Baltimore Police Department Media Release

Our office is closing right now because of this release. They want employees to be safe. I admire them for that.

T. Rowe closed. U of M closed. Lexington Market is closing early. All of this due to the “credible threat.”

And maybe it’s true, but timing is suspect, and it makes me angry.

I’m angry because it feels like a PR tactic by BPD. It feels like fear mongering. It feels like after small (and I do mean small) eruptions late in the day on Saturday that all the peace is being met with by force.

Most of the day yesterday there wasn’t much happening because in Baltimore - even the gangs know that Sunday is a day of rest. There was one protest I caught wind of down at Central Booking for the release of those who were charged in relation to the protest. Those 40 individuals were met by police holding riot gear.

I’m a fairly law-abiding citizen, and I respect the role that police play in society when executed properly. But what we have here in the case of Freddie Gray, and so many countless others, is a breakdown in the system. The police have racially profiled and brutalized a specific segment of Baltimore’s population (and might I add also the majority of Baltimore) for far too long.

I was taught to trust the police. But I can’t right now.

[Note: I wrote this awhile ago, but for some reason didn’t publish it, I’m publishing it now because I think it still applies]

A late night thought…

Being newly single… well, okay maybe not new, but after being in relationships for the better part of the past 4 years, 4 months doesn’t seem like long.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my art, why I’m doing what I’m doing. How can I take more risks, how can a push myself further. I’m to a point in my life where I’m ready to take that next step, I’m ready to go bolder and bigger.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about relationships, or maybe just the way humans interact when it comes to affairs of the art.

I think I’ve come to a conclusion though…

The way one approaches love (and I mean all forms of it), should be the way an artist approaches their art.

I was taught early on to “Dare to Suck” in my art, which is another way of saying daring to fail. The best art comes from that place of not knowing whether it will crumble if you breathe too hard.

The same goes for relationships/love/friendships/etc.

The people worth keeping around are the ones you’re willing to take a risk with. It’s not about getting it right, but being willing to say fuck the future, focus on the now and let fate guide you to the right place.

It’s a terrifying place to live. It’s scary and full of doubt. You’re not sure what’s going to come next.

That’s when you hold on tight and dive in deep, regardless of what awaits you on the flip side.

The best art takes risk. The best people are those you are willing to risk for.

I used to protest. I used to stand for something.

Right now in the midst of downtown Baltimore, 2 blocks from my place of employment a protest is happening for Freddie Gray.

I care about what is happening right now, deeply. The systemic persecution of “suspects” and the taking of their lives through acts of police brutality is not okay.

I’ve cried for Mike Brown, I’ve cried for Eric Garner, I cry for Freddie Gray. And I cry for those who haven’t been mentioned on a national scale.

Baltimore has had a police brutality for a very long time. I’ve heard stories since the moment I moved to Baltimore almost 8 years ago. And it pains me to not be there with the protesters marching on City Hall right now.

You may be asking “well if she cares so much, why the fuck isn’t she there?”

One reason - my kid. Now he should be the reason I go, and when he gets a bit older, we will go, together. We will talk about what is happening, and I will do my best to raise a child that will stand up to things that are wrong. Right now, I can’t risk getting arrested or hurt during a protest because I do this mom thing alone.

So I sit back. Impatient, upset, with no outlet for my rage than to bitch online or engage others in (what I hope is) meaningful discussion.

But what I will do is read. Read everything I can. Google until my fingers fall off. Share what I find. Write about what I find.

I will watch what happens, and I will help spread the word of it happening. It’s the least I can do, many people have lost their lives in this, and that is not okay.

If you care what is happening (and I hope you do), Baltimore City Paper is doing important coverage of these events. Between Baynard’s articles, and Joe’s photos, they at least make me feel like I know what is going on.
