Once children begin school, they are constantly busy. Homework, extracurricular activities and school sports take up much of their time. Many children spend a lot of time alone playing video and computer games, because there may not be a safe outdoor area for them to meet and play with friends.

One way to give children a break from routine, is a traditional summer camp. Traditional summer camps offer a variety of activities including hiking, crafts and sports. Some offer swimming, canoing and even horse back riding.

Some traditional summer camps may have a theme that is religious or sports oriented like baseball and football camps,. Others simply offer the same old fashioned activities that generations of children have enjoyed. For younger children there are day camps where the children sleep at home each night. Older children and teens can chose from residential camps with lodges, cabins or dorms for sleeping.

Many outdoor activities are offered and ins some cases traditional summer camps may offer lessons in swimming, tennis, horse back riding and other sports. In areas with special environments, like deserts or salt marshes, many camps offer special studies of the local flora and fauna. This is often done in an outdoor setting rather than a classroom and it gives children a chance to observe nature rather than simply learn about it.

You may wonder if you child really needs summer camp. Look at your child when he is outdoors interacting with friends, it is a different, freer attitude than when indoors. Whether you child is young, or a teenager he can benefit from the experience of a traditional summer camp. If you are not sure how to locate the right camp, there is a great online resource, CampPage.com. This sight allows you to search camps by area and any other criteria you wish. It also provides resources and articles to help you prepare you child for the time of his life.

Deciding to send your child to summer camp is easy. Finding the right camp can be more challenging. Think about your child’s interests and personality. Consider the activities that he or she enjoys most. The right camp may be a specialty camp that caters to a particular hobby or interest or a more traditional camp.

Lots of Options
There are day and residential kids summer camps that offer great sports programs like basketball, football, tennis and soccer. If your child is a dancer or an artist, there are camps that offer excellent courses. Some children prefer academic pursuits like computers, math, science or history. Others may love nature and want to study flora and fauna in a wilderness environment. Some may just like to play with other children and prefer the activities of more traditional camp environment. Chose you child’s camp with their interests in mind.

The Cost Factor
Cost is another factor in any parent’s decision to send their child to camp. The prices of camps vary widely depending on whether the program is day or residential and the type of activities offered. When considering the cost, remember that if your child has to be in a day care program, that too, will cost money. Consider the cost of day care against the cost of camp. There may not be much difference and camp can be a lot more fun.

Special Needs Camps
Don’t discount kids summer camps if your child has special needs. There are very good programs available for special needs children. Some programs may even offer scholarships for parents who cannot afford the camp. If your child has asthma, diabetes or allergies, check with camps you are considering to see if they are equipped to deal with these special circumstances.

Use the Internet
You can find the right camp by searching the Internet. Many local and national programs have websites. Search by type of camp, age of participants, residential or day camp, location and any other factors you wish to consider. Your child will enjoy their camp experience more if you take the time to choose the camp that will suit them best.

The new summer sports camps that are available are truly a far cry from the summer camps that we enjoyed whenever we were children. Make sure that your youngsters get the most out of these camps and are left with memories that will last a lifetime.

Many of us can remember summer camps from our childhood. Some of us remember these camps with a certain amount of trepidation but for most of us, they were an enjoyable time in our lives that we still treasure.

If the time has now come to send your child to camp as well, there are several things that you should keep in mind. The summer camps of our youth have really given way to a number of different types of camps that are now available. For example, there are many excellent summer sports camps which can do a lot to help to develop a healthy child, both in mind and body.

One of the reasons why many parents are now choosing a sports camp for their children is because it gives them the ability to do activities other than the arts and crafts that are available at a run-of-the-mill camp. These activities are organized by experienced camp staffers and can offer your child the ability to have an action-packed summer without you having to take care of every step along the way. It can also expose them to a number of different things which they may not be able to be exposed to otherwise.

Another reason why you may choose summer sports camps is because your child has shown some kind of exceptional ability in one type of sport or another. It’s an excellent way for them to develop their talent in that sport while also enjoying some time with their peers in a camp atmosphere. Many of the summer sports camps that are aim to not only train children in these particular sports, they also help them to grow as an individuals.

One of the most difficult decisions that you’re going to have to make whenever it comes to choosing summer sports camps is exactly how far away you’re going to send your child to attend. Some of these camps could require that you send your child quite a distance from home for some activities, so it needs to be a personal decision as to whether you will allow this take place or not.

There’s no doubt that these camps are going to give your child memories that they will treasure for the rest of their life. One thing’s for certain, the summer sports camps that are now available are miles away from the summer camps that we visited when we were a child.

For younger children the prospect of spending a night away from home can be frightening. Before sending you child to an overnight summer camp program you should prepare and reassure the child. Some children may even think that they are being sent away for good. Talk to them about camp and how long they will be there and how much you will miss them.

If you are fortunate, your child may have spent a few nights away from home at grandparents’ or friends’ homes. If not, you should arrange for some sleepovers before sending them to overnight camp. If they feel assured that it is alright to spend the night away from mom and dad, and that mom and dad will pick them up when they say they will, they should have no problems dealing with overnight summer camp.

Some children may still feel insecure after the first or second day at camp. If the camp allows children to make or receive telephone calls, arrange to speak to your child. Make sure that you are available at the time you promised to call, or expect their call. Speaking with a parent can allay the fear of abandonment that some children have.

To a young child, a week can seem like a life time. If your child is enjoying his new surroundings and activities, he will probably not miss his parents as much. Children who continue to be troubled may have to come home. It isn’t fair to disrupt the sleep of other campers and counselors with a child who is inconsolable.

Know your child. If your child is young or exceptionally clingy, now may not be the time to send him to overnight summer camp. Some children need a little more time to grow up than others. You are sending your child to camp so he will have learn new skills, make friends, and have a good time. If he can’t enjoy himself away from mom and dad, he probably should wait another year for this experience. Try a day camp this year instead.

Some children may have only a vague idea of what summer camp entails. Arrange a time when your child can meet other children who have enjoyed a positive camp experience.

You might want to consider getting a book or two about summer camp for your child to read. There are books at Amazon for almost any age group about both day and overnight camps.

Summer is here and its time for outdoor fun. Kids who have been cooped up in school for months look forward to getting outside and playing. If you are working parents, instead of sending your child to a daycare where they will be indoors for most of the day, consider sending them to an outdoor summer camp.

There are many outdoor summer camp programs available in communities all over the United States. Some are day camps where the child comes home at night, and some are residential camps. By their nature, camps encourage outdoor activities.

Traditional camps offer hiking, swimming, sports, arts and crafts, even biking. These are activities that get children moving and active while they enjoy the outdoors. Theme camps may offer programs that require some time indoors, but still encourage children to participate in outdoor activities. Sports camps are by their very nature, outdoor summer camps.

There are camps for almost every child, from 5 to 18, where they will get outside and get moving. With childhood obesity becoming a national epidemic, its time to get children back to physical activities that tone the body and sharpen the mind. Having other children to interact with helps to teach social skills and games teach sportsmanship and fair play.

Whether you chose a day camp or a residential program, outdoor summer camps will give your child a fun time and a learning experience. Sunshine and fresh air are great counterpoints to winters spent indoors. Away from city lights, some children will actually see the stars for the first time. There is just something delicious about ghost stories told outdoors by a campfire, and that’s not to mention roasted marshmallows and smores.

Give your child a terrific vacation this year with an outdoor summer camp. Its an experience he’ll never forget.
