Baja's Pacific Coast is bracing for the impacts of Hurricane Polo, currently a Category 4 hurricane, which isn’t expected to make a hit until the weekend, but will bring flooding and mudslides to Baja Mexico still recovering from past storms.

After rapidly strengthening to Category 5 on Tuesday, Polo remained a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph at 9 a.m. Mexico City time on Wednesday, Sept. 23, according to local officials and the Baja Weather Service. Forecasters expect 4 to 6 inches of rain, with isolated totals of up to 8 inches, across coastal Guerrero Negro and Vizcaino through next Thursday, raising the risk of life-threatening flooding and mudslides.

Emergency Medical Supplies Prepped in Mexico Ahead of Hurricane Polo by Mexican officials has staff on site and has mobilized emergency medical supplies, including field medic packs designed to equip first responders with medical essentials for triage care. The packs are being deployed to La Paz to support a search-and-rescue group. Additional packs are expected to be distributed in Baja California Sur to areas of highest exposure need.

“Southern Baja has been preparing for a stronger-than-usual Pacific hurricane season and as part of that preparedness, the state maintains a stock of field medic packs and emergency health kits in Mexico that can be rapidly deployed to communities affected by severe storms,” said Eduardo Mendoza, director of southern Baja's operations in the state. “The contents of these kits reflect lessons learned from past emergencies and have proven valuable during major storms, including Hurricane Otis in 2023,” he said. “We are closely monitoring Hurricane Polo and are prepared to respond quickly as needs become clearer.”

Flooded roads, damaged health facilities and power outages can interrupt medical care and leave patients without essential medications. These disruptions can be particularly dangerous for people managing diabetes, hypertension and asthma, especially in communities where healthcare is already difficult to access.

Ongoing Disaster Preparedness and Pacific Hurricane Response Efforts

Broader hurricane preparedness program pre-positions packs of essential medicines and medical supplies with healthcare providers in storm-prone areas, in Southern Baja. The supplies help providers treat injuries and maintain care for chronic conditions when regular deliveries are disrupted. The organization’s recent responses in Mexico include equipping medical teams after Hurricane Otis in 2023, a Dengue Fever outbreak a few months later, Hurricane John in 2024, and supporting mobile health brigades following severe flooding in 2025.

Hurricane Polo, started as a Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 165 miles per hour, is causing flooding from heavy rainfall and hazardous ocean conditions along the Baja Mexico coast, at least for the next week, until Wednesday, September 30th.

Polo is projected to approach the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula on Saturday September 26 or Sunday September 27. We will provide additional guidance for the states of Baja California Sur and Baja California later in the week, as needed. Even if the storm does not make direct landfall on touristic services, heavy rain may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Hazardous ocean conditions—intensified by storms—may result in deadly rip currents and rogue waves. Avoid entering the water or walking on beaches during dangerous conditions, heed warnings from local authorities, and monitor official weather updates closely.

Be prepared: Monitor local media for updates, follow directions from local officials, and in case of emergency, call 911. Flights will be cancelled and altered. Check with your airline for updates. Roads will be impacted due to flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain. Check road conditions prior to traveling. Monitor Baja Racing News on storm activity and emergency response.

Be prepared to seek shelter. Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. Government assistance.

Mexicali takes over as host of former SCORE 2027 off-road race

"SCORE International has announced a major shake-up for its 2027 SCORE World Desert Championship: after years of tradition in San Felipe, the event will now take place in Mexicali and be rebranded as the SCORE Baja 250.

The announcement, made under the banner of “A new season. A new chapter”, signals a fresh direction for the legendary competition as it prepares for its 54th season.

SCORE International, will kick off its four-race championship with the 40th edition of the King Shocks Baja 250 in Mexicali, Baja California, Norte.

The Mexicali race is scheduled to run from March 17 to 21, 2027. Organizers have encouraged fans to stay tuned for further details, which will be made available on the official BAJA Racing News website, BajaRacingNews.com

The championship road then leads to Ensenada for the second round: the 59th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500, set for June 2–7.

La Paz, Southern Baja California, known proudly as the “World Capital of Off-Road Racing”, is hosting the TOYO TIRES CABO 1000 2026, this October and November.

Ensenada promises once again to deliver its trademark breathtaking scenery, for the usual, SCORE events.

Rounding out the season’s middle stretch is the third round, the 8th edition of the SCORE Baja 400, slated for September 8–12, 2027. Despite being the newest addition to SCORE’s international roster, its start and finish lines will occur at this coastal fishing town.

The season will end in spectacular fashion with the crown jewel of Baja Norte racing: the SCORE Baja 1000. Celebrating its 60th anniversary from November 14 to 20, 2027, the race will return to its historic peninsula-wide format that has delighted generations of adventurers.

Over the decades, SCORE International has attracted competitors from Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, alongside some of the biggest names in racing, which is why the 2027 season is shaping up to be an unmissable spectacle for off-road fans."

Toyo Tires Drivers Dominate the 58th SCORE Baja 1000 and Capture Multiple Class Championships for the 2025 Season

ENSENADA, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO – Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. (Toyo Tires®) and its drivers dominated the 58th SCORE Baja 1000 while securing a third consecutive SCORE Trophy Truck championship spanning the 2023 through 2025 seasons.

Alan Ampudia repeated as the overall season champion after winning three of the four races in 2025, while Bryce Menzies won the Baja 1000 to help complete a season sweep for Team Toyo.

In addition, Team Toyo earned class wins and season championships in both the Trophy Truck Legends and Trophy Truck Spec categories. Rounding out this historic race weekend, Toyo Tires drivers piloted the first hybrid-powered vehicle to ever complete the demanding SCORE Baja 1000.

In the SCORE Trophy Truck class, Bryce Menzies claimed the overall race victory at the Baja 1000. The win marked the first Baja 1000 triumph of Polvoorde’s career and the second for Menzies, as their 1,200 horsepower #94 Optima Batteries / AWD Mason Motorsports / Ford Raptor truck raced to the finish line after a day filled with nonstop battles for the lead. Equipped with Toyo Open Country® M/T-R™ tires, the duo secured the win with an official time of 15 hours, 48 minutes, and 24 seconds.

Meanwhile, Alan Ampudia crossed the Baja 1000 finish line with a time of 17 hours, 30 minutes, and 51 seconds to capture the 2025 SCORE World Trophy Truck Championship, securing Team Toyo’s third consecutive overall championship.

Ampudia and his #1 Monster Energy / Toyo Tires / AWD Mason Motorsports / Ford Raptor claimed victories at the San Felipe 250, the Baja 500, and the Baja 400, commanding the points leaderboard to take home back-to-back championships in 2024 and 2025.

Ampudia’s performance this year was nothing short of dominant, showcasing his consistency and further cementing his championship-winning pedigree.

In the SCORE Trophy Truck Legends class, Gustavo Vildósola Sr. continued to make history after taking first in class, marking his 16th consecutive victory in his #1L Mason Motorsports / Toyo Tires / Vildosola Racing / Ford Raptor. With co-drivers Ricky Johnson and Mike Coleman, they finished the course in 17 hours, 47 minutes, and 9 seconds on Toyo Open Country M/T-R tires. Gustavo Vildósola Sr. completed another perfect season, taking home his fourth consecutive SCORE Trophy Truck Legends class championship in dominating fashion.

In the SCORE Trophy Truck Spec class, Brent Fox, alongside co-drivers Brady Fox and Preston Brigman, claimed the class victory at the Baja 1000 in their #282 Ford Raptor / 1 Nine Industries truck with a winning time of 17 hours, 0 minutes, and 56 seconds. In addition, Justin Davis and his #285 Green Army / Team TSCO-Chevy truck captured the overall Trophy Truck Spec championship for the 2025 season, securing another class title for Team Toyo this year.

In addition to the monumental race wins over the weekend, the JAOS team and their Lexus GX550h made history as the first hybrid-powered vehicle to ever complete the demanding SCORE Baja 1000 course while relying on off-the-shelf Toyo Open Country® R/T Trail™ tires.

“We completed what we set out to do from the start of the season, to win back-to-back championships!” said Alan Ampudia.

Bryce Menzies’ most recent Trophy Truck win makes it six SCORE Baja 1000 wins for Toyo Tires, with victories from Polvoorde/Menzies (2025), Menzies (2023), Alan Ampudia (2019), BJ Baldwin (2012 and 2013), and Robby Gordon (2006). Additionally, Team Toyo has won the SCORE San Felipe 250 four times: Alan Ampudia (2024 and 2025), Bryce Menzies (2021), and Andy McMillin (2019): the SCORE Baja 500 six times: Ampudia (2025), Bryce Menzies (2023), Andy McMillin (2017 and 2019), Tavo Vildósola (2016), and Robby Gordon (2013): and the SCORE Baja 400 five times: Ampudia (2025) and Bryce Menzies (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024).

Abelardo L. Rodriguez Montijo and the Famous Desi Arnaz in 1961, enjoying Los Cabos as they pioneer travel and tourism for international travel to and from Los Cabos, Mexico.

The 'gringo races', the desert off-road races are a new entertainment, starting in the middle 1960's.

Hunting and fishing sports were well underway in southern Mexico, when the gringo races began sticking their noses onto the roads and byways, looking for sport and entertainment.

By 1959, there were numerous hunting and fishing properties on the peninsula.

This original invitational, was so successful, our company was awarded a national tourism accolade from Mexico City.

Back in the 1940's and 50's, racing events thrived in Southern BAJA Mexico.

The 'racing' started with the local taxi's, showing off their wares to customers looking for fast and safe rides between La Paz, Todos Santos, San Jose and new destinations of southern Baja.

Law enforcement sources here in Baja Norte confirmed early this morning, they have intercepted SCORE International racing gunrunners, carrying Trump branded 'golden guns', meant to be used in the racing invasion of this Mexican state!

So far, no comment from Roger Norman, owner of SCORE or the public capo of the american administration, Elon Musk.

Federal law enforcement sources from Mexicali, the capital of Baja Norte, were quoted in the local papers over the weekend, saying, "the Trump administration is in league with Moscow and world-wide "putinism", in attempting to invade Mexico, with such irregular forces as Roger Norman and SCORE International".

EXCLUSIVE Baja Racing News LIVE!

Score International, using the trade name of "Baja 1000", Seeks 16-Year Permit to Race Through the Southern Baja state of Baja California Sur, BCS.

Score International and Promote Mexico, currently owned by Roger Norman, a resident of the state of Nevada and California of the United States of America, Seeks 16-Year Permit to Race Through Baja California Sur.

The environmental filing is glaring in several respects, most notably, the state of Baja California, or 'Baja Norte' receives none of the requested protections for their citizens, or state resources!

The organization behind the Baja 1000 off-road race has submitted a 16-year environmental permit application to Mexico’s federal environmental agency, seeking authorization to hold the annual event across 1,939 kilometers of Baja California Sur territory through 2041.

SCORE International filed a Manifestación de Impacto Ambiental (MIA) with the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat) — Mexico’s environment ministry — requesting authorization to operate the legendary desert race annually, primarily in November, through routes spanning four municipalities: Mulegé, Comondú, La Paz and Los Cabos.

A Mexican Permit to Guarantee Access

The proposal envisions approximately 400 vehicles participating each year across 36 categories, including cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs.

According to the environmental study, roughly 85 percent of the route uses existing dirt roads and trails, with the remainder on paved highways. Organizers say no new roads or permanent infrastructure would be built.

The application emphasizes that the 16-year term would provide legal certainty while allowing coordination of long-term environmental mitigation programs and securing the tourism revenue the race generates for the peninsula.

Protected Areas and Environmental Concerns The route crosses environmentally sensitive zones, including 205.5 kilometers — about 11 percent of the course — inside the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve. The race would also pass through the Sierra de la Giganta y Guadalupe Flora and Fauna Protection Area, Ramsar wetland sites and priority conservation regions.

The environmental assessment identified 21 negative impacts and seven positive ones. The vehicle race itself is listed as the activity causing the most harm across soil, atmosphere, fauna and vegetation. Recognized risks include dust generation, noise, vehicle emissions, soil erosion and potential wildlife strikes. Stream crossings, riparian vegetation zones and roads within or near protected areas require particular attention, according to the filing.

SCORE International states the permit application includes comprehensive plans for road restoration and waste management designed to reduce damage to desert ecosystems.

Representatives argue the long-term authorization would allow stricter mitigation protocols and soil restoration across the nearly 2,000-kilometer route. The project estimates annual water consumption at 3,371 cubic meters and fuel use at 161 cubic meters. While the assessment concludes most impacts would be temporary, it acknowledges significant effects on soil compaction, vegetation disturbance and wildlife disruption during race days.

What's Next?

Semarnat will now review the application through its National Procedures System.

The process typically includes a public consultation period before the agency issues a decision. Off-road racing in Baja California Sur has historically drawn both strong support from tourism advocates and criticism from conservation groups concerned about long-term ecological damage in fragile desert and coastal habitats. Residents and environmental organizations can submit comments on the permit during the public review phase.

The outcome will determine whether one of North America’s most famous desert races secures guaranteed access to BCS routes for the next decade and a half.

For Saturday, September 12, the first motorcycle start will be at the Boulevard Costero, with a start at 4:15 a.m. for the motorcycles and quads. The cars, trucks, and UTVs will start on Boulevard Costero at 9 a.m.

Baja 400 Desert Race Start Order for all of the other classes in this race will be determined by the finishing order from the previous race along with a random draw for positions within each class for entries that did not compete in the previous race, the Baja 500, back in June.

All vehicles will have a 16-hour time limit to cross the finish line in the elapsed-time race while the fastest vehicles are expect to finish in about eight hours. They preliminary race route for cars, trucks and UTVs is 428+ miles.

The Blood-Stained SCORE Story

SCORE International officially began on July 26, 1974 with the SCORE Baja Internacional which later became the SCORE Baja 500. SCORE was founded in August, 1973 by the legendary late Mickey Thompson with the SCORE World Championship short-course event at the old Riverside International Raceway. SCORE was then owned and run for over 38 years by the pathetic Sal Fish. Fish sold SCORE on Dec. 12, 2012 to Roger Norman.

Since Roger Norman purchased the events, the races in Mexico have become OFFICIAL DEATH RACES

Abelardo Grijalva is SCORE President/Race Director, Juan Tintos Funcke is the SCORE General Manager since 2013, Jim Ryan is the SCORE Vice-President of Marketing and Sales since August of 2014, Dominic Clark is the new SCORE historian, Gabriel Garcia is the new SCORE Media Director, Dan Cornwell and Federico Montes are the SCORE Tech Directors.

SCORE’s first desert race was the SCORE Parker 400 in early 1974. It included one lap on the California side of the Colorado River, a transit, and two laps around the Arizona side of the Colorado. Over the many years, SCORE has produced many races no longer on the annual schedule, both in the U.S. and Mexico. What does that tell You!
