Boulogne-sur-Mer is the largest fishing port in France and so the emphasis, as you would expect, is very much on seafood and all things connected with the sea. Apart from the stalls along the edge of the port, there is also Capécure, the commercial port where the fish is auctioned, frozen, salted, smoked and generally processed. The Chamber of Commerce organizes guided tours for groups and it is fascinating to visit – and you can also buy fish to take home.

The popular resort of Le Touquet evolved from an isolated moor, inhabited only by wild animals, into one of the most chic of the northern seaside resorts which reached its peak in the 1920s. In 1819, the state put up for sale 1,600 hectares of land. It was bought in 1837 by two Frenchmen, Alphonse Daloz and Alyon, who tried, first with a distillery and a potato industry to make it profitable. After many attempts, Alphonse Daloz planted a pine forest in 1855 and in 1852, two lighthouses arrived, providing employment for six families of lighthouse keepers. This was the beginning of Le Touquet Paris-Plage. It was in 1874, however, that it occurred to Villemessant who owned the newspaper ‘Le Figaro’ that this could be the perfect situation for a sea-side resort and the first villas were built in 1882. In the early days, however, Le Touquet was virtually deserted in the winter and it was only when John Whitley and Allen Stoneham decided to base the resort on sports, that Le Touquet finally grew up. It acquired a casino, a golf course, a hippodrome and tennis courts.

General Show Information

EDF Energy Ideal Home Show 2009 is, as usual, bursting full of innovative ideas for the homeowners of today and tomorrow.
Reflecting the issues affecting the current generation of home owners and renters, the EDF Energy Ideal Home Show 2009 will offer effective solutions to inspire visitors to learn to make the most of the homes they’re in, reduce their cost of living and offer simple, creative ways to cut their carbon footprints.
Takes Place on 20th March – 13th April 2009 at Earls Court, London.
Opening times: 11am – 9pm weekdays and 10am – 6pm weekends. NOTE – Late night weekday openings, come after work at a reduced price – there are lots of evening activities and events taking place.
To keep in line with the money saving objectives of the show, ticket prices will stay the same for the third year running, costing £14 on weekdays and £16 on weekends. For locals and commuters who want to make the most of the extended evening programming and events, a reduced ticket price of £5 will be available after 5pm on any day of the week.

Alison Cork’s Bargain Hunter Live! – Alison Cork, TV presenter and journalist writing for Homes & Property Really Useful Column & Saturday Telegraph Bargain Tips – chance to see and maybe take home her current best buy bargains.
Smarter Living Showcase – interactive theatre set with live demonstrations of the latest products for the home, especially those which offer energy or space saving potential. Like the household boiler that uses no fuel! Shows every 15 minutes.
Celebrity Kitchen Chefs – live demonstrations by top celebrity Chefs including Raymond Blanc, Aldo Zilli, Rustie Lee, Sophie Grigson, Cyrus Todiwala
Games Lounge – for boys that get bored easily, we’ve created a crèche for men! Chill out with a pint of real ale, game machines and a Scalextric replica of Silverstone, where there are prizes for the top positions on the grid!
The Beauty Bar—and girls can chill out with champers and sushi in the Beauty Bar. Amongst an array of self indulgent attractions, ‘Colour Me Beautiful’ will be on hand to offer individual colour coordination consultations, and the London College of Beauty Therapy will be offering free mini manicures.
Innovation Nation – Concept Products – celebrating its 10th year, the innovative venture returns to give young professional designers the opportunity to showcase their ideas. This year it revolves around making the best use of space and finding practical solutions to saving energy.
Prince’s Trust – The Prince’s Trust ‘business programme’ will be exhibiting at the Show. This programme provides money and support to people wanting to start up their own businesses, and has helped more than 70,000 disadvantaged young people into business through low-interest loans and mentoring since 1983. Fifty-eight per cent of our businesses are still trading into their third year.
