GLENDALE, AZ - December has been a quite a month for the multi-platinum rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers including a Grammy nomination for “Rock Album of the Year,” the announcement of their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and now newly added dates for the North American leg of their I’m With You World Tour in January. Tickets for the March 2^nd Glendale Jobing.com Arena show go on sale on Saturday, December 17^th at 10am.  The 2012 arena tour will be the band’s first full-scale tour of the U.S. since 2007 when they hit the road in support of 2006’s Stadium Arcadium.  Joining the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be Janelle Monáe.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are currently touring Europe through mid-December in support of I’m With You, which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart and No. 1 on Billboard’s Rock and Alternative album charts, as well as on the Top Internet Albums and iTunes Top Alternative Albums chart. The first single “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie,” hit the top spot at Modern Rock radio, giving the band its 12^th No. 1 at the format. We are sorry to say Kings of Leon are canceling their entire US tour due to Caleb Followill suffering from vocal issues and exhaustion. The band is devastated, but in order to give their fans the shows they deserve, they need to take this break. Unfortunately, the US dates cannot be rescheduled due to the band’s international tour schedule. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase. Tickets purchased online or via phones will be automatically refunded.

This includes the Kings of Leon’s stop at the Ashley Furniture Home Store Pavilion (formerly the Cricket Wireless Pavilion) on September 6th.

Atlantic recording group Death Cab for Cutie has unveiled details of their upcoming fall tour.  The dates – which celebrate the recent release of the band’s critically acclaimed new album, “CODES AND KEYS” – begin September 30^th in Cincinnati and then continue through a major hometown headline show at Seattle’s Key Arena at Seattle Center on October 22^nd (see attached itinerary). Furthermore, DCFC will also be among the headline acts appearing at Sunrise, Florida’s annual Langerado Music Festival on October 8^th and San Francisco’s Treasure Island Music Festival on October 16^th.

Death Cab for Cutie will be accompanied on their upcoming schedule by an extraordinary range of special guests, including Telekinesis (September 30^th through October 11^th), Explosions In The Sky (October 15^th), The Hold Steady (October 18^th – 21^st), and The Head And The Heart (October 22^nd).  Presale tickets for all dates except the previously announced Key Arena show will be available to members of the band’s official fan club, DCFC Union Local #1138, beginning Wednesday, August 3^rd.  All remaining tickets will then go on sale to the general public starting on Friday, August 5^th.  For further details and as-yet-unannounced tour information, please visit www.deathcabforcutie.com.

Death Cab for Cutie has only just embarked on their much-anticipated summer headline tour, set to travel North America through late August. The band has spent much of the past few months on the road, beginning in May with a sold-out tour of intimate venues across North America and followed by a series of European headline dates and festival appearances.

Death Cab for Cutie will celebrate the success of “CODES AND KEYS” with a live performance on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman, slated for September 28^th.  In addition they will be filming a performance for PBS’ “Live from the Artists’ Den” in coming weeks to air later this year.

Arizona Opera and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present a free outdoor screening of Arizona Opera’s production of Puccini’s La bohème, one of the best-loved operas of all time, on Saturday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater.

Filmed live in 2010 at Symphony Hall in Phoenix, Arizona Opera’s La bohème recreates 19th-century Paris as the setting for the romance of the beautiful and frail seamstress Mimi and the poet Rodolfo. (The young lovers and their Bohemian circle of friends were the inspiration for the Broadway smash Rent.) Arizona Opera singers will perform live prior to the screening.

(Phoenix – January 20, 2011) — Pop superstar Katy Perry announced yesterday via a live appearance on Facebook that her California Dreams 2011 world tour is coming to North America this summer. The North American leg of the tour will start on June 7th in Atlanta, GA and will run through August 14th with two hometown shows in Katy’s hometown Santa Barbara, CA. To support her platinum-selling sophomore album Teenage Dream (EMI’s Capitol Records), Katy will kick off the California Dreams tour on February 20th in Lisbon, Portugal, traveling throughout Europe, the UK, Australia and Japan before hitting stateside in June. The tour makes a stop in Phoenix for one night at Comerica Theatre on Wednesday, August 3. The show is scheduled to start at 7:30pm.

Katy is planning on interacting with fans through social media networks throughout the California Dreams tour. Using Facebook Places/Deals, fans will be able to check in to the venues each night to receive special treats. Fans’ will also be able to submit their own photos of the show via Twitter which will be incorporated into the live show and also live on katyperry.com. As announced last week, Katy will perform at this year’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Feb. 13th. (Phoenix – Tuesday January 18^th) -  One of the truly successful tours of 2010, Live Nation announced today that Phoenix will be among a number of dates on the revered RUSH TIME MACHINE TOUR 2011.  Returning to North America for a selection of dates between March and July, the band will be performing primarily in markets not played on the previous tour.  The Time Machine Tour is an evening with Rush; performing their classics, providing a taste of the future, and featuring the legendary Moving Pictures album live in its entirety. The tour will make a stop here in Phoenix on Thursday, June 16 at US Airways Center.  The show is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.

Rush – Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart – is without question one of the most inventive and compelling groups in rock history, equally famed for both its virtuoso musicianship and provocative songwriting.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE EXHIBITION?

BODY WORLDS aims to educate the public about the inner workings of the human body and show the effects of poor health, good health, and lifestyle choices. It is also presented in the hopes that it will stimulate curiosity about the science of anatomy.

COULDN’T I LEARN JUST AS MUCH FROM BOOKS OR MODELS OF HUMAN ANATOMY?

Real human bodies show the details of disease and anatomy that cannot be shown with models. They also allow us to understand how each body has its own unique features, even on the inside.

WHERE DID THE SPECIMENS ON DISPLAY COME FROM? WILL WE KNOW WHO THE PLASTINATES ARE OR HOW THEY DIED?

The BODY WORLDS exhibitions rely on the generosity of body donors; individuals who bequeathed that, upon their death, their bodies could be used for educational purposes in the exhibition. All of the full-body plastinates and the majority of the specimens are from these body donors; some specific specimens that show unusual conditions and fetuses on display come from old anatomical collections and morphological institutes. As agreed upon by the body donors, their identities and causes of death are not provided. The exhibition focuses on the nature of our bodies, not on providing personal information.

WHAT IS PLASTINATION?

Invented by scientist and anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977, Plastination is the groundbreaking method of halting decomposition and preserving anatomical specimens for scientific and medical education. Plastination is the process of extracting all bodily fluids and soluble fat from specimens, replacing them through vacuum-forced impregnation with reactive resins and elastomers, and then curing them with light, heat, or certain gases, which give the specimens rigidity and permanence.

WILL I BE ABLE TO TOUCH ANY OF THE PLASTINATES?

While visitors are able to get very close to the plastinates, they are not allowed to touch them.

WHY ARE THE PLASTINATES POSED THE WAY THEY ARE?

The poses of the plastinates have been carefully thought out and serve educational aims. Each plastinate is posed to illustrate different anatomical features. For instance, the athletic poses illustrate the use of muscle systems while playing sports. The poses allow visitors to relate the plastinates to their own bodies.

IS THIS EXHIBITION APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN?

More than 32 million people, including young children, have viewed the BODY WORLDS exhibitions around the world. It is important to note that the exhibition includes full-body plastinates with exposed genitals. Children under 17 must be accompanied by responsible adults during their visit.

CAN I TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS OR FILM IN THE EXHIBITION?

Photography and filming, including pictures taken with cell phones, are not allowed in BODY WORLDS, except by accredited members of the media.

Starting Tuesday a new food related directory has gone live and is dedicated to an aspect of the foodie culture/scene that doesn’t get much play in the Greater Phoenix area. Gluten-Free dining. I’ve been noticing that there are a great many restaurants in and around Phoenix that has full or partial Gluten Free dining. The problem is that no one knows where to go.

The Gluten-Free Directory is aimed at a national audience but I know that there are TONS of local restaurants, bakeries, stores, and other services that cater to people that choose a Gluten-Free lifestyle.

Listings in this directory are free (although there are paid options that provide premium links in the directory) and I encourage any or all of you who cater or live a gluten-free lifestyle to get yourself listed here.

INDIO, CA-The day that everyone has been waiting for is here.  The Coachella 2011 lineup was announced late Tuesday night and they have a great lineup in store for fans.

The Coachella Festival takes place April 15th, 16th and 17th at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.

Among the acts featured are headliners Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, and Kane West.

Spring Training is just around the corner as is the on sale ticket date for the brand new Salt River Fields, the new Spring Training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Spring Training tickets go on sale to the general public Monday January 17th at 10 AM Arizona time.

D-Backs Fan Fest returns in February

The Arizona Diamondbacks will host the seventh annual D-backs FanFest on Feb. 12 to the general public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chase Field. The free event will include autographs and photograph sessions with current players, coaches, alumni and broadcasters on the field at Chase Field.

D-backs players slated to attend include Brandon Allen, Geoff Blum, Sam Demel, Stephen Drew, Barry Enright, David Hernandez, John Hester, Daniel Hudson, Kelly Johnson, Ian Kennedy, Kam Mickolio, Miguel Montero, Melvin Mora, Kevin Mulvey, Xavier Nady, Jordan Norberto, Joe Paterson, J.J. Putz, Ryan Roberts, Joe Saunders, Konrad Schmidt, Daniel Stange, Brian Sweeney, Justin Upton, Chris Young and Zach Duke. Coaches participating include manager Kirk Gibson, hitting coach Don Baylor, pitching coach Charles Nagy, bullpen coach Glenn Sherlock, bench coach Alan Trammell, third base coach Matt Williams and first base coach Eric Young. Broadcasters Tom Candiotti, Mark Grace, Jeff Munn, Miguel Quintana, Greg Schulte, Oscar Soria and Daron Sutton will also be in attendance as well as Luis Gonzalez and other former D-backs players. TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University cornerback Omar Bolden, after consulting with family members, the ASU coaching staff and the National Football League, has decided to remain in school and play his senior season in 2011.

“I’ve built special relationships with these guys on the team,” said Bolden. “Not only are they teammates, but I see these guys as family. I wanted to finish that with them. I feel like I started something with them here and I feel like I need to finish it with my guys. I feel like we can be very special this upcoming season.”

Bolden, who was one of only four unanimous selections for the 2010 All-Pacific-10 Conference First-Team as selected by the league’s coaches, had spent the last month in fact-gathering mode while mulling a decision to declare for early entry to the 2011 NFL Draft.

“My family and I talked in great depth about weighing the pros and cons of leaving school early,” said Bolden. “I started off by thanking everyone in the beginning and I’d like to thank my coaches again. They have been very supportive through the whole decision making process. It was obvious that they wanted the best for me. They were going to support me in either decision I made. I’m just fortunate to be around a great coaching staff.”

Bolden, from Ontario, California, led ASU with three interceptions for 85 yards and one touchdown and collected 52 tackles, including 37 solo stops, in 2010. Bolden added three tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and one forced fumble. He also returned 11 kickoffs for 321 yards and a 29.2-yard average. He returned one 97 yards for a touchdown against Wisconsin. For his special teams play, Bolden also was named Second-Team All-Pac-10 Conference in 2010 as a kickoff return specialist.

In March of 2010 Bolden was granted an additional year of eligibility for the Sun Devil football team, as his medical hardship petition was approved by the Pac-10. Bolden missed almost the entire 2009 season due to injury.

“I’m ready to bring that Pac-12 Championship back to Tempe. I’m ready to set it off right for the 2011 season.”

Right now, this site still has TONS of BCS National Championship Game Tickets still available. However, since the game is officially sold out and demand is at an all time high ticket prices have sky rocketed.

Now that 2010 is in the books, I thought it would be time to deliver a year-end wrap-up. We have exceeded all expectations for visitors across all our sites reaching 80,000 unique visitors a month. In the process, we reached maximum capacity on our previous servers forcing us to move to improved servers.

As you probably noticed during the month of December our sites (except for the AZ Vibe Coyotes site) was not very active in the publishing department across the board. As with all expansion comes growth and changes in all aspects of business. With AZ Vibe, I felt that I was spreading the operations a little thin.

I spent the month of December re-evaluating what has worked and didn’t work across the board as well as looking at where the site was at once the Christmas season started.

When I started this site on June 25 of 2008, it was a challenge to see if there are cultural events around town. Since then, the site underwent exponential growth with new opportunities to make an impact on the Greater Phoenix Area.

However, one of the challenges of being an Editor is knowing when to say ‘no’ to story ideas and story pitches. When going through the pitching process, trying to make an impact on the community has made me say ‘yes’ to numerous pitches when I should not have. As a result, the topics covered and the magnitude of the articles written or were to be written spiraled out of control.

What I decided during the downtime in December, is to re-focus the mission on the main site to the following categories:

Local Sports
Local/Cultural Events
Food/Wine
Entertainment

Any pitching of stories that don’t fall into these categories will no longer be accepted for publication on the main site.

HOWEVER….

I have decided to leverage the AZ Vibe social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Tumblr, and YouTube) for articles, news, and other items that don’t make the cut for the main site.

In regards to the other AZ Vibe sites, I personally have been looking for an ASU Sports and Arizona Diamondbacks beat writer for quite some time but have not been successful in finding talented and dedicated (key term here) writers for either of these beats. I always found either a talented writer or a dedicated writer but not both.

For now, we are going to stop posting new ASU Sports news and articles on our ASU Sports site. All ASU Sports articles from here on out, will be posted on our main site until a time where we can send a beat writer out on a regular basis. The AZ Vibe ASU Sports site will remain live for the time being.

Phoenix Coyotes/NHL/Hockey coverage on the AZ Vibe Coyotes site will remain unchanged. If you have noticed, a new site cosmetic was installed a few days ago. This is temporary and designed for improved readability and to make the site load as fast as possible. Once the NHL season ends, a new site cosmetic will be located and installed.

As you note from the ‘About Us’ section at the bottom of the main page (on the AZ Vibe Coyotes site), the mission of the site is to fill in the gaps in local coverage. That still stands today. However, I’m playing around with the little things that work and don’t work for the site and coverage in general.

I am also listening very closely to Phoenix Coyote fan/reader feedback about the site and have implemented changes accordingly. For example, the recent change of the site cosmetics for the remainder of the season and adding transcribed articles of interviews/conference calls is the direct result of fan/reader feedback. Your comments are always welcome may they be positive or negative.
