The number of skin cancer cases is going upward every year. The good news is there has been an explosion of sun protection products to prevent the disease. As the number of people who are becoming aware of the need for sun protection is increasing, sunscreen lotions and creams are taking the lion’s share of sun protection products in the market.

Hundreds of sunscreen brands are claiming to be the best sunscreens in the business making it confusing for many customers. The question as to which sunscreen is best for you can be answered by understanding what sunscreens are for, what they are made of, and how you should use them.

Sunscreen is a chemical used to prevent ultraviolet radiation from hurting the skin. UVA and UVB are two types of ultraviolet radiation that can damage the skin and cause skin cancer. UVA penetrates more into the skin compared to the latter and is known to be the main cause of skin wrinkling, sagging, and skin cancer itself. UVB on the other hand causes sunburn. Though sunscreens may not totally get rid of any UV damage to the skin, it can protect the skin when used properly.

UVA protection can be measured on a ranking of 1-4, low to high. When you see “broad spectrum” in a sunscreens label, it means that it contains chemicals like Zinc Oxide, Parsol, and Mexoryl that prevents radiation from penetrating the skin. Some sunscreens also have a chemical called Helioplex which can make other chemicals last longer in the skin.

You may also want to look at SPF, or Sun Protection Factor. SPF is used to measure the ability of a sunscreen to prevent UV Radiation from damaging the skin. To make it easier to understand, the more SPF’s the better. Some sunscreens come with an SPF 15 which blocks approximately 93% of UVB rays. The best sunscreens have higher SPF’s that can block 93-99% of UV Radiation. It remains a fact however, that no sunscreen can really protect you a hundred percent from UV rays.

Sunscreens come in many forms including creams, gels, sprays, moisturizers, and more. The choice depends on what you think will feel good on your skin and which is easier to apply. If you are planning on swimming or doing activities that will make you sweat a lot, look for water resistant sunscreens.

Sunscreens can be weighed by their ability to protect against UVA and UVB Radiation. As a general rule, always look for “broad spectrum”, “water resistant”, and “SPF”. Aside from those three, you also need to know that no sunscreen is expected to stay in effect for longer than two hours, meaning you need to reapply before the time is up.

Sometimes the effectiveness of even the best sunscreens in the market depends on how you use them, where you use them, and how long you stay under the sun. If you carefully consider these things, then choosing the best sunscreen for sun protection is an easy task.

Doesn’t anyone else wear sunscreen in the tanning bed? I used to go tanning every other day because it’s good for my psoriasis, but I would ALWAYS at least put sunscreen on certain spots, like my face and various moles, and sometimes all over. Don’t people think to do this?

I wear it on my face when I tan in beds. But not all over my body for a few reasons- that defeats the purpose of going in a bed & the ingredients in my sunblock could damage the bed

natural sunblock…..?

i’m looking for a problem to tackle for my Investigatory Project in Chemistry. i came across the chemical-sunscreen-harms-coral-reefs issue, and i decided to try and formulate a natural sunblock that’s easy and cheap to produce. (XD i just actually learned about natural sunblock now, can you believe it?)

and i researched a bit, and found a lot of natural sunscreens being sold already, and a few homemade concoctions for sunblock. but apparently, oils harm marine life, and i’m wondering if that applies to plant oils and that stuff. like coconut oil, cocoa butter, etc etc. if so, then these biodegradable sunblocks still harm marine life, and i’m going to look for one that won’t affect coral reefs whatsoever. (if those oils are okay, then my IP problem is doomed and i’m going to look for another problem to solve. ^_^)

so….there, that was one question about the oil thing. and…yeah. that’s it for now. ^_^

The best natural sunblock would be an organic, non-toxic, biodegradable, spray-on, water-based, homogeneous, eco-friendly, soy-based form of white paint. It would reflect UV radiation and IR radiation thus, preventing skin problems an global warming. It should also be edible and even be slightly nutritious and come in at least 4 flavors.

I would start with 3 eggs, 16oz BelGioioso mascarpone cheese, lady fingers, cognac, shaved Scharffenberg chocolate, and some powdered sugar.

which baby sunscreen offers the best protection?

as far as sunscreens go for babies, which sunscreen have you found that provides the best coverage and lasts the longest? we have our annual family camp coming up with a week at the beach. my daughter will be 8 weeks old. she will really not be in the sun hardly at all, but just in case, we are buying sunscreen.

There is no sunscreen recommended for babies under 6 months. Babies under 6 months should not be in the sun for any extended period of time. Your best course of action for your 8 week old is to keep her in the shade at all times as well as dressed in lightweight clothing that covers her. Invest in a good beach umbrella or a cabana type sun shade. Save your money and don’t worry about sunscreen as she should not have it on her skin. Ask your pediatrician and read all the labels of the sunscreen, but I guarantee you will not find one that is suitable for under 6 months.

I live in Arizona where the sun seems to always be shining. I want to do what I can to protect my skin from the UV rays, but everytime I where sunscreen I break out really bad. I have super oily skin and always break out if I put something on it that it doesn’t agree with. Any suggestions on the best sunscreen for me? Thanks!

A zinc oxide or other sunscreen recommended by the Envioronmental Working Group that goes on clear ?

I tried a recommended Zinc Oxide product from Lavera and it makes me as white as a ghost even after a lot of rubbing in, and it also kind of sticks to my arm hairs. The convenience of this is a far cry from the clear sprays which I used to use (which are not recommeneded, the ones I used anyway). I am hoping to find an EWG recommended sunscreen that goes on as clear as possible.

Okay, I had the same problem trying to find a clear zinc oxide product. Solar Sense makes a clear zinc product for the face: http://www.solar-sense.com/carded-jar.shtml

I have tried this and it does rub in clear. It takes a bit of rubbing and then it dries. If your skin is slightly oily like mine, this may be too greasy for you as I have found it to be. It is slightly moisturizing so it can leave a shine sometimes.

I found another product recommended by the EWG — the store brand, Walgreens Clear Zinc for Face. This is less shiny for me than the Solar Sense and much cheaper ($6.49 for 4 oz. versus $3.29 for 0.5 oz.)

Zinc oxide is really the best thing for your face because it really blocks out UVA rays (just make sure it’s at least 6% zinc oxide).

Another product that goes on clear but is quite hard to rub in is Vanicream Sport 35. It’s $9.99 for 4 ounces and you have to ask the pharmacy to order it for you. (Or you can go on the company Website and call them to request a sample. http://www.psico.com/products/products_view_options.cfm 1-800-325-8232.) I liked Vanicream as it was non-shiny, but it was just VERY thick and hard to rub in (plus it’s a pain having to order it from the pharmacy or from the website). With the Walgreens brand I find I rub it in until it still appears slightly white and then after about 15 minutes the shine and whiteness have disappeared.

Stay away from products with Titanium Dioxide. Even though, like zinc oxide, it is a great UVA blocker, titanium dixodie is even MORE whitening than zinc.

For the rest of your body, I would give up on using zinc. It’s just too hard to rub in, especially on areas with hair!
