Quite often when I do personal work, the final image ends up being quite different from the initial intent. So I ‘m going to try doing process journals for some of the stuff I do, it might evolve into something interesting.

To start things off, I’m going to post up the process for Flautist Woods image I did not long ago

The initial image was just a character sketch I did that I wanted to paint up a little. As I thought it was just going to be a small study/practice I didn’t really have anything planned for the background and left it somewhat ambiguous. At this stage I didn’t have much of an intent apart from it being a quick study.

Had to drop the glasses as the environment was worked in and they looked a little out of place, by this point it evolved a bit further than I initially planned and I had to start thinking of how to tie the character together with the environment.

Quite often I arrive at a dead end… The environment I had wasn’t working, so it was time to drop it for something else to see if I could fix it.

As I was still having trouble getting a coherent image, I made the decision to scrap it all and start all over. Being mindful of tying the character better with the environment I did a redesign that would help me to achieve that. I also tried a different style to further mix things up
