To many companies and even individuals, offices have become a thing of the past. Thanks to technological development, colleagues can communicate through instant chats while bosses can delegate duties via Skype among other methods. As the requirement to have a physical space to operate from becomes less important, people are shifting their attention to work from the comfort of their homes. This has seen the rise of home offices which have literally taken the place of formal offices. In this respect, a home office has become the best of both worlds. But how do you create a home office, especially if you are working on a tight budget?

One of the best ways of creating an outstanding home office on a budget is by being creative with space. This is true considering the fact that renovating an entire room may be costly in he long run. Instead of contacting home builders to convert the entire space, you should use a screen purposely to set up one corner of the room for work purposes. On same note, you many also consider setting up your home office in an isolated and sparsely used spot such as the basement or attic.

Just like any other formal office, a home office requires shelves to keep your files and other valuables safe. However, you can save some money by opting to make your own shelves instead or ordering from an expansive store or calling home builders to do the same. By building your own, you are also able to achieve the desired size you want, considering that shop bought shelves are only available in standard sizes and shapes. However, be sure to choose soft wood which can be cut and worked on easily.

Lighting is an important component when designing a home office. In this respect, you should place your computers and other machines to take advantage of the natural light. If your room has only one window or none at all, then simply use adjustable desk lamps or overhead lighting to add atmosphere to your office area. You can purchase second hand lamps and lighting, provided that they have been tested for safety.

Storage is another important aspect when it comes to designing a home office. And when it comes to organizing and storing files and papers, you need to be a little creative. If yours is a very small office, then you need to come up with ways of storing papers and files without taking up a lot of valuable space. Design shelves and take advantage of vertical space for storing items that you do not need access to on a daily basis. This is also where you need to consider corner storage for storing papers. If you have run out of ideas with respect to designing your storage facilities, home builders may put your fears to rest.

As for furniture, one of the most important pieces is, of course, a chair and a desk. To avoid spending a lot on these important pieces of furniture, you should consider shopping online like on eBay or on shops that sell second-hand furniture. However, be sure to choose good quality furniture that will stand the test of time. Although a fancy looking desk may look tempting, an ordinary furniture of outstanding quality will save you both time and money.

The other outstanding way of creating a home office on a budget is to reduce the emphasis on accessories such as pencil holders, letter trays, file boxes and storage bins among other items. Instead, you should consider investing in simple accessories that will look pleasing to the eye.

No matter what your field of expertise is, you can provide tutoring to interested third parties. Bakers, artists, accountants, lawyers, real estate agents, musicians and other professionals have all found that it is not hard to offer one-on-one classes or tutor small groups. Following are several reasons why part time career tutoring can be a very good idea.

Extra Income

Tutoring can be a very good way to earn extra money. There are many people who want to learn a specific skill without having to get formal training at an accredited educational institution. There are also college and university students who want to get more personalized training in order to better understand a specific subject.

One on one tutoring can pay very well. Depending on the nature of one's skill, he or she may be able to charge anywhere from $10 to $30 an hour per class. Those who travel to a student's home will be able to charge more than those who require students to come to his or her home or office. Tutoring can also be done via the Internet, making it easy for those who have a busy schedule to offer tutoring on the side.

Considering the fact that a person does not have to invest a lot of money in tutoring, the financial rewards are quite high. Even if materials are used for a particular class, as would be the case if one is offering art or baking classes, the students themselves would be responsible to pay for materials used.

Expanding One's Network

Tutoring enables a person to expand his or her network of friends and business partners. A newbie starting out in a particular career may not have much to offer at present; however, he or she may become a valuable business partner in five or ten years' time. Students can and often do refer a good tutor to other potential students.

There are also non-monetary benefits to being a tutor. Tutoring enables one to develop close friendships with students who will be forever grateful for the tutor's time and personalized attention. Tutoring is a great way to meet new people and make new friends.

Learning Something New

While a tutor naturally has more training and experience than the person he or she is tutoring, it has been wisely said that everyone has something to offer. Tutors can learn a lot from their students, as students often have a different perspective and even new ideas that a tutor may not have thought of before.

A tutor should take the time to get to know his or her students, see how they operate and, most importantly, not put students in a box. Some things must be done in a certain way and there is no room for variation; however, in most fields of expertise, innovation and new ideas are key to career success. A tutor should encourage students to find even better and faster ways of doing things. The lessons are meant to serve as a springboard and should not prevent the students from trying out new ideas when warranted.

These are just some of the many good reasons why tutoring is a good idea. Lots of people are interested in personalized career training, so it should not be hard to find students in any given city or town. As a person gains students, these students will tell others about the tutor and thus help him or her gain even more students. A person who is interested in earning a bit of extra income this way should consider what he or she has to offer, make a class plan and then actively look for individuals who would be able to benefit from one's experience and expertise.

Author Bio

Joshua Turner is a writer who creates informative articles in relation to business. In this article, he explains a few benefits to tutoring and aims to encourage further study with an online masters in education degree.

For example, the median pay for biochemists and biophysicists is about $79,390, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). In addition, the BLS projects that job opportunities in the aforementioned fields will grow by 31% through the year 2020. People working in manufacturing or in real estate can only dream of such impressive numbers. Read on to learn more about some great science careers.

Food Science Technician

In general, work, a food science technician ensures that food products meet standards set by agencies that monitor food safety and additionally monitors food texture, nutrients, color, quality, taste, as well as chemical properties. Professionals in this field use scientific processes to test food and beverage products. Majority of experts in food science work in laboratories using sophisticated equipment to measure, weigh, test food additives, preservatives, and examine biological samples. After this, they record the results and prepare reports, charts, and graphs detailing their findings. To excel in this field of work, you should be able to think critically, pay attention to details, and be a good communicator.

Physicist

Physicists are people who try to understand the nature of the universe and the matter contained in it. They achieve this goal by studying and observing natural phenomena followed by development of mathematical theories/models to explain what they see. This includes laws governing energy, motion, and matter. You will regularly perform complex calculations to evaluate and analyze data. Other tasks include using computer simulations to model physical phenomena, collaborating with other physicists to develop theories, and publishing research results in Journals and other science magazines.

In most cases, the nature of work carried out by a physicist takes place inside the research and development (R&D) departments of learning institutions, government agencies such as NASA, or aircraft manufacturers. Some of the subfields within this field of work include acoustics, nuclear physics, optics, plasma physics, atomic and molecular physics, and particle physics.

Medical Laboratory Technician

The work of a medical laboratory technologist is to collect samples and perform tests to determine the composition of body tissues and fluids. This is in addition to recording the test results, discussing results with doctors and other medical experts, as well as operating sophisticated laboratory equipment. One can specialize any of the following subfields:

- Phlebotomy: This specialty generally involves the collection of blood samples.

- Cytotechnology generally involves preparing body cell specimens and samples for examination using a microscope to determine the cause of abnormal growths such as tumors.

- Molecular biology: The bulk of the work in this specialty involves carrying out protein and nucleic acid tests.

- Immunohematology: This profession basically deals with the collection, classification, and preparation of blood for transfusion.

- Immunology: Professionals in this niche examine the human immune system to determine the effect of foreign bodies.

Geoscientist

Unlike other scientists who spend their time cooped inside laboratories, geoscientists spend most of their time outdoors studying the physical composition and structure of the earth. They also work closely with other scientists to prospect for natural resources such as water, oil, gold, silver, and gas. They also use principles of physics and mathematics to determine how the earth's gravitational forces work as well as rotation. Geoscientist's can specialize in subfields such as seismology, geophysics, magnetic geophysics, and geodesy.

Working as a scientist does not necessarily have to be dull and boring. This is partly because your skill set would enable you to work in myriad industries including manufacturers, the military, oil and gas companies, healthcare providers, government agencies, or start your own business and work as a consultant. To thrive as a scientist, you must have an inquisitive mind, strong math and analytical skills, observant, and detail-oriented. The ability to imagine and visualize abstract concepts such as dark matter, black holes, and parallel universes is generally a big plus.

Author Bio

William Stevens is a writer who creates informative articles in relation to technology. In this article, he explains a few careers as a scientist and aims to encourage further study through clinical laboratory science programs.

You do not necessarily need a professional career coach to show you how to develop and grow your career. This is because with an appropriate career development strategy, you can be your own career coach. In fact, if you know what you want from your life and know your preferred career path, then you are better equipped to manage your career development more effectively than any career instructor would be able to do for you. With that in mind, here are some steps you can take to improve your own career status.

Develop a Realistic Timeline for Your Career Goals and Expected Career Milestones

It is important to take this key step if you want to manage your career and ensure that your career status improves steadily. Here are some vital guidelines that you can use to set good career goals:

- Whenever you set a goal, always identify the reason(s) for setting that particular goal. This is because having strong reasons behind your goals will keep you motivated to fulfill your goals.

- Your goals should be as specific as possible. Therefore, ensure you outline exactly when and how you intend to fulfill each goal.

- Ensure you set both short and long-term goals in order to make your career goals more manageable.

- Review your goals continuously to ensure you remain on track.

Establish Your Career Advancement Options As Soon As Possible

Besides setting manageable career goals, you also need to gain more knowledge on the career advancement options available for you particularly in terms of your expertise and level of experience. Once you identify all your options, you should make a list of the career options you would be willing to pursue and make a strategic plan detailing the measures you can take to ensure that you gravitate towards one or several of these options.

Consult Your Employer/Human Resource Department

Before you begin searching for a better job position outside your current workplace, ensure you explore all your internal career development opportunities. Most business managers create incentives to encourage employers to explore career advancement opportunities within the workplace instead of seeking alternative employment. As such, if you establish that there are some viable opportunities worth exploring at your current place of work, it may be more rewarding, in the long run, to pursue such opportunities instead of focusing on getting a better job elsewhere.

Focus on Self Motivation

Self-improvement and motivation is a vital key to feeling content in your job and being able to pursue career improvement on your own. The following are some effective measures you can take to ensure that you remain motivated to improve your career status:

- Identify the unique factors and reasons that motivate you to develop your career and focus on them. For instance if you crave the financial stability that you will attain once you develop your career to a certain level, focus on this factor in order to remain motivated.

- Set good career goals: It is nearly impossible to find motivation within yourself if you are not sure what you are working to achieve. In addition, break down your goals into small goals that you attain within a short amount of time because doing so is likely to help you remain enthusiastic about your goals.

- Evaluate your progress on accomplishing your goals regularly to avoid getting sidetracked and ultimately demotivated.

Conclusion

Whether you are a business owner or an employee, you need to formulate a clear strategy for career growth and development in order to improve your level of success continuously. Once you have such a strategy in place, ensure you engage in continuous skill building and self-improvement in order to improve your suitability for the job positions you hope to fill in future.

In order to be successful in business you must have goals; if you don't then it is just a matter of time before everything goes to hell. Goals are what keep you focused on a day-to-day basis; they inspire you to get up early in the morning to go to your place of business and remain there till late in the night. One of the most common goals among business people is that of expanding and becoming more relevant in their respective industries.

Expansion usually starts at the local level. This means that if you have a few stores in one area you can proceed to add several more in different locations around your country of residence; it may take quite a number of years to cover all the key areas fully. For some people, this is usually enough, but it is important to understand that you can always go a step further; i.e. beyond borders and into the international market. However, this can be quite challenging because there are so many things to consider. If you are currently operating in the US or UK; here are a few tips on how you can successfully build and expand your business internationally.

Start Small

Getting into a new market is usually a new experience for most businesses and, therefore, it is important to take it slow. Take time to try and figure out what will work in the new market as opposed to simply duplicating your domestic business model. In addition, don't set a whole bunch of goals because you might end being very disappointed, instead; kick-start operations with just a single or at most two business goals and more importantly, focus on a tiny portion of the new market. This will make it easy for you to manage operations and monitor performance.

Understand the Market

This is probably the most important undertaking with regard to expanding your business internationally. As mentioned, you are getting into a new market and, therefore, trends are likely to be very different from what you are used to. If you want to be successful, you must carry out in-depth research. Find out what customers want; how they are likely to respond to your business when you set up shop and most importantly ask yourself, is there really a need for the product or service that your business is offering? Going into a new country without first familiarizing yourself with the situation on the ground could end up being very costly both financially and in terms of time.

Understand the Culture

You also have to familiarize yourself with the local culture. What you find funny or captivating in the US or UK might be viewed as offensive or annoying by the local people. If the country you are expanding to speaks a different language, take time to learn it. You don't necessarily have to become an expert, just make sure you understand the basics like greetings, numbers and the like. Also make sure that you are fully aware of what are considered acceptable business practices and what are not. This will save you a great deal of trouble with locals.

Understand the Law

It is also very vital that you familiarize yourself with the laws of the land. You can't just set up shop in a new a country without understanding how business operations are regulated. Laws and regulations are not the same in all countries and, therefore, making assumptions about various aspects could be very dangerous -- probably even land you in jail. There are quite a number of laws that you need to look seriously into, for example, those related to taxation, labor practices and banking. Have all these at your fingertips and if necessary, enlist the services of a local lawyer to elaborate any items that you might not understand.

Many bored employees may dream of starting a business or otherwise finding some other means of employment. If you absolutely dread the thought of getting out of bed and going to the same job for one more day, you should consider other options that may be available to you. In some cases, you may simply need a career change to a more exciting line of work that you may not have considered such as

- at home business entrepreneur
- fire investigator
- pet groomer
- ski instructor

At Home Business Entrepreneur

One of the easiest options in changing careers is to start your own business. This option has the advantage of allowing you to choose an area you love. For instance, if you already have a hobby or interest you want to pursue, you may be keener to enjoy your job. Furthermore, the Internet has made it easier than ever to start a business at home.

Risk/Excitement Factor: Of course, a risk of this venture is that you have to build and expand a base, which may be much more difficult than it appears. However, the challenge of building this base can be part of the excitement. Working at home whether on an Internet venture or with some other career may be just the thing you need when you are looking for an exciting challenge.

Fire Investigator

There are also careers for those who like to combine various skills into one job. For instance, a fire investigator may play many roles including detective, enforcer of the law, engineer and scientist. When you investigate fires, you not only have to find the cause of the fire, but you may also have to go the extra mile when causes such as arson are found. This is the kind of career you need if you love a little mystery.

Risk/Excitement Factor: You should never go into this type of job thinking it will be like popular investigation shows on television. There may not be the breakthrough moments and investigations can grow cold, taking months or even years. With this in mind, you need to consider how much patience you have when dealing with mysteries. However, you can get a huge sense of satisfaction when you do solve cases and help those you serve.

Pet Groomer

Animal lovers may enjoy working with pets in this capacity. Many people like to treat their pets but more like to make sure that their pets are getting the care they need. This means you not only need to know skills such as trimming animal fur, but you also need to understand pet nutrition and care.

Risk/Excitement Factor: Animals may not always be the most well trained, so you may end up caught up in unexpected drama. On the other hand, if chasing around dogs or coming across exotic pets every once in a while appeals to you, you may never get bored.

Ski Instructor

Many people like to take to the slopes every once in a while. If you enjoy being on the outside and enjoy the satisfaction of teaching new skill, a position such as ski instructor just may suite you. You may also enjoy a mix of meeting new people and running into ski regulars.

Risk/Excitement Factor: Of course, you will need to be an expert skier for this position. Even so, skiing is very dangerous and runs the risk of serious injury if you are ever in an accident. However, this is actually part of the appeal for many who like to ski. Also, having the opportunity to take to the slopes on your time off can be fun as well.

Being laid off is every employees nightmare. It means that there will no longer be a constant source of income. One can be laid off for any reason or, in some cases, for no reason at all. Well, regardless of the reason, it is important that the law be observed and employees' rights be respected. There are several legal constraints that ensure that the employee is not mistreated when being laid off. The laws differ from one place to another. Here is a comparison of UK and US laws on being laid off.

Notice

In the US, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires all businesses that have more than 100 employees to issue workers 60 days of advance notice, before closing a plant or a mass layoff. During this notice period, the employees must receive their normal pay and benefits, regardless of whether they are working or not. These perks are terminated if the employee starts working in another company, since that is considered as a resignation under the Act.
The same applies to the UK. Employers are not allowed to lay off employees without notice. The employee is entitled to a minimum period of notice, which is stated in the employment agreement and employees written statement. The notice should be written down and the date of termination specified. Employees are entitled to full pay during the notice period.

Insurance

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act states that employers provide laid-off personnel with the same insurance benefits they had while working. Such benefits include dental, vision and health coverage. They should continue up to 18 months after layoff. For this Act to be effective, the employee must pay the monthly insurance premium in full. A 2% administrative fee is also charged.

Unemployment insurance

In the US the Federal Unemployment Tax Act requires all employers pay an unemployment tax to fund the unemployment insurance of their state and job placement programs. The nature of the unemployment insurance is determined by the state in which the person worked.

If one is laid off in the UK, he or he may be entitled to jobseeker's allowance or jobseeker's benefit. This provides on with some money while looking for another job. On the other hand, family income supplement is reduced to the reduction in working hours.

Severance benefits

Employers are not required to offer severance packages to laid-off workers. However, they are bound to do so if they are the individual employment contract or union contract states so. In some cases, though, the employer can decide to give the employee a severance package out of good will. If a severance package is provided, the Federal Older Worker's Benefit Protection Act protects employees aged over 40. This law prevents employers from laying off workers based on their age and ensures that the same benefits and severance plan is given to all workers, regardless of age.

Just like in the US, UK employers are not required by law to give severance pay, unless if stated otherwise in a legal document, such as an employment or union contract. However, if an employer wants to lay off a person without issuing a notice, he or she has to give some compensation, which includes all the basic pay that is left on the contract, plus any other extras e.g. health insurance and pensions.

There are some similarities in UK and US law as regards to being laid off. They all advocate for fair treatment of employees and ensure that proper compensation is offered to the laid-off workers. However, as much as the law protects the workers, it is also important for each of them to carefully check his or her employment agreement before signing it, so as to ensure that they do not agree to any violation of their rights.

The rules of intestacy typically come up when dividing someone's estate after they pass on.

Yet, like anything else, learning the rules of intestacy can be very useful. It may be a strong skill or piece of knowledge for particular jobs, such as those required to track down relatives. Likewise, it’s important to learn when you're charged as an Executor. In many cases, it’s a learning experience and skill development opportunity in itself.

That said, it’s still a difficult process, so seeking additional help may be advisable. Co-op Intestacy, for instance, can help make a lot of this process easier. This involves understanding the rules of intestacy as well as when it may actually be required.

The rules of intestacy

The rules themselves have been in place since 1925. Essentially, they dictate the next of kin. The process itself can be rather complex but some key points are:

The spouse is usually the first person to consider, followed by the immediate family, such as children, siblings and parents.

After this, intestacy looks to the next 'class' of kin with a living heir. If no living heir can be found in this class, the next class is looked into, and so forth.

Rules of intestacy only consider blood and registered relatives. This means married or civil partners are included, but unregistered partners are not. Likewise, blood related children and adopted children are considered, but step-relatives are usually not. An exception would be step-children directly adopted by the deceased.

When is it used?

The best example of intestacy is when someone dies without a will, known as dying intestate. Since there are no instructions on how to divide the estate, it is separated by rules of intestacy. In a lot of cases, it’s likely the spouse will receive the estate. Yet rules and other regulations determine what the threshold for this is, another reason why you might want professional assistance during this process.

Outside of the spouse, you look to the immediate family. Intestacy, again, has specific rules on what order to distribute the remaining estate. This often involves a working knowledge of the respective family tree, as you'll be looking for the closest surviving class of kin, where at least one member survived the intestate.

As such, one can easily argue that intestacy is a big and difficult legal responsibility and requirement. That said, it’s also a big responsibility and experience in its own right.

A well-constructed retail CV may be the key component in helping you secure a job. Most people tend to think that a retail CV should primarily focus on your past work experience. However, job counselors point out that such a CV should focus on your abilities, knowledge or any other acumen that's directly transferable (this may be occupational or educational) to the job you are applying. Basically, the emphasis in a retail CV, is not necessarily on what you have done, but what you would like to do. Below are tips on how to write a CV when applying for a retail job.

How to Write a Retail CV

*Research
You need to research the position you wish to apply. Do this carefully and identify all the skills and attributes necessary to perform the job at an exemplary level.

*List your personal information
List all your personal demographic information, including your real name, telephone number, mailing address and your e-mail address. This is very important information that can be used by the potential employers to contact you after reviewing your CV.

*Detail your skills
Make sure you detail all the skills and abilities you posses; such skills should be of benefit in the retail job you are applying. Some of the retail skills that can greatly help include budgeting, strategic planning, sales and marketing, procurement, inventory control, language proficiency, computational skills and public speaking.

*Work experience
Detail and also describe your work experience. Start with describing your most recent job experience and then work your backwards chronically to your very first job in the past 10 years. Make sure you highlight your retail experience with some actionable verbs such as developed, managed, and marketed.

*Educational background
You will also need to give detailed information of your educational background. Start by giving a brief description of your most recent education and then work your way backwards chronically up to the last post-secondary institution you attended. Make sure you highlight your retail and sales education; this can be done by listing some sample marketing or business courses you have completed.

*Interests and achievements
List all your interests and achievements as this pertain to the field of sales and retail. You can include any marketing or sales awards you have won in the past and quotas you have met. Also describe the diversity of products you have sold in your past jobs. Avoid including your personal interests such as skydiving, woodworking, needlepoint; this will only detract from the professionalism of your retail CV.

*List your references
Finally you need to list all your references. Make sure you include their contact information. It's important that you contact such people before you list them, ask their permission. Also make sure you choose people who can speak about your professional capabilities and your personal character.

In most cases, your resume will be the first thing your prospective employer will see. It's therefore very important that your resume grabs the hiring manager's attention. Take your time and do more research on how to write a CV when applying for the retail job. With the right information, you will be able to write a catchy CV.

Working as a teaching assistant is a rewarding and popular career that is fairly easy to enter. It can lead to a career as a teacher, and there is also considerable room for career development if you continue to work as a teaching assistant. Here is a detailed guide to the role of a teaching assistant and how to become one if you are interested in a career working with children and young people.

Role of a Teaching Assistant

Teaching assistants work alongside teachers in the classroom, providing them with support and assisting them in a number of ways. The exact role of the teaching assistant depends upon the age of the pupils they are assisting, but it can typically involve working with individuals and groups of pupils, helping children who have learning disabilities, setting up equipment for lessons, keeping the classroom in order and assisting on school trips.

Some teaching assistants specialise in areas such as literacy, arts or numeracy, as well as working with pupils who have special needs. They can work full or part-time hours, making it a very flexible job.

What You Need to Work as a Teaching Assistant

You do not need any formal qualifications to work as a teaching assistant, but it does not hurt to have related qualifications because this can help you to stand out in a competitive market. Local authorities and schools will have their own requirements, so it is a good idea to research the requirements in your local area to find out what exactly is expected.

At the most basic level, teaching assistants require solid reading, writing and numeracy skills. You should also have some experience working with children before you apply for a position because this is normally a minimum requirement. This could involve volunteering at your local youth club, helping children learn to read or any other voluntary role.

You will also be required to carry out a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check before you are given a position as a teaching assistant. This is essential to ensure the safety of children and young people in schools.

Key Skills You Should Possess

As well as solid reading, writing and numeracy skills, you should also possess good communication skills if you want to work as a teaching assistant. This means being able to communicate naturally both with children and with adults. You will also require patience, creativity and good organisational skills to be a good teaching assistant.

Career Development

Once you start working as a teaching assistant, there are many opportunities for development. You can take more qualifications such as apprenticeships, NVQs and training courses in specific areas (such as working with children who have special needs). You may even be offered various training opportunities by your employer to help you develop your career.

There are also four teaching assistant grades that you can progress to, with the highest being Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs), and you will be required to pass an NVQ to begin to move up the grades. Alternatively, many teaching assistants go on to become qualified teachers, using their experience as a teaching assistant as the first step towards qualifying.

If you become a HLTA, you are likely to be more involved in the classroom and you may also have more responsibility. You might also specialise in a particular area like maths or science.

Could a Teaching Assistant Be Your Ideal Job?

Many people find being a teaching assistant a very rewarding role. If you like working with children and young people, you will find that it is a role that offers a great deal of career satisfaction and provides you with a way to work in an enjoyable and challenging environment.

Paige Burton is a retired classroom monitor who enjoys writing in her spare time. You can find her articles mainly on education and teaching sites. Visit the teaching assistant courses link to learn more.
