Design Initiative Forced to Close After 20 Years

Support organisation Design Initiative has closed its doors due to lack of funding. The organisation ran for 20 years and supported thousands of designers in the North West.

Offices in Manchester and Liverpool have now closed and its four staff members have been made redundant. Design Initiative its Arts funding pulled in March 2011 and continued to lose funding from various sources ever since.

Originally founded in 1992 as Liverpool Design Initiative, the organisation later opened offices in 2000 and soon branched out further into the North West. They provided information and advice for a large number of designers. In a statement Design Initiative said it was successful in "directly assisting 2,300 designers, makers and artists to generate sales to the value of £15 million and helping to create over 150 jobs".

Roger Morris, chair of Design Initiative's board, said: "During its 20 years in existence, Design Initiative has had a substantial impact on the growth and continued success of the design and contemporary craft sectors."

"It has enabled thousands of designers to establish, grow and sustain their businesses. It has also retained the talent of designers, makers and artists in the region, to ensure they are part of a thriving community and a centre for dynamic creative practice."

"The organisation would like to take this opportunity to thank all of its staff, funders and sponsors - past and present - for their support over the last 20 years. Without their efforts, Design Initiative would not have been able to accomplish what it has done."

Acas releases guide on social networking at work

A new guide to the employment aspects of blogs, Twitter and Facebook has been launched after complaints that workers were abusing social media.

The guide has been created by Acas, an organisation devoted to preventing and resolving employment disputes. Taking nine months to complete, the company describe the report as a response to "the growing problem" posed by social networking sites.

Six out of 10 (55%) staff members now visit social networking sites during working hours via their computer or smartphone each day, with some taking the opportunity to post derogatory remarks about employers and co-workers.

Acas advises employers not to be "heavy-handed" in penalising offending staff members, and to be aware of the context of any behaviour.

John Taylor, chief executive of Acas, said: “If an employer is too tough, they need to consider the potential impact of any negative publicity. Heavy-handed monitoring can cause bad feeling and be time consuming.

"A manager wouldn't follow an employee down the pub to check on what he or she said to friends about their day at work. Just because they can do something like this online, doesn't mean they should."

Taylor advised employers should consult with staff over the use of the internet at work and set clear ground rules, making clear the potential consequences of breaching company policy.

"Online conduct should not differ from off-line conduct. Employees should assume that everything they say on the internet could be made public, and should think whether they want their colleagues or boss to read it. They might not mean it, but what they post could end up being seen by billions of people worldwide."

A recent survey by myjobgroup found that only 14 per cent of those polled considered themselves less productive as a result of social media, with 10 per cent claimed that using Facebook and Twitter at work boosted their productivity.

Social Media and Television complimentary, not competitive

A recent poll completed by 4,000 UK residents has revealed that 54% simultaneously watch television whilst browsing social networking sites.

Internet shopping is the nation's second favourite past time whilst watching television (45%), closely followed by instant messaging and catching up on e-mails (40%).

The results - conducted by think tank Deloitte - also show that the average Briton spends 188 hours a month (almost 8 days) watching television, compared to just 3.3 hours on social networks. In the report, Deloitte write "television should embrace, rather than fear, social networks".

James Bates, Deloitte media partner, said: “Some television executives worry about competition for eyeballs, yet for others the concern is whether their programmes are generating sufficient social buzz. In reality, social networks complement the television viewing experience rather than compete with it. A significant amount of social network activity occurs concurrently with television consumption and television programmes provide important topics of conversation for social networks.”

Founding partner of creative company 101, Laurence Green, told the Telegraph: “Sharper alignment of a brand's TV laydown with its website – for example, by a clothes retailer making sure an advertised item is only one click away in real time – might therefore be a better allocation of limited resource than trying to win friends on Facebook.”

Creator of hit television shows Father Ted, and The IT Crowd, Graham Linehan, has recently commented on the positive relationship between Twitter and television, saying the micro-blogging site has "put television back in the crowd".
