Thanks again for stopping by the baliwaves.com to get the latest news on surfing and weather conditions from the No.1 surfing holiday island of Bali.

This morning we did a quick surf recon on the Outer Reefs here in Tuban, just to check wave height, swell direction and wind. There were a few waves coming through in the waist to head high range between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. But with a solid High tide approaching we decided on heading back down to Uluwatu. As you can see in this current gallery I shot this morning there was no shortage of tube rides. Every now and again there were some double head high set waves hitting both the Main Peak and Temple sections. I’d have to take an educated guess that the Racetrack section at Uluwatu will be producing some even better tube rides later this afternoon if the swell hangs in there.

Surfing conditions are once again perfect today with straight off-shore wind between Kuta and Uluwatu. Coming out of the E – ESE between 6-11knot.

Tidal info for today had us down for a 0.5mtr Low @ 6.00am this morning then filling in with a 2.5mtr High around 12 noon. Then finishing off the day with another reef exposing 0.1mtr Low just before sunset.

Weather wise we’ve had a mainly hot and sunny day here along Bali’s south west coast. Temperature wise it would have been between 29 – 31 degree’s Celsius along the beach.

Today sms surf report from the G-Land Surf Camp said that wave height was still holding in the head to double head high class. Money Tree’s and the Launching Pad lining up the best. 4 surfers in the water at 7.30am.
The number of surfers visiting G-Land are way way below average this season so it could be the perfect time to slip over there.

Hello crew and thanks for hanging around for todays news on surfing and weather conditions here on the happiest little holiday island of them all, Bali.

Well this mornings surf check on the Outer Reefs wasn’t looking real impressive although there was still the odd waist chest to high plus wave breaking between Kuta Reef and Airport left. The tide was running in for a big high at the time and Airport Left was looking the best out the 3 main sections. I decided to jump in the boat with a couple of friends and work or way down to the southern end of the island and kill two birds with one stone.

The first wave you come to down on the bukit is at Balangan. Balangan looked ok after the tide had peaked and started to run back out. I counted around 25 heads with some nice little waves peeling off in the chest to over head class, There were a few surfers splashing around in the shore break at Dreamland and another 6 riders on Bingin. The middle section of Impossible’s was walling off in the chest to head high plus region. While Padang Padang was only just breaking onto the reef at knee height. Uluwatu looked to have had the best waves with head to well over head waves on the Main Peak while the tide was running in and then Racetrack on the afternoon low.

Surfing conditions have been at their best all day here on the holiday island. Coming out of the E – ESE between 5 – 10knot.

Tidal info for today had a 2.4mtr High @ 11.30am and then draining off the reef with a 0.1mtr Low @ 6.00pm.

Weather wise it’s been nice to see a mainly blue sky out there today but still some cloud about at times. Temperature wise the mercury would have been around 30 degree’s Celsius.

We’ve also received another sms surf report from the crew at the G-Land Surf Camp saying that wave height has also backed off some over there today. Around the head to over head high range breaking on Kongs and the top end of Money Tree’s, 4 surfers in the water at the time.
The number of surfers visiting G-Land are way way below average this season so it could be the perfect time to slip over there.

The Doc’s Canggu Surf Report,
26th July 2010
Hey Jim, sorry not to get my report to you yesterday. Computer problems on
this end. Haven’t looked into Baliwaves today yet to see how you went
yesterday.
The weather conditions were bad and so the pics are pretty much that way
too.Use it if you want.

Monday 26th Early morning check was not so early, The sky is dark and
overcast so when I get down to the beach 6.20 am. swell looks OK but coming
out of the West rather than South-west. and looks about 3ft. In the gloom. I
look across to Kuta and can see nothing happening there, so I make the run
to Canggu.

The weather is unusual, a sort of temperature inversion, so driving though
Pererenan there is a mist/fog from humidity and smoke. Arriving to Canggu
7.30am there are about 10 on the left, 20 on the right and a crew on
sandbar. Water temperature is colder today. I can’t work out ifthis is the
ocean or the huge run-off from the rains in the mountains. Sets are over
head high, working best on the left but pretty erratic. A rain band moved
through clearing the air and a set lined up and marched through. Size
increasing in the morning during the time I was there.

Not the prettiest waves I have seen on Canggu today, but strong, up to
double head high. Try not to get caught inside near the big rock in these
closing out conditions. I did and for the first time ever was forced to beat
a retreat west, so now I can report on the conditions there. The beach is
steep and rocky. Waves breaking only meters from the shore. I wouldn’t have
liked to be there with a good board, it was hairy enough with my trusty BB.
About 200 meters west again is a softer looking break, I think called Pantai
Lima that had about 6 to 8 surfing. Local info is that that wave is never
crowded.

The local crew sat out the rain in Warung Ombak, preferring not to get
wet..

Wade Carmichael wins Billabong Pro Junior Asia in great waves at Keramas Bali

Wade Carmichael barrel rode his way to his biggest career victory by taking out a close and high scoring final at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Billabong Pro Junior Asia in excellent 1.5m (4 to 5 feet) surf at the famed Keramas River-mouth in Bali.

The 17 year-old Australian rising-star from Avoca Beach on NSW’s Central Coast displayed nerves of steel in his come-from-behind win today after James Woods (AUS/Coolangatta/Qld) opened the final with an outstanding 9 point ride.

“I was really concerned when Woods scored that 9 point ride early but I sort of told myself to relax and concentrate on getting a great wave because there were a lot of excellent waves coming through and I’d scored big prior to the final and realized I simply had to score a big one again” said Carmichael after the win.

“When that large set wave approached mid way through I knew the time had come to get the score – it lined up perfectly and I just rode the barrel hoping it would stay open and let me out, which it did and straight away I felt I’d taken the lead.”

Carmichael scored an excellent 8.75 for the ride and combined with his earlier ride of 7.75 took the lead and left Woods chasing a very achievable 7.5 to regain the lead which he was unable to find in the final 10 minutes.

For both surfers this was their first ever final and best ever result in ASP Pro Junior surfing with Carmichael taking $US7000 in prize-money and Woods $US3000.

“ I was disappointed not to win especially after that opening 9 point ride but I’m really pleased to have made the final of such an amazing event” said Woods.

“The waves have been great all week and today’s finals were super high standard – second is a great result and the $US3000 prize-money comes in handy as I’m looking to buy a car right now when I get home.”

In the semi-finals James Woods stole a last wave win over his younger brother Thomas Woods while Carmichael outclassed Blake Ainsworth by again riding deep barrels to advance.

This was the first-ever duel sanctioned ASP Australasia/Japan event which attracted the very best 20 year and under surfers from throughout the region which included a strong contingent of Australian, Japan, Indonesian, New Zealand and Philippine surfers along with a sprinkling of excellent surfers from South Africa, Brazil, Jamaica, Sudan and Hawaii.

Such was the success of the event that organizers held a well represented post-event meeting to discuss ways to expand this concept further into what is possibly surfing’s greatest geographical location boasting the greatest abundance of amazingly perfect reef, point and river-mouth locations.

Hi folks and thanks for stopping by the baliwaves again today for the latest news on surfing and weather conditions here on the No.1 surfing holiday destination of Bali.

This mornings surf recon on the Outer Reefs here in Tuban was showing a bit more of a decrease in wave height, now coming through in the chest to head high range between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. With the very occasional bigger set wave breaking on Middle Reef.

Looking for a wave this morning there is plenty of options. Canggu with the tide rising should have had some waves. The beach breaks from Kuta down through Legian will also only improve. Take your pick on the Outer Reefs between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. Balangan will be pretty much the same size as Middle Reef. Uluwatu for more size and power. The mid to late afternoon for the sunset session at your favorite low tide breaks.

Surfing conditions are as clean as they can get with the wind blowing straight off-shore, coming out of the ESE @ 4 – 8knot+. More than likely increasing in strength through out the day.

Tidal info for us today say’s we will have a 2.4mtr High that will peak around the 11.00am mark then running out for a reef exposing 0.1mtr Low @ 5.30pm.

Weather wise early this morning, after raining most of the night there were some nice patches of blue sky. But, right now @ 10.00am the clouds have come back in blanket formation and the rain has recommenced.

The annual Padang Padang Cup hosted by Rip Curl had their opening ceremony and heat draw with the competing local and international surfers on the 26th of July just gone by. The event has a 5 week waiting period to make sure “it will be on, when it’s on” So stay tuned and we’ll keep you up to date as the action gets ready and underway.

Hello there and thanks again for waiting around for the very latest news on surfing and weather conditions from here on your favorite surfing holiday destination of Bali. Just to bring ya’s up to scratch on why my reports and photos are a bit late getting loaded most days. When actually my day kicks off around 6.00am on average, 7 days a week. First I’ve got to get down the beach and assess the wave situation and then get to the best possible location and shoot photos until I’ve got the goods. Then get back home, deal with traffic, transfer photos, select, edit and then load them up. Bottom line is it just takes time, and hopefully it’s worth the wait.

Ok so this mornings surf check on the Outer Reefs was still showing wave height to be coming through in the head to almost double head high range between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. Plenty of surfers out on all three main section with Middle Reef picking up the bigger set waves. My crew wanted more size and more power so the choice was obvious to head for Uluwatu way down on the southern end of the island. From the moment we left home the rain started and is still raining now at 5.30pm. So that’s why the photos are a bit dull, I was shooting through the rain with a 1000mm lens.

We rocked into Uluwatu to see some set waves hitting the Main Peak in the solid double to triple head high range with only 20 surfers in the line up at 9.30am. Most of today’s photos are of the Main Peak. But as the tide turned and started pouring off the reef the Racetrack was delivering some deep deep tube rides. Wave height was backing off with the tide but still coming through in the head to almost double head high range by the time we packed up at 3.30pm. The number of surfers was also increasing with the decreasing of swell.

Surfing conditions were pretty good with light off-shore wind coming out of the ESE – SSE @ 6 – 10knot.

Tidal info for today had us down for a 2.4mtr High @ 10.00am and then running out for a 0.2mtr Low @ 5.00pm. Today also see’s a Full Moon a rising so we will see bigger ttidal ranges over the next 3 days.

Weather wise, what’s going on it’s been raining all day and we are dead smack in the middle our dry season ?

Ketut and I were lucky enough to be invited down to the opening ceremony for this years Rip Curl Padang Padang Cup. There was a big attendance for the opening and I did shoot some photos of the visiting international and local surfers that will be putting it all on the line for “The Cup”. The contest has a 5 week waiting period to make sure it runs in perfect Padang Padang conditions and “it will be on, when it’s on” I’ll try and get the photos loaded onto the site later tonight.

Top seeds eliminated on Day 5 at the Billabong Pro Junior Asia

Tube rides were in abundance today although many excellent wave scores included a huge variety of moves with Keramas again delivering the type of high performance platform it is famous for.

The top five seeded surfers at this event have all been eliminated pre semi finals with number one seed Mitch Crews (AUS/Gold Coast) bundled out in his round of 16 heat in a high scoring see-sawing heat against Ty Watson.

Three of the youngest competitors competing here in Wade Carmichael (16 years/AUS/NSW), Thomas Woods (17 years/AUS/Gold Coast) and Beyrick DeVries (17 years/Sth Africa/Durban) were probably the days standouts.

Carmichael surfed a superb quarter final to defeat highly credentialed Garrett Parkes, setting up the win early with an excellent long 9.5 barrel ride.

Parkes resorted to some creative and explosive aerials to fight back and challenge for the win but fell just short.

“Excellent waves out there and I figured getting great barrel’s was the best strategy but it’s tough surfing against Parkes as he’s capable of pulling out huge moves” said Carmichael.

Thomas Woods trailed for most his heat against Sam Lendrum but was able to steal the win in the final minute with an 8.75 ride which included a strong final aerial move while De Vries put in another super polished performance to defeat Sam Wrench.

Ryan Callinan again showed he’ll be extremely hard to beat here if conditions are barrelling tomorrow. Despite riding backhand, Callinan demonstrated impeccable tube sense easily winning his heat against Brent Savage.

Early morning conditions have been great most days and everyone is expecting an epic conclusion to this high quality event tomorrow with competitors re-convening at 6am!

32 Invitees Draw Their Heats at Rip Curl Cup Opening Ceremony

Thirty two of surfing’s elite gathered at Padang Padang beach on the island of Bali Sunday for the opening ceremony of the 2010 Rip Curl Cup. They came from as far away as England, Japan, Hawaii and New Zealand to draw their heats and find out who they will surf against in the opening round of competition.

Hundreds of spectators packed the beach to watch the presentation and the following press conference with the 32 surfers – 16 of Indonesia’s best and 16 of the world’s top tube riders. Contest organizers devised the heat drawing so that each four-man heat features two Indonesian surfers and two international surfers. Rip Curl also left one final spot open in the contest for a “Mystery Surfer,” to be announced later in the waiting period.

After the draw was complete, current Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour ratings leader Pepen Hendrik found himself in Heat 5 with the mystery surfer.

“It could be someone really heavy,” Hendrik said. “If they are leaving one spot in the contest open, it’s probably for a really good surfer. I’ll just have to wait and see.”

One thing was clear after the contest bracket had been filled out with the names of this year’s invited surfers: There will be no easy road to the finals. Two-time invitee Koa Smith (Hawaii) will surf in Heat 6 against Padang kingpin Rizal Tanjung, Bali standout Marlon Gerber and Australian charger Anthony Walsh.

“There are no easy heats in this contest,” said Smith. “The waves are usually so good, it comes down to making it out of the barrel. You’re either gonna get a 10 or a two. It’s anybody’s game.”

Small waves were breaking over the inside section of reef at Padang Sunday evening, but no contest-worthy swell is on the horizon this week. For now, the draw has been set and it’s on when it’s on…

Australia’s Ryan Callinan scores a perfect 10 point ride to win through to final 16 at the Billabong Pro Junior Asia

Excellent early conditions at Keramas River-mouth for day 4 of the ASP Billabong Pro Junior Asia as all eight round four heats were completed before strong onshore winds hit mid-morning and it was called a day.

With sets to 2m (6 feet), surfers regularly charged some of the bigger barrelling waves and high scores were a-plenty.

Australia’s Ryan Callinan was the stand-out scoring the events first perfect 10 point ride on a start-to-finish heaving large barrel ride and he backed up that score with a second required outstanding ride of 9 points for another long barrel on a wave that was marginally smaller. His 19 point heat tally easily the biggest of the event so far.

“I was lucky to get through yesterday in the smaller conditions but when I saw the solid swell and barrels this morning I felt really confident – that was a dream heat for me and it feels great when you hear 10 points for your ride!”

It’s the second perfect ten point ride awarded to Callinan in the past week – he scored a similar long barrelling perfect ride in much colder waters in South Australia just last week and the 19-year –old Newcastle surfer is accelerating up the ASP Australasian Junior Series ratings and is now well in reach of making the top four on the seasons ratings which is the qualification cut-off for the ASP World Junior Championship Series.

Today’s heat win was like a double win for Callinan as he eliminated his biggest rival to take that fourth position on the ratings, Sunshine Coasts Chris Friend!

“I’m trying not to think about the ratings but I am aware that Friend and Chris Salisbury were both eliminated today so I guess there’s opportunity to get a great result here” added Callinan.

With the event now down to just 16 surfers, the Billabong Pro Junior Asia lost a significant degree of its’ international flavour today with just South Africa’s Beyrick DeVries left to take on 15 Australian’s on the final day!

Regardless of the final 16 being loaded with Australian’s, the Japanese, Indonesian and other internationals in the field were prominent and extremely competitive throughout and the experience of competing against Australia’s best in such perfect waves goes a long way to enhancing their development.

Many of Japan’s best Pro Junior surfer competing here were exceptionally young and similar to Hawaii’s Koa Smith who at just 15 years-of-age was super impressive throughout rounds one to four.

The final 16 will meet again tomorrow morning in the hope of early morning clean winds for what might be the final day.
