented in

Digging holes for 4 more signs then cemented in

A new flower garden at Southside

Prepping of a vegetable garden

Trees planted

Bird feeders hung

Sidewalks cleaned

Campbells Soup Labels clipped and sorted

Tutor room cleaned out

The group worked hard to serve the children of the Bethlehem Center. We thank these volunteers for all of their hard work.

But more touching, we noticed a "present" left for us as we were locking up that day. It was a note left from Caroline, the 6-year-old daughter of Rev. Tom Schnitzlein, the minister at St. Stephen. We felt like it was the perfect picture of how these volunteers felt about serving that day:

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8068662143460536335.post-84140427657810093692010-06-04T07:30:00.000-07:002010-06-04T07:31:56.516-07:00Impact CharlotteWe'll be welcoming friends from the UMC this weekend as part of the city-wide Impact Charlotte. Sometimes people have a certain area in mind that they want to help with, and other times the conversation with the volunteer goes something like this... "Put me wherever I am most needed."

We love this attitude, but sometimes it's hard for us to let you know what we need most, because our needs are so great! We want to hear what you can do for the kids. Are you a math whiz? Are you a concert pianist? Are you a certified counselor? Do you have a knack for marketing?

All of these things are needs and desires for the program. But our needs are exhaustive, and we can match your talents with our desires.

But specifically, the two areas that we direct most of our volunteers to are this: tutoring and office help.

So what can you expect for each opportunity?

Tutors are asked to commit to an hour a week for a semester. Some decide to stay longer, some cannot for personal reasons. We will pair you with one student, and you will monitor their progress over the semester and help them where needed. The requirements for this are 18 and over, background check clearance, a love of kids, and a willingness to commit for the desired time. Note: Ability to remember high school math not required, but if you can please let us know. One of the top comments we get during tutor interviews is, "I'm horrible at math!" Keep in mind that we assign tutors by highest need to lowest, and since we do not have a tutor for every child at this point, most tutors are working with children on remedial math and reading.

Office assistants will help with one or all of three offices: the BC main office (for the afterschool program), the development office, or the accounting office. We look for people to serve in this area who have a willingness to jump in and do it all. Volunteers in this area are much needed to help keep our staff costs down and our staff sanity up. Volunteers in the past have done everything from stuffing envelopes, answering phones, scanning in checks, and many other things. Due to the sensitivity and nature of the work being done, we do require a background check and for those volunteers to agree to confidentiality.

But what else do our volunteers do?

Resume writing assistance

Piano lessons

Art classes

Holiday parties for the kids

Landscaping/outdoor work

Event planning

Much, much more!

If you're interested in volunteering with us, please call 704-371-7404.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8068662143460536335.post-40978251273559770982010-01-13T08:21:00.000-08:002010-01-13T08:23:02.190-08:00Resident Camp Preparation 2010It’s hard to believe as we are experiencing 45 degree highs here in Charlotte, that it’s already time to plan for summer camp 2010!

Each year, the Bethlehem Center sends children to Christian resident camps in North Carolina with the help of area churches, board members and the surrounding community. Every year, we provide Bethlehem Center campers with sleeping bags and a duffel bag full of supplies needed for their camp experience. Most of our campers in 2010 are going to camp for the first time, so we are in need of sleeping bags. (Note: once a child attends a resident camp through us and receive a sleeping bag, they do not receive a new one in upcoming years.)

We are requesting completed packages, but will take any donations supplied. Below you will find what is needed in each duffel bag.

Camper Prep for Camp:
o Duffel Bag (generic, no gender specific)
o Sleeping Bag-Plain, No cartoons
o Flashlight and batteries
o Bar soap
o Shampoo
o Conditioner
o 2 hand towels
o 2 bath towels
o 2 face cloths
o Lotion
o Bug repellent
o Sun block
o Toothbrush
o Toothpaste
o Poncho or light rain coat
o Heavy duty comb or brush
o Deodorant
o Bible (optional, but please let us know if your bag does not have one)
o Anything additional is welcomed, but the above are essential

Please place all liquids in a large Ziploc bag for each child. We are hoping to get “packets” of stuff together to make packing of the bags easier and more efficient.

Campers start registering in February, and we will start taking finished bags on March 1st. We would like to have all bags in by April 15th.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call 704-375-1417.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8068662143460536335.post-52671149166985980612009-12-17T12:22:00.000-08:002009-12-17T12:40:16.342-08:00Status UpdateWe have to thank you all as a community for what you've done for us this year.

It's been a tough year, we must admit, with predictions mid-year of a $60,000 defecit. While we were proactive by cutting staff and expenses in anticipation of the shortfall, we'd also like to recognize those who stepped up to help close this gap, which has now narrowed to an anticipated $15,000.

In October, we received word that our Thanksgiving distribution to over 400 families was threatened. Our long-term supporter decided to shift focus to a local community, leaving our community to find alternative resources. You all stepped up, providing us with not only enough donations for this year, but some overflow to help lead us into next year as well.

As we look back on a year with such uncertainty, we cannot begin to thank you enough for all of you who have increased your giving. We had churches donate as much as 4 times the amount as last year. 3 churches designated $1500 to our programs (this is an increase from 2008 for all three), with another church conducting a special offering on Christmas Eve in our name.

And we cannot forget our individual donors, like the donor who called and let us know they would be sending us $2800 to support Thanksgiving programming and the countless other donors that dug deep to support us this year.

Thank you all for your teamwork, your efforts, your love, and your encouragement. Something that I loathe and love all at once. Loathe, because it's about the most boring thing ever. Love, because it means that you all as a community have been generous to the Bethlehem Center and furthering our work here.

About 10 minutes ago, I was handed 3 checks that I feel are an amazing demonstration of how each gift given to the Bethlehem Center counts for so much.

One check was for $130,000, one for $1,000 and one for $20.

Each gift was designated for a different area, each gift making an equal impact on the areas they were designated to.

The $130,000 will be put towards a down payment on our new ministry center on N. Sharon Amity. We are hoping to open this as a fully functioning ministry center for 50 kids next fall. In addition to our afterschool programs, we are hoping to offer Bible classes and Christian summer camps for the kids.

The $1000 will go towards our general fund. This fund is important because it supports the administrative expenses and overhead that allow us to do what we do. Without the lights turned on or maintenance to the buildings done, we wouldn't be able to operate efficiently.

The $20 will go towards funding the turkeys that we distribute to the families in the area. We will be able to purchase each of those for around $5, so the $20 gift will help 4 families in need.

One of the reasons I (Amy) came to work here is the simple fact that every gift--and I mean every gift--makes a difference and has a purpose here. Your gifts are felt.

Our new online donation tool through justgive.org has a feature that I encourage you all to utilize. You can now give gifts monthly. Did you know that just a $50 gift every month would put you in our top 10 individual (non-corporate) donors? Please help us continue our mission of providing educational opportunities to our children in the community.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8068662143460536335.post-75574257858323254132009-11-09T13:24:00.000-08:002009-11-09T13:27:42.435-08:00Volunteer Spotlight-Premier

Thank you to Premier for coming out on November 2nd. Needless to say, we were a little concerned.

We sent out e-mails, Tweets, facebook messages, and personal e-mails to all of our friends asking for help.

And the UMWs, UMCs, loyal Twitter followers, and faithful friends came through! We are very excited to report that as of yesterday, we had collected enough bags (counting the couple that we expected to come in today) to send all 80 children to camp!

Once again, though, we are asking for your help. We are still looking for financial support to send the kids to camp. It costs anywhere from $250-$400 (depending on the camp, age of kids, and transportation costs), and we have raised enough to send approximately 20 kids. We need your help sending 50-60 more. If you can help by making a financial donation, no matter how big or small, please send to Bethlehem Center c/o Amy Hutchison 2705 Baltimore Ave. Charlotte, NC 28203 with a memo for "Campership."

Once again, we thank you so much for all of your support!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8068662143460536335.post-13015875600539332002009-06-10T07:47:00.000-07:002009-06-10T12:47:05.134-07:00What is Bethlehem Center doing during tough economic times? We don't have to tell you that it's been tough on Americans through the past year. While the Charlotte Observer is reporting that the recession is over, Charlotte also is currently sitting at the highest unemployment rate in 25 years.

But what does that mean for Bethlehem Center?

In 2009, we have been extremely blessed by an increase in giving by some of our church supporters and the United Methodist Women. We cannot thank you enough for this. The Head Start arm of Bethlehem Center is expecting stimulus funds, due to a priority put on Head Start in the package. This will allow us to up our service levels from 858 children to an even 1000 in the 2009-2010 school year. According to Head Start research, society receives $9 in benefits for every $1 in support given to Head Start children. We expect these stimulus funds to not only impact the educational needs of the children, but to impact the Charlotte economy in a positive way.

That being said, we are seeing a greater need in the community that we serve through our Missions and Education department. We are seeing an increased number of requests for emergency funding (assistance with medications provided through our Missions department), which will be served by an increased net from the Bridge Tournament in 2009 versus 2008. We will once again be rewarding scholarships to students needing financial assistance to continue their education, and are already seeing an increased number of applications in 2009 versus 2008.

We are expecting cutbacks in funding from other government grants and our corporate partners, but our partnership with Arbor has allowed the addition of 5 staff at no cost to Bethlehem Center, 3 of which will be male role models to our children in our summer camp program, a much needed addition.

Bethlehem Center is not immune to these tough economic times, but we are committed to serving those in our community to help them through it. If you would like to help, our greatest needs currently are unrestricted funds, summer camp, and our emergency financial assistance program. Donations to any of these can be sent to: Bethlehem Center c/o Amy Hutchison 2705 Baltimore Ave. Charlotte, NC 28203Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8068662143460536335.post-87434760612874987482009-04-27T13:23:00.000-07:002009-04-27T13:38:01.255-07:00Saturday Worker-Bees at Bethlehem CenterThis Saturday, Bethlehem Center welcomed the youth from Harrison United Methodist Church. They were participating in a poverty simulation, which meant the youth (and adults!) weren't eating for 24 hours. Somehow, though, they fought through the 90-degree weather and helped out at our Southside Head Start center and with cleaning around the BC Main Missions building.

Thank you for all of your hard work!
