FAIRBORN, Ohio – The U.S. Air Force has awarded a contract of up to $5 million over five years to Wright State University for research related to unmanned aerial vehicles.

Wright State will do the work through the Wright State Research Institute, with faculty from the Ohio Center of Excellence in Human Centered Innovation, and several corporate members, including Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), Aptima Inc., SelectTech Services Corp., and Applied Research Associates Inc (ARA).

DAYTON, Ohio – Representatives from the Dayton region will join forces next week in Washington, D.C. at North America’s largest gathering of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).

Five organizations will promote the Dayton region’s growing UAS industry at “Unmanned Systems North America 2011,” the premiere symposium of its kind produced by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).

The event will take place August 16 – 19, 2011.

While the Air Force awaits NASA's decision on its request to display a retired space shuttle orbiter in the National Museum on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, its own shuttle – the secretive X-37B – successfully landed today.

A retired space shuttle in the National Museum of the United States Air Force would become a tool for STEM learning programs in Ohio and perhaps beyond, a state education official said last week in a letter to the space agency.

The letter by Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction Deborah Delisle to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden follows one from the Ohio Division of Tourism promoting the National Museum as an ideal place to make a retired shuttle orbiter accessible to citizens.

Philip McKeachie and his sister Lecia Lamphere, both of Michigan, received brief orientation flights at a press conference that announced plans to re-enact the cargo flight on Saturday, Oct. 2. "It brought tears to my eyes," McKeachie said.

Today's planned launch of the X-51A Waverider hypersonic jet was delayed for a day after an ocean vessel entered the test range several hundred miles off the Pacific coast, the Air Force announced this afternoon.

A U.S. Navy P-3 aircraft supporting the test was making a safety sweep over the Pacific Ocean test range to check for shipping traffic shortly after noon Eastern time (9 a.m. Pacific time)Tuesday when its crew discovered a ship steaming in international waters underneath a block of restricted airspace located in the vicinity of the X-51A's potential splashdown zone, the announcement said.

A B-52 from the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. was preparing to take off with the X-51A mounted under its wing when the mission was scrubbed due to the ship's presence.

Weather permitting, the X-51A will make its first hypersonic flight attempt Wednesday, May 26.

The Air Force's KC-X tanker jet program is a competition again with the announcement Tuesday, April 20, that the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. (EADS) will bid on the $35 billion program.

EADS said its North American unit will enter its KC-45 in the competition and build the Airbus A330 derivative in a new plant in Alabama. The Air Force's Aeronautical Systems Center manages the KC-X program office at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

The first Air Force spaceplane poised for launch this week has its roots in research at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

An unmanned, winged space vehicle called the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle is scheduled for launch on Thursday, April 22, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on a Lockheed-Martin Atlas V rocket.

But the X-37B reflects decades of research and development work on hypersonic flight and winged-re-entry vehicles conducted or directed at Wright-Patterson. The launch is coming as the National Museum of the United States Air Force seeks one of NASA's space shuttle orbiters.

The 4,000-square-foot Assured Aerospace Fuels Research Facility is to support the Air Force’s objective of meeting half its jet-fuel needs with fuels made from domestic sources by the year 2016.

It will be capable of producing 15 to 25 gallons of alternative aviation fuel per day to support research by the Fuels Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Propulsion Directorate.

MIAMISBURG, Ohio – Another chapter in the Dayton region's history of space exploration ended today when the European Space Agency switched off its distant Ulysses spacecraft. Orbiting the sun in the cold reaches of space far beyond earth, Ulysses was freezing, but its plutonium-powered generator powered the spacecraft's radio until the end, more than 18 years after its launch.

DAYTON, Ohio – The Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger has added more flying acts to its already busy schedule for the 2009 show on July 18 and 19 at Dayton International Airport, organizers announced today. A Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit bomber is scheduled to make a flyby on Saturday, and the U.S. Army Reserve will demonstrate an AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopter both days of the weekend event.

TROY, Ohio – Historic WACO Field buzzed with activity today as members of the National WACO Club flew in for lunch at the WACO Historical Society's hangar and museum. Seventeen aircraft made the hop from Mount Vernon, where the club is holding its 50th annual fly-in and 51st annual meeting, organizers said. Approximately 70 club members flew or drove to WACO Field, WACO Historical Society Executive Director Karen Purke said.

The city of Dayton all but shut down a century ago on June 17 to welcome home the Wright brothers on their return from Europe. The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park’s centennial celebration for the inventors of the airplane was much more modest on Saturday, June 20, but it had one thing the first celebration lacked: A Wright Flyer flyover.
