This Bug's for You

I just watched watched Pinocchio with my children, while we were all sick with the flu. On a recent trip to Cancun, we took this photo. It got me wondering about conscience. Good ol' Jiminy Cricket was Pinocchio's Conscience. I printed off the picture, and posted it near my desk. No, not to cause distress for anyone looking at it (it is scary, and very large indeed), but rather a gentle reminder to always do the right thing.

One might argue that you do not need a talisman to do good. I agree. This is a small token to remind me to think good, feel good. Do you have any charms you look to for daily reminders?

Spring is Here, are You a Shrinking Violet?

Spring is among us now. And in keeping with the theme, the market is sprouting a little too.

Here in Bellingham, WA, we have seen market improvement in the past two months. No doubt, lower interest rates, first-time home buyer tax credits, and lower home prices are to blame.

While we were in a market slump, many agents left the industry or reduced their availability to part-time. I was lucky enough to maintain a full-time status. Were you one of the lucky ones?

Frequently I am asked about the market, as I am sure most of you are. I have worked tirelessly to stay ahead academically of the market. Mailing cards, making phone calls, sending e-newsletters, and educating my clients - all have been my highest priority. Even if I have not had as many transactions on the table as usual, I have kept my clients informed religiously about market conditions. My phone has been busy nonetheless, even if it has been me making the lion's share of the calls. I have been unafraid to tell the truth, to share the good, the bad, and the ugly. I have, as it were, kept it real.

With Spring on the horizon, the sun shining more, and flowers beginning to bloom, so too is our housing market. Fortunately, I am prepared because I have been present each and every day with my clients. And as many agents became fair-weather, I remain steadfast and current.

I spent the last few months stepping up and not cowering away from our sour market. I have not chosen to follow the market lead, and play catch-up with clients.

In Winter, plants and trees can sometimes lay dormant. They are rather unexpressive, and can look lonely and unhealthy. We have been experiencing a Winter in the housing market, and I chose not to remain inactive. Instead, I was more like an evergreen - although not growing, still present, full, and thriving.

With Spring upon us, and flowers in bloom, are you? Or are you recoiled in the corner waiting for the market to fully recover before igniting your clients? Are you a thriving vine or a shrinking violet?

Only time will tell. But have you created a faithful following? Or have you lost clients like trees lose leaves in the wintertime?

Military Relationships Never Die - My Wake-Up Call

The phone rang this morning very early. I knew it could not be the pilot, so I thought "Self, who could be calling so early?" Not wanting to be the person who answers the phone like they just finished smoking a pack of cigarettes chased by a fifth of whiskey, I faked a "Good Morning! This is Amy..."

"Mrs. Led?" (husband's Call Sign is Led, as in Zeppelin, as in guitar-playing pilot who once had long hair prior to joining the military). I answered perkily, "Yes, wow, I haven't heard that name in a while."

Turns out, a fighter pilot from Led's past is accepting orders to NAS (Naval Air Station) Whidbey Island, WA, to be a flight instructor. Although there are wonderful Connect Realty agents in the Oak Harbor and Anacortes areas of WA, he would rather have the Bellingham Realty Girl assist his family with a Military PCS, as I specialize in VA Loan transactions and taking care of Military Spouses.

Just because of the history of the relationship, I will become this pilot's buyer's agent. The level of intimacy shared in the military through strength and bonding is immeasurable. He and Led deployed together overseas to Iraq on an aircraft carrier. Have you ever seen two pilots get together and have a conversation? Their hands are all over the place in what I like to call the "there I was" stance.

It is rare indeed to find a profession which lends itself to creating lifelong relationships. Where military relationships are concerned, time stands still.

This one call became a true "wake-up" call for me. It occurred to me that I had not had real conversations with many of our military friends around the country for quite some time. Email and Christmas cards seem to be commonplace and have replaced the telephone. I spent the better part of the day calling old friends, catching up, leaving messages even. Initially I had lead generation on my mind. The cosmos had another plan.

I discovered a number of friends are currently deployed to Iraq and Afganistan. I gathered their deployment addresses so Led and I can assemble some care packages (I am awfully good at those). Cultivation. That is what it is all about. Sure, my business came up in conversations, but there was something much bigger at play. It is not about me.

As Easter approaches tomorrow, it occurs to me that a few years ago, I spent Easter alone without Led, and children were not quite on the horizon yet. The photos included were taken during that deployment. It seems as though no matter how much time has passed, how much distance has grown, and how much families have expanded, the closeness of the military relationship remains intact, familiar, and strong.

More than an email, a letter, or a card, a phone call to those far away is the handshake or hug so often shared in friendship. I encourage you to explore your past relationships, and pick up the phone.

And as we celebrate Easter, remember those servicememmbers who are not here a part of the collective, but rather abroad ensuring our safety and freedom. To those who have served, and who continue to serve, I say thank you. To Led, I say thank you, and I love you. May all those abroad return safely.

If my Son can Battle Darth Vadar, I can Stand Up to My Clients

I have clients who insist on pricing their home too high. They will not listen to reason. "But we bought it at this price, why isn't it worth twice that now? We wanted this property, so will someone else. The market isn't affecting these more expensive homes..." and on and on. You get the picture.

Some short time ago, we visited DisneyLand in California. We surprised the children with the news on the morning we drove the airport. Instead of celebrating and running around the house screaming like my 4 yr. old did (she knew she would dine with the coveted Disney Princesses), my son sat on the counch rather pensively. Clearly we could tell he had something significant on his mind. We joined him on the couch. And here is what the little man said to us:

...Well, I'm sort of excited. But my friend Cody went to DisneyLand and he had to fight Darth Vadar (keep in mind, my son is obsessed with all things Star Wars. He has four light sabres so the whole family can spar. He has every action figure including Princess Leia. And has a Darth Vadar, Clone Trooper, and Jedi costume). And Darth Vadar is sort of scary. He's mean and people don't like him...

To our wise yet vulnerable young son, we explained about the concept of pretend (while nervously looking at our watch. I mean, we had to get moving! Mickey Mouse does not hold planes, even for cute little fellows) Our brave son gets up off the couch, and argues:

...Let's go. I'm ready. Darth Vadar is a bad guy. I will fight him. Can I bring my Jedi costume and Star Wars suitcase and a couple Star Wars guys? (yes he really has one)...

After some explanation that we had already packed his Star Wars suitcase for him, and, no, he would not be allowed to bring a light sabre on board the plane (the husband-pilot assured us that TSA would not be okay with this). You see, Disney offers a fantastic show where children are selected from the audience, "trained" in the jedi arts, and then have an opportunity to "fight" Darth Vadar. Who even knew if our son would be chosen?

Who am I kidding? He is adorable, full-hearted, and looks great in the Jedi costume. Voila! He was selected. But not before contemplating the situation and carefully calculating his moves with Darth Vadar! He "graduated" Jedi training, and fought Darth Vadar - and won. He won! Words cannot describe the pride and love we had for Jedi Leland at the moment in time. Darth Vadar said: You have been taught well, young Jedi. My son faced his greatest nemesis, in the passion of saving his world.

Why can't we all face our challenges publicly, without fears of repercussions? My son was 6, and fought Darth Vadar. You men out there can identify with the importance and significance with that, can't you? Star Wars is for men what Titanic is for women.

The punch line is this: if my boy can face the meanest guy he knows in his little universe, then I can certainly stand up to my stubborn clients, and not walk away. I can and will say, "Pricing is everything. Location is important, but if the price is not accurate, then it will not sell. I repeat, it will not sell."

...And furthermore, I will not tolerate idle threats. Go ahead and call those other agents who continue to call you. If they want a listing merely to generate leads off of the sign, then go ahead. You will not make me feel little. I know the market. I know the challenges of the market. I know that this price to which you have married yourself will not stand the test of the market. It will fail, and it will sit and sit and sit without a reasonable, qualified offer. And then who will you blame?...

Oh, the force is strong... I drew strength from my young Jedi that day, and it has served we well ever since. Go with the Force Jedi agents. And stand up to your Real Estate fears. Great, kid, now don't get cocky. That too is important, my friends.

Winnie the Pooh Gave me Life... [part 1]

I was inspired by Clare C's The Importance of Reading the Instructions. I learned my greatest lesson almost too late, because I never read the instructions. Here's the Punch Line - on the back cover read the words: read page 3, Amy...

Upon my college graduation, my Uncle Bill gave me a book entitled "Pooh's Little Instruction Book", indpired by A. A. Milne. This was a cute gesture, charming even, but what could I ever learn from a silly old bear anyway? I thought, "Self, you do not know the true gift in this yet. Hold onto it." And that I did. I waited and waited.

I read the little book time and again. Nothing. Annually, I would clean out the bookshelves of unwanted books for garage sales and used book stores (I mean, how long did I really have to hold onto my History of Rock and Roll text book from college, or that Sylvia Plath poetry book I bought during my "dark" phase in high school?). But I never could quite rid myself of Pooh's little book.

The cover grew weary (college was a long time ago), and the pages dogeared from years of thumbing. Still nothing.

Then I passed my Real Estate license exam, and I ran to Pooh's book. Surely I would uncover some little gem of wisdom that would serve me well in my new career (thank goodness I was no longer handling military contracts, and negotiating with generals, that no, they could not just have an extra million dollars worth of studies performed at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command). Nada. Aught. "Self, the book needs to go."

Fast forward a few months. Real Estate was working for me, but not really working. I was going through the motions, but my relationships seemed empty and vapid. I was being paid but felt disconnected. Naturally loquacious in nature, how could this happen? I was analytical, aggressive, and academic. Just what a professional should be, right?

The phone rings, my Uncle Bill passed away. I was suddenly faced with the notion that I had missed something. Something that would change my life. I just could not unearth the missing link. My Uncle Bill had nothing more than an eighth grade education, but you would never know it. His entire community of Clifton Forge, VA, loved him. Truly loved him. He was a citizen's man. An honorable man. A wise man. The kind of man you wanted to know just because he was compassionate and authentic.

We decided to have an estate sale, so I packed the car with my newborn and a few boxes of things to sell myself (the fighter pilot was sadly deployed). On top of one of the boxes was Pooh's Little Instruction Book.

The sale was a success. Not much leftover (always a good sign). In a box of old 45s, rested Pooh's instruction book. It did not sell. I had a tender moment of sadness, and opened the book. It felt like the first time. I flipped through the entire book for the first time, all the way to the end. On the back cover read the words: read page 3, Amy. I flipped through to the very beginning. There are no page numbers, so I had to manually count, (what if I started counting on the wrong page?) Or better still, what if I had counted correctly, and my outlook on life changes? And that it did my friends.

On page 3 is a quote from Winnie the Pooh - It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?"

Lunch. That sentence changed my life. I had been wheeling and dealing, but never relating. And that is what life is all about - relating to one another. I grabbed that little book, and held it close to my heart. It changed my life forever. Life became authentic in that one moment. I was brought to life. And I brought that life into my business. And now I am known for my strong relationships and for making each of my clients feel like family.

Relating is paramount to any business. Without it, you have nothing. Nada. Aught. How different my life might be had I not read the instructions - read page 3, Amy. I carried this story closely, not knowing when the time was right to share it. Clare unleashed my story. My sincere gratitude to Clare, and to Uncle Bill. Who knew one rotund bear with very little brain, could impart such enlightenment.

If someone ever gives you an instruction book, however cutesy, hold onto it. The time might not be now that you can learn from it, but there will be a time. That I can guarantee you. Thank you for reading.

I Voted for Earth Tonight

Tonight, March 28, at 8:30pm local time, I turned off my lights. And for one hour, I voted for Earth. It was Earth Hour. Wherever you live on Planet Earth, Earth Hour is a time of contemplation, a time for reflection, a time to vote for our planet.

This was the first year a vote for the planet became global. The election transcended borders, ethnicities, and ages. Started in Sydney in 2007, over two million homes switched their lights to "off" to make a stand against global warming. By 2008, the message was more transcontinental with the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Colosseum in Rome, and Sydney's famous Opera House all shrouded in illumination. Even in Times Square, bilboards rested in darkness.

But 2009, the globe set a different goal. A goal of one billion shutting off their lights for one hour. The idea being that this is a vote where your country of origin does not play a role, but rather your planet of origin - Planet Earth.

Instead of having lights on tonight, I sat in darkness, warmed by the soft glow of a dozen or so candles I lit for the occasion. I made sure to put one in each of the children's rooms (as they are still unsettled by the dark). I looked outside for a brief moment, and I realized that I sat alone in the dark. But that is okay. Perhaps the neighbors forgot, or were unaware.

Either way, I voted for Earth tonight in a global election of sorts, and it felt grand. I have been reading on which US cities participated. The Sears Tower, Empire State Building, and the Golden Gate bridge all dimmed their lights tonight. Not to be outdone, the famous strip in Las Vegas even went dark, including the world-famous Luxor Hotel & Casino, who's light can be seen from space.

Where else in the world were lights shut off in honor of Earth Hour? The Bird's Nest in Beijing, China; Giza Pyramids in Cairo, Egypt; the Acropolis in Greece; over 1700 buildings in Hong Kong; the business disctrict in Jakarta, Indonesia; the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Rome's Colosseum; the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden; the Eiffel Tower in Paris (only for five minutes); the Connaught Place in New Delhi, India.

Nearly four thousand cities joined forces in over 85 countries for the World Wildlife Fund-sponsored event to raise awareness for global warming.

I cannot wait to have my "Hi honey, I've landed safely" phone call from the pilot in a little while, who was flying across the country tonight, and ask him if he noticed anything unusual about the lights from cities. He is always commenting on city lights, and the sheer number of them.

All around the nation, as home sales drop, and market fears have paralyzed the housing economy, homeowners are finding better coping mechanisms.

Refinancing is currently popular with the recent interest rate drop. Sunset Saturday

This evening, after returning home from the spa, I spotted our Alpine goat Aldo (named after my favorite shoe designer) up on his perch, looking out onto his kingdom. I could not resist sharing with you 'rainers, as you have been most supportive during my recent loss of Spot, our big-lipped cat.

Being a Realtor, I am never without my camera; I just had to take a photograph. In the second photo, you will notice how the light changed. Here in Bellingham, WA, our sunsets are magestic, but the colors change so rapidly and can be fleeting.

You may be asking, why would the Bellingham Realty Girl have goats in the first place? Oh, did I not mention that I have two? Well, to make a very long story short (I have some southern roots, and we can tend to tell a long story from time to time)... Our "Goat Project" was hatched over a couple bottles of fine German Mosel wine while sitting at this little outdoor cafe in Austria, dwarfed by the Alps (you wine lovers and connoisseurs will know what I am talking about) and Streudel. Don't all brilliant ideas begin with wine?

Tipsy on the finest white wine a grape has ever produced, the pilot thinks that we too could have livestock to gently snack on blackberry bushes, and keep the lawn looking ragged and rolling. Equally tipsy, I acquiesced. What could be so hard about a couple of goats? (I only agreed honestly, because the pilot said I could name the goats and they could indeed wear cute bells - which ours do).

We returned from Europe with the highest tolerances we had ever had in our marriage (and the realization that it is indeed fulfilling to go on vacation without children), and plans to erect the most gawdy of goat chalets.

So, four months later, two acres of fencing, a livestock guardian dog (...a whole different blog folks...), and the gawdiest of goat chalets this side of the Mississippi (and two tinkling bells from the local feed store,) we drove east four hours and bought two neutered male Alpine goats.

No, we have no plans to breed, milk, or eat them. We just like looking at them, walking with them, and enjoying their affection. You didn't know that goats could be very affectionate did you? Well, they have a certain affinity for my ear lobes, I can tell you.

Enter into our lives Aldo and Beppe (named after a famous Italian acoustic guitar player). You see that? Like Jack and Jill sinks, the pilot and I argued over names for these goats more than we did for our children. Seriously. We each named one, and wouldn't you know it? I name one after an Italian shoe designer, while the pilot names one after a guitarist. Why Italian names? As I mentioned earlier, that's a blog of a different color, and having something to do with our polar bear dog, Luna.

I'm a Realtor, and I Cried in Public...

About a month and a half ago, I read a blog post by Todd Clark entitled Why Can't We Take Away Their Pain.... I did not comment, and I regret it. I am sorry Todd. Todd wrote of Midge, the family dog, and her sudden and tragic death and how he was dealing with it. As I read his post, I thought "Self, you could never write about such a thing. You are not that brave... only family would want to hear such terrible news." And again, I am sorry for feeling that way.

Today, I write with a very heavy heart. You see, yesterday my husband and I had to put down our once corpulent and fiercely affectionate feline friend, Spot. He was just over fourteen years old and was, along with his sister, our wedding present to one another. We did not have much money back then, but we had a home that needed pets, and we had a lot of love.

His lack of appetite, funny walk, and sad eyes were signs something was amiss. From the time we learned of his baseball-sized tumor, to when we had to put him down, was less than 24 hours. I was suddenly occupying space in the twilight zone. Neither the fighter pilot (the husband) or I had ever done this before.

We had a final night with Spot to pet his now thinned frame (when I say gi-normous, our kitty was b-i-g. Of course, we blamed it on big bones, never wanting to give him a complex), prepare the children, and try to make sense of it all.

This cat was trans-continental; he had been back and forth across this great nation more than most, had participated in nine military moves (and revelled in the packing paper and boxes upon arriving to a new home). He could spend more time in the litter box than most women getting ready for a night out with the girls. And Spot's meow could wake the dead; in fact, if that did not work, he would walk across your head allowing his large belly to drag ove your forehead, just to get you out of bed in the mornings. Funny. But perhaps his most notable feature (other than the black spot on his back - hence his name), were his lips. Yes, you read correctly. Spot had lips. Everyone who met him, noticed him. Lips like a guppy, that one.

Being a Realtor, I take great care to be presentable around town, never knowing if I will meet a new client or run into an old one. Maybe not always dressed up for an Open House, but at least put-together and 'fresh looking', as my old etiquette teacher would put it. But yesterday was different. I was in an emotional crisis. We were about to lose a family member.

I had wept all morning until putting Spot in the car. Do we put him in the carrier? Do I just hold him on my lap? What if there is a giant Doberman named Brutus in the waiting room and Spot gets frightened? So many stupid questions... We arrive, I whimper. The fighter pilot grabs the carrier (good decision) and whimpers. I don my Chloes and in we march.

Just seeing the staff (one of whom is a client of mine), made me cry some. And then I think "Self, why are wearing sunglasses? You are not in the Matrix. Stop this tom-foolery and act human." We did not have to wait at all; we were ushered quickly to a lovely room, with a blanket, and soft lighting.

We left the vet's office, empty carrier in hand, with the knowledge we had done the right thing. Spot was at peace now. And as we drove away, it was raining the biggest drops (well what do you expect? We live in the Northwest, where it rains often, and this is a sad story, so of course, it has to be raining). As I watched the rain drip down my window so that I could not even see out, I realized that it was raining on my heart. Todd Clark's post graced my mind. And then I knew... I knew that writing would be my salvation.

I have found that watching my words flow across my screen tonight have lifted me, and I feel supported. It has been easier to share with you Rainers my family's sadness, than with any of my face-to-face friends and family. You are just a different kind of family, and I get that now. This is therapy for me.

I thank you, ActiveRain Family, for reading this, and allowing me to share my story, Spot's story. I used to think it took incredible courage to allow someone inside your pain. I now see that it just takes comfort.

So after watching the rain fall from my car window, I smiled. I knew I was going to be able to share a story. About that time, I felt my pilot's hand upon my knee, and he gently squeezed saying, "Let's go get a couple of lattes." Somehow it seemed cliche; but that's what we do in the Northwest - solve the world's problems over coffee.

Although this was difficult to write, I am ever so glad I did.

I Failed because of Purple...

You read correctly. I failed because of Purple. How many times have you been exposed to someone else's poor excuses? We all have; in fact, we have all used lame excuses...

A long time ago, when I first became a real estate agent I was terrified. First of not getting any business, and then once business came, I was nervous about getting the business - what would I do next? In the beginning, I called Expireds. I guess we all do, right? I called one, and it went well. I was informative, I handled objections delicately yet firmly. I was going to get this listing, I was sure of it.

I was to make a follow-up call. I knew that when I called, I would be setting up an appointment. But I did not have a decent Listing Presentation. I put the call off a day and tried creating a tailored listing packet for this potential client. I put the call off for two more days. Oddly, the copy place was on the other side of town, and I did not have the right thumb drive. Some publishing program was not working on my home computer, and... another few days went by. I finally got my act together, double-checked the MLS. And would you believe it? The guy had listed with another agent! The nerve...

I was working hard. Or so I thought... I made excuse after excuse because I was scared - scared of having the right packet, scared of giving the presentation, scared of being new, scared of being rejected. I blamed everyone (the gal at the copy place, the Starbuck's barrista who filled my coffee too full so it would spill onto my lap, thus ruining my "presentation" outfit...) and everything (home computer without the right publishing program, the lack of a decent cell phone, forgetting to add my college degree to my resume page of the listing presentation...)

Fast forward to a couple of months ago...

I was sitting on a conference call for an Accountability Group. We were speaking to a recruiting team leader down in California, who remains ever-optimistic, motivating, and on fire. He clearly presents a case for the art and game of sales, and then challenges us to develop a retort.

He preaches against bad excuses in this group. "I couldn't call 12 people because of this or that". "The other agent didn't ask the right questions." And he would interrupt folks and say "Purple". It would stump anyone trying to get through their list of excuses. Purple. It was annoying. But it was also irritating to hear feeble excuses. Comic really. Because when you are on the listening side of things, bad excuses can really sound silly.

Whatever the excuse may be, just tell the truth. Say you did not know what to do. Say you were caught off guard without an answer, any answer. It is okay to say you were lazy, you were scared, you gave up. Because anything less than the truth is an excuse. Excuses are senseless and weak; they do not explain anything. They are utterly useless. Just like the word Purple when it is thrown out there in the cosmos with no noun to describe. Just Purple. Makes you grin, doesn't it?

When throwing out a lame excuse, you might as well be saying Purple. It makes about as much sense. In our office now, when someone is dragging their feet, not meeting their goals, getting fussy, we just say Purple out loud. It makes people stop and say "what"? Then it dawns on them what they are saying. It works. Try it sometime. (I even say it to my children who are 6 & 4, and it silences them).

We can see through it most of the time. And if we as agents can, then our clients can. The next time you find yourself making an excuse to a fellow agent or a client. Ask youself this quesion: Self, could someone just yell out Purple to me right now? If you answered Yes to yourself, then stop speaking, take a deep breath, and tell the truth.

Even if the truth is wistful, it is more respectable.

It's Logger, not Lumberjack

In 1962 the Deming Log Show captivated its first audience. Designed to be a fundraiser for severely injured Loggers, who historically do not have medical coverage, the Deming Log Show has entertained thousands and helps hundreds of families.

Ranked 3rd in the Top 10 most Dangerous Jobs (according to CareerBuilder.com), Loggers have a particularly life-threatening job. Their duties include cutting down and transporting timber. As such, the very nature of their greatly-needed work places them in constant jeopardy of being killed by heavy, falling objects like chains, chokers, tower lines, branches, and of course, trees. Their risk is increased by the steep hills on which they log and the hazardous weather in which they so very often work, including rain, sleet, snow, and wind.

Following in his family's footsteps, my husband was a Logger through college so he could pay for his flight time (funny, the second most dangerous job is landing on an aircraft carrier - I guess someone else besides me thought that hurling something moving 400 mph onto something the size of a postage stamp while said stamp is moving up and down by dozens of feet might be a tad perilous!) I promise you, however, that he does not have a death-wish!

Here in the Pacific Northwest, Logging is a way of life. Washington is known as the Evergreen State for a reason. The area of Whatcom County is only a little over 100 years old. My husband's family, the Zenders, were one of the founding families of this beautiful area. In fact, my husband's grandfather had ten siblings - eight brothers and two sisters. The nine boys made up a semi-professional baseball team named the Deming Loggers, who dominated local leagues and finished second in their national tournament in Wichita, KS, in 1956. Had they won that game, they would have gone on to play in the world tournament in Milwaukee.I should brag that four of those brothers were recruited by the majors - Yankees, Cardinals, and the Dodger organization.

The concern would never be winning the championship, but the work at home here in Whatcom County. You see, these brothers also owned Zee Brothers, a Logging company - one of the most famous in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, while many across the area knew them as baseball players, they were also well-known as one of the "slickest high-lead" (according to Jack Kintner, writer for the Mt. Baker Experience, summer 2007) logging outfits in the state!

The Zender brothers logging company made quite a name for itself around this area, and earned a quite a stellar reputation in the logging industry, but also as genuinely good human beings. Long retired, and down a few brothers, you can find these guys around Deming, Washington, active in their church and sitting as Patriarchs to their very large families indeed.

Every second weekend in June, the Deming Log Show provides breath-taking entertainment to an eager audience. Showcasing the basics of Logging, the Loggers put on a great program filled with healthy and fun competition in a variety of categories. From log-climbing, ma & pa buckin' (husband and wife team tree sawing), and log rolling to BBQ and pimped-out chainsaws, spectators are never slighted an amazing feat of strength and courage.

You will see suspenders, cut-off Dickies at the ankle, and corks (the boots Loggers wear), and when you watch these very brave individuals, it will occur to you as it did me, how very strong yet agile Loggers are.

This year, the 47th Log Show will be June 13-14. With over 30 events in a four hour period, you will witness both old and new methods and technology in the Logging industry. Very popular in our neck of the woods - no pun intended - guests attend from all over Washington and British Columbia.

I had no idea when entering the Zender clan back in 1994, that it was such an iconic family. I am proud to be a member of the Zender family, and it warms my heart to know that my husband followed in some amazing footsteps. The tales of his experiences shed merely a dim light to the dangers of Logging, and he alone had many close calls. This event in June raises money for those families whose Loggers were badly injured. I am proud to support such a non-profit. Had I not married Tony (the Logger-Fighter Pilot husband) and become familiar with the colorful and humble history of his great family, I would never have given Logging a second thought. I would still be calling them lumberjacks. And by the way, do not ever call a Logger a Lumberjack!

I will be purchasing ad space in the program with the phrase - Treating Every Client Like Family. Just Google the Zender name here in Whatcom County; it's amazing. My father was performing a background check on my husband's family before I got married (that's a Blog for another time) and he did not meet a person who had not heard of the Zender name! The Perfect Storm

Around the country, local and regional associations of Realtors have seen a decline in their membership. Here in the Pacific Northwest, Whatcom County specifically, we Realtors were once almost 900 strong during the real estate pinnacle of '04 to '06. Almost sadly, only just over 750 agents remain, with a possibility that the number could fall to under 700 by year's end. I do not write this with a heavy heart; this is not gloomy news. In fact, it is a substantial imperative. The industry needs this healthy distillation because only the true professionals will weather the storm.

Part-timers and less skilled agents will likely progress to other lines of work. The punch line? Clients now have at their disposal a concentrated group of seasoned, dedicated, and loyal agents to assist them in buying and selling real estate. The objective? Be a part of this small club of proficient Realtors.

The market's message is "stick it out". If we as agents can withstand the winds of difficult economics and an industry hit hard with financial damage, we can restore happiness and much needed faith into our clients. Who do we need to serve the most (besides our obvious 'A' clients)? First-time home buyers. With our keen knowledge of the market coupled with the help of the economic stimulus plan, first-timers will have the necessary confidence to hop off the fence, and buy.

First-time home purchasers need to cease procrastinating, and end their fruitless wait for lowering interest rates. Fluctuating currently, the rates are only expected to rise ultimately. Some speculate that this is in order to pay for the high cost of the economic stimulus plan. Moreover, it is advantageous to buy now. Once interest rates increase, the first-time home buyer will lose purchasing power. It is our job as discerning Realtors to point out to our first-time buyers that they need this leverage.

I will not say we have a booming market here in Whatcom County, but it has remained successful. We still have market strength. Our property price adjustments have been moderate as we have managed to maintain a mild equilibrium. This is due partially to our "think and buy local" philosophy, which has allowed many small business to flourish. Long standing loyalty by Bellinghamsters to buy local has contributed to a healthier market. Low unemployment in Whatcom County has certainly impacted our local economy positively. So we have not seen the high stress to the local economy that other regions have.

While interest rates are in a state of flux, we look to house prices. House prices have fallen and are still falling. We have not yet seen the bottom - another factor to persuade your first-time home buyer. Low interest rates that may increase, falling house prices, and tax incentives... separately not that exciting, but altogether, a perfect storm for a first-time home purchase.

Once the tide changes, and our economy begins to heal, prime buying conditions like what we see before us will not be in the forecast for a long, long time. Encourage your first-timers to purchase now before they are in a position to regret not doing so, because now you are a part of an elite group of agents left over after a nuclear fallout for our industry. Who will your clients turn to? Be there for them. This is their time of need. And you have their undivided attention.

Happy Birthday Marine... and Happy Veteran's Day to All...

November 10 is a day of celebration and remembrance. It marks the 233rd birthday of the United Sates Marine Corps. So to all Marines, I say "Happy Birthday Marine!"

For twelve years, I was proud to call myself a Marine Corps wife. Now that my husband is out and serves in the Navy Reserves, I find that this time of year, I miss the annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball. Something about getting all dressed up, experiencing the pomp and circumstance was such a rush. Although very festive, there was a time during the evening, when the mood took on a more somber and humble tone. During every Birthday Ball, after the speeches and obligatory comments, there was always the mention of the POW/MIA table. If you are not familiar with this tradition, it is a beautiful yet moving homage to all those warriors who are currently unaccounted for.

The table is set for those who cannot be with us, and are thus remembered. The table is usually small in size, with a lit candle representing the frailty of one prisoner against his oppressors. It is covered in a white tablecloth, signifying the purity of one's heart and intentions with which they honorably answer their country's call to arms. The black ribbon around the candle reminds us of those who will not be returning. The single rose in a vase memorializes the faith the families keep alive, awaiting their warrior's return. The yellow ribbon tied delicately around that same vase is a reminder of the ribbons often worn for veterans until returning home. In the place setting, sits a bread plate with one slice of lemon, representing their bitter fate, should they not be found. Next to the lemon is salt, reminding us of the tears shed by the families. The glasses in the place setting are inverted, as they are not here to make a toast. The chair is empty, as they cannot be here for the special night. Their chair remains visible, however, in hopes of their return.

For those of us privileged enough to be a part of such a touching ceremony, we are invited to not remember the ghosts of the past, but rather all warriors in and out of combat. It is at this time, the candle is extinguished, and silence and quiet solemnity fill the air.

To bring the mood in the room to a more cheerful feeling, the oldest Marine in the room is introduced alongside the youngest Marine in the room. It is a time when we are reminded of the courage and enthusiasm a young warrior expresses, as well as the stalwart durability of a more mature Marine. The two then share Marine Corps birthday cake. The cake is cut, with the first piece going to the Guest of Honor, the second going to the Oldest Marine, who then takes the piece and passes it to the Youngest Marine, to signify the passing of knowledge and experience, but further emphasizing that the Marines take care of the young Marines first, before satisfying themselves. The third piece is then accepted by the Oldest Marine and eaten. I only write of the Marines, as that was what I am exposed to.

On the Eve of Veteran's Day, I am remembering all past and current service members. I will sport a yellow ribbon all day, and I encourage you to do the same. The Marines are celebrating a magnificent accomplishment, ever since the Continental Congress signed two battalions into being: known as the Continental Marines, they were to fight for independence on shore and at sea. So I would like to close with another Happy Birthday to all Marines, but more importantly, a Happy Veteran's Day for all service members, and a resounding Thank You for your brave service to this great nation.

Today and especially tomorrow are times to reflect on our freedom and the great sacrifices our service members have made and are making for all of us.

Take a special look around tomororw. You will notice folks wearing ball caps, jackets, or patches showcasing the different services, squadrons, units, platoons, warships, aircraft carriers, tankers, battalions, squads, submarines, artillery, infantry, intelligence, medical corps, special ops, Green Berets, Pathfinder, Ranger, POW/MIA, pilot wings, jump wings, Navy Seal, Marine Force Recon, military police, Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, and many others. If you notice these, you are seeing Veterans. And if you are in the presence of a veteran, you are in the presence of someone great, who made a decision one day to answer this country's call for freedom. Remember to just say, "thank you". Baskets of Love and Support...

As we start the holiday season, it is not only important to remember those special people in our lives, but all special people in all our lives, and that includes this nation's warriors stationed around the world assuring our safety and freedom.

It is a difficult time of year for our troops as this is a time when they miss us the most. And we are aware even more so that they are not with us, especially as we set the Thanksgiving table, and notice we aet for one less family member. As we near Veteran's Day on the 11th of November, I am moved by the loneliness so many of the military families will be experiencing.
