Traveling the Old Lincoln Highway thru Lancaster

Lincoln Highway, named for our 16th President, was the first automobile road to cross the US. And in Lancaster County, you can follow some of the old 1915 highway and enjoy many of the sights from long ago. You can occasionally see the original markers that say things such as "47 M to P, 15 to L" meaning 47 miles to Philadelphia and 15 miles to Lancaster. Although many of the old tourist courts are gone now, there are still some of the diners and shops that have been around for years.

On the east side of town some of the old restaurants are still in business. The Revere Tavern dates back to 1740. Dutch Haven was built in 1946 offering PA Dutch cooking and souvenirs. Today they are famous for their shoo-fly pies. Miller's Smorgasbord originally opened in 1929 for tourists traveling the Old Lincoln Highway. Although it has been renovated through the years, it still offers traditional cooking including "seven sweets and seven sours" with each meal! And just down the road is Jennie's Diner, one of the original 1950's dining car style diners.

There are also a few of the old motels nestled among the modern strip of restaurants, shops and lodging establishments. And the 1960's amusement park, Dutch Wonderland.

On the west side of Lancaster there is still one of the old Tourist Courts still in business. An occasional diner will also pop up in the towns of Mountville and Columbia. In Columbia, the road crosses the river to York County. The original Lincoln Highway bridge was demolished in 1964, but you can still see the stone piers from the modern bridge. The old bridge was originally a wooden covered bridge burned down to halt the Confederate Army during the Civil War, but replaced with a steel structure in 1897. The problem with the bridge was that cars and trains had to share it, and it didn't always work out!

There is so much history in Lancaster County. And as you drive down the old Lincoln Highway, you may catch a glimpse of what travelers saw almost 100 years ago!

Water Sports in Lancaster County PA

Now that the weather is staying warm, and summer is fast approaching, it’s time to start planning paddling trips, or leisurely waterside lounging. Lancaster County is located between the Susquehanna River, and the Schuylkill River, which allows for many recreational summertime activities. Choose one of the 38 Authentic Bed and Breakfasts as your home base, before deciding which of the following trips you’d like to take this summer!

If you have your own kayak, canoe, or boat, then head to the historic Conestoga River. It is a Class 1 scenic river that flows for 60 miles, before emptying in the Susquehanna River. For more information on launch sites and landmarks, visit the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation.

If you’d like to rent a kayak or canoe, visit Shanks Mare in Wrightsville. They offer lessons, as well as rentals and even have evening paddles where you go out at dusk and then have dinner at The Rookery.

On the Schuylkill River, you can rent kayaks, tubes, canoes, and rafts at the Reading River Tribe. These trips include Class II rapids, and the company will shuttle you to your beginning point, so you can end at their location. Be sure to make a reservation before arriving!

For a traditional day at the pool, visit Adamstown Community Pool, or Lititz Springs Pool. And for something different, visit Mount Gretna Lake and Beach. The swim and recreation facility is open to the public for a daily fee. You will be entertained all day, and really feel like you’re at the beach! They have everything from diving boards and tube/kayak/canoe rentals to picnic sites and a snack bar. They even have a diving board, a swing over the water, and a sand volleyball court!

Your last option to spend some time on the water is in Harrisburg, PA. The Pride of the Susquehanna offers riverboat cruises during the day, and even a dinner cruise. Check their calendar for entertainment cruises, or book a private cruise for a special occasion! How will you spend your summer on the water?

Amish Schoolhouses in Lancaster County

One of the many charming aspects of Lancaster County is it’s quaint, one-room schoolhouses. As you drive through the countryside you will see these structures dotting farmland throughout the county.

Several of these schools are historic and date back to the 1800’s, while others are relatively new. In fact, in recent years the Old Order Amish have been constructing approximately 5 one-room school buildings per year. This is due to the region’s growing Amish population and subsequent surging attendance at existing schools. The schoolhouses are typically taught by a young, unmarried woman. The children are instructed in basic skills such as: reading, writing, spelling, geography and practical math. The school does not have electricity or automatic running water.

Each one-room school serves an average of 30 students and is within walking distance of their homes. Most of the

children attend until 8^th grade and then go on to have a structured learning program supervised by their parents at home. Come visit Lancaster County and enjoy viewing these charming schoolhouses for yourself!

Herr's Snack Food and Factory Tour

You are invited on a tour through Herr's Snack Food Factory located in Nottingham Pennsylvania, just a few minutes outside Lancaster County. On the tour you will learn how James Herr in 1946 started this family business by buying a potato chip company in Willow Valley Pennsylvania. Out growing that location the factory was relocated for expansion and still continues in the Herr family. A very interesting story and history is presented in a large theater, followed by a tour that continues in groups viewing many of the processes of manufacturing various snack foods from cheese puffs to corn chips and everyone's favorite potato chips. Enjoy a sample freshly made and still warm. Thousands of people tour each week from Monday through Thursday. You will need to call in advance to make a reservation. Exciting Events in Lancaster County

Make your plans now to see some of the exciting events available in Lancaster County.

For those who read Beverly Lewis books, you'll enjoy the musical talent during "The Confession" Musical running through Nov. 30^th, 2012 at the Bird-in-Hand Family restaurant and Stage. If possible, avoid seating in the last 5 rows as the performance is very hard to see due to the fact the chairs are all on the same level. Most days only has one performance and usually sells out, as it is a small space, so make your plans now for this experience.

By now you must have heard about "Jonah" at the Sight and Sound Theater. What an amazing display for the eyes, wonderful musical talent for the ears and the whole story about Jonah and the Whale. Don't forget to look up during the underwater scene, if you aren't in the balcony. Jonah runs through Dec. 31, 2012 .

"Country Classics" is the focus of the new show at the American Music Theater . It runs through June 30th. They also have Johnny Mathis on May 19^th , Ray Price & gene Watson on May 20^th and Glen Campbell on May 21^st. Check their web site for more of the Celebrity series. Join the Rainbow Dinner Theater until May 26^th for “The Dixie Swim Club”. For you fellows, you'll find out what women talk about when they get together with college buddies. They reminisce about the "good old days" and catch up on what is happening now. If you can't make it here in May...well, from June 5-August 5 you get to enjoy "Things My Mother Taught Me. This is a brand new comedy. It is always a good laugh at the Rainbow Dinner Theater. They are also an Authentic B&B Association's Passport partner.

Irving Berlin's "Annie Get Your Gun" is onstage at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater through June 17th. It will be hard not to sing along with “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better”. Another Authentic Passport partner.

"Miss Saigon" is coming to the Fulton Theater June 6 through July 8. If you've never been to a production at the Fulton put it on your list of things to do while in Lancaster, PA. It will blow you away.

If you are not into theater, check out the Role of Railroads in PA during the Civil War. You'll find this tidbit of history at the Railroad Museum of PA in Strasburg. Another Authentic Passport partner.

The 29^th Annual Demuth Garden Tour is June 9^th & 10^th. What treasures you will discover in the creative urban gardens and unique home interiors of Lancaster residences as you stroll from house to house. This is always a fun event.

Masonic Village Farm Market

Ah, spring is definitely in the air. I love this time of year. There is something so special about seeing a robin or spring flowers blooming and knowing that warm weather and fresh Lancaster County fruits and vegetables are not far away. Each year at this time I start thinking about getting out in my garden and starting to dig. As an Innkeeper I find there is not enough time to have a large garden but I usually try to at least plant some lettuce, herbs that I like to cook with and definitely some tomatoes. For all the other wonderful fruits and vegetables that I enjoy cooking I usually go to one of my favorite local farm markets, Masonic Village Farm Market in Elizabethtown.

They always have a great selection of local produce, and when available some from a local organic gardener as well.

They are open daily from April 1^st through December, Monday Through Saturday 8am to 5 pm, Sunday Noon to 4 pm (Sundays- June, July and August). They are also open January through March on Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 8am to 1pm.

Masonic Village Farm Market has been offering quality local produce since 1910, much of what they offer is grown at Masonic Village with the remainder from local Lancaster County farms. Masonic Village Farm Market is also the 2^nd largest tree fruit producer in Lancaster County. They grow wonderful apples, pears, cherries, plums and some of the best peaches around. The Farm Market also bakes delicious pies daily for you to enjoy. I enjoy their fruit butters as well, especially the apple butter. They have a large selection including butters without sugar and spice. And you can’t forget to take home some of their preserves, jellies, or jams, too.

So put Masonic Village Farm Market on your list for a great place to stop the next time you are in Lancaster County.

Middle Creek Wildlife

Every year at this time, thousands of bird-watchers flock to Middle Creek Wildlife

Management Area to view tens of thousands of migrating Snow Geese and Tundra Swans. These migratory waterfowl winter in the Chesapeake Bay region and migrate north in the spring to nesting grounds in in the arctic region of northern Canada. They tend to move through quickly in late fall, but on their return trip north they stop over at Middle Creek for several weeks in late February and early March. Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is operated by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and provides Habitat for a variety of waterfowl, songbirds, a nesting pair of Bald Eagles, and a host of other wildlife.

This year there is estimated to be 65,000 Snow Geese and 2,400 Tundra Swans. The prime viewing area is at Willow Point, which is accessible by the short, paved Willow Point Trail. Geese can also be viewed along the driving tour route that is open starting on March 1. The Visitors Center at Middle Creek offers a great collection of mounted wildlife, a touch-n-feel bin and activities for kids, as well as other educational exhibits and song-bird viewing. An extensive network of hiking trails of various difficulty levels is available at Middle Creek and the surrounding game lands.

Third Annual Quilters' Convention 2012

The 3rd Annual AQS Quilt Show in Lancaster, PA will be held March 14 – 17, 2012, at the Lancaster County Convention Center, in downtown Lancaster. Quilters from around the world will be flocking to Lancaster County Amish country to enjoy high quality quilts and to meet other quilters. Enjoy four days of viewing hundreds of quilts that will be exhibited, taking in lectures and quilting workshops, seeing the latest in quilting supplies and being able to shop at the merchant mall, plus attending quilting events. And it all happens in the heart of Amish country.

One of the events that will be happening is a Quilter’s Welcome Party that is being hosted by the Authentic Bed and Breakfast Association on Thursday evening, March 15^th from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Quilt and Textile Museum in downtown Lancaster just about a block from the Convention center. Be sure to stop by and register for the door prizes.

Fabric is available in several shops in the area and often at very reasonable prices. Many of the larger local quilt shops will also be open later in the evenings, some till 10:00 pm. Great Meals at Shady Maple

Many people who visit Lancaster County are very familiar with Shady Maple. It is often a mandatory stop on an itinerary. What is not to like - the largest smorgasbord in the area with two hundred feet of authentic Pennsylvania Dutch cooking. Your can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. Lunch and dinner include an elaborate salad/soup bar, eight breads, eight meats, fourteen vegetables, ten cold desserts, three hot desserts, eight pies, six cakes and a sundae bar.

Some visitors may be familiar with only the smorgasbord, but there are many other areas to eat on the property. In the same building, on the ground floor by the 40,000 square foot gift shop is the Dutchette. There you can get a platter with three sides, sandwiches, salad/potato/taco bar or ice cream. This may be an option for a smaller meal when you are not ready to handle the immensity of the smorgasbord.

Next, outside of the farm market, is the Maple Leaf Café. Here you can enjoy a soup/salad bar, chinese buffet, or you can go through a cafeteria style setup to enjoy sandwiches or dinners including a variety of side dishes. There are booths as well as tables to enjoy your meal. This is an excellent stop before or after shopping in the farm market.

Even more casual and laid back is the snack shack which features hot dogs, soft pretzels and ice cream as well as a weekly special which could be steak sandwiches, meatball hoagies, fish sandwiches, or a chicken dinner. This is a great option when you are really in a hurry. There are tables set up in the farm market lobby where you can sit down to enjoy your quick bite

Last, but not least, is the catering. They will cater your party, wedding reception, reunion, or business meeting at their location or yours and you can treat your guests to that wonderful cooking you have enjoyed. The meals can be plated or served as a small, private buffet.

Did you know that we have a world class antique car museum next door to Lancaster County? It is the Antique Automobile Club of America(AACA) Museum in Hershey, PA. They have feature displays that are for varying interests. We are all interested in saving energy but that interest goes back many years and the upcoming display will show us all that there is nothing new. March 2- May 27 the display will be “Alternative Energy Vehicles”, how timely is that? Now if the ladies really don’t want to do this drop them off at the outlets, just 1 mile down the road. Everyone is happy and you can all enjoy lunch or dinner at Chocolate Avenue café or Hershey Pantry both are on Route 422 in Hershey.

Another Lancaster County holiday tradition is delicious Date Pudding. After a nice evening out at the theatre treat yourself to this tasty dessert!

DATE PUDDING

Syrup:

· 1 cup brown sugar

· 1 cup water

· 1 tablespoon butter

Batter:

· ½ cup brown sugar

· ½ cup milk

· 1 cup flour

· 1 cup chopped dates

· ½ cup chopped walnuts

· 2 teaspoon baking powder

· ¼ teaspoon salt

To make syrup:

· Combine 1 cup brown sugar and water; cook together for 3 minutes.

· Remove from heat and add butter.

To make batter:

· Sift sugar, flour, baking powder and salt together.

· Add milk and stir until smooth.

· Fold in chopped dates and walnuts, blending well into mixture.

-Pour syrup into a greased 9”x9” baking dish.

-Drop mounds of batter on top of hot syrup.

-Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.

-Serve cold, plain or with Cool Whip.

A BIG Thank-you

This past Veterans’ Day, many of your Authentic Bed and Breakfast innkeepers in Lancaster County, PA were privileged to participate in a nation-wide program sponsored by our trade association, PAII (Professional Association of Innkeepers International). The program, entitled “B and B’s for Vets”, began in 2009 in West Virginia when a local innkeeper was looking for some way to give back to her local veterans. In 2011, PAII took over the administration of the program. Hundreds of B and B’s in the US and Canada opened their doors and offered Veterans a free night’s stay. You can see other specials offered by PAII at the Better Way to Stay website.

With almost half of the Authentic B and B’s participating, approximately 70 rooms were offered for free at a value of almost $8,000. All branches of the service were represented. There were active military, retired veterans, old, young and in-between. There were service members home on leave from Afghanistan or Iraq and even some who had been in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII. Ages ranged from early twenties to folks in their eighties.

In addition to a free night, your Authentic B and B Innkeepers, working with their Passport Partners and others in the Lancaster community, compiled a complete program of offers for the Vets. These offers included meals, entertainment, shopping and Amish attractions. For example, Veterans were treated to a free show at the American Music Theatre and a free meal at Good N’ Plenty, and a free Segway tour at Red Rose Segway Tours.

The Veterans were very appreciative of the program. Many made arrangements to stay an extra night so as not to miss out on the many opportunities available to them. Several Vets have already made plans to return in 2012. As an added bonus, for most of the Vets and their spouses, this was their first time to experience a bed and breakfast.

Indeed, your Authentic B and B Innkeepers were very honored to be able to say ‘thank you’ in this very unique way.

Automobiles in Lancaster County, PA

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles abound in Lancaster County Pennsylvania! Okay, well not really many airplanes, but there are definitely plenty of train and automobile museums. Whether you’re planning a family weekend at the Strasburg Railroad, or a spur of the moment trip with your “hunny” at the Antique Auto Museum, you’ll discover rich history and educational fun. Obviously you can visit museums at any time, but I recommend a trip on the weekend of November 18-20 because there are many events to enjoy.

The Strasburg Railroad is hosting their “Day Out With Thomas”. This event gives children the opportunity to take a train ride by Thomas the Tank Engine. In addition there will be stories, videos, pump car rides and more. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is right next door and has trains on display, as well as an outdoor rail yard with a turn table.

The Antique Auto Museum at Hershey features automobiles from the past 80 years. You can view the largest collection of buses and even see a car that Betty White used to drive! The AACA Museum is hosting their Autos and Ales event on Friday night November 18. In addition to microbrews and vintage cars, there will be cooking demonstrations, live music, and raffles.

Start planning your trip today, because the weekend will be here before you realize it! And if you’re not sure where to stay, try any one of the Authentic Bed and Breakfast. They are close to both Strasburg and Hershey, not to mention the luxurious accommodations and savory breakfasts!

Twelve Shops of Christmas in Lancaster County Tour

When to visit a Bed and Breakfast in Lancaster County

Is there a good time to take a day or two off the harried everyday life we lead to enjoy the quiet and restful life afforded by a small business owner? The answer is a resounding yes.

Monday: Who likes this day? It takes hours before you realize you’re at work and then it’s time for lunch… if you took this day off, your day would start with a yummy breakfast, plans for a leisure day and hours of enjoying the many activities and sights of Lancaster County.

Tuesday: Just getting started day. Finally you’re able to sort out the things you forgot to do Monday… if you were off this day, food, fun and a feeling of fulfillment will travel with you as you wander around the Lancaster County.

Wednesday: What am I to do now? Always the Boss comes up with the most unusual request that needs to be done while you’re in the middle of your work… if you took this day off, you’d be smiling, relaxing and maybe enjoying some of the best homemade ice cream that Lancaster County produces.

200 years in the Amish Countryside

Autumn in Amish Country! On a recent evening, I took a walk around sunset and was amazed for the millionth time at what a truly unique and beautiful area we live in! Our Amish and Mennonite neighbors were cutting down the corn that canvases the landscape and the sound of machinery whirling in the fields lasted long after sunset. A host of fun autumn activities have arrived and continue throughout the upcoming months including fall festivals, PA Renaissance fair, Apple festivals and the like.

A few days ago, our 200 year old farmstead was visited by some unique visitors - the ancestors of the original owner and builder of our home, Jacob Metlzer. He emigrated here mid 1700s and built what is the first stage of our grey limestone farmhouse. The Metlzer clan is planning an event celebrating the family name in the near future and I feel blessed to be a part of it. Our family is also direct descendants to this man - our 4 year old son, Kiefer is the 9th generation to live within the walls of our home from the unbroken family bloodline! If the walls could talk!

Before there was an America, US Dollars or a Revolutionary War there was what is now the Hertzog Homestead Bed and Breakfast! What a unique and cherished history we have and one that we love to share with guests from around the world! And autumn in Amish country is truly the cherry on top of that proverbial warm and fragrant apple pie!

Lancaster County Fall Festivals and Farm Fairs

Fall is upon us and with it comes cooler temperatures, harvest, apple cider, pumpkins, corn mazes, mums, and fun filled festivals and local farm fairs.

Tailgating is not just for sports stadiums. Check out the Tailgate Festival at Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse, Pa, Sept 16-17, 2011. There you will find sports themed scarecrows and cooking demonstrations. Ever try pumpkin bowling? Face painting for young and old and a parade on Saturday at noon. And lots of delicious food at the Eagles and Steelers Tailgate tents!

How about a Whoopie Pie Festival! On Sept 17, 2011 get yourself to the Hershey Farm Restaurant & Inn in Strasburg, Pa for everything whoopie pie; races, whoopie pie launching, whoopie pie eating contest, whoopie pie checkers and many more fun, delicious happenings.

Long's Park Art and Craft Festival

It is art and craft show time of year in Lancaster County, PA! One of the top 10 fine art and craft show in the country takes place over Labor Day weekend at Long's Park. 200 of the finest Artists and Craftspeople will be showcased. It is quite a feat to be selected to participate in this show as there are over 1000 applications sent in each year from all over America, Canada and beyond.

While at the show you can enjoy live music, fine cuisine, wine and craft beer, free children's activities and an art gallery raffle. At the show gate, tickets are $10 for a one day pass, or $12 for a multi-day pass. Children 12 and under are free. Advance tickets are available on line at the Event website at the discounted rate of $8 for a one day pass and $10 for a multi-day pass. You will probably need several days to take in all the vast array of artisans and craftspeople. The event is held rain or shine so make your plans now to attend this spectacular show!

Lancaster After Dark

The quaint shops and many of the museums in Amish country usually close their doors around 5:00. However, there is still so much to do during the evening hours in Lancaster County.

We just spent a wonderful evening playing miniature golf at Village Greens in Strasburg. They are open until 9:30 during the week and 10:00 on weekends during the summer. Their two beautiful golf courses are set on a hillside winding through lush gardens. We finished the evening with ice cream from the Strasburg Creamery just down the street from the golf course. The Creamery is open until 10 pm.

Or for those who enjoy some haunting tales, there are Ghost Tours beginning at 8:00. These candlelight tours begin in either downtown Lancaster or Strasburg.

Maybe you would enjoy the local music scene. There are many venues around Lancaster featuring DJ's, local artists, open mike night and even comedians. Be sure to pick up a copy of The Fly Magazine while you are in town to check out the current entertainment calendar.

And for stage and screen, we also offer numerous live theater productions and movie theaters including our new IMAX Theater.

So, although the serenity of Lancaster County is a great escape from the big cities, be aware that there is still plenty to do when the sun goes down!

Lemon Blueberry Swirl Cake

1 pkg. White Cake Mix
3/4 cup water
3 Egg whites
2 Tbsp. oil
1 pkg. (3oz.) Jell-O Lemon Flavor Gelatin, divided
1 cup blueberries
1 pkg. (8oz.) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
Whole egg
3 Tbsp. water

HEAT oven to 350 BEAT cake mix, 3/4 cup water, egg whites and oil in large bowl with mixer
until well blended. Add 1/4 cup dry gelatin mix beat on low speed 1 min. Stir in berries; set aside. Beat cream cheese and whole egg in small bowl with mixer until well blended.

POUR half the cake batter into greased 12-cup fluted tube pan or 10-inch tube pan; cover with layers of cream cheese mixture and remaining cake batter.

BAKE 45 to 50 min. or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean.
Cool cake in pan 10 min. Loosen cake from side of pan with knife. Invert cake onto wire rack; gently remove pan. Cool cake completely.
PLACE cake on plate. Microwave 3 Tbsp. water in microwaveable measuring cup on HIGH 30 sec. Add to remaining dry gelatin mix; stir until dissolved is . Brush over cake until mixture is absorbed.

Make your plans now to see some of the exciting events available in Lancaster County.

Dance is the focus of the new show at the American Music Theater. “Dance Explosion!” runs July 29 through October 8. We went opening night and the show is high energy and covers all genres of dance. The 42nd St. tap dance and the Jitter Bug numbers were great. The “Alice in Danceland” skit was very entertaining to watch. There is singing in the show and lots of music from the band. AMT is an Authentic Bed and Breakfast Association Passport partner, so ask your innkeeper about a discount coupon before you buy tickets.

August 9 through October 29 join the Rainbow Dinner Theater for “John Loves Mary”. It is always a good laugh at the Rainbow Dinner Theater. They are another Authentic Bed and Breakfast Association Passport partner.

If you love Irving Berlin’s music then check out “I Love A Piano” at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater. This show runs August 25 – October. It will be hard not to sing along with “God Bless America” and swing and sway to “Puttin’ on the Ritz”. I can’t wait to see this show. Another Authentic Passport partner.

Another musical and fun night is coming to the Fulton Theater September 7 through September 25 for “The All Night Strut!”. We can’t wait for opening night for this toe tapping show featuring songs "Ain't Misbehavin," "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing" and "Lullaby of Broadway." It will be hard to sit still through this show for sure.

For all of you Beverly Lewis fans, get ready to come to Lancaster, PA. From September 14 through December 2 a new musical “The Confession” will be performed on the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant Stage. The musical is based on Beverly Lewis’ trilogy: “The Shunning”, “The Confession” and “The Reckoning”. It is currently running in Indiana and the cast from that show will be traveling here for the Lancaster performances.

So you aren’t into theater. A new event this year is 2nd Sunday Flavor Fair at Building Character in downtown Lancaster. There are local food vendors and live music plus the handcrafted creations of 30 local artisans at Building Character. This is an exciting outdoor happening. If you miss the Aug 14th event maybe you can catch the Sept 11th or Oct. 9th events.

COVERED BRIDGES OF LANCASTER COUNTY

Lancaster County, PA is famous for its many historic covered bridges. These bridges are architectural treasures spanning rivers and streams throughout a remarkably scenic county. Over the years, several covered bridges have been destroyed or replaced, leaving a total of 25 in existance.

Located on Hunsecker Road, about 6 miles northeast of downtown Lancaster, you will find the Hunsecker’s Mill Covered Bridge which crosses the Conestoga River. This bridge was destroyed by flooding from Hurricane Agnes in 1972 but was rebuilt the following year. The bridge is 180 feet long, making it the longest single span covered bridge in Lancaster County.

Covered bridges were built of wood and covered with a roof to help preserve the structure. Known as “kissing bridges”, they reflect on a part of history when life was simpler and horse drawn carriages ruled the roads. Taking a ride through Lancaster County to see the bridges could be described as a journey to “stop and smell the roses”.

In his book “Bridges of Lancaster County” Bruce M. Waters shares a wealth of information on each individual bridge, listing both its location and specific history. The book can be purchased at most of the B&B’s listed with the Authentic Bed & Breakfast Association.
