The number of skin cancer cases is going upward every year. The good news is there has been an explosion of sun protection products to prevent the disease. As the number of people who are becoming aware of the need for sun protection is increasing, sunscreen lotions and creams are taking the lion’s share of sun protection products in the market.

Hundreds of sunscreen brands are claiming to be the best sunscreens in the business making it confusing for many customers. The question as to which sunscreen is best for you can be answered by understanding what sunscreens are for, what they are made of, and how you should use them.

Sunscreen is a chemical used to prevent ultraviolet radiation from hurting the skin. UVA and UVB are two types of ultraviolet radiation that can damage the skin and cause skin cancer. UVA penetrates more into the skin compared to the latter and is known to be the main cause of skin wrinkling, sagging, and skin cancer itself. UVB on the other hand causes sunburn. Though sunscreens may not totally get rid of any UV damage to the skin, it can protect the skin when used properly.

UVA protection can be measured on a ranking of 1-4, low to high. When you see “broad spectrum” in a sunscreens label, it means that it contains chemicals like Zinc Oxide, Parsol, and Mexoryl that prevents radiation from penetrating the skin. Some sunscreens also have a chemical called Helioplex which can make other chemicals last longer in the skin.

You may also want to look at SPF, or Sun Protection Factor. SPF is used to measure the ability of a sunscreen to prevent UV Radiation from damaging the skin. To make it easier to understand, the more SPF’s the better. Some sunscreens come with an SPF 15 which blocks approximately 93% of UVB rays. The best sunscreens have higher SPF’s that can block 93-99% of UV Radiation. It remains a fact however, that no sunscreen can really protect you a hundred percent from UV rays.

Sunscreens come in many forms including creams, gels, sprays, moisturizers, and more. The choice depends on what you think will feel good on your skin and which is easier to apply. If you are planning on swimming or doing activities that will make you sweat a lot, look for water resistant sunscreens.

Sunscreens can be weighed by their ability to protect against UVA and UVB Radiation. As a general rule, always look for “broad spectrum”, “water resistant”, and “SPF”. Aside from those three, you also need to know that no sunscreen is expected to stay in effect for longer than two hours, meaning you need to reapply before the time is up.

Sometimes the effectiveness of even the best sunscreens in the market depends on how you use them, where you use them, and how long you stay under the sun. If you carefully consider these things, then choosing the best sunscreen for sun protection is an easy task.

The summer is here and it’s getting hotter!And i was wondering how to choose the right type of sunscreen. Thanks for everyone who answers my questions! You’re a good help!!

I like oil free, but be sure to purchase one that covers both UVA and UVB rays. I think Neutrogena might be my favorite.

There is this sunscreen by Neutrogena that is non greasy, light, and has a high SPF, mine is 70, I have the link, it has so many great features, it feels like it’s not even there. Really, you should try it.

I live in Florida where it’s HOT HOT HOT! I like to go out often but i get worried because i get too tanned, i mean it’s normal for white people to want to get tanned but I’m Asian I’m already tan and i don’t want to get any darker, so how do i protect my skin from getting more tan? Which is the best cream lotion or whatever to do this?

think of yourself lucky.
i live in FL to but instead of getting tan i get burnt.
my dad says "oh your sunburnt" and i say no i’m not because i’m always red on my arms.

this sunscreen will be good because it’s 85spf so it will also last longer.
so put it in on the morning and you should be good for a while.
but also if you are going to put it on every day i would google sunscreen harm because it can damage.
Neutrogena is also a trusted brand so it should help!

Why is sunscreen not recommended for babies under 6 months?

I didn’t know and used kid sunscreen on my baby who is 5 months. Then I saw on the bottle that it wasn’t recommended for babies under 6 months. Why is that? Will my baby be okay? Has anyone else ever done the same thing? We were out in the sun all day and I just thought kid sunscreen would be fine. Now I am nervous…

As long as you use small amounts, your baby should be fine.

Here is what I found on iVillage.com:

There are two very important reasons for not overusing sunscreen in young babies:

1. Infants and children have what is called a high body surface to volume ratio. What this means is that proportionately babies have more skin for the size body as compared to an adult. Sunscreens are made of chemicals. On the older child and adult, the chemical exposure is relatively minimal because the body surface ratio is smaller than a baby. Therefore, babies get a higher "dose" of sunscreen than do those older. While this exposure would most likely not cause any problems, the likelihood of an adverse reaction is greater.

2. Babies have a mildly impaired mechanism to keep cool by sweating. In addition, they have a greater risk of becoming dehydrated due to heat. Sunscreen can somewhat impair effective cooling by perspiration, so placing it on an infant could be detrimental.

I’m Asian, and I tan so so easily, which worries me, because I don’t know if the sunblock/sunscreen is working.
Also, I can’t stop in the middle of practice to reapply sunblock/sunscreen. (Practice is like 1 hour and a half for me)

blue lizard is the best. i get it from the dermatologist office, but you don’t have to see one to get it. you can just go in and purchase the sunscreen. a good cheaper one is bullfrog.

My son is 2 months old. I love taking him on walks but its getting pretty sunny out these days. Can I put sun screen on him?

My doctor specifically said no sunscreen before 6 months.

I know what you mean about getting sun during walks. I did 2 things, I found a sun canopy extender from target. (I dont remember what it was called, but it is made of black mesh material and snaps on to your canopy.) Old navy sells some baby blankets that are made of the light-weight t-shirt material that I used to cover any exposed body parts. (you can also buy something you put in the wash to make clothing and blankets more UV potective.) Good luck!

Preferably with physical blockers (zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide). However, I don’t mind the chemical blockers too much (as in Avobenzone). I just definitely don’t want it to be loaded with parabens. I also prefer not to go broke (we need more than one tube for our family) Thanks in advance! Please share your favorite, not too-expensive sunscreen choices.

Check your local pharmacy. I picked up sunscreen with zinc oxide for $5. They also had cheaper store brand with only UVA protection (not UVB) for $2.50.
