One a day will keep the depression away. Too many men (and women) today, the bathroom mirror is the mortal enemy. Every day, you stumble into the bathroom, yank the toothbrush out of its holder, and very reluctantly venture an eye into the mirror above the sink.

What you see devitalizes you. It devastates you. What once sprung so vivaciously from your head has now been replaced by a smooth, shiny surface. In just a couple of years, it seems, your looks have aged by ten years. It’s a process that consumes you day by day, week by week. And there’s nothing you can do to stop it. Yes, you are going bald.

However, as helpless as it may feel, not everybody is taking this seemingly inevitable fate sitting down. Many Americans every day are opening up the medicine cabinet behind that mirror to pull out the tabulated form of salvation. It’s not the first product to treat hair loss and it certainly won’t be the last, but baldness prescriptions are certainly winning the race when it comes to foiling vanity’s worst nightmare.

At first, it looks a lot like your standard pain reliever or aspirin pill. The pain that baldness prescriptions will ease you from, however, is of a much different variety. As you probably know already, baldness prescriptions have been proven to fight the process of hair loss and in many cases, actually re-grow some hair. These medications are usually in the form of a tablet, taken daily, with a month’s supply generally running between $50 and $55.

And the fact that these meds actually works, they’re saying, is much more than just hair-say. The facts are out. Granted, this study was done over the course of two years of prescriptions use, but 83 percent of balding men between the ages of 18 and 41 maintained their hair count during the experiment, while 66 percent of the group actually grew back a considerable amount of hair.

Most hair doctors will tell you that baldness prescriptions take a good three to four months before kicking in, so if you’re waiting for immediate results, you may want to look into more natural alternatives (see below). But if you don’t see any positive results after a year or so, chances are that you’re not only wasting you time, you’re wasting your money as well.

Now comes the bad news. For you ladies who are seeing dread atop the head, meds may not be for you. The drugs designed exclusively for men. Also, baldness prescriptions, like many other medications, are not free of unfortunate side effects. Under extensive experimenting, a small number of subjects (2 percent, to be exact) were effected with such conditions as diminished sex drive, inadequate erections, and a decrease in semen.

So what can you do? Natural supplements have long been use to prevent, and even stop hair loss dead in its tracks. Inositol is also a member of the B vitamin group. In laboratory animals, a diet lacking Inositol produced baldness, but when the vitamin was added to the food of these animals, the hair grew back again. One doctor in a series of experiments prescribed Inositol together with other sources of B vitamins to all his balding patients. In almost all case’s hair loss was arrested, in some case’s hair growth was noticeable in as little as one month. In one case hair recovery was total and not one bald spot remained.

Biotin, often called vitamin H, is yet another B complex component. Biotin is a proven hair growth vitamin and a preventative to excessive hair loss. It appears to metabolise fatty acids. Fatty acids are a valuable growth factor in numerous processes in the body including the hair. Biotin is also seen as an aid in preventing hair turning grey.

Vitamin E can also be beneficial in preventing baldness. A Canadian physician who started going grey was able to reverse the process by taking 800iu of vitamin E in capsule form daily. At the age of 68 after some 15 years of taking vitamin E he still has a healthy head of thick black hair, and is the envy of men half his age.

Choline is a B vitamin like nutrient that’s useful in counter acting the effects of stress. Have We Won The Fight Against Hair Loss?

The thought of going bald has always been a private nightmare for most men. We dare not think of it. Maybe just the thought would cause our hair follicles to shrivel up and die.

It’s the 21st century and we’re no closer to defeating the common cold much less hair loss. Or are we closer? Let’s take a look at the facts first.

1. If you’re going bald there’s a 95% chance it’s hereditary.

2. Minoxidil and Propecia are the only FDA approved drugs to treat hair loss.

3. Neither Minoxidil or Propecia is 100% guaranteed to work.

4. By doing nothing your 100% guaranteed to continue losing hair.

Those are some pretty harsh realities. I rather get the bad news outta the way first. Since DHT is responsible for causing hair loss we’ll look at ways to slow down it’s production.

NATURAL TREATMENTS:

A. Green Tea – Thought to effect the 5a-reductase type I enzyme, which converts testosterone to DHT.

F. Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids – Contain anti-inflammatory properties that are useful in maintaining healthy hair. By increasing these levels of essential fatty acids one can slow down hair loss.

G. Horsetail (herb) – Rich in amino acids, silica, and phytosterols, which condition & strengthen hair as well as reduce buildup of oils in the scalp.

Today’s article is all about hair loss and home remedies. While there are a LOT of products on the market today that claim to slow, stop, prevent or reverse hair loss, there are many other ways to attack hair loss that don’t include using strong chemicals or prescription drugs. Granted, some are effective and some are not, but the only way to know for sure (just like using Propecia) is to try them for yourself. I’m going to list a few possible ways to treat hair loss and let you make up your own mind on their effectiveness. Just to remind you all…I am not advocating any type of hair loss treatment, simply because every person is different and what might work for you might not work for someone else!

Okay, the first type of home remedy can be categorized as “herbal”. Many folks, including myself, have begun using certain herbs to combat all sorts of problems…anything from aging skin to a lack of energy to, you guessed it, hair loss. Here are some of the more popular herbs pertaining to hair loss…

Stinging nettle: Also known as Urtica Diocia, this herb has the ability to block the conversion of testosterone into DHT (DHT is often the cause of male hair loss). An optimum dose of 50-100mg per day in capsule form is recommended.

Ginkyo biloba: this herb is thought to improve blood circulation to the brain and skin. It is believed that the increased flow of blood to the brain area delivers more nutrients to the hair follicle thus promoting hair regrowth. Understanding Male Hair Loss

In many families, balding has become almost an expected occurrence as a man ages. Even though these men are expecting male hair loss, they don’t escape the emotional turmoil that this condition often causes.

The medical term for genetic male hair loss is “androgenetic alopecia”. For most men, the technical term falls far short of describing the condition. Understanding the cause of hair loss doesn’t guarantee cheerful acceptance, but it can go a long way in helping the victim to cope.

The cause of male hair loss in the vast majority of men is genetic, or a trait inherited from one’s parents. Basically, if one’s family is genetically predisposed to male hair loss, the hormones that developed masculine traits during puberty will begin working against oneself at some point, causing hair to thin and fall out. A certain gene causes the hair follicles to change after puberty, although hair loss may occur until much later. As a man matures, a form of testosterone called DHT begins to rise, and the already affected hair follicles to function less effectively. The hormone imbalance caused by the DHT causes the hair follicle to work less and less, causing the hair that grows there to grow thinner and eventually die and fall out.

This process is called “androgenetic alopecia” by the medical establishment, but many men have much more colorful names for it. Of course, anyone watching late night television knows that there are many hair loss remedies marketed to men and often women. Some medical treatments include the FDA approved Rogaine and Propecia, retail names for the drugs minoxidil and finesteride, respectively. Many companies market hair thickeners and gels, designed to help the hair remaining look thicker, but not providing a solution to the underlying problem.

Of course, there are many “natural” and herbal treatments that claim to regrow hair, some more effective than others. Billions of dollars are spent each year on these treatments. Many men choose hair replacement, plugs or reseeding and some even try a toupee.

Understanding male genetic hair loss is necessarily the first step to searching for a hair loss remedy or even one’s acceptance of baldness. The ultimate goal in either situation is to eliminate male hair loss as a cause of one’s emotional stress.

Former tennis star Andre Agassi has admitted the lion mane-style hairstyle he sported during the 1990s was actually a wig, in extracts from his autobiography published in British newspapers Saturday.

Agassi said he wore a hairpiece held together with pins in his first Grand Slam final, the 1990 French Open final, and blamed his concerns that it would fall apart for losing the match to Andres Gomez.

Before the match he prayed “not for victory, but that my hairpiece would not fall off”, he writes in “Open”.

In previous excerpts, Agassi admitted he had used the drug crystal methamphetamine in 1997.

He said he started to wear a wig to disguise hair loss.

“Every morning I would get up and find another piece of my identity on the pillow, in the wash basin, down the plughole,” he wrote.

“I asked myself: you want to wear a toupee? On the tennis court? I answered myself; what else could I do?”

But the wig began to disintegrate as he took a shower the night before the Paris final — “probably I used the wrong hair rinse,” Agassi writes.

He panicked and called his brother Philly into the room. Together, they managed to clamp the wig together using clips and pins.

Agassi, 39, writes: “Of course I could have played without my hairpiece, but what would all the journalists have written if they knew that all the time I was really wearing a wig?

“During the warming-up training before play I prayed. Not for victory, but that my hairpiece would not fall off.

“With each leap, I imagine it falling into the sand. I imagine millions of spectators move closer to their TV sets, their eyes widening and, in dozens of dialects and languages, ask how Andre Agassi's hair has fallen from his head.”

It was actress Brooke Shields, who he married, who persuaded him to cut off all his remaining hair.

“She said I should shave my head,” he said. “It was like suggesting I should have all my teeth out.

“Nevertheless, I thought for a few days about it, about the agonies it caused me, the hypocrisy and lies.”

But after taking the plunge, “a stranger stood before me in the mirror and smiled,” Agassi said.
