As a franchisee, Paul Foster has discovered the advantage of an Auditel franchise is found in the collaborative nature of the network.

Prior to joining Auditel in 2011, Paul Foster was a business development director, offering printing and marketing services to banks and retailers. “I reached a point, when a change in senior management led me to realise I’d had enough of corporate politics!” he admits. “It was when I was introduced to Auditel I realised I could take control of my future. In spite of not having all the relevant experience, I knew I could apply my existing skills and insight to build a successful business.”

We enabled them to continue trading through negotiating existing contracts and the CEO set-up two local restaurants both of which are still trading. 3. Finding answers in others’ expert knowledge

As Paul recalls, “One of my early clients, global charity World Vision, needed help with their UK contact centre. When I spoke with the manager, I realised there was more I could offer, once we had resolved the issue she presented me with. My problem was though, I knew nothing about contact centres. Fortunately, within the network was a franchisee who used to work for the actual contact centre World Vision used. I spoke to him about the problem, admitting I couldn’t offer a solution. He offered both a solution and how to action it.”

Ryan Harris spent 25 years of his career working in the construction industry. He rose from training as an electrician, to overseeing a number of construction businesses, “I was head-hunted to work for a business which at the time turned over around £2 million,” he says. “By the time I left, we had established a number of limited companies focused on different aspects of construction: plumbing, electrical engineering, facilities management etc., and had built it up to a £25m turnover business.”

No stranger to success, Ryan was impressed by Auditel. He contacted one of their local franchisees, Dean Cooper, to help with the cost management challenges one of his businesses was encountering, “Dean was excellent in how he worked with me,” Ryan says. “He is still on a retainer for the company, even though I have walked away! I was impressed by how he worked, and thought I wanted to do the same thing, so I looked into what Auditel offer. When I realised it was something I could do, I dived in head-first.”

Taking the leap from managing other people’s businesses to running your own company can be a challenge. So based on his experience as a new Auditel start-up, Ryan offers these tips for hitting the ground running.

Use what you know

Having been involved in construction for so long, it was a good industry to gain a wealth of experience, “There is none more ruthless, none more aggressive than the construction industry.” Ryan laughs. “I reached a point where I had enough of the industry. But as a construction industry specialist, I target new business within the industry, because they’re what I know. Using the very best systems, processes and support structures Auditel has established over the last two and a half decades, I am able to help my clients become more streamlined, and more efficient as a business.”

Sourcing your client base

Engaging with businesses you have already worked with, especially if you have a positive working relationship with them, can be a good starting point for sourcing your client-base, alongside all the other routes to market. “I knew the types of businesses I could support, and how.” Ryan says. “I told a few of my previous customers what I was planning to move into, priming them with the crucial question: ‘When I am ready, are you happy for me to give you a call?’

Don’t be shy about your skills

Combining the strength of Auditel’s business model with the expertise and experience you have already gained, brings a confidence in speaking to potential clients about what you offer. “I am passionate about what I do. I’ve been able to use my experiences, both in the construction industry, and in business management, and make it work for my Auditel business.” says Ryan.

“Prior to this, I hated sales! I would get agitated if I had to do anything remotely related to sales. But it has panned out, with the training and support offered by Auditel, I am actually pretty good at sales! The key is knowing what you are offering and demonstrating the confidence in your services, to ensure a client will see a return on their investment.”

Working in a city office certainly adds kudos for many office workers, but sometimes the commute can feel longer than the day in the office! Is it really worth it?

Stephen Sowerby was in his twenties when he decided to take control of his career, particularly when it came to reducing the daily commute. “I wanted to be self-employed. It was my dream goal.” he says. “I don’t know how people do a big commute for so long!”

Tallying up the number of hours spent travelling, and laying it out in a spreadsheet is a sure-fire way to determine whether the balance is worth the effort. For Stephen, he knew it was time to take control over his career, and devote more time to his personal life.

Bringing past experience into a future plan

Stephen, a qualified chartered account, had always been adept at managing his own workload and clients. When he was ready to take the step into self-employment he says he knew it wouldn’t be too much of a challenge for him. “It wasn’t difficult to make the move. In fact, the transition was relatively easy, especially with the help of Auditel.”

Franchisees from Aberdeen to Cornwall attended, being warmly welcomed by Fiona Steels, Auditel’s Head of Support and Recruitment. Chris Allison, Managing Director and Founder, then spoke about innovations within the business model that had taken place during 2017, supporting future growth by helping the network win more business in a wider range of markets. The Business Cost Area Leaders then shared their thoughts on ongoing opportunities within their respective marketplaces.

Throughout the day, franchisees attended workshops from colleagues, partners and suppliers, covering a range of topics from cyber attacks to tips on closing sales. There was also a lighter session with motivational speaker John Hotowka, who used magic for a fresh perspective on Auditel’s business model.

 
The evening’s events were compered by professional after dinner speaker Barry Williams. Franchisees and the Head Office team were joined by nearly 50 Gold and Platinum sponsors of Auditel’s Supplier Exhibition for a black tie gala dinner, and a raffle in aid of this year’s nominated charity, the Wooden Spoon. There was also an awards ceremony, recognising the achievements of individual franchisees:
