My first MAD TV Commercial

Last Sunday i shot my first TV commercial with Mad888, with Sean Lim as the director. Under the supervision of our Chief Creative Officer - Nonon Del Carmen, Cay Acuna our VP for Accounts & Malu Sadiarin. Skillfully organized by Joan Dianzon from client's side - who made much of the production possible. Even willing to do a rain-dance to stop Saturday's rain from spilling over to our Sunday shoot. Luckily when the rain came in the afternoon, we were all done with our outdoor shots. The small production crew did their job well and the talents gave their best! I think, in spite the challenges everyone had a good time. I certainly did!

I look forward to seeing this commercial air soon!

My youngest brother & me being goofy with excitement being by the beach!

Last week for Holy Week break - me, my family, plus more went to Zambales to enjoy the beach! It was really nice spending time with family & a few guests. Swimming in clear ocean waters as strong waves slam on us and carry us back to shore. It was loads of fun!

But the beach by the resort didn't compare when we went island hopping and went to Capones Island the next day.

The water was astonishingly crystal clear and the sand was lighter - it was paradise! We only stayed for a few hours but we had the very best time! My brothers hunted for crabs and some fish that skipped through water, my sister collected shells & found sea snails, my parents took a nice romantic stroll by the beach as i swam and dove to my heart's content.

After our island hopping, we went back to the resort and cooked lunch. After which we rushed to go visit my Lolo's house who lives in Zambales to eat the lunch we prepared with them.

Our two day vacation, although not perfect - with my sister forgetting her sun glasses, my Mom went missing & going on her own lunch-time road trip, and my brother dunking his non-waterproof camera underwater! The trip was a total blast! I can't wait for our next family trip...

Wisdom from the Wolff

I like amassing knowledge and wisdom. And i just finished watching a great talk by a legend of European design named Michael Wolff. He talks about a lot of valuable things that designers and fledgling students can learn from. He discusses key qualities that designers need. He expounds on his philosophies and his ideas about everything. It is really a very inspiring and educational talk.

And i really appreciated when he said...

"I know that being right is a pretty deadly thing.
And I know that thinking that you know what to do
is not a very useful thing."

I agree that by assuming this you effectively eliminate the experience of ever learning and growing. I like that his views contradict the norm and challenges convention - he is definitely a true creative!

I just remembered another wonderful thing that he said, which is...he respects boldness, but disrespects arrogance. He explains that with boldness there is humility and with arrogance a complete absence of such. Coming from a man with such great achievements and advocating humility is very admirable. Especially coming from an industry of giant egos and puffed-up personas. Brilliant!

I went MAD!!

After a brief yet very restful vacation. Sleeping endlessly and waking up late. Bumming in front of the TV. Going to the beach, which i haven't done in a very long time. That i totally enjoyed! The sand was clean and the water was very clear and cold. It was perfect! I also had time to spend with my family. Bonding with my mom and spending some time with my sister. I also had a chance to spend time with someone special to me.

Anyhoot...

Today i am starting my duties as Senior Art Director at MAD888. I am excited to see what accounts i will be handling and how the work flow will be. I'm pretty sure it will be different and there will be much adjustment. But it's all part of moving forward.

I'm just orienting myself with this Mac that they gave me. Doing my best to make it my own, so that i can work quicker and more efficient.

I know this will be a great new start. So, let the adventure begin!

I am humbled and blessed being part of McCann. I have truly learned a lot and have definitely accomplished a lot. I also had the opportunity to meet and work with a lot of the industries top photographers, film makers, directors, cinematographers, casters, make-up artists, production designers, productions outfits & crews. It is truly an amazing experience.

I will always be grateful to the talented creatives, hard-working accounts, patient print-production team, diligent secretaries - notably Tita Shirley, the courteous cleaning staff, the always jolly security personel and the 33rd floor manang in McCann.

But it is time to move on and move forward. And i will be taking with me the good that i have learned and venture 'to infinity & beyond'... :-)

I haven't really been visiting my DA page as much as i used to, or as much as i would like. But not too long ago i discovered, with great delight! That my good old Darth Vader artwork was featured - twice!

What i love about it, is that the artwork is old and has been in my DA gallery for ages - nonetheless it still gets noticed and receives heart-warming appreciations. And to each and everyone that appreciates and features my artwork - thank you so very much!!! :-)

I unfortunately have been a unwitting participant and victim of SPEC! As a young art director with my modest earnings it is easy to fall victim to this scam. Here is what SPEC is and why it's wrong. Creatives take notice and BEWARE!

What is spec work?

Basically, spec work is any kind of creative work rendered and submitted, either partial or completed, by a designer to a prospective client/employer before taking steps to secure both their work and an equitable fee. Under these conditions, a designer will often be requested to submit work under the guise of either a contest or an entry exam on actual, existing jobs as a “test” of their skill. In addition, the designer normally unwittingly loses all rights to their creative work because they failed to protect themselves by means of a signed binding contract or agreement. The client/employer often uses this freely gained work as they see fit without fear of legal repercussion.

Why is spec work unethical?

The designer in essence works free of charge and with an often falsely advertised, overinflated promise for future employment; or is given other insufficient forms of compensation. Usually these glorified prizes or “carrots” appear tantalizing for creative communicators just starting out, ending with encouraging examples like “good for your portfolio” or “gain recognition.” The reality is that they often yield little extra work, profit or referrals. Moreover they often must sign a contract unwittingly waiving their valuable creative rights and ownership of their work to the ones promoting this system. A verbal agreement is ineffective in protecting the rights of the designer in a court of law. As a result the client/employer will often employ other designers using similar unprincipled tactics to change and/or resell the creative work as their own. This also promotes the practice of designers ridiculously undercharging themselves in the hopes of “outbidding” any potential rivals, devaluing both their skills and those of the graphics industry in the process. Promoting this method encourages some clients/employers to continue preying on uninformed creatives for menially valued labor.

As creatives let us stop SPEC from spreading. It undervalues our profession and undermines our livelihood.
