You can sign us up for this one. Volvo is testing a prototype S60 sedan equipped with a Formula One-type Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) at its Sweden headquarters and recently took some folks from Green Car Reports for a test drive.

While noting that the KERS’ rear-axle mounted flywheel that stores braking energy and transfers it to the drivetrain could be loud, Green Car Reports unmistakably enjoyed the experience of the extra kick the system provided to the car’s 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. In short, the S60′s KERS system adds 80 horsepower to the car’s 254 and, as a result, cut about a second and a half off of the car’s usual 0-100 km (62 miles per hour) acceleration time of about seven seconds.

Three years ago, Volvo was awarded a $1 million Swedish government grant to develop such a system and, early on, said KERS could cut fuel use by as much as 20 percent. Volvo said last month that it had a prototype in the works.

Overall, Chinese implied oil demand in April rose by 2.7% y/y to 9.6 mb/d. The growth rate of 300 thousand b/d is lower compared to the 800 thousand b/d average seen in Q4 last year and follows through from an inventory equation in March which showed a build of 2% m/m.

The Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid has had a charmed life so far. Qualifying for California HOV lane status and getting impressive range and miles per gallon equivalent numbers are all bound to help its market image. Now, the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi has earned a five-star Overall Vehicle Score, the highest possible, from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

NHTSA tests measured vehicle performance and safety in frontal and side-impact crash test, along with resistance to rollovers. The plug-in hybrid follows the Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid, which already received five-star safety ratings. Ford highlighted another safety perk in its press release (see below) – the Personal Safety System with safety belt technologies and advanced front impact airbags.

So far, the Ford Fusion Hybrid has sold ten times more units than the Fusion Energi. The April sales total for the Fusion Hybrid was 3,625 units sold versus 364 for the Fusion Energi. But it’s still very early in the game, and the Fusion Hybrid has a potentially huge problem to deal with that could hurt sales.

Rebuffed in EU, Argentina Aims for US Biodiesel Market

Shut out of selling biodiesel the the European Union, Argentina is now trying its hand at getting into the U.S. biodiesel market. Reuters reports the Argentinians believe it will be easier to meet U.S. environmental laws than overcome Europe’s block

“We’re going through the process of getting EPA approval, which takes some time,” Luis Zubizarreta, president of the Argentine Biofuels Chamber, told the Reuters Latin America Investment Summit.

“We’re well-positioned and we’re very confident of achieving this. In the next few months, we should have that approval.”

Argentina is the world’s top exporter of biodiesel – made from soybean oil – but shipments to its main client, the EU, plunged this year after the bloc launched investigations into possible dumping by Argentine suppliers.

The European block on the South American green fuel has cut in half Argentina’s production. If the EPA approves Argentinian bodiesel for RINs, the article says it would obviously help that country’s market while helping U.S. refiners, importers and others comply with biofuel blending requirements.
