artist, her fears, the power of the viewer, and the commerce which
supports her, but also causes artistic conflict. Show Pony is a
multilayered one-night art exhibit and performance/conceptual event that
references the great 60’s Art Happenings, a singular event that one
needed to be present to expe...rience.
The Early Fluxus in New York was a great example of the blending of
different artistic media and disciplines to create unique art
experiences.

The complete details of Jaclyn Schanes’ one-night
art piece must be kept unknown until the event to ensure the integrity
of the concept. The artist has constructed a scenario which utilizes
paintings, self-recorded audio, and the participation of viewers to
create a unique experience.

At the center of the exhibit are
approximately 35 small to medium watercolor self-portraits, which will
be uniquely mounted and displayed in a strategic way as to facilitate
performance by including the attendees into the experience. Schanes has
recently embraced the often forgotten medium of watercolor, bringing
both beauty and brutal directedness to her Neo-Expressionism influenced
portraits, which will provide one layer of meaning in this two-hour art
event.

Irritable as all hell, any sentence/word can send me roaring these days. Odd circumstances led me to my current latitude and longitude. I feel like I am the rosacea patch on someones face. Swollen and awkward and flaming. The only escape I have is to paint my way out of this mess. Or patch the face with paint to cover up the red. With hope, the art will send me beaming into the future.
Re:Writer: What or who are you biggest influences?

JS: A lot to me is fleeting, yes, but there are images, sounds, people, that the tentacles of my heart suction onto. Little do they know they are deep in my insides growing bacteria. First and foremost, there is Hope Kroll. On the family tree she is located above and to the left of my mother, my aunt. History has lead our family through a tumultuous tunnel that is very prominent in our minds. Since a young girl, Hope has had the ability to express herself though all different forms of art. I consider Hopes' work morbid with a twist on delicate beauty. I've been subconsciously exposed to her art since a babe. How could it not affect me? I feel I too have that grim expression, though maybe mine is a little more sugarcoated but comes from the same place, same blood, same history. Beyond art influence, there is sound. What I produce usually is viable to have come from the music I am listening to. Specific sounds, specific bands have resonated in my head. The Pixies, Hum, Jawbreaker- to Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, and the one song my father wrote on piano, spin and undulate around my mind until they mix and bake my next goods. Sounds stir up a batchful of emotions in me. Sounds irritate me to no extent too. Sounds offer me the kind, happy release as well. There isn't another form of expression that irks/excites me more...

Celebrating an unexpected (personal) expressionistic tradition with the anti-expressionist medium. Watercolor is soft, wet and seductive. My goal is to toss and turn the brush with BRUTAL strokes. Beat the paint till it can't sleep at night. Although it's not my fault when the water goes awry and decides for itself where to live forever. Blame it on the f***ing water...
Re:Writer:
Is Fear a component of your work?
JS: I hear life experience is a very important key to driving a persons art. I also hear that my traumas lie blatantly on my face. Constantly having to explain the scar on my chest-which is from when I was shot in the Nam. No, really...(in my past life). Anyway, a masochistic obsession with dancing with the inner devil does help fuel my art.

Ex-boyfriends love to tell me I am a victim of Ennui. So in lieu of the comments, I have thrust into my brain to stay in the most disturbed pocket. Maybe, it's uncontrollable, maybe not. But to answer the question finally, Yes, I work best when indulging in my fears. Fears of social endeavors, fears of the past, the future...the apocalypse. The fear of saying I am afraid of falling, and for saying such, causing the fateful storm to bring the former to life-or to take my life. Fear is not the only emotion I evoke from inside while conceptualizing. I try to make it a point to snuggle and wrestle with each feeling. Gershwin's masterpiece "Rhapsody in Blue" is a melting pot of every conceivable mental state. I envy that ability and want to provoke all sorts of opinions.

of the portraiture of birds in surreal graphical landscapes. Inspired by the
works of James John Audubon, and using almost solely salvaged wood and paint as
his work materials, Hayes offers a modern interpretation of classic nature
portraiture to set an aesthetic tone and present the beauty of nature, while
also commenting on the discord in nature caused by humans and the issues that
afflict our contemporary society.

Employing the visual vocabulary of geometry and science, Hayes praises the work of scientists while also prompting a
consideration of the irony of science as a quest for the understanding of
nature in which nature itself is adversely affected. The works in Square Blue Residue showcase a
visual reflection on the deep harm to mother nature caused by our societal
compulsion to utilize science and technology to support our dependence on and
enjoyment of modern human conveniences, while inviting us to consider how we
may live a more harmonious life with our surroundings.
