The cycling community in Baltimore has been pretty busy over the last week or two. I thought I would catch folks up who may or may not have been paying attention to it all.

1. Our good friend Liam has started a petition to the City Council, MICA and UB administrators to uphold Council Bill 09-0433, Complete Streets, in the design of the Midtown Streetcape project. This is a great opportunity to let our city government and these major institutions know important bikes lanes are to this community. Learn more and sign the petition here.

2. Baltimore City Department of Transportation conducted their latest round of bike counts. The counting was completed by 26 volunteers who collected data on how many cyclists passed their location from 7:30am to 9:30am and again from 4pm to 6pm. The counts were done January 10th through the 12th and the results were rather amazing. A total of 1,466 bikes were counted, a 137% increase over last year. More details found here. Thanks to all the volunteers who make this count happen, this information is invaluable to our community.

3. Bike Maryland has been very busy the last few weeks. With the recent start of the 2012 legislative session, there are a lot of opportunities to lend your support and voice to making Maryland a more bike and pedestrian friendly. You can get all the latest information at bikemd.org, but I’ll mention a few of the highlights. Bike Maryland is looking for you to lend your voice and let your representative know that you value federal funding for biking and walking. Details and petition here. Bike Maryland is also hosting cyclists for a Pro-Bike Lobby night in Annapolis February 6th. This is a great opportunity to meet with State legislators and let them know, face-to-face, how important bike infrastructure and safety is to you. Details and registration information here.

BBW will CLOSED Sunday and Monday January 15th and 16th for Annual Planning

Baltimore Bicycle Works will be holding our annual planning meeting this Sunday and Monday, January 15th and 16th and as such the shop will be CLOSED both of those days.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, but please be assured we will be using this time to strengthen our organization and create strategies for continuing to improve your experience here.

The shop will re-open Tuesday with our normal hours of 11am to 7pm. Thanks so much for you patience as we strive to make 2012 the best yet for BBW and our customers.

Brompton Oratory Jacket Nominated for “Designs of the Year 2012”

This week London’s The Design Museum announced their nominees for Designs of the Year 2012. Mixed in among such notable designs as Kate Middleton’s wedding dress was Brompton’s Oratory Jacket. Congratulations to Brompton and their designer Will Carleysmith. Want to learn more about the Oratory Jacket and what makes it’s design so award winning? Brompton has a entire webpage devoted to such an explanation, and you may be amazed by how much this jacket can do.

New Year Rides

This weekend, Team BBC will be leading several rides to help you start the New Year right!

On Saturday morning a mountain bike ride will leave from the Rolling Road trail head in Patapsco Park at 9:30am. Intermediate to expert level riders are best suited for this outing. The ride is expected to last from 1 to 3 hours and be about 15 miles.

On Sunday morning a road ride will be leaving from here (BBW) and rolling north at a conversational pace. Riders can also meet this group at Meadowood park around 10:35. This ride will be paced at about 13 to 15 mph, no hammer fest, so you may want to bring an extra layer.

Flat Repair Class: Tuesday December 20th

Join us Tuesday, December 20th, at 7pm for our monthly flat repair class. These classes are FREE and open to all.

The class covers the basics of removing a wheel, removing your tire, assessing what gave you the flat, repairing the flat, and reinstalling the tube, tire and wheel. As well as some other basic roadside repair basics.
