The Last Airbender Blows

Took my four boys ages 7-11 to see The Last Airbender. It was very disappointing. We’re all fans of the animated series and have watched the episodes repeatedly. So expectations were high about the movie.

The theater was packed. Our kids were in their Taekwondo uniforms along with a two dozen class mates and their instructor. When the movie ended and the lights went on, not a clap. Not a sound. Not even a woohoo! Everybody just walked out with a low murmur.

After the movie, when asked which version they like better (movie vs animated series), all of us agreed the Avatar animated series was better.

Here are the major problems with the movie.

Too much back story to cram in
Bad acting
Boring dialogue
Stupid little things changed for no good reason, like how to pronounce certain names.
[SPOILER ALERT] They explicitly changed established canon from the series in several scenes, especially at the end of this movie when the Avatar should have laid waste to the Fire Nation fleet and kill Admiral Chao. But that all unfolds differently in the movie.

We saw the normal version (not the 3-D version), yet during the scene of the first Earth bender revolt, it was blurry and difficult to watch. Characters were doubled. It was as if someone unintentionally left in 3-D footage that we couldn’t watch without glasses (which we didn’t have).

I loved The Transformers animated series and hated the big movies. But even in that dreck, the director was smart enough to pull in fan-loved declarations like “One Shall Stand and One Shall Fall”; or use the original voice actor for Optimus Prime. But in The Last Airbender, nothing connected me to the series. It was just a reinterpretation with dark, gloomy effects.

Trust me, don’t waste your money on the movie. Rent the series or borrow it from the library. It’s a very cool journey of pain and self discovery, transforming the lives of all the principal characters along the way.

Wimpy Kid Disappoints Parent

We took four boys ages 7-11 to see the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie. Very few laughs. I left feeling numb about it. A day later I can’t think of any memorable moments. Overall I’m disappointed with the movie.

I’ve read the Wimpy Kid book series to my kids several times and we very much enjoyed the books. But the movie adaptation fell flat. It was just dull and boring, minor laughs far and few between. Rotten Tomatoes reviews seem to support that.

Won’t stop me from reading the books again. Plus we can make wimpy caricatures of ourselves at the Wimpy Kid website.

This experience reminds me of my favorite comic strip, Bloom County. At some point, someone thought it would be a great idea to make a Christmas special (A Wish For Wings That Work) with Opus. I remember feeling so disappointed by that interpretation. Boy did it stink (IMHO).

Side rant: I must be getting old because I no longer enjoy the movie theater experience.
$48.00 USD for 2 adult and 4 children at a 5pm weekday movie. We arrived 20 minutes early to get seats didn’t matter since about 20 people showed up. So we sat through 20 minutes of local advertising then another 20 minutes of non-memorable movie trailers before Wimpy kid actually started. Guess what, more talking animal/pet/rodent movies are coming out this summer. *Sigh*

Yes, I’m definitely becoming an old crank. By the way, get off my lawn!

Check Your Kids for Ticks

See the photo on this page of the giant red bullseye. That’s my six year old son’s back. Imagine my horror when he asked me what it was.

My rough and tumble gang of sons have done weird things like drawing on each other and cutting their own hair. So my instinct was this was brother inflicted. My first reaction was to quiz his brothers on what they did to him. But that was a wrong assumption.

It was 7:45am on a Sunday morning. Needless to say by 8:15am we had him at a pediatrician. He started a 21-day antibiotic for this Lyme disease rash. Within three days those scary looking red rings had faded.

Several weeks before we pulled two ticks off his head and one off my leg.

As your family spends more time outdoors this summer, remember to check them not only for bugs, but unusual rashes.

Wear light clothing to make it easier to see unwanted hitchhikers on your body.

Long pants are advisable if planning to trek through the woods.

Mow the lawn regularly to keep the tall grass to a minimum.

Don’t forget to track your mileage for business or job hunting.
Keeping organized throughout the year with software like Quicken or Quickbooks will help you to easily run reports for tax preparation.
Lost a receipt from a major retailer like Home Depot or Target. Ask them to pull up your past purchases associated with your credit card.
File early especially if you’re entitled to a return.

Reminder: Dangers of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that can deprive the body and literally take your breath away. All homes should have CO detectors on all levels of the house, and especially near the sleeping areas. Exposure can produce headaches, sleepiness, fatigue, confusion and irritability at low levels. At higher levels, it can result in nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, impaired vision and coordination and death.

Be aware of potential sources of carbon monoxide including unvented kerosene and gas space heaters, gas water heaters, wood stoves, furnaces and gas stoves. Other common sources are blocked chimneys that are supposed to vent furnaces and fireplaces, and automobile exhaust from attached or unvented garages when vehicles are being warmed up inside the garage.

Open chimney flues when fireplaces are in use.
Inspect and clean chimneys every year.
Do not idle the car inside the garage.
Use the correct fuel in kerosene heaters.
Never use charcoal indoors or in areas without adequate ventilation.
Have a trained professional inspect, clean and tune-up central heating systems like the furnace every year.
Gas appliances must have adequate ventilation to prevent CO from accumulating.
Have operational CO detectors on all levels of your home, and especially near the sleeping areas. If the detector is battery-operated, change the batteries whenever you change the smoke detectors’ batteries, i.e. twice a year – when the time changes.

Synthetic Turf Fields Okay To Play On, Says CPSC

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) staff today released its evaluation of various synthetic athletic fields. The evaluation concludes that young children are not at risk from exposure to lead in these fields.

Although small amounts of lead were detected on the surface of some older fields, none of these tested fields released amounts of lead that would be harmful to children.

As an overall guideline, CPSC staff recommends young children wash their hands after playing outside, especially before eating.

Safety Recall: My Binky Personalized Pacifiers

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a safety recall of the 115,000 My Binky personalized pacifiers. The pacifier button, ring handle and shield with nipple can detach, posing a choking hazard to infants. It was sold at Nordstrom and baby boutique retail stores nationwide and online at www.itsmybinky.com from February 2006 through June 2008 for between $5 and $6.

Action: Take away from child immediately.

Youths and Contact Lenses — Are You Sure They’re Taking Care of Their Eyes?

Wearing contact lenses is a very liberating experience, in both confidence and appearance. But if your young son or daughter is wearing contacts, you should make sure they are properly caring for their eyes and contact lenses.

Disclaimer: I’m not qualified to dispense medical advice, so seek and follow the advice of your eye care professional.

The following are general best practices for eye care health:

Wash your hands with soap and water before handling contact lenses.
Remove contact lenses before swimming.
Don’t rinse/clean contact lenses with tap water.
While cleaning, rub your contact lenses with your fingers, then rinse the lenses with solution before soaking them in cleaning solution.
Rinse the contact lens case with fresh contact lens cleaning solution, not water. Then leave the empty case open to air dry.
Keep the contact lens case clean and replace at least every three months.

Handle your contact lens solution with care:

Do not re-use old solution or “top off” the solution in your lens case.
Do not transfer contact lens solution into smaller travel-size containers. This can affect the sterility of the solution, which can lead to an eye infection.
Do not allow the tip of the solution bottle to come in contact with any surface.
Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

If you have continuous discomfort, go seek medical attention.

Summer is well under way in our neck of the woods. As the kids spend more time outside, we typically think of protecting skin with long sleeves and sunscreen. But it’s also important to include eye care common sense to protect young eyes from the sun.

Eye care safety tips:

Select sunglasses that block Ultraviolet (UV) rays. The ability to block UV light is not dependent on price.
Select sunglasses that block 97 to 100 percent of UV-A rays and UV-B rays.
Choose wrap-around styles so suns rays canâ€™t enter from the sides.
Wear a hat.
Contact lenses don’t provide complete UV protection.
The suns rays can still be harsh on cloudy and hazy days.
UV light can be more intense at higher altitudes.
Never look directly at the sun.
Try to keep children out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sunâ€™s UV rays are the strongest.

Lot’s Of Blame To Go Around

As parents, we face a seemingly futile battle to protect our children against racey content and sexual themes. More and more brands push and eventually cross the “decency” line in the hopes of increased sales. It’s so easy for us to point blame.

So I was quite surprised about this incident with J.C. Penney, a clothing retail store brand that has been struggling against declining in popularity in the United States.

Here’s what happened…

The ad, which surfaced on the Internet after winning a prestigious international advertising award at Cannes this past weekend, shows two teenagers in their own bedrooms stripping down to their underwear and then timing themselves as they race to put on their clothes. All this is done in preparation for the boy and girl to hang out in her basement while her mother is upstairs.

The video, called “Speed Dressing,” ends with the teens heading down to the basement as the words “Today’s the day to get away with it” flash on the screen, echoing Penney’s use of the phrase “Today’s the day to…” in a series of ads it launched last year. Penney’s logo and “Every Day Matters” slogan then appear on the screen.

This video is being rapidly taken down and added by others. It shows two teens practicing to quickly put on their clothes in case they get caught having sex in the basement. You can currently see it here:

The ad was not created by J.C. Penney’s marketing department. Their primary advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi, denies it, yet they apparently commissioned a production company, Epoch Films, to create the spot. Although it was never approved to air as part of a campaign, it was entered into competition and won a Cannes Lions 2008 Film Bronze award. Again Saatchi & Saatchi denies being involved, yet they’re listed in the entry credits. Eventually the commercial made it’s way onto YouTube yielding at least 132,000 views and presumably many more now that the story is out.

Creating ‘spec’ ads is not uncommon in the advertising industry. Often dozens of ideas are tossed for each that actually gets picked up. Even if an idea ends up not being produced, often creative directors and production companies will produce it for their portfolios and to show off their talents.

So even if the intent to air publicly wasn’t there, where’s the common sense?

Just a few weeks ago we all heard how rising Disney star, 15 year old Miley Cyrus, seemed to have been ‘pressured’ into bare-backed photos with veteran photographer Annie Leibovitz for the cover of Vanity Fair. Her famous father was on the set and should’ve had better sense than to permit it. Liebovitz and Vanity Fair downplayed the whole issue.

Whether it’s advertising or photography, doesn’t it seem disturbing that the innocence of youth is constantly chipped away at in favor of egos and ‘creativity?’

I’m in the business and I’m disturbed by it. Maybe I’m a prude. What are your thoughts?

I spent an hour watching variations of the awesome Evolution of Dance video and Thriller wedding videos before I found these surprising videos. The Philippines has been experimenting with dancing as a non-violent approach to rehabilitation. First I thought this was someone’s idea of a joke. But apparently this is the physical fitness program in at least eight prisons in the Philippines.

Star Wars Exhibit at Franklin Institute

Thinking of Having Kids?

This was forwarded to me in email by a father of two — a savvy marketer by day, courageous volunteer fireman by night, creative weekend videographer and all around great guy — who just had his second baby. Do you think he’s exhausted?

We’re not sure who to credit as the original source. But thank you anyway!

Thinking of Having Kids? Do this 11 step program first!

Lesson 1
1. Go to the grocery store.
2. Arrange to have your salary paid directly to their head office.
3. Go home.
4. Pick up the newspaper.
5. Read it for the last time.

Lesson 2
Before you finally go ahead and have children, find a couple who already are parents and berate them about their…
1. Methods of discipline.
2. Lack of patience.
3. Appallingly low tolerance levels.
4. Allowing their children to run wild.
5. Suggest ways in which they might improve their child’s breast feeding, sleep habits, toilet training, table manners, and overall behavior. Enjoy it because it will be the last time in your life you will have all the answers.

Lesson 3
A really good way to discover how the nights might feel…
1. Get home from work and immediately begin walking around the living room from 5PM to 10PM carrying a wet bag weighing approximately 8-12 pounds, with a radio turned to static (or some other obnoxious sound) playing loudly. (Eat cold food with one hand for dinner)
2. At 10PM, put the bag gently down, set the alarm for midnight, and go to sleep.
3. Get up at 12 and walk around the living room again, with the bag, until 1AM.
4. Set the alarm for 3AM.
5. As you can’t get back to sleep, get up at 2AM and make a drink and watch an infomercial.
6. Go to bed at 2:45AM.
7. Get up at 3AM when the alarm goes off.
8. Sing songs quietly in the dark until 4AM.
9. Get up. Make breakfast. Get ready for work and go to work (work hard and be productive)

Repeat steps 1-9 each night. Keep this up for 3-5 years. Look cheerful and together.

Lesson 4
Can you stand the mess children make? To find out…
1. Smear peanut butter onto the sofa and jam onto the curtains.
2. Hide a piece of raw chicken behind the stereo and leave it there all summer.
3. Stick your fingers in the flower bed.
4. Then rub them on the clean walls.
5. Take your favorite book, photo album, etc. Wreck it.
6. Spill milk on your new pillows. Cover the stains with crayons. How does that look?

Lesson 5
Dressing small children is not as easy as it seems.
1. Buy an octopus and a small bag made out of loose mesh.
2. Attempt to put the octopus into the bag so that none of the arms hang out.

Time allowed for this – all morning.

Lesson 6
Forget the BMW and buy a mini-van. And don’t think that you can leave it out in the driveway spotless and shining. Family cars don’t look like that.
1. Buy a chocolate ice cream cone and put it in the glove compartment. Leave it there.
2. Get a dime. Stick it in the CD player.
3. Take a family size package of chocolate cookies. Mash them into the back seat. Sprinkle cheerios all over the floor, then smash them with your foot.
4. Run a garden rake along both sides of the car.

Lesson 7
Go to the local grocery store. Take with you the closest thing you can find to a pre-school child. (A full-grown goat is an excellent choice). If you intend to have more than one child, then definitely take more than one goat. Buy your week’s groceries without letting the goats out of your sight. Pay for everything the goat eats or destroys.

Until you can easily accomplish this, do not even contemplate having children.

Lesson 8
1. Hollow out a melon.
2. Make a small hole in the side.
3. Suspend it from the ceiling and swing it from side to side.
4. Now get a bowl of soggy Cheerios and attempt to spoon them into the swaying melon by pretending to be an airplane.
5. Continue until half the Cheerios are gone.
6. Tip half into your lap. The other half, just throw up in the air.

You are now ready to feed a nine- month-old baby.

Lesson 9
Learn the names of every character from Sesame Street , Barney, Disney, the Teletubbies, and Pokemon. Watch nothing else on TV but PBS, the Disney channel or Noggin for at least five years. (I know, you’re thinking What’s ‘Noggin’?) Exactly the point.

Lesson 10
Make a recording of Fran Drescher saying ‘mommy’ repeatedly. (Important: no more than a four second delay between each ‘mommy’; occasional crescendo to the level of a supersonic jet is required). Play this
tape in your car everywhere you go for the next four years. You are now ready to take a long trip with a toddler.

Lesson 11
Start talking to an adult of your choice. Have someone else continually tug on your skirt hem, shirt- sleeve, or elbow while playing the ‘mommy’ tape made from Lesson 10 above. You are now ready to have a conversation with an adult while there is a child in the room.

This is all very tongue in cheek; anyone who is parent will say ‘it’s all worth it!’ Share it with your friends, both those who do and don’t have kids. I guarantee they’ll get a chuckle out of it. Remember, a sense of humor is one of the most important things you’ll need when you become a parent!

I recently discovered a task manager that is making me become more efficient with my horrible ‘to do’ list habits.

Checkout Remember the Milk. I heard Leo Laporte mention it on one of his excellent podcasts.

Remember the Milk allows you to manage tasks online or via mobile interface. There is a lot of flexibility built into this application:

Organize by category or tags
Sort on various criteria
Enter tasks via email or the online/mobile interface.
Publish to iCal or Google Calendar

I’m very impressed with the flexibility and intuitiveness of this application. For example, if I want a task to repeat, I could type in the repeat field “every 25th” or “every 3rd Sunday” rather than using a clunky calendar and checking of boxes for recurrence.

I’ve been thinking of ditching my Palm Treo 650 to switch to the Apple iPhone. I really love my Treo, but I’m starting to lust over the iPhone. A few things have kept me from switching, a maor one being the lack of a sufficient task (“to do”) application. This application has removed another barrier for me.

So how do you view your tasks offline? The desktop browser version has the ability for an offline mode. That doesn’t exist yet for the mobile versions, but it seems that the developers are looking at a solution.

Definitely check it out. It’s free to sign-up and use the mobile edition. The iPhone edition requires a Pro account at $25/year – very reasonable considering the features the developers have in their road map.
