4.5 cl Gin

TOM COLLINS:

View in: oz | ml | shots

    * 2 shots / 60 ml / 2 oz Old Tom gin
    * 1 shot / 30 ml / 1 oz lemon juice
    * 1 bar-spoon sugar syrup
    * Build ingredients over ice in a tall glass and top off with soda water. Garnish with a lemon zest twist.

As ever with old cocktails, the origins of the Tom Collins are uncertain and much disputed. Some assert that the drink is so-named because it originally used Old Tom gin, while others believe it was named after the Tom Collins hoax of 1874, a strange happening you can read more about here. Given that the first written occurrence of the Tom Collins, from Jerry Thomas‘ 1876 edition of the Bartender’s Guide, listed brandy, whiskey and gin versions of the drink all under the name Tom Collins I am inclined to believe the later story, but both stories seem perfectly plausible.

Leaving history aside, the drink itself is a simple but tasty drink with a refreshing nature that will make it a perfect libation once the winter months have passed. The lemon provides a nice tart zing, with the sweetness of the sugar syrup and Old Tom pulling back the sourness. The Old Tom remains fairly subtle in the background but does provide an extra depth to the flavours. Enjoyable, but I wanted something a little stronger so the Old Tom can really shine through.

Old Tom is London Dry but sweetened with simple syrup, a style very popular in the ninteenth century. Ol Tom was Originally used to make Tom Collins and other sweet cocktails, but in the twentieth century the sweetness qoutient  seemed to drop a few notches as styled changed.

The original prank went something like this: A friend would run into you on the street and, with great concern, tell you he just overheard someone named Tom Collins at a bar down the street saying hateful and libelous things about you. You race to that bar to confront the bounder, where you would be told that Tom Collins had just left for a bar several blocks away. When you get there, Collins would already have decamped for another joint across town. As you chase all over the city, your friends convulse with laughter.

The Savoy Cocktail Book nævner også John Collins som en Genever baseret cocktail, men stort set alle andre steder inklusiv i The Craft of the Cocktail bliver den beskrevet som en whiskey baseret Tom Collins.

Så er bolden kastet op Kamstrup, jeg håber du griber den og kaster tilbage...

		<description>Hmmm nu havde jeg ellers altid troet at Johh Collins var en whiskey variant. Nu har jeg googled John Collins en smule og har ikke kunne finde et eneste sted hvor John collins laves med Genever. 

Men jeg har stadig ikke helt forstået forskellen på en Tom Collins og en Gin Fizz. Jeg får altid forskellige forklaringer. Måske er det bare at Tom Collins blev lavet med Old Tom gin, der virkelig er utrolig sød. Er tom Colins bare sødere variant af Gin Fizz?</description>
		<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hmmm nu havde jeg ellers altid troet at Johh Collins var en whiskey variant. Nu har jeg googled John Collins en smule og har ikke kunne finde et eneste sted hvor John collins laves med Genever. </p>
<p>Men jeg har stadig ikke helt forstået forskellen på en Tom Collins og en Gin Fizz. Jeg får altid forskellige forklaringer. Måske er det bare at Tom Collins blev lavet med Old Tom gin, der virkelig er utrolig sød. Er tom Colins bare sødere variant af Gin Fizz?</p>

		<description>Ærgerligt at Tom Collins får så få stemmer. Det er jo klart en af de bedste sommerdrinks! Når man sidder i solen med en Tom Collins og andre hyggelige mennesker... Tjaa, så sidder den som regel lige i skabet!

Men vil dog også hurtigt lige nævne, at der jo faktisk er en lille forskel på John og Tom Collins.
