That, my dear doctor, is my new Funko POP! Dr. Doom Vinyl Bobble-Head that I ordered from Comicx Hub. I’ve been a very good boy, see. I haven’t missed a single day of work for the last 6 months (that’s some sort of record) so I thought of giving myself a reward. You know, for acting like a responsible professional adult. You’ve got to treat yourself every once in a while for not acting like a man child, that’s what I always say.

I don’t know where I’m going to place it yet but all that matters is that it is mine and this could be the start of my sick collection of Dr. Doom figures and collectibles. And you know what, this could also be the start of a web comic series I’ve always dreamed of creating — DOOM BROS.

It’s about Dr. Doom and Dr. Doom being sassy with each other in between of insulting celebrities, movies, and random people on the Internet. I may have to think more about the concept, but let me know if you’d be interested in reading this kind of dickery. SPOILER: I’d still do it even if no one’s interested.

Aside from the Doom bobble-head, I also got myself the first volume of Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. I probably should’ve ordered the Y: The Last Man volumes I’m still missing, but whatever. They’re pretty common in local bookstores anyway.

I also got an Uncanny Avengers lithograph by Skottie Young because I love the dude’s stuff. I’d like to hang it up somewhere in my room. It would probably take my lazy ass months to actually do it, but it will happen.

I also got this Before Watchmen freebie, whatever it is. I think it’s a bookmark. Meh. I was hoping to get the Marvel NOW! 2013 calendar for free with my order, but I guess they’re out of stock already. Sad face.

I’m hoping to reward myself again in a few months so I’m going to try really hard to stick to professionalism and acting like a proper adult. On that note, let me end this blog entry with DOOM BROS #0:

The Private Eye is the duo’s first foray into DRM-free digital comics territory, offering the 10-issue series for “any price you think is fair”, which includes $0. It’s quite amusing for them to use this distribution route for a story about a future world shaped by the collapse of the Internet. They’re not the first comic book creators to do this DRM-free digital distribution thing, but as far as I know, they’re the most high profile dudes to do so. I’m thinking — and hoping — that other big name creators will follow suit.

Vaughan and Martin have built a world where privacy is of utmost importance. In stark contrast, we live our daily lives now sharing everything on the Internet, from big life events down to the mundane such as a photo of that slice of day-old  pizza you had for breakfast. In the world of The Private Eye, everyone has a secret identity.

It’s not just an eye-opening commentary on this age of social media, oversharing, and information overload though. In the midst of this futuristic world of confidentiality is a detective story starring a dude who wears a pretty cool Cheshire Cat suit.

This first issue doesn’t really give us a lot about the plot of the story, which I guess is important for a detective story. It’s mostly an introduction to how things work in this future world and what Cheshire Dude does for a living, but it does pick up steam towards the end.

If a sci-fi detective story set in a post-Internet world isn’t really your bag of fun, at least you can enjoy the detailed yet clean art by Martin and colorist Muntsa Vicente. Just check out this page:

I enjoyed how cool it sounded at the time, but after a few years, it became corny. Then somehow, it became neither cool nor corny — it just became my plain, boring Internet name that people also tend to use offline. I thought the worst was over. Little did I know that in the early ’10s, “baddie” would take on a whole new different meaning.

Black girls like Nicole over here started mentioning me on Tumblr (R.I.P.) and Twitter. From seeing wacky tweets from my wacky Internet friends, as well as random images of Skeletor dedicated to me by weirdos from Tumblr, I suddenly began seeing sassy and sexy messages from black girls. Apparently, “baddie” now means “sexy sassy girl” or something. Just ask Beyonce’s Instagram.

I didn’t really mind this sassathon, but this morning, black dudes got involved. Oh hell naw.

That’s just wrong, bros. I promote my Twitter handle whenever and wherever I can — including my CV. Just imagine a potential employer checking out my social media cred. They’d be like “Hey, let’s check out this dude’s social media cred. It’s @baddie, right? Let’s see what we’ve got here,” and then BAM! They see tweets involving black dudes and my non-existent vagina.

I consulted Urban Dictionary, one of the most trusted sources of information online, for some insight into the new meaning of “baddie”. Last I checked, “baddie” meant “an evil bad dude in a video game.” Here’s how UD defines “baddie” now:

• One whose video game performance is subpar.
• A very attractive woman.
• Term describing a fan of Canadian musician Bryan Adams.

Really? I tried so hard to make “Baddie” synonymous to awesome villains like Dr. Doom, but the rest of the world decided to make it a term of endearment for sassy black girls, a stupid name for people who suck at video games, and an inexplicable way to describe Bryan Adams fans. Really? Screw that noize.

Here’s a new definition — THE definitive definition — of “baddie”: A name that will no longer be used by Gino Carteciano because screw you guys, you all suck.

I rarely stray away from superhero comics, especially from Marvel, and when I do, I always come crawling back to my Avengers, my X-Men, and my other beloved people in colorful costumes. But I’m always up for some comic book fun outside Marvel, so when I was given the chance to have an advance look at Ehmm Theory #1 from Action Lab: Danger Zone, I took it.

Ehmm Theory is a horror/comedy starring Gabriel Ehmm, some poor bastard who doesn’t seem to know what’s going on and honestly, I don’t think he cares. The book has Brockton McKinney on story, Larkin Ford on art, and Jason Strutz on colors. I always take a look at the credits of a book so I’d know who to blame if my reading experience sucks. Fortunately, these dudes got my attention right off the bat. See, on the very first page of the actual story, I got treated with this gem:

That’s a midget clown zombie getting its head SPLUK-ed. If you want to get my attention, you show me a midget zombie clown getting its head SPLUK-ed. That’s just the kind of comic book reader I am.

The book starts weird, and it gets weirder — just the way I like it. McKinney gives you stuff that makes you go “What?” but he distracts you with awesome stuff so you won’t have to bother yourself with questions as you go from one weird scene to another. As an easily distracted fellow, I had a fun time reading it — especially because there’s a cute talking cat named Mr. Whispers.

On the art and colors side, Ford and Strutz do an excellent job at giving the book a light, cartoonish tone even with some zombie dismemberment. The midget clown zombies kind of look adorable which somehow makes the stuff that happens to them look more awesome.

There’s a bunch of mysteries that barely scratch the surface of what this book is about (actually, I still have no idea what it’s all about), so if you’re one of those nerds who want a substantial amount of story in the first issue, you might find Ehmm Theory #1 a bit lacking. But if you’re like me, a person who wants fun along with a wealth of “What the hell is going on?!” moments, you will find the issue entertaining enough to warrant a look at the next one.

If you’re willing to try out new comic book flavors, give this book a shot. Consider the fact that in this first issue, a dude and his talking cat fight midget clown zombies.
