May 11, 2012 (New York, NY) -Reverend Al Sharpton, President of National Action Network, along with Julian Bond, Chairman Emeritus of NAACP, Melanie Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, and Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery, Civil Rights Icon and President Emeritus of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, released an open letter today embracing President Obama’s position on equality for gay and lesbian individuals in this country.
This followed several calls today between faith and civil rights leaders organized by Rev. Al Sharpton and NAN to encourage a civil debate on this issue and to encourage all individuals to keep all issues of import to our communities in mind in the days ahead.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” As leaders in today’s Civil Rights Movement, we stand behind the President Obama’s belief that same sex couples should be allowed to join in civil marriages. We also affirm that individuals may hold different views on this issue but still work together towards our common goals: fair housing and equitable education, affordable health care and eradicating poverty, all issues of deep and abiding concern for our communities.

President Obama stated his view that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. This is a view that we concur with, because as civil rights leaders we cannot fight to gain rights for some and not for all. At the same time, we acknowledge that the President stated his personal opinion, which everyone is entitled to – both those who agree with him, like us, and those who disagree. The President made clear that his support is for civil marriage for same-sex couples, and he is fully committed to protecting the ability of religious institutions to make their own decisions about their own sacraments.

There will be those who seek to use this issue to divide our community. As a people, we cannot afford such division. It is our hope that conversations on strengthening African American families continue in a civil and respectful way, on all sides, both with those who support the ability of same-sex couples to marry, and those who do not.
We are glad that President Obama has joined Dr. Joseph Lowery, Dr. Julian Bond and so many others in full embrace of equality for gay and lesbian individuals in our country. We also welcome the civil debate on this issue that will surely spring. And we encourage all individuals to keep all issues of import to our communities in mind in the days ahead, and we seek to secure equal justice, opportunity and dignity for all God’s children.

On Wednesday, Feb. 22, activists from all over the congressional district converged on the home of Faye Morrison to be part of a conference call with first lady Michelle Obama.

Before the phone call began, the many women present talked about their reasons for continuing to support President Obama and what it meant not only in their lives but those of their families and especially our grandchildren.

After the call, we dubbed ourselves the Granny's for Obama. The Women for Obama committee organized over 200 of these calls, with the first lady being gracious with her time and calling in to many of them, some of them a few at a time. Participants were as close as Faye Morrison's sitting room and some as far away as the state Faye was born in: Alaska. They ranged from the very young, a college group of lawyers in Washington, D.C., to our granny squad.

The first lady closed her remarks by taking some brief questions and then letting us know it was time to go and make sure her daughters had done their homework and were ready for bed.

Women for Obama are planning many more events like this where they can ask for the help they need but also bring us together with our neighbors to talk about the issues that are important to us. I have to say I enjoyed not only the honor of hearing from the first lady, but also hosting a large group of activist women who I have never met but I am so looking forward to working with.

CNN Poll: Obama approval rating back to 50% mark

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama's approval rating is back to 50% for the first time in more than eight months, and he currently holds an edge against all the remaining Republican presidential candidates in hypothetical head-to-head match-ups, according to a new national survey.

And a CNN/ORC International Poll released Wednesday also indicates that the GOP's advantage on enthusiasm has been erased, and that the number of Americans who think things are going well in the country is on the rise. Six out of ten say things are going poorly in the country, but four out of ten say things are going well, up 15 points since November.

From BWFO Networker in DC: President Obama spoke to supporters at a campaign fundraising event in Washington, DC. In his remarks he outlined the accomplishments of his administration and spoke about challenges ahead. He emphasized that it was going to be much more difficult for him in 2012 and that he needs his supporters now more than ever. He stated that he was going to need more time to accomplish what he set out to do and that he believed that he could win again with he help of his supporters.
