The B&D League held their annual dinner and presentation event on Friday 9 October. Bangor picked up 6 trophies this year.

All matches are scheduled for Saturday mornings starting at 9.30am.

Clubs with floodlights may play their home fixtures on a Tuesday evening starting at 6.30pm (nearest Tuesday to fixture date). It is up to clubs wishing to use floodlights to inform their opponents 14 days prior to the match.

Teams consist of either 4 men or 4 ladies respectively, playing as two doubles pairings. Each pair will play both the pairs of the opposing team. Each tie is the best of three tie-break sets. The winning team is the team with the most matches won. Should the matches finish level, then sets will decide and should sets be equal also, games will decide. If a match is still level a further tie-break set is to be played between a nominated pair from each team. Two points will be awarded to the winning team.

Matches must be completed by Thursday 26 November 2009. Play offs on Saturday 28 November 2009 at 9.30am.

Where are our tennis balls going?  Hit out of the court and not retrieved? Forgotten in peoples pockets? Used outside Club Sessions and lost? We just don’t know.

The Club provides tennis balls for Club Sessions (social tennis) and while we are not unique in this we are a dying breed as not many other Clubs are still providing balls in this way. We’d like to keep doing this as it is something the Club has done for many many years but we need the help of the Members. You can help by:

• Only taking 3 balls onto each each court for play.
• Always retrieving any balls hit out of the courts.
• Bringing the balls in when you run off court to avoid the rain.
• Return all balls to the box in the Clubhouse after play.

Club balls are only to be used during official Club Sessions. You must provide your own balls for private play or ladder play.

Voting for the following year’s Committee usually takes place at this meeting, and relevant office bearers and Committee members provide reports on the previous financial year. It’s also a chance for you to come and have your say on any issues [...]]]> The Club’s AGM will be held on Wednesday, 23 September at 7:00pm in the Clubhouse.

31st August to 19th September

Saturday was finals days in the Club Championships and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day! We kicked off with the Ladies Singles final, Ann Darragh and Lisa Wallace stepped on to the court shortly after 2.00pm ready for battle. Lisa was a heavy favourite but Ann was determined to do herself justice. It was a competitive match with some good rallies and Lisa ran out the winner 6/2 6/3. It’s her second title and she’s gunning for the hat trick next year.

The Mens Singles was between Tim Blomley and Stephen Strickland. Stephen put up a valiant effort but couldn’t break the dominance of Tim’s serve which despite his sore shoulder was bending and swerving all over the place!! Tim won 6/3 6/1 regaining his title for 2009 have missed last years competition.

The Ladies Doubles was one of the most highly anticipated events of the day. Ann Darragh and Alison Nesbitt were up against last years Champions and the number one seeds, Lisa and Lynda Wallace. Ann and Alison were a little overwhelmed by the occasion in the first set losing it in quick time 6/1. However, once the crowd started to get behind them, Ann and Alison seemed to rally. They played some excellent tennis and had a chance to take the match into a third set when they were 5/3 up. As many of you will know, it’s not always easy to close sets out and the Wallaces showed why they’re champions and took the second set to a tiebreak, winning it 7:2. That made it three in a row for the Wallaces. Who will challenge them in 2010?

The Mens Doubles final featured Tim Blomley and Mark Mullan who were playing James Mavitty and Gilbert Nesbitt. It was another entertaining encounter and there were some great rallies although the match was nearly spoiled by a controversial line call in the second set. The crowd were sure that the ball was wide but Tim was not so sure. The video replays were inconclusive but Tim was able to put the call behind him and he and Mark won 6/3 6/2.

The last match of the day was the Mixed Doubles final. In a true David and Goliath encounter Edward Robinson and Joanne McNaney took on Lisa Wallace and James Mavitty. Even with a handicap of -40 on every game Lisa and James raced to early lead and took the first set 6/1. Edward and Joanne did their best to make a comeback in the second but eventually succumbed to the monster hitting of James and Lisa 6/3.

So another Club Championships has come to a successful end. Thank-you to everyone who entered the tournament, to the Committee for sanctioning the tournament and to all the other Club members who didn’t play but gave up court time to allow matches to be played. Pictures and video from finals day will be available soon.

There was a some very impressive dance moves on show from Phil Mullan and our newly trained barman Mark kept everyone in Margaritas all evening. There was a also a bit of karaoke (see video) and it’s probably best that we gloss over that quickly (hee hee!!)

Glowear is so in this year!!

Thanks again to everyone who came on Saturday hope you had a great time. We’re going to try the party thing again in the run up to Christmas and we’ll be picking a date soon so you’ll all have plenty of time to get the date into your calendar and most importantly get your tickets!!

The Thank-Yous
An event like this took a great deal of preparation and a huge amount of help during the week. The Tournament Organising Committee would like to thank everyone who was involved and would also like to express their gratitude to the entire Club Membership and the Club Committee for giving up so much court time for this event.

We’re already looking forward to next year which our Tournament Director, Michael Heaslip, assures us is going to “bigger and better” so we’ll be looking for your help and assistance again.
