This Wednesday at 9:00! The Carousel Lounge! Please come out! The last time we almost had a brawl and the bands got kicked out. I didn't blog about it because I was mortified. However those in attendance were certainly entertained. The fabulous Eric Hisaw band with Chrissy Flatt were well behaved and gave a great performance.

The Carousel Lounge is a setup bar meaning they sell beer and mixers for your own booze. The place is very interesting, old and dingy with a crazy circus theme. It would be an awesome place to shoot a zombie film! So zombies are welcome but brawlers, please stay home. The lineup is not complete yet, but rest assured you will have blast! First up will be Phoenix Jackson. See you at the Carousel!

Well it's a good thing I didn't invest money to be miserable at a muddy Austin City Limits Festival. Instead, I hosted the Austin City Outer Limits festival. Complete with zombies. My first foray into filmmaking. What a blast! I've pieced together some raw footage and also a rough take on the music video portion. The finished product will be submitted to the Dismember the Alamo Film Festival. Thanks to music groups Soulution and Dandelion Wino, and friends old and new who participated.

The theme of the film: Austin Live Music: Love it or zombies will eat your brain. Check it out!

Lucinda Williams got married!

For months and months we've been hearing about this album, originally to be titled "Tarantula" and produced independently, now named "Lovely Creatures" on the Kirtland Records label. I'm really glad the name was changed because whenever I would Google "Tarantula" I would always get the SONG that he already did instead of information about the album. And yes I still call them albums, because that is what they are regardless of whether they are produced on CD or vinyl.

Bob will be doing an in-store performance at Waterloo Records tomorrow at 5 PM.

Fantastic Fest and Austin School of Film fundraiser

First of all, it's coming up on Fantastic Fast time in Austin, September 24 - October 1. Fantastic Fest is "the largest genre film festival in the U.S., specializing in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and just plain fantastic movies from all around the world." Most of the films are shown at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar. So I'll let you in on a little secret. As much as I love Austin music, and love to blog about and promote it, I'm hatching a plot to go into filmmaking. I already have a script written in my head. It has to do with body part sales and corporate greed. It will be completely fictional, with any resemblance of a person or event to one in reality, completely coincidental. I don't want to get sued by a former employer of mine.

I don't have a badge to this festival because I can't afford it right now. Maybe next year my film will be premiering at the festival. This year, I'll be attending two related events. The first, this Wednesday September 23, will be a fundraising party for Austin School of Film at Maggie Mae's on 6th Street, during which it is specifically advertised that I may get the chance to rub elbows with Hollywood bigwigs. The party will celebrate the premier of Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever. There will be live music, so be looking for photographs of the event on my Examiner.com site!

The second big thing I will be doing is attending the premier of Zombieland on Friday September 25 at the Paramount. Stars Woodie Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone, plus director Ruben Fleischer, will be there live in person!

I'll be dreaming of Hollywood this week...

Bob Schneider a no-show for Grooveline Horns

Grooveline Horns had been advertising an "aftershow" to be held at Antone's on September 15 after the Jason Mraz concert held at the Frank Erwin Center. I found out that very day, thanks to my Facebook friend and keyboardist Stefano Intelisano, that Jason Mraz himself was definitely going to be making a guest appearance. I was especially excited about the possibility of seeing Bob Schneider, Jason's friend and songwriting partner, AND frontman for the Scabs for whom Grooveline Horns USED to play before Jason Miraz stole them for his tour, joining the show. In fact from my vantage point at the front of the stage I was able to read the set list (which I confiscated at the end of the show) and see that Bob was slated to do "Pay At The Pump". But guess what? Bob never showed up! I asked the bartender what he knew, and all he could say was that yes, they were expecting him, but no one knew why he didn't show.

UPDATE: When Bob did his in-store performance at Waterlook records for his new CD release, I told him he was missed. He responded that he intended to go, but he "got tired" and that he's getting old. Then he blamed it on his 4-year-old son. Yes, he is a single father, which will make any man tired, even the seemingly tireless Bobby himself.

Despite that small disappointment, the show itself was great. Jason Mraz, Bushwalla, local rapper Zeale and many others who I did not know rapped, played, and danced. At one point, while Jason was reaching his hands out to the audience, I reached out and touched his hand, and he wiggled his fingers at me. When he crouched down right in front of my daughter, she reached out and rubbed his shoulders! He and Bushwalla both enjoyed jumping into the crowd. And at one point, Jason came out and started taking pictures of the audience! I tell you I don't know where they all got the energy to do this show, after having already played that night!

Beastie Boys Announces Cancellations

Musicians into Conscious Transformation

I’m looking for fellow musicians that have done the work to be “at choice” in their lives and not controlled by theirs subconscious behaviors. Some of the work I have done is most of the Global Relationship Courses and The Curriculum for Living by Landmark Education.

If you are a consciously awake musician of any genre and you want to collaborate then please reply.
I mainly play guitar but I have a nice recording setup and live gear too. Also some cool video abilities.

I would like to create music that supports our consciousness. If you don't know what I'm talking about and are interested in really living your life instead it being lived by your subconscious then reply as well.

The response stating that there is no honest Texas blues in Austin is just the sort of thing that gives this community a bad name. First of all the writer obviously has no knowledge of anything least of all blues. Almost everything in blues, and most popular music for that matter, is derived from somebody somewhere. It's part of the form. Both Albert Collins and Albert King would have acknowledged influences (or rip offs if you must) from others, though perhaps never publicly, and Stevie Ray did so often with both pride and humility.

There are still a few Texas bluesmen about in Austin, not nearly enough I'll grant you, that I could recommend to the poster (poser) but I suspect he wouldn't recognize what he was hearing.

And as far as honest blues, I was in Antone's the other night and off to one side sat James Cotton and Pinetop Perkins digging Derek O'Brian and the rest of Antone's House Band. That sight gave me hope that the heart of Austin is still alive and beating four to the bar in a killer shuffle.

That's right!!....a Jonus Brothers tribute band! EXCEPT......we'll sound 1,000 times (X) BETTER!! Because each member of THIS band will be a real musician that has been at it forever, unlike the original little snot-nose, three year's experience, wet-behind-the-ears, multi-millionaire little boys still on allowance as Dad and Mom cash in. No one under 45 will be in this band. We are going to ROCK their songs Austin-style!!

NOBODY, by the way, will be playing "Mom" and "Dad", so dont worry, we will actually be paid. Good....got THAT outta the way.

Dude, You are absolutely right! Desperation for a venue on short notice clouded my posting judgement. The listing has been changed.

Musicians/bands who can draw a paying crowd to venue should get paid. Always.

This is the way some venues out there get started with NOT wanting to pay bands. The dillemma is that these NON-PROFESSIONAL BEHAVING (DRINKING BOOZE ON THE JOB) BANDS BRING THEIR BOOZE DRINKING CRONIES....AND THE CASH REGISTER RINGS.....THE CLUB ENJOYS 100% PROFIT, NO OVERHEAD........get it?

Whoever you are, Garage band.....you are shooting yourselves in the foot.....and also the "foot of the Austin music scene". SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!

Film vs. Music: Can't they co-exist?

Some film folks are hoppin' mad that, if a deal with the Austin Film Society (AFS) goes through, Soundcheck Austin (an offshoot of Soundcheck Nashville) will be opening a new full-production music rehearsal facility in 28,000 square feet known as Stage 4 at Austin Studios, which was originally built for the purpose of film production.

The property is owned by the city and leased to AFS, which sub-lets space to film projects and to long-term tenants. Due to a slowdown in film project leasing, AFS is seeking a more steady revenue stream. However there are those in the film industry who are concerned that this move will limit potential future film projects, which maybe sparked by new incentives from the State. However AFS says there has not been an increase in inquiries since the incentives were passed into law. Also, in 2012 the studios will be expanding into the neighboring National Guard Armory. HERE AFS explains the deal.

In order to clear the air, AFS held an open forum at Austin Studios on June 25. Tempers flared, with one person describing AFS as "like the Vatican, where you make up your own rules."

The deal, if finalized, will need to be approved by the City.

What Would Austinella Do for July 4?

Sure, you can go down to Auditorium Shores and hear the Austin Symphony with your fireworks on July 4. That's just not what Austinella would do to celebrate the 4th of July in Austin, Texas. Basically it narrows down to 2 choices for her:

Nutty Brown Cafe's 4th of July Festival: Jamey Johnson, Bob Schneider, "many more" guests, and a "monumental" fireworks show. Doors at 4:00, music at 5:00, "show" (I'm guessing the fireworks show) at 9:30.

July 4 Freedom Fest at the Dell Diamond: At 6:00 pm "Emerging Artists" Ariel Abshire, Stacy Barnhill, Uncle Lucius, Paula Nelson Band. At 8:00 Kellie Pickler, 9:15 fireworks, then headliner Jerry Jeff Walker.

Oh, decisions, decisions!

Update: HERE is another idea that Austinella recommends if you want to see fireworks over Lake Travis in Lago Vista, out in Hill Country, with Van Wilks headlining the music.

Villa’s Music Garden: New Music Venue in Austin

Take an acre of land on South Congress, a taco shack, and a musician looking for a place to hold a CD release party, and what do you get? A new outdoor multicultural music venue for Austin! Villa's Music Garden is Grammy-award winning musician/producer Joel Guzman's new venture along with Tony Villafranca, who opened Villa's Taco Shack on the location at 4406 S. Congress Ave. in January. Other partners are music artist manager Ken Kushnick, Leonard Davila of the Austin Tejano Music Coalition, and Gavin Lance Garcia, publisher of Todo Austin.

The venue kicks off this Saturday June 27, with Joel Guzman and wife Sarah Fox, Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones, Los Texas Wranglers, and Shawn Nelson and the Ramblers. Joel and Sarah will be celebrating the release of their new CD "Conjuntazzo". You can get tickets to the event through Front Gate Tickets.

APD vs. Music: More To The Story!

Part of the agenda on last Thursday's Austin City Council meeting was to establish the long-awaited Music Department that was recommended by the recent Live Music Task Force. It was suddenly decided to delay that decision, based on the request of Council Member Sheryl Cole. According to Ms. Cole, "We're closing pools, changing library hours and are even in the midst of budget negotiations with our public safety employees, so I think all that needs to be considered before we make a decision to create an additional department." Council Member Mike Martinez asserted that the department could be budget neutral by using already existing staff of the Austin Convention Center.

Turns out, according to this article in the Austin American-Statesman, "Austin police union officials warned city leaders in rushed meetings last week that a City Council decision to create a music department could jeopardize their offer to possibly forfeit or defer their 2010 pay raises, a potential $5 million savings to the city."

So not only are police officers arbitrarily enforcing laws that are not designed to protect people or property (while NOT enforcing laws that ARE - I have a whole story to tell about THAT); they are also throwing their weight around to try and prevent the creation of a department that, in theory, will help give those who speak on behalf of the Austin music industry some influence in governmental actions.

What is the hidden agenda here?

KGSR DJ Andy Langer tweeted it . So it must be true. There IS a month of Tuesdays on the Continental Club schedule beginning next Tuesday June 23 (although Andy said 6/22 which is Monday).

UPDATE: This is verified by Dianne's Dish straight from the Continental Club...

I must say (maybe I've said it before but I'll say it again) that Toni Price is one of the reasons I moved to Austin. I was a fan before I even saw her at Shady Grove 3 years ago. And when I experienced her and Shady Grove I was so in love with this town I never looked back. Not long after we moved here, I was very distraught to learn that she was moving to California! Hopefully we'll be saying "Welcome back, Toni!"

Unplugged at the Grove: 911 Caller Exposed!

The 911 caller who accomplished his mission of closing down the music at Shady Grove last Thursday 6/11 has been EXPOSED! He is none other than John Scott Trainer, "Neighborhood Representative" on Austin's recent Live Music Task Force. He lives in a $650,000 house up on the hill across the street from Shady Grove, 1612 Meghan Lane. This guy will not let up until he silences the music for GOOD! I say he needs to be run out of town.

Lou Ann Barton @ Antone's

Lou Ann Barton and Derek O'Brien perform "Scratch My Back", my favorite LAB song, at Antone's this past Saturday night. Lou Ann seems a lot happier now than another recent time I saw her perform, when she appeared downright Bitchy! As always, she carried her purse onto the stage. If you are on Facebook, you too can become a friend of Lou Ann Barton's Purse!

Derek has backed Lou Ann for many years. Check out THIS video from 1986! Word is she was rather inebriated during this performance. Can you tell? Thank goodness she is sober now!
