We are excited to welcome Cyndi Ingle, the creator of Cyndi's List and nationally known genealogical speaker, to fill us in on using the Internet in ways we have not even thought about. We are not just talking Google and Ancestry. Cyndi will be introducing you to the hidden web, using the Internet more successfully, social networking to move your research forward, and some of her favorite resources.

Cyndi Ingle is the owner and creator of Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet, www.CyndisList.com, a categorized index to over 333,000 online resources. Cyndi's List is an award-winning site, which helps millions of visitors worldwide. Cyndi, a genealogist for more than 35 years, is a past-member of the board of directors for the National Genealogical Society. She is the author of three books for genealogical research on the Internet titled, Netting Your Ancestors, Cyndi's List and Planting Your Family Tree Online: How to Create Your Own Family History Web Site.

Genealogical Society Meeting

Are you thinking about your ancestors? Do you want to learn how and where to find information regarding your ancestors? Answers are often found during meetings of the Bartlesville Genealogical Society. The next meeting is Monday evening, September 14, in the Bartlesville Public Library’s upstairs meeting room (Conference Room A). The public is invited.

During the Beginner’s Corner at 6:30 pm, Rita Bibles will discuss “Collecting Documents”. She will instruct on how to gather data from your attic or basement, old address books, baby books, obituaries, a family Bible, etc. She will also touch on Vital Records like birth, death and marriage records, and how to get the most from a census record.

At 7:00 PM, Pat Dempsey Kerbs will be the guest speaker. Ms. Kerbs has served as a designer and framer for over 20 years. She operated her first shop in the downtown Bartlesville area (Pat’s Framing & Uptown Gallery) for 18 years, and now has reopened in a remodeled building that was formerly her dad’s shop building in Dewey. Always being conscious of how her customers feel about the items they bring her, she has specialized into the world of conservation and preserving art, prints, memorabilia, military items, and precious family collectables. Pat will discuss instructions on choosing the right glass, the perfect mat, and the acid free backing behind the art, when to use it, the reason behind it, as well as the added value and longevity acid free backing will bring to your art and the items you are having framed. She will explain the many types of glue, tapes, and mats, even frames that can acid burn and deteriorate your art. One point that will be discussed is “Why you never put glass directly on a photo or art piece” and she will answer the question, “My art is old and already acidic, is it possible that can be changed?”

All meetings and services of the Bartlesville Genealogical Society are free and open to anyone interested in beginning or continuing their family research.

AUGUST ASK A GENEALOGIST DAY

Experienced genealogists will be available on Saturday, August 15, from 9 am to 4 pm in the Local and Family History Room of the Bartlesville Public Library. These genealogists will guide you, whether you are beginning family research or need suggestions to further your research. It is helpful to bring what family information you have and the question or family information you need answered. All assistance is a free service provided by the Bartlesville Genealogical Society.

Do you want to learn how and where to search for information regarding your ancestors? Are you searching for family names and wanting to gain information to further improve your skills? Answers are often found during meetings of the Bartlesville Genealogical Society. The next meeting is Monday evening, August 10, in the Bartlesville Public Library’s upstairs meeting room (Conference Room A). The public is invited.

During the Beginner’s Corner at 6:00 pm, Rita Bibles will discuss, “Starting with Yourself”, how to begin your search for ancestors using pedigree charts and family group sheets. She will be teaching how to interview living relatives for more clues to your genealogical puzzle.

At 6:30 PM, Gene Allen will tell about information available in the National Archives. Mr. Allen started his career writing commercials and scripts for radio, eventually ending in Oklahoma City. After serving two-years in the Army, he returned to WKY-TV in Oklahoma City as a news cameraman, then a reporter and finally as a documentary writer/producer. During his time at WKY-TV the station’s documentary unit won numerous national awards including Outstanding Documentary from the National Society of Journalists, Western Heritage Wrangler (three times) and one national Emmy nomination. He has two published books: Voices on the Wind, a history of early day radio in Oklahoma and Halina, co-author of a Polish girl’s survival of World War II. Currently in progress is The Quaker Sergeants War, a Civil War diary, The Thoughtful Shooter, the biography of an NBC-TV news cameraman, and Four Eyes, a memoir of growing up in the depression-era Ozarks. Mr. Allen says he would be writing more except for the time required to raise his three daughters, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
